Been playing it for six hours non-stop on day 1 release - it plays an ace game of football!

I'm a PS4 owner and would mainly describe PES as my preferred football game, but having recently bought a Switch, I was curious to know whether it could deliver a great football experience and it hasn't disappointed.

I won't go into all the features (as I'm sure most fans of the series are aware of what's in it and what has been left out) - the core thing for me is that there is a career mode, an ultimate team mode, but most importantly it plays and looks great!

    Great game
    Pros:
    Very good moves from players
    Excelent online play no lag
    Decent graphics portable
    All the licenses

    Cons

Don't have online play with friends (don't have send invites to a friend)
Graphics looks middle power, do it better next time

For the first soccer experience in switch the portable game and the licences the game should be 8/10

Ignore the bad reviews. The portability of this game is fantastic and the gameplay is as smooth, if not better (imo) than on the PS4 or XBOX.

If graphics are your concern then I'm sorry, but the rest of the game is top notch.

This morning I download the Switch version and must say it feels great to play and wonder why if feels so much better to play. I ask my son this afternoon to play with the playstation against me and then we played a game with the switch and he likes to play with the switch, maybe it was the controller, but he said it has lesses lag? I wonder why but it seems the split second ball control, the pass, shooting with the fifa playstation version feels for him some kind of lag.

Stil the graphics on the PSN look better, but the switch is nog bad and when you play it's not notable anymore. I still play fifa on the vita ,so maybe I'm easyly happy.

I wanted to give a 8 first because of it graphis , but the better gameplay and comparing the graphics with other games we have on the switch it's a 8,5 and so I decided to give it a 9

    (UPDATED REVIEW)

    Pros

    Graphics/Technical
Handheld mode looks brilliant as it runs at full resolution @ a rock solid 60FPS (replays of course run at 30FPS, but this has always been an artistic choice with sports games, I guess they just stuck with it). The game is very responsive input-wise, a night and day comparison especially against the Switch version of NBA 2K18 that comes with hilarious input lag.

TV mode looks good, but you will notice an odd graphical detail (the models sometimes look as if they have no outline). Strange, but despite this, they look pretty good on my BenQ LED. Just not as vibrant as the Switch screen, obviously. Not a deal breaker of course, but I thought I would point it out. Thankfully, the video is not blurry like with NBA Playgrounds (yuck!).

    Features

Ultimate team - it is here. I have never tried it before, so I don't know how faithful it is to previous UT on the PS4/XBox One. Just google "FIFA 18 Switch missing modes" to see what was affected.

I encourage you to do research as far as available modes and features go, because Nintendo does not give refunds after the first one!!

    Gameplay

I heard of complaints that in FIFA 18 on consoles, defense is terrible because EA wanted to have emphasis on attack and spectacular goals.

I am happy to say that at least in the 10+ games I played so far, both online and offline, this has not been the case on the Nintendo Switch version of the game. The players are weighty, more than the ones on PS Vita, and penetration defense requires building up play cleverly. I have the setting on legendary, and both the CPU and I had a tough time penetrating defense, so in my opinion, that is the way it should be. I haven't played the PS4 version, so I don't know how FIFA fans are feeling on that side.

On the Switch so far, I am liking what I am seeing gameplay wise. I might update the review if crosses turn out to be OP or something along those lines.

    Online Play

A pleasant surprise, at least from day one. I have a barely average internet connection of about 4MB UPLOAD and 4MB DOWNLOAD copper wire, old technology internet, and there was almost no perceivable lag for me. Except for a few stutters, I was able to play 3 matches online to completion with no atrocious lag in sight. Fingers crossed this great online performance stays when the player base for the game grows.

Sound - this is EA, they always bring the heat with their soundtracks. Commentary reminded me of the PS Vita version for some reason, although there are some changes for sure. It's hard to tell for me, since I haven't fired up FIFA in over 3 years. Standard commentary in my opinion, it gets the job done.

    Cons

The Journey mode is missing because the game is not powered by frostbite on Switch. EA confirmed frostbite can run on Switch though, so that is interesting for future FIFA titles and other frostbite games on Switch

Obviously based on the engine that was used on the PS Vita, the big difference being the lighting model and graphics are better. I played that Vita FIFA game for hours, so I am sure about this.

Weird AI bugs that have players stand by like idiots while the opposing team takes the ball. This happens usually in free kicks,

Finicky player switching, which is disabled if the ball is high up sometimes,

Inconsistent power for shots and passes, even with some set on manual,

Can't invite friends, which is stupid,

Sometimes celebrations can't be skipped, even if you are playing offline, which is even more stupid.

Other cons are for whatever it is you like that is missing from this version.

    Conclusion
After the ABSOLUTE MESS that was NBA 2K18, I had sworn never to buy another sports game for any developer day one. However, after some serious consideration and my history with FIFA since the first one on PS Vita, I was willing to give EA a chance for their first game on Nintendo's new console. Boy am I glad I bit the bullet for this game, because this is the best portable FIFA in in the whole damn world right now, and even though EA are well known for some underhanded **** when it comes to their games, I just have to give credit where credit is due. This game is mostly polished, but with weird bugs. However, it is nowhere near as broken as NBA 2K18 for the Switch. Don't get carried away by the review, though! You still owe it to yourself to do the necessary research to know this is what you are looking for. This is a good start. Fingers crossed the next FIFA on Switch will not be a re-skinned version of this game, just like they did with the PS Vita version. Cheers, and LONG LIVE NINTENDO SWITCH

International Superstar Soccer and World Cup 98 on N64. ISS '98 on PS1. The first Pro Evo on PS2. Sensible Soccer on AMIGA. FIFA on Megadrive, Pro Evo on Wii etc. etc. I try to give every footie game a fair go.

FIFA on Megadrive, Pro Evo on Wii etc. etc. I try to give every footie game a fair go.

Fifa 18 on Switch met my expectations and then some. I don't know why EA withheld early review copies; it possibly hurt sales.

Gameplay runs at a stable 60fps and feels responsive. Every touch matters. Players with inferior stats respond worse, visa-versa. It's fun to play and challenging, and its easy to pull off chips, long balls, feigns, skills etc. having a vast array of options when on the ball and off.

There's a lot of Real Madrids and Barcelonas online, but being matched against lesser teams makes for some hearty games. In any case, it plays smoothly and I've had many enjoyable online league matches, with a great variety in the goals scored.

The training mode is useful and has a points leaderboard for every drill, to compete against other Fifa 18 players on your friends list. I already have around 10 people on the list who got the game, and rising.

All in all, this is a good game. It feels polished. It's far superior to the other Switch football title: Super Sidekicks (which has shallow arcade gameplay and is forgettable) and I can play it in my bed. For a portable football game it is amazing. It's a decent crack. The main complaints are coming from spoiled brats who don't recognize a good thing when they see one.

There are the other boons of the FIFA license including authentic team-specific chants, which add to the immersion. Controls can be customized. It has a solid career mode. This to me feels like a console version, with no gimmicks in sight and looks nice and crisp in handheld.

A good effort from EA whose other Nintendo outings left a lot to be desired frankly. One more thing. People who complain about graphics don't understand optimization. It's a tiny system. If it ran PS4 graphics, you'd get 20 minutes battery life. There has to be a trade off. Same reason everything other than gameplay is locked at 30 fps.

Not normally a fan of EA games but this is actually a pretty solid FIFA game. Plays well on the handheld and is without a doubt the best handheld football game ever made. Shame that you can't play a friend on UT but apart from that it's solid. Well worth a look in for all football fans that own a Switch.

The best thing I can say about this version is that it's hard to tell the difference between this and FIFA 17 for PS4. But is freaking mobile. EA has done a tremendous job on this one, it looks "great" (worse then PS4 ofc) but you get to take it with you. If you don't care about the Journey and aren't obsessed about all the modes, this will be a great experience.

The critic reviews for this game have been approached wrongly. Yes you can compare the game to PS4/Xbox to a degree, but I think after a point, you have to realise that this is a different prospect completely. It's FIFA on the go. And it's brilliant. It plays really well and looks great. Easily the best portable football game I've ever had my hands on.

The ai is much improved since 2017 and the flow is so much more balanced. It’s missing the journey, which, to me, doesn’t matter. I play online and local seasons. As a manager. I don’t care about the pro mode but some might.

It’s a very good first outing on the switch and gives me confidence that FIFA for switch is here to stay and will only improve over time. Going from great to amazing. Hopefully ea don’t do what they’ve done for other mobile platforms going forward and just update wardrobe and p,Ayer roster. Hopefully this is the beginning of a real development cycle of FIFA for Nintendo. As such the bar is set pretty high already.

    TL;DR
Excellent first effort. Fluid control, lots to enjoy. Missing the journey which to me doesn’t matter.

Content wise it has more than enough for the money, even though it doesn't have all the modes the console version has.

So: if you own a PS4 or XBone, depending on whether you are more interested in more modes / better graphics or being able to play wherever you want: get one version or the other.

If you only have the Switch or are looking for a great foodball game for on the go: Fifa 18 is close to perfect. The only thing that isn't great is online, as it is crippled (no invite, no voicechat ...) by Nintendo's stupid online policies.

I've been playing it every other day since it came out and the AI alone provides enough of a challenge to last you for many hours as you go through championship divisions. It is different in terms of mechanics to other stand alone console versions (I'm looking at you PS4 and XBone) but its not so different you would have to start again.

I've been playing FIFA since 1994, and its still the same old thing most of us are interested in playing. That is either playing with your own favourite teams/nations, building your own team in FUT, or leading your own player through to them competing in top flight football.

All of those mechanics work and whats more is that they work on a mobile platform that by far and away blows out any other mobile version of FIFA since FIFA14. My only gripe is that so much of the game including FUT itself requires an internet connection. This is problematic when you're really out on the road by yourself or with friends.

The vast majority of magazines and websites who have reviewed this game have looked at it the wrong way. It never was meant to be a direct competitor to the PS4 and XBone versions of FIFA, at least not this time round. We don't know quite yet what to expect for FIFA19.

I’m a bit disappointed after finding out this version is missing not only the Journey, but also some key features in other game modes (weekend leagues, squad battles, online play with friends, enhanced crowds, custom overlays for MLS, release clauses in contracts, some FUT formations not available outside that game mode, just to name a few); nevertheless, I have to admit this game is a bigI’m a bit disappointed after finding out this version is missing not only the Journey, but also some key features in other game modes (weekend leagues, squad battles, online play with friends, enhanced crowds, custom overlays for MLS, release clauses in contracts, some FUT formations not available outside that game mode, just to name a few); nevertheless, I have to admit this game is a big accomplishment. If you don’t try and compare to it’s “bigger” versions, it’s a very good soccer game, with plenty of content and modes to have fun, solo or with friends. Most importantly, you can have fun on the go with your friends and the game is awesome in tabletop and andheld mode too.
I hope they manage to get Frostbite running on Switch for FIFA19, because a FIFA18.5 won’t be enough next year.

Graphics are obviously not as good as PS4, but it's still fun to play! All the modes I play are included so that's great. Fun to pick it up and keep playing on the go. I feel this is like from ignite engine++. It runs very smooth. Overall very much recommended if you play soccer very much like I do.

I hope new EA games can come to the video game (especially: need for speed, dragon age, battlefield and obviously new FIFA games)

FIFA 18 is an excellent port on the Nindendo Switch. The first FIFA that is convenient to play in a portable. After playing for 6 hours (Career mode) FIFA 18 is a good game if you like soccer games and play on the go for some moments. You won't be disappointed.

The gameplay is solid (it doesn't have lag, control has good response), and is kind of similar to the big version with the difference that physics feel different, is a little faster, and sometimes I had the feeling that the control is less sensible and players are less accurate to provide a good pass (Just a few).

For me the cons of the game is that you can not play online with your friends and the career mode is not like the career mode from the big version. I hope that the good sales of this version would change the mind of EA company and make a Frostbite port such as Bethesda with Doom.

Ignore all the people who are so negative about this game. You can't review a game just by saying it's not as good as on a console (duh). For the SWITCH it's great. FIFA on the go for the first time in 4 yrs.

Contando che è portatile EA non avrebbe potuto fare di meglio. Il gameplay è buono, un po' meno la grafica.

This is not a bad game at all. I must say that it is incredibly fun. Plus, the World Cup update makes it even more fun. Highly recommended.

This is FIFA 17 light. With less visual power, reduced modes and less impressive mechanics compared to its name sharing siblings this is a downgrade with a hefty price tag.

The Switch version of FIFA 18 is a better portable experience than you've been able to get on Nintendo consoles up to this point, but it's hampered by Nintendo's insufficient online strategy. Unlike some previous EA Sports titles on Nintendo platforms, FIFA 18 isn't an ill-formed castoff, but it's an uneven performance and not a clear-cut victory.
