I can forgive that, because the gameplay mechanics is something else, different, and great. As you play the game the mechanics evolve with you, changing the way you play previous stages, adding an extra layer to levels you go through again. And the music is something else on its own that can only be described when you experience it. The game does not shy away giving you the real definition of "experimental". Expand

Absolutely amazing game. Got it in an impulse purchase and I just straight up couldn’t put the game down.

Weird, whimsical, funny... This game is certainly one of a kind. The gameplay is entertaining, the music is superb and dialogue is worth your time.
Give this one a chance, you won't regret it.

Everhood has all the elements of being considered one of the Indie RPG greats. An engaging cast of characters, an amazing soundtrack, and gameplay mechanics I hadn’t seen before which made the game feel fresh and fun to play. Some of the online videos/trailers for the game can look a bit daunting but there are multiple difficulty levels if you’re not as on beat with rhythm/dodging type games. I wouldn’t say I’m particularly gifted with those kind of games however I did mange to complete the game on the recommended Hard difficulty, which I felt have the right balance between it feeling rewarding but challenging. You can change the difficulty at any point also.

I wish there had been some better cohesion with the story telling. Everything made sense in the end (kind of) but the beginning felt a little hap hazard and unless I missed a few cutscenes/character dialogue there are parts of the story I still don’t quite get but it’s enjoyable none the less. I do agree with some review comments that the load times can seem a little too long in places also.

Other than that I thought this was a fantastic game, if you’re looking for an RPG with a fun, unique, interesting and challenging gameplay then give this a try!

I kept the game open in the Switch's sleep mode, as you do with Switch games, and the next day, load times in the game were really, really bad. I timed one load time when retrying a level at 51 seconds. As soon as exited the game from the Switch menu, and relaunched it, the load times went back to the standard few seconds. If you're playing on Switch, make sure you save and close the game after every play session; DO NOT keep the game in sleep mode, as you're likely used to doing with other Switch games. Expand

If you still haven't played this hidden gem you're missing out a lot. Soundtrack 10/10 and the undertale like ton is pretty damn good

Very unique and interesting experience! Everhood is eccentric and downright strange in all the right ways.
First is the aesthetic. Whilst some may be quick to pass it off as an 'Undertale clone' or something of the like, the game does some really interesting things with the perspective and art that provide a stunning visual spectacle at times.

The gameplay is really fun and innovative. I played through the game on Hard difficult, and besides some of the 'secret fights' which were incredibly challenging, the main story experience felt incredibly well balanced, with a steady difficulty curve that never felt unfair or undoable.
The music is certainly one of the game's strongest suits, and I found myself humming numerous songs even after I'd put the game down.
Lastly, the narrative provided many thought-provoking questions, and I found myself really engaging and reflecting on some of the questions asked explicitly or implicitly by the game's story.
I'd recommend this game to anyone who enjoys narrative-driven games, or anyone who enjoys a good videogame soundtrack.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An absolute gem, I was initially turned off by the sudden spike in difficulty halfway through, but once realizing that patience was key I was able to beat the game on hard without too much struggle. The music and atmosphere was amazing, and I especially loved seeing psychedelic visuals being used in creative ways.
Basically every complaint I have seen is either from someone who is mad that they are unable to complete the game because they aren't used to a new mechanic, or someone who's issues are based in the switch's faulty hardware and shouldn't reflect the game itself.
This is truly a treasure of a game and I highly recommend it, I have bought it for a friend and if a revised physical limited version releases for the switch I will immediately purchase it.

When a game is divided by acts in a way like Everhood, perhaps the most important thing should be to make sure that each act feels just as enjoyable as the others. Everhood can largely be split into two acts, and while I'd say both have their merits, I believe it's important to state that the first act is considerably weaker than the second. That's not to say it's bad, but I found that the writing and gameplay was greatly improved once the second act kicked in, and characters and battles I had found uninteresting suddenly had an extra kick. The music in this game is great, and in a strange way allows for Everhood to very much be a rhythm game, while throwing away almost every standard concept for such games. I wouldn't say the game is perfect, but it's a damn good experience that got better for me as it went along. Expand

Sure, you spend time with the characters in this game, but not any individual character and not to a personal extent. I think this deters the attachment to almost all the characters in Everhood which doesn't do justice to this games story. This game was so close but yet so far from being a even better game then Undertale but I personally think it failed to understand what made Undertale a great experience story-wise. Although this is the case, the gameplay makes up for it. So, I will say this game is good and definitely deserves a 8 but it could have been a 9 at least. Expand

I'l I love this game obviously its not perfect but thats fine no game is perfect. The music is amazing and the combat too. in the first half where you don't have your arm weaving and dodging the attacks makes you fell really cool. The overworld is nothing to write home about other than running is kinda annoying because you have to double tap the control stick twice to run which is inconvenient but isnt game ruining. The story is very abstract which is a good thing and doing the 180 of needing to kill all the characters you got attached to is really good. At the end of the game the ending gives me a goofy smile on my face every time. Also when i have too kill blue i tear up every time. At times the game is kinda unfair in its difficulty which I don't mind because you can change the difficulty when you die. In the end game is an emotional rpg music game which has a couple rough edges. Expand

This isn’t exactly a rhythm game. While its descriptor may not be accurate, it’s still a marvellous game. Already a cult hit with fans of Undertale and other games of the sort, Everhood is a bizarre and groovy adventure that can’t be missed.

It’s a little hard to deal with initially, but the game is forgiving enough with its difficulty options that you should be able to get the ropes sooner or later. Once you do, it’s tremendous fun. All up it’s not the longest game around, but you certainly won’t regret the time you spend with it.
