Ignorance is bliss in this case. Since I did not play the PC or PS4 versions I enjoyed the game without any expectations. The graphics are awesome for a handheld console and the gameplay is great. I look forward to playing Wolfenstein on the Switch!

This makes quite a change from Mario! I've never played Doom and don't own other consoles so to my mind this is a much welcomed mature title. It plays great, looks great (good enough for me), satisfying weapon progression and is a must buy if you don't mind a high adrenaline, other-worldly gore-fest.

    Good stuff.

I love DOOM's fluidity and brutal sense of humor. Something as simple as shoving a demon's foot down its throat is both awesome and hilarious - and it never gets old (at least not yet).

My only real issue with the game is that there were a few parts where I'd get lost. This could be in part because the objective-guider HUD is super tiny in handheld mode (and the map menu is kind of rigid and confusing to figure out). My only issue with the port is that there's this annoying glitch that makes menus impossible to navigate with your D-pad and left toggle. It's only occurred once for me - and the fix is as simple as restarting your system - but it's still something that should be looked into and patched.

I have never played Doom before. I even havent' played a shooter in years. I am not enjoying this game too much. It is hard to see everything on the portable screen (I only play in portable mode). I turned off motion blur and the other setting (abberation? I cannot recall the term). This helped a bit to make the game appear a bit more clear and crisp. It looks fine and plays fine. However,I have never played Doom before. I even havent' played a shooter in years. However, after playing games that look very crisp in portable mode like Mario, Zelda, Steamworld and Fire Emblem Warriors, I am having a hard time with this game. The gameplay is ok. It's just run and gun, explore a bit, run and gun some more. Dunno. Not really enthralled with this game as others claim to be. OK gameplay and hard to make out visuals makes it a bit of a let down. I did come across uncommon frame rate dips when during sequences with a lot of particles and lighting effects while hoards of demons were attacking me, but only in those few arenas where there were a lot of particle effects. I've also heard complaints about how playing in handheld mode is difficult because the joy cons are fairly small, though I have fairly small hands, so it worked extremely well for me, I even preferred playing it on the go, but if you have larger hands, you might have the same trouble I've heard other people had. And Switch version might be the suckiest when it comes to the visuals, but no other version allows me to pack this game with me /everywhere/. I can and I am slaying demons every morning on my daily tram commute to work. I just sit there for 20 minutes, headphones on, killing them by the dozen.

it runs pretty well on the switch but does have a few hiccups in some of the more densely packed parts of the singleplayer campaign, still not that much of a bother. the fact that you can take this amazing game on the go is just mind-blowing to me and I personally think the full price of the game is worth it, however if you have played this before or have a different system I would like to remind you that it's there, looks slightly better and has a cheaper price tag.

I only recommend picking it up on the switch if you have not played it before, don't have access to another console version of the game or if you want some portable demon destruction on your system

having said all of that this gets a big old solid 8.4 from me for the fun it provides and the sensation of absolute badassery it gives you when you rip demons in half with your bare hands

Secondly, does it run well? hmm yes and no. The downgrade is quie substantial as to be expected...and in docked mode its pretty awful and blurry...digital foundary did a performance test on the game...and the resolution drops as low as 300p in places. The framerate is ok sometimes, but the irregular latency between frames makes it pretty choppy....when you don't want it to be, ie when its frantic.
Thirdly, paying 60 dollars for a game I can play on my xbox one x in 4k 60fps, for 40 dollars is frankly a rip off. why do Nintendo do this? its the same with skyrim, which just looks like the xbox 360 version. skyrim se was released on xbox one for 50 dollars, and its fully remastered WITH mods!
Doom is still fun on the switch, but people are saying its like some miracle to get a good portable fps....well I guess they never played dead ringer 2 on android on the shield tablet. or skyrim on the gpd win handheld (which costs 20 dollars and has mods)
I have a big issue with Nintendo charging so much for games that are cheaper and better on other systems, Otherwise Id give the game a 7

I played this game from start to finish in handheld mode, and there are many highs and a couple of lows, which can be patched in the future.

OK, let's tackle the elephant in the room:

    PERFORMANCE and GRAPHICS.

No, this is not as shiny as PS4 and PC, but you need to see this game in handheld mode in person. And no, it certainly does not hit 720p in handheld, despite what the devs tell you. I have played too many 720p games in handheld mode to tell the difference...

However, it looks pretty damn good in handheld mode. You will be going holy sh*t every two seconds because the game looks dope in handheld mode. Lighting, creepy atmosphere, sparks, explosions, towering bosses (TWO ONLY, unfortunately) look great in handheld mode. The best AAA game you have seen on a tablet yet without question!!

Framerate is where this game sometimes suffers (heavy firefights are a huge culprit), at least for now. I played it on ULTRA-VIOLENCE, and when things got hot, it was like the engine got dipped in molasses. Digital Foundry blamed it on frame pacing, and claimed it could be patched, so there is that. However, those slowdowns don't occur in all scenarios, it is just something to note in case you are super sensitive to frame drops.

There is also a weird glitch that makes doom guy not move at full speed when strafing to the left sometimes, as if he hit a wall. This leads to a lot of deaths and can happen at random, so watch out!

Another annoying glitch is the sound cut-off glitch. It can be fixed by a checkpoint reload/restarting the game, so yeah. That sucks, but not a deal breaker as it happened to me a few times.

    Gameplay

Don't let 30fps stop you from getting this. This game at 30fps plays very well. Not as well as 60fps obviously, but I was pleasantly surprised with how I was absolutely destroying demons IN HANDHELD MODE!! Jesus, there are no words to describe how awesome this game plays, just try out a friend's copy or something, this game is off the chain on Nintendo Switch!

Before you try handheld mode, try my analog settings and hopefully you will be a demon slaying machine on-the-go:

    HORIZONTAL SENSITIVITY - 14%
    VERTICAL SENSITIVITY - 14%
    LOOK SMOOTHING - 70%

    Story

Story is meh. If you want story, play a Telltale game. Or else Doom Guy will curb-stomp you like an imp.

    Multiplayer

Some people say they enjoyed it, but not me. Probably because visually and frame-rate wise it performs kinda lame (IN HANDHELD MODE). You could check it out in TV mode, but it just did not interest me in the slightest. But hey, you may like it, so go ahead and see.

    Arcade Mode

More demon slaying, so it probably is good. I haven't tried it yet, but seeing how the campaign gameplay was solid, I have no doubt arcade will be lit as well.

    Conclusion

Congrats to Nintendo, Bethesda and Panic Button for getting this game on the Switch. It makes for a powerful statement to the gaming community, as well as gives us fans the much needed 3rd party support.

Just checked out L.A. Noire, and that game is looking sweet as well. I suppose my prayers were answered, and now my Switch is doing exactly what my Vita should have done 5 years ago...

    8.5/10, because Metacritic hates in-betweens!!

This port (along with Skyrim and the upcoming Wolfenstein 2) opens so many doors, legitimizing the Switch as a real console to developers that will now think twice before skipping a Nintendo version. The Switch can run fully-fledged games in both docked and handheld mode, better than a lot of people's computers can. If all it takes is slight technical downgrades to port a game to the Switch, the answer is "yes please". Hats off to Bethesda for having faith in Nintendo's system, this is a triumph.

Technically this port is so impressive that sometimes it’s hard to believe it actually exists. It’s the game itself that I have some issues with, as in my opinion its campaign is encumbered by elements that sometimes unnecessarily slow down Doom’s fantastic pace. [01/2018, p.53]

It’s not a perfect port. For those looking to play DOOM purely on the big screen, the Switch version’s janky visuals make it difficult to recommend. Yet, if you’re looking for a portable version of one of the best shooters in recent memory, DOOM thoroughly deserves to be the blood-soaked outlier lurking in your Switch library.
