Boomerang X is a diamond of a 3D action game. While it might not offer beautiful cutscenes or clever dialogue, the action itself constantly manages to amaze. The stellar boomerang mechanics are in perfect harmony with the super fast action. For fans of the genre, Boomerang X is an absolute joy from start to finish.

Dripping with style and absolutely stuffed with incredible combat, Boomerang X offers a rewarding blast of action with every moment of gameplay. It somewhat lacks replayability, but what's already there is staggeringly well executed. Boomerang X is one of the best action games of the year.

Boomerang X is a textbook example of short and sweet. It’s a bite-sized experience that rewards persistence with a vague, mysterious narrative, dynamic combat, challenging enemies, and so much satisfaction when you squeeze out a victory in the last wave. I had to test my mettle and tolerate a bit of slowdown, but Boomerang X is one of the best indies I've played this year.

I had a great time with Boomerang X. The action is tight and it always feels like an expression of skill whenever a level is successfully beaten. The surreal fantasy setting also matches the game’s tone perfectly, providing moments of surprise and wonder with each new level. The simplicity in DANG!’s design really works in their favour – it provides an excellent degree of challenge with unique, memorable mechanics and no wasted time. It’s a masterclass in fast-paced, precision-based 3D action.

Boomerang X is a fast-paced arena shooter with some platforming thrown in. Strategy is key to surviving waves of foes that outnumber you. I only wish there were more of it.

I recommend Boomerang X, but with one last caveat – consider its PC version before taking the plunge on Switch. I did well with this edition, but I think mouse-and-keyboard controls might have made me like it even more. [Issue #54 – September 2021, p. 29]

Boomerang X is a wonderful twist on a single-player arena shooter with excellent environmental story-telling, an interesting weapon, and a buttery smooth combat system. Even though it's completely linear, it still has the strongest Metroid Prime vibes I've felt from a game in ages, and I loved battling through each area as I moved deeper into its mysterious island. I just wish it were longer, because I was having such a great time playing it.

Boomerang X may not be perfect, but it’s perfectly addictive, a game just begging to be replayed. There’s even a built-in speed run timer setting and harder difficulty options and a New Game+ mode underscoring its replayability. Running through its 13 levels another time probably won’t peel back any more of the game’s very thin plot layers, but damn if it isn’t a blast to zip around like an airborne assassin.

Boomerang X features instantly gratifying gameplay that will get its hooks into you immediately. Its arena-based combat encourages you to keep moving and flying through the air in order to avoid death, with your boomerang acting as a kind of portable teleport or hook shot. The overall difficulty is a bit tame for the most part, which incidentally means the game is a bit on the short side, but there’s plenty of potential for repeat playthroughs and speed runs thanks to the fun, addictive gameplay. If you’re a fan of frantic, fast-paced first-person action, then this one will be right up your alley.

With Boomerang X, the DANG studio goes straight to the point and brilliantly exploits a lively and enjoyable gameplay, which allows the most beautiful bloody choreographies.

Although with a different nature and less fiercely hardcore, Boomerang X reminded me with undisguised enthusiasm that independent gem that goes by the name of Devil Daggers. Also in the debut feature of DANG! it all revolves around fierce, tight-knit gameplay, expertly built around brilliant controls and a fast-paced pace. Massacre legions of creeping blackish monstrosities with exasperated aerial acrobatics on the notes of an exotic oriental soundtrack proves to be a tasty satisfaction: even within its limits (starting with a price threshold of 19.99 € not exactly popular), Boomerang X is only the 'latest in a long series of targets centered by Devolver Digital.

Boomerang X is challenging and has a great combat system. Despite being quite abstract about the story, the desire is to play for several hours on end. Fly and play against your enemies in this amazing game.

It’s a solid action game, and one that will especially appeal to those who appreciate stylish combat.

Boomerang X is a very unique shooter where you use a boomerang. Clever and well design, it is a good option if you’re looking for something different and familiar at the same time.

Boomerang X is incredibly fun and we loved it from the start. The combat system is very unique and it never bores the player.

It is another time when I got fooled by the hype and praise from the players. It is one of those ports, that had the goal of PORTING the game, and not making it ENJOYABLE to play. If you buy this, that means you payed for a super thin toilet paper, which rips every time you try to actually use it, but if you are a hardcore player, then you will find fingering yourself a pleasant pastime.

Among all problems with this port the first thing you will notice is sluggish controls. The worst thing you could imagine in a FAST PASED SHOOTER is delayed controls. The camera move, abilities, jumping - everything is this game is delayed. Kind of makes it special when you eventually hit the target without the use of any ability. But things get worse if you try to play with gyroscope on. The time to process your controller tilt just adds up which slows down your gameplay even more. The next thing you will notice is that even on the first arena the game lags. You expect that so stylised game will run well? Then cool your expectations. Not only it runs at 30 fps, but also somehow lags even with a few enemies in your sight, and things even get worse with your progress when groups of monsters become hoards of titans. On the last arenas it just turns into a slow motion simulator, because with all this lag and delay it is terribly hard to play.

Optionally, if you changed your keybinds and died then one half of them will reset to default. For no reason. And also the other half of them will reset after relaunching the game. Gives you some motivation to run like a rat to avoid death, huh.

In the end, this port just not worth it, not even a single penny for "so much effort invested" in it. There are numerous superior shooters to choose from on the Switch. (Almost) anything will be better than this.

Extremely fun mix of momentum-based movement and projectile aiming. Short but replayable.

Boomerang X is proof that not all concepts were meant to be executed. This game feels like a demo; there's very little content and no level gets super complex. You do the same frustrating thing a few times and then the game is over. It's simply boring. Full Review »
