Longtime fans who want to relive the original experiences will be less thrilled, given that the work gone in these remakes feels less ambitious than it should, with its lacklustre visual performance and changes to the art style, while new players won't be very pleased at the relative lack of options that could bring the game up to modern standards of turn-based strategy games. Nonetheless, the very fun gameplay mechanics remain firmly in place, and they are as good as ever, which is a very good point in favour of Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp.

Advance Wars 1+2: ReBoot Camp is a great game for newcomers to the turn-based strategy genre. Bringing this IP back means revaluating a hidden gem, but the additions aren't enough to make this new version a definitive edition of such classic games.

Aside from the audiovisual presentation, the Advance Wars remake plays it considerably safe. That isn't a bad thing in itself, particularly since the foundations of the game mostly hold up. There is still plenty of fun to be had here. But it also means that this package is less interesting than it could have been.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp brings back two classic tactics games with mixed results. While the various COs and their animations are exceptional, accompanied with welcomed voice acting, the 3D artwork for the environments, troops and vehicles clashes with the 2D drawings. The missions themselves hold up incredibly well twenty years later with vast unit variety and choice for most battles. Bare bones online modes don't offer quite enough opportunity for replayability, but the package still stands tall with a map editor and missions with additional maps.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is the return of one of those sagas that Nintendo had forgotten, despite the affection it arouses in its fans. The return may not be perfect, but it's worked hard enough to turn this reboot into a remarkable title that every fan of the genre will enjoy and that also works as an excellent entry point.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a faithful adaptation of the Game Boy Advance classic, with charming 3D visuals giving it a welcome facelift. With the gameplay mechanics largely untouched 22 years after the release of the original however, Advance Wars feels rusty and basic compared to more modern strategy games on the Nintendo Switch.

What makes Advance War 1+2: Re-Boot Camp an exciting prospect today is the same as what made the games compelling when they were first released: fun and approachable strategic gameplay that is built on a solid foundation. While the first title certainly shows its age in the latter stages, the moments of magic that earned Advance Wars a passionate fan base are still there. If turn-based tactical combat is your thing, there is plenty to sink your teeth into here.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a must-play for casual onlookers, and veterans of the series will probably get a kick out of replaying these two classics. It's just a shame that the online multiplayer is half-baked; this franchise certainly deserves better.

Re-Boot Camp rescues Advance Wars' brilliant gameplay formula from a 15-year hiatus, but does so without ever displaying any amount of ambition. Its lackluster online multiplayer offering is emblematic of a re-release that shines on purely through the ingenuity of the original's gameplay loop.

An enjoyable experience for veteran users, but not for newbies.[Recommended]

Maybe, of course, I'm not giving the game enough credit. Or, to put it another way, am I critiquing the game when I should be critiquing myself? This is a generous, elegant, efficient tactics game that I still take great pleasure from, that I can still lose hours and hours to, and it's also one which, if you step back, absolutely allows you to realise that you're frequently doing ugly things beneath a cheery facade. This might be another layer of its design. When are things ever simple? Maybe, this is a complex game that a person can meet on a number of levels, and the levels change as the person does. The new Advance Wars, just like the original, arrives at a strange time. Nintendo appeared to recognize this last year when, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it delayed Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp indefinitely. But the toylike soldiers exaggeratedly stomping cities into submission and cartoon characters being wiped out by artillery fire feel disconnected from the real-world war that gave Nintendo pause in 2022. In other words, it’s less off-putting than one might think to have fun with an urban military wargame right now. If anything, the return of Advance Wars feels like a link to a simpler time, made better with age and reverence for a long-ignored, still-great franchise. [Polygon Recommends]

Advance Wars is the kind of strategy game you can easily lose yourself in, where one more map “accidentally” turns into a few more hours of playing. That was true in 2001 when the original hit the Game Boy Advance — and it’s just as true today.

The gameplay remains entirely unchanged, and it has the same addictive gameplay loop from years ago. It’s simple enough for non-strategy game fans to pick up and play and satisfying enough for strategy game fans to sink many hours into. The remade graphics, sound, and presentation are nice, but arguably unnecessary, especially with consideration to the GBA being included with Nintendo Switch Online. It modernized the graphics and sound but added very little to what otherwise would have been the charm of the GBA presentation. There are several smaller quality of life features and new things such as online play, so it’s a nice little package that blends the content of the original two games. Absolutely worth picking up for old fans of the series and newcomers alike. Full Review »

As someone who's always struggled to get into strategy games, I think I've finally found the one. So far literally everything is perfect. The music, the animation, the art direction, not even mentioning the ganeplay.the only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because I haven't played all of it yet. But if you're like me and have been waiting for a strategy game that just feels like the perfect starting point, look no further. Also I don't know how good casual mode is, but I like the challenge if classic so far, it feels like just enough to push me to improve. Tldr; I highly recommend this game, especially to newcomers to the genre like myself Full Review »
