The gameplay is extremely varied thanks to the objectives in each battle, the solutions to the battles are always numerous and resemble more of a tactical puzzle. Even if you dislike the anime stylization of the story, the characters, or the general sauce around them, both games are excellent tactical strategies in the style of Battle Isle, and indeed the original Wars series from which Advance Wars sprang. Advance Wars 1 and 2 are timeless classics and I know those are big words but these games are deserving of that honour. I was obsessed with Advance Wars 2 back in the day and now, I'm loving the franchise yet again. Plus, fans of the series can rest easy knowing that Nintendo hasn't abandoned the Advance Wars franchise and it makes me wonder what's next.

Two great classics from the GBA era brought to Nintendo Switch with excellent results, Single player and multiplayer are the two souls of a strategy package in Nintendo sauce perfect for every type of player. Simple to learn, hard to master, impossible to leave on the shelf.

The new art style doesn't spark that much joy in us, but the strategic genius at Advance Wars' heart is completely intact here, making for an excellent paired package of gaming greats on the Switch.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a faithful reintroduction to the series for new and long-time fans. It’s great to have Advance Wars back in our lives, with updated visuals and voicework that bring this title to life. Hopefully, this means the beginning of all-new adventures for Orange Star!

If you liked the original Advance Wars games back on the Game Boy Advance, this is everything you wanted the re-boot to be. The battles are still deceptively clever, the strategy is still in full force, and the character designs still slap.

WayForward’s efforts should be commended though, and there’s much to celebrate here – not least the fact that Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp exists in the first place. I have really missed this series, and to see it back in such an emboldened way is heartening. It’s as addictive and tense an experience as it ever was, packed with punchy strategic brilliance and reimagined for a whole new generation to conquer. Now, I just hope that there’s enough interest out there that Nintendo considers greenlighting Advance Wars: Dual Strike and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin to receive the same treatment… but, let’s be grateful for what we do have for now.

The love for Advance Wars oozes from this remake. The adjustments are subtle but tasteful and the new designs of the COs and units are among the best in the series. In terms of content, this package is worth the full price.

Who is Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp for? What type of player should consider it? I could tell you that actually, anyone can take it at any time. Although we are dealing with markedly complicated games and with a significant challenge, the truth is that their good work at the tutorial level makes them extremely easy to take. Just keep in mind that you will have to go through a learning process, which does not mean that you will not enjoy the experience from the first moment. It seems to me that regardless of whether you are a veteran of the franchise with many hours on the battlefield, or on the contrary, strategy games are not so much your thing, these new versions of Advance Wars 1 and 2 should be in your radar, really, are fun and pure adrenaline.

Advance Wars has always been one of the best Nintendo games, and this remake by Wayforward (visually very cute and content-packed) does it justice. It won't take you long to learn its simple and intuitive gameplay, but you'll be able to play it for all of eternity and not get bored, against the AI or in the endless multiplayer mode.

20 years on, Advance Wars is still a great series. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is full of content, stylish graphics and lots of battles. Wayforward is perhaps too faithful to the original games and lacks some of the quality of life features that could improve the game. And we also miss Dual Strike, to have the whole trilogy in one place. But Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a great addition to the Switch line-up and a great experience for players new and old.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a delightful reimagining of two classic GBA strategy titles. The gameplay here remains as endlessly addictive, finely balanced, and challenging as ever, and the addition of a handful of modern conveniences and the ability to play against friends online makes for a slick overall package. With a crisp, clean new art style that adds lots of new animations and cutscenes, a remastered soundtrack, and voice-acting in the mix, this is a polished return to Advance Wars action that's got us fully addicted to the series all over again. This is the sort of game you'll reserve a permanent space for on your console, a timeless experience you'll keep tucked away on your Switch for the foreseeable future.

With Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re-Boot Camp both GBA classics remain great turn-based strategy games that are complex and accessible. The scope is also greatly motivating and amazing with at least 45 hours only for the two solo campaigns. The presentation is nice, but cheap, but does not change anything about the gaming fun you'll have, even if you're not a fan of the genre.

Advance Wars' tactical gameplay proves timeless. Twenty years after the release of the second game, playing both games is still enjoyable. What's more, you get a lot of content, allowing you dozens of hours ahead, and all of that is complimented by a delightful soundtrack and fantastic gameplay. Visually, the new 3D concept does not come across completely perfect and the challenge can be a bit trial and error, but these are points you can certainly live with thanks to the extremely potent overall package that every fan of the franchise should have. Newcomer and up for strategic titles? Even then it's a no brainer.

Despite it being all these years later, Advance Wars fills the same spot in my life as it did when I was a kid. A game I can play on and off whenever I have a chance - the reasons for it have just changed with a small child now. With a refreshed looked and sound and just a sprinkling of quality-of-life updates on top of two amazing games, Advance Wars: Re-Boot Camp continues the trend of remade games from Nintendo's past that are solid but just need that little freshen-up for the modern player. Re-Boot Camp is suited for newcomers to the series and veterans alike. Come join the Advance Wars fan club; there are dozens of us.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp was developed with much love. The visual presentation is excellent, not to mention how the game mechanics were adjusted so that more people can enjoy one of the funniest strategy series in video games. Ultimately Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a fairly successful remake of the first two Advance Wars games. While appreciation of the new aesthetic may vary, the game retains the tightly designed strategic combat of the original duology while adding a few welcome tweaks. It’s a shame this remake doesn’t have a robust online experience to offer returning players. If you’ve never tried the series out and enjoy strategy games, this is the best way to experience the games for the first time. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough additions to make the remake a must-have if you’ve already poured hundreds of hours into the GBA games.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is exactly what it promises. A polished and fine tuned remake of the original two Advance Wars games. In this package you’ll get two great strategic experiences that come with plenty of missions, objectives, multiplayer modes and even a map creator to keep you entertained for a good long while. Though the music may get a tad repetitive and the game feels best suited for short play sessions, these two games are a great return to form for the Advance Wars series. It does leave me hopeful that the next iteration will put less emphasis on the visual “Re-Boot” and more on the gameplay “Advancement” of this franchise.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a pure strategy game that lovers of the genre will enjoy. As a remake it does very well, both with the aesthetic change and with the new additions. Things get better with the multiplayer, although in the online part they limited the matchmaking a lot. Without a doubt, a classic that comes back to life.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a darn fine remake of two the GBA's most addictive games. It doesn't exactly change too much from the original, but it adds some new features, more multiplayer options, and a glossy new coat of paint. That's pretty much all it needs to be. Advance Wars ate hours of my life as a kid, and it certainly has the same potential now that I'm older.

Return of Advance Wars is great news. After 20 years you have compilation of two catchy strategies with vast amount of gameplay. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is one of the better returns to a classic tactics series. Both individual games have aged exponentially well with campaigns that are more enjoyable and charming than you’d think, and just as many thrilling fights to match. Developer Wayforward deserves credit for earnestly including quality of life and approachability options for more players, but it can ever so rarely leave a difficulty imbalance from level to level. However, that is hardly a scuff on the excellent product provided. Smart battlefield design accompanied with engaging objectives make for some excellent missions to chip away at. Similarly, the colouring and model design is superb, further immersing the player in commanding a battlefield as an ultimate strategist. Players are in excellent hands with Re-Boot Camp. It’s up to them to use those tools to triumph in battle and come out on top. Hoorah.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is the best option to enjoy two strategy classics, renewed with improved graphics and an online mode to play with friends from all over the world. Nintendo, Intelligent Systems and WayForward hit the mark (almost) across the board: Advance Wars Re-Boot Camp is a product with attention to every detail, an all-round remake that preserves all the good that was in the original products and makes them also attractive to the new generations thanks to a series of precautions and improvements to the user experience. Whether you are looking for a strategic hit and run that introduces you to the genre or one that is only apparently soft but capable of making you sweat a lot, here you will find lots of content and gameplay as punctual as a Swiss watch, which makes the balance and the plurality of approaches some of its cornerstones. We weren't particularly impressed by the new art direction and we would have liked to have access to the two episodes of the series released on Nintendo DS as well, but these are small details in a picture that has left us very satisfied. Now, to what saint do we have to devote ourselves to have a remake of F-Zero?

A juicy collection, full of content that aims to introduce an entirely new audience to the series, while it manages to bring back memories to old players in the best way possible. Lack of content that would have been meaningful to the older player is a drawback, but not enough to deprive players of a fantastic collection of games that can offer hours and hours of gameplay.

Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp is a wonderful recreation of a long-neglected classic. The games pull you right in with smooth and satisfying gameplay, a catchy art style, and tons of fun features for many added hours of play. Now the question is, when will we get the rest of the Advance Wars reboots?
  47. 80
The real value here comes from the possibility that you may be someone like me, someone who had never played these games before. For us, this is a great deal. If you are into strategy games and only know Advance Wars because maybe you’d seen the box in a Gamestop in 2002, then this is a pretty easy recommend.

What this release means is that the engrossing strategic gameplay of the Game Boy Advance entries remains as addictive and enjoyable now as they did all those years ago, a testament to the original developer’s well-crafted gameplay mechanics. The only problem is the limited online because being exclusive to your friends and not having a ranking/open matchmaking feature is a huge opportunity missed. The rest of the package in Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is an easy recommendation for anyone who wants to challenge their tactical know-how on the miniature battlefield.
  50. 80
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp isn't a perfect title on its own merits, but it's addictive, stylish, and fun. The wonderful characters make up for an uninteresting and predictable plot. It'd be great to see more Advance Wars and other Wars titles make their way over to the system, but adding matchmaking for online play would be a must.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp offers two excellent strategy titles which will keep players busy for a ton of hours. Whether you’re an old fan happy to be back in command or someone enlisting for the first time, there’s a lot to recommend here. A bit more work updating things, particularly the balance of the latter half of the first game and the multiplayer experience, would have been welcome but that shouldn’t stop those wanting an excellent strategy experience from picking this one up.

After this remake, Advance Wars doesn’t feel like a 20-year-old game at all. Nice graphics merge with the original systems – and those are pretty ageless. There are two massive campaigns, an editor, both local and online multiplayer variants and other details which make this an ideal package for all the strategists out there.
  53. May 2, 2023

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is one of those remakes that maybe does too much in some ways while doing too little in others, but the quality of the original games shines through brightly. I have some mild issues with the visuals and technical performance, but what is great about these games, the tactical gameplay, can’t really be hindered by that kind of thing.

Advance Wars’ tone doesn’t always work, but I’m a different person now than I was 20 years ago, and the world is a much different, much stranger, and often much scarier place. I don’t know that you could make the original game today, at least not as it is. But I appreciate how its sequel grapples with the complicated subject matter, even if there are no easy answers to the questions I’m sure Nintendo would rather we didn’t ask.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp most importantly gives two Game Boy Advance games a fresh coat of paint to make them look a bit nicer on the Switch. We fully understand that, because the games that lie at the core have aged tremendously.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp brings back to life a series that made the history of the genre and which the most loyal players missed. The title brings together the first two chapters of the saga, offering two pleasant campaigns and other modes that help increase the longevity of the experience, especially thanks to the online multiplayer component that opens the door to competitive challenge. Net of its light-hearted tones, we are talking about a package with layered gameplay and characterized by a large number of variables, with what it takes to satisfy even the most expert users. In short, the "old school" of turn-based strategy shines again on Nintendo Switch.

Is this remastered compilation tossed aside? Not in the least, since we can feel WayForward's desire to modernize the cult games of 20 years ago. But even the best will in the world is not always enough. The acceleration of the speed of the game in *2 as well as the possibility of replaying the round does not manage to put itself at the level of the dynamism of the current productions. The remasters then suffer from a slight lack of punch, a bit like a tank out of gas, to rise to the height of the original opuses. Despite this, Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising remain very good complete and accessible strategy games. If those who have already played it may be disappointed by the lack of new features to enjoy, the curious who have not touched them can discover it in very good conditions from April 21 on Nintendo Switch.

    80
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp marks the return of two classic strategy games, and WayForward has done a stellar job bringing them back to life while never sacrificing the formidable challenge and anime-esque charm of fictional warfare the series has always nailed. While some of the new features are lightweight and the addition of flourishes like voice acting and level creation will prove meaningless to certain folks, this remaster still supplies a solid foundation I pray Nintendo isn’t afraid to build on. Few in the genre can compete with the immediate simplicity and approachability of Advance Wars, but Nintendo needs to take it further.

Newcomers to the series may not find the charm in the graphics or music, and others may balk at the price tag for this collection, especially with juggernauts like Tactics Ogre Reborn and Fire Emblem competing for attention. Still, it’s hard to argue with a collection like this. A sleek, yet imperfect presentation coupled with dozens of single and multiplayer missions make Advance Wars 1 + 2 Re-Boot Camp engaging and addictive, for veterans and new recruits alike.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is packed to the brim with content and has that addictive “just one more mission” feel. Though some may find the story to be unserious and shallow, it’s completely accessible and enjoyable to newcomers of the genre like myself while also providing depth and challenge for veterans. Enthusiasts will get hundreds of hours of entertainment out of the game.

For those interested in easing into the turn-based strategy genre, or those with a lot of experience, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a strong option on Nintendo Switch. With two complete games in one, there's a lot of meat in the package, and that's not even factoring in the multiplayer options. WayForward has done a very nice job adhering closely to the Game Boy Advance originals, while offering enough tweaks to make it feel like this package was a better decision compared to putting the originals on Nintendo Switch Online. It's been a while since fans of the series have had a wholly-new game to enjoy, so hopefully this package will lead to more from Nintendo.
  77. Apr 19, 2023
    80
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp doesn’t drastically change the core gameplay from the original, but it didn’t need to. Back in 2001, Advance Wars played beautifully. A simple concept paired with deep systems allowed the series to withstand the test of time -- something that’s even clearer with a modern Switch version. Playing Re-Boot Camp feels like revisiting an old friend and finding out their best qualities remained intact over the years. For those visiting for the first time on Switch, prepare for a new lifelong friendship.
  78. 80
I find myself in a conflicted position with Advance Wars 1+2: Reboot Camp. On the one hand, it is essential. To this day, these are two of the finest tactics games of all time. On the other hand, there is no reason for this remake to exist when a re-release would have been sufficient. If it’s Nintendo’s way of exploring a revival for the series then great, and I hope it sells a bucketload. I just wish WayForward’s talents had have been deployed better.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-boot Camp feels like it’s for the fans who loved the games back on Game Boy Advance, and despite some issues, it’s a superb package overall.

The new and improved Advance Wars transports us back to the days of Game Boy Advance classics in the greatest way possible, with enhanced visuals and quality of life changes, bringing the same enjoyment as before with the inclusion of a new somewhat functioning multiplayer mode.

Even with a subpar multiplayer experience, Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is still a game worth experiencing. It's a triumph of tactical strategy with a vibrant coat of paint. It's a reminder of what a gem of a franchise Nintendo has been sitting on for over a decade and represents a hope that maybe there's more Advance Wars on the horizon.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is simultaneously a triumph in preserving the timeless strategy gameplay of the past and a huge missed opportunity to give it a rejuvenated platform that could attract new players.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp takes a strategy classic and buffs it up for a modern audience – the fact that it is so faithful to the originals only reinforces how brilliant they were in the first place. Re-Boot Camp is essential for fans of tactical warfare, and a perfect companion for Nintendo Switch; hopefully its release will rekindle interest in the series, and bring us a long overdue new entry.

Wayforward's generous remake package keeps much of what made the original Game Boys titles great, with some significant improvements to presentation and multiplayer.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a very respectable retrofit of two of the best old-school tactical strategy games of all time. Some may question who the audience for this package is as it doesn’t offer much new content for experienced commanders, but these are still objectively high-quality games and this remake does little to diminish their charms. If you’re new to the Advance Wars series or just looking for a more convenient way to play some of its best entries again, this remake is likely to capture your heart (and free time).
  86. After 20 years, it's impossible to say that this remastered version has anything like the charm of the original games. But Advance Wars is a fun portable console title that you can dive deep into wherever you take your Nintendo Switch.

For the old fans, Re-Boot Camp is practically perfect. The games look much better, while the mechanical guts are properly preserved. On the other hand, if you remember these games being frustrating, that feeling will persist. If you’ve never played the Advance Wars games, you’re in for a fascinating experience. The heavy Fire Emblem influences are balanced with a more brutal, more inconsistent pace that will keep you on your toes at all times. I found myself (an old fan) elated and infuriated in equal measure. If you’re looking for a strategy RPG set apart from the rest, good news! Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp isn’t quite like anything you’ve played before. Love it or hate it, you’ll certainly be engaged.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp leverages its already strong foundation with some very nice quality of life improvements to offer an almost definitive version of a Game Boy Advance classic. However, limited multiplayer options and uneven difficulty modes stop it from being the best that if could be.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp stands out amongst the crowd, despite the two decades that have passed since the original games were released on the Gameboy Advance. If you’re tired of swords, sorcery, and reading through small novellas filled with fantasy jargon and melodrama, this will be a wonderful breath of fresh air. Underneath the deceptively cheerful Saturday morning cartoon vibe lies two games that will test your understanding of the gameplay mechanics, your ability to plan ahead, and, quite often, your patience. Whilst it’s unfortunate that the games could not have been made more accessible to newcomers, those looking for a challenge will certainly find it here. Multiplayer functionality and custom map features also have the potential to keep you playing long after you’re finished with the campaigns. As long as you don’t mind the occasional difficulty spike, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a worthy addition to your game library.

The various unit types in Advance Wars perfectly blend with resource management, offering engaging gameplay that, staying true to its roots, is best enjoyed in handheld mode and in short sessions. It's a successful adaptation of two classic games, albeit somewhat simplistic.

Re-Boot Camp is a loving recreation of a pair of games that fans of the series have been wanting to return to for years. It’s extremely good at what it does, and with added features like multiplayer and a map creator, you can even go head-to-head with friends in a streamlined battle of wits.

Longtime fans who want to relive the original experiences will be less thrilled, given that the work gone in these remakes feels less ambitious than it should, with its lacklustre visual performance and changes to the art style, while new players won't be very pleased at the relative lack of options that could bring the game up to modern standards of turn-based strategy games. Nonetheless, the very fun gameplay mechanics remain firmly in place, and they are as good as ever, which is a very good point in favour of Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp.

Advance Wars 1+2: ReBoot Camp is a great game for newcomers to the turn-based strategy genre. Bringing this IP back means revaluating a hidden gem, but the additions aren't enough to make this new version a definitive edition of such classic games.

Aside from the audiovisual presentation, the Advance Wars remake plays it considerably safe. That isn't a bad thing in itself, particularly since the foundations of the game mostly hold up. There is still plenty of fun to be had here. But it also means that this package is less interesting than it could have been.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp brings back two classic tactics games with mixed results. While the various COs and their animations are exceptional, accompanied with welcomed voice acting, the 3D artwork for the environments, troops and vehicles clashes with the 2D drawings. The missions themselves hold up incredibly well twenty years later with vast unit variety and choice for most battles. Bare bones online modes don't offer quite enough opportunity for replayability, but the package still stands tall with a map editor and missions with additional maps.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is the return of one of those sagas that Nintendo had forgotten, despite the affection it arouses in its fans. The return may not be perfect, but it's worked hard enough to turn this reboot into a remarkable title that every fan of the genre will enjoy and that also works as an excellent entry point.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a faithful adaptation of the Game Boy Advance classic, with charming 3D visuals giving it a welcome facelift. With the gameplay mechanics largely untouched 22 years after the release of the original however, Advance Wars feels rusty and basic compared to more modern strategy games on the Nintendo Switch.

What makes Advance War 1+2: Re-Boot Camp an exciting prospect today is the same as what made the games compelling when they were first released: fun and approachable strategic gameplay that is built on a solid foundation. While the first title certainly shows its age in the latter stages, the moments of magic that earned Advance Wars a passionate fan base are still there. If turn-based tactical combat is your thing, there is plenty to sink your teeth into here.

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp is a must-play for casual onlookers, and veterans of the series will probably get a kick out of replaying these two classics. It's just a shame that the online multiplayer is half-baked; this franchise certainly deserves better.

Re-Boot Camp rescues Advance Wars' brilliant gameplay formula from a 15-year hiatus, but does so without ever displaying any amount of ambition. Its lackluster online multiplayer offering is emblematic of a re-release that shines on purely through the ingenuity of the original's gameplay loop.

Maybe, of course, I'm not giving the game enough credit. Or, to put it another way, am I critiquing the game when I should be critiquing myself? This is a generous, elegant, efficient tactics game that I still take great pleasure from, that I can still lose hours and hours to, and it's also one which, if you step back, absolutely allows you to realise that you're frequently doing ugly things beneath a cheery facade. This might be another layer of its design. When are things ever simple? Maybe, this is a complex game that a person can meet on a number of levels, and the levels change as the person does. The new Advance Wars, just like the original, arrives at a strange time. Nintendo appeared to recognize this last year when, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it delayed Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp indefinitely. But the toylike soldiers exaggeratedly stomping cities into submission and cartoon characters being wiped out by artillery fire feel disconnected from the real-world war that gave Nintendo pause in 2022. In other words, it’s less off-putting than one might think to have fun with an urban military wargame right now. If anything, the return of Advance Wars feels like a link to a simpler time, made better with age and reverence for a long-ignored, still-great franchise. [Polygon Recommends]

Advance Wars is the kind of strategy game you can easily lose yourself in, where one more map “accidentally” turns into a few more hours of playing. That was true in 2001 when the original hit the Game Boy Advance — and it’s just as true today.

The gameplay remains entirely unchanged, and it has the same addictive gameplay loop from years ago. It’s simple enough for non-strategy game fans to pick up and play and satisfying enough for strategy game fans to sink many hours into. The remade graphics, sound, and presentation are nice, but arguably unnecessary, especially with consideration to the GBA being included with Nintendo Switch Online. It modernized the graphics and sound but added very little to what otherwise would have been the charm of the GBA presentation. There are several smaller quality of life features and new things such as online play, so it’s a nice little package that blends the content of the original two games. Absolutely worth picking up for old fans of the series and newcomers alike. Full Review »

As someone who's always struggled to get into strategy games, I think I've finally found the one. So far literally everything is perfect. The music, the animation, the art direction, not even mentioning the ganeplay.the only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because I haven't played all of it yet. But if you're like me and have been waiting for a strategy game that just feels like the perfect starting point, look no further. Also I don't know how good casual mode is, but I like the challenge if classic so far, it feels like just enough to push me to improve.
