CoD: RtV is a painfully generic and short campaign with escort missions from hell, laden with clown car syndrome (where impossible numbers of enemies constantly pour out from a building/doorway) in order to pad the length. The game runs at a consistent 5-10 FPS and constantly eats inputs. Sometimes it runs so poorly that you're prevented from even firing your weapon which can result in your death. It's actually fairly easy to die in this game on the normal (hardened) difficulty due to unfair explosions, especially in the later levels where the enemies start spamming grenades. The gunplay is some of the worst I've ever experienced. The combination of the PSP controls, no aim assist, extremely agile enemies, remarkably inaccurate weaponry, and all-around awful hitboxes make the moment to moment gameplay a chore. Even though the game is linear, the geometry is mapped out horribly, making moving your character an exercise in frustration, not to mention making it harder to get away from grenades. You'll be constantly griefed by your teammates as they slap you around to get past you, usually pushing you out into enemy fire, only to stand out in the open, typically not even firing their gun, and then die immediately, only for the next one to do the same thing 3 seconds later. Even for a PSP first-person shooter, this game is horrid. It feels like playing a pre-alpha build of something they were making for the PS2, but then attempted to back-port it to the PSP without optimizing it at all. Seriously, this game has some of the most consistently poor performance I've ever seen. I'm a big fan of the CoD series, but I can easily say this is the worst entry I've played, and the worst FPS I've been subjected to in recent memory, if not ever. Expand

  1. It is fair to say that I was completely amazed when I booted the PSP up for a quick go, and then realised that I was still playing the damned game four hours later. I can’t reiterate enough, that I never thought that a handheld FPS could work as well as this.

Throughout the game, you'll find all sorts of signs that the developers knew what would ruin the experience, and so worked overtime to avoid those pitfalls. As a result, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory is a serious contender for the handheld FPS crown. [Apr 2007, p.51]
  3. The gameplay has been made more accessible but nonetheless engaging for the handheld, and the presentation, particularly the sound, is great. The PSP is not perfectly suited for first person shooters, but this is about as good as it can get.
