  1. The gameplay has been made more accessible but nonetheless engaging for the handheld, and the presentation, particularly the sound, is great. The PSP is not perfectly suited for first person shooters, but this is about as good as it can get.
  2. This is a totally original title with all of the polish and exciting gameplay we’ve come to expect from the Call of Duty name. It’s just a shame that the control scheme wasn’t a bit more refined.

Throughout the game, you'll find all sorts of signs that the developers knew what would ruin the experience, and so worked overtime to avoid those pitfalls. As a result, Call of Duty: Roads to Victory is a serious contender for the handheld FPS crown. [Apr 2007, p.51]
  4. Brilliantly tailored to the PSP, with varied gameplay and astonishing audio and visuals, this is an easy recommendation to WWII fanatics and civilians alike.

Call of Duty: Roads to Victory, however, proves that not only can the Big One be done respectably on the small screen, it can at times be downright engaging. [May 2007, p.78]

While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it's still an exciting and enjoyable triumph of visuals and sound on the PSP.
  7. Word War II first-person shooters are a dime a dozen on the consoles so it is refreshing to see one make it to Sony’s handheld without losing much of what makes these games so much fun.

That being said, I came to CoD: RtV right after playing CoD 3 on the PS2 (the only two CoD games I’ve ever played, for what that’s worth) and it was an enjoyable experience all the way through. I thought the graphics were good, the sound was great, the gameplay was action-packed and varied throughout the different missions and campaigns, and I never found myself getting bored or wondering when it was going to be over. The game is pretty much an “on-rails” type of FPS, meaning you’re going from objective to objective in a more or less linear fashion as opposed to Medal of Honor: Heroes which has more of an open world way of doing each mission. My favorite mission, which is a definite outlier from the rest of the game, was the air-to-air mission where you’re a gunner on a B-24. I think they may have done that on a previous CoD game, but it was a neat change of pace here and new to me. The game played mostly smooth with only one instance of glitching. In that case, one of my squad mates got glitched into a wall, and that character was needed to open the door for us to continue the mission. I tried everything I could to un-stick him from the wall from shooting at him to throwing grenades at him but nothing worked. Ultimately, I just had to restart the game, and I didn’t have that problem again. With that being said, this is still a fun and enjoyable game that will keep you entertained and wanting to keep pressing forward. Of the three World War 2 FPSs I’ve played for the PSP, Medal of Honor: Heroes is tops in my book, but this game is just a bit behind but still ahead of Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 for me. Full Review »
