I have always been under the charm of this game, even at my most frustrated. It is truly a work of art and a defining moment in games as a whole, but it is not totally without its flaws. It is truly a work of art and a defining moment in games as a whole, but it is not totally without its flaws. The controls are tight, but they lack a certain intuitiveness since the game was created in a time when controls had not yet truly adapted to 3-D environments. The gunplay can be frustrating, and much of the game has strange choices of camera angles, switching from the classic view of the NES titles to more cinematic and angled views, which doesn't lend itself to aiming a weapon. Stealth is something this game still does well, and provides a similar tension to most recent games while sneaking around. The AI can be a little sketchy and inconsistent, but they still serve their purpose.
What I have found to be the core of this title's survivability is its script and unique approach to the gamer. It breaks the fourth wall on several occasions, which highlights a certain respect and acknowledgement Kojima has with the participants of his art. While not all of the concepts within the script hit their mark on a believable scale, it is made sure that they are coherent and carry the underlying themes of war and identity. In short, it is a game that knows its a game, and celebrates it.
Though it can be gimmicky, and hasn't dated the way I always thought it would, it remains perfectly playable and engaging, often forcing me to remember a day where games were less accessible and had a more severe learning curve. While bordering the line of reality and 90s cheese, it is unapologetic. It doesn't care if you like it or not.

The third installment of the Metal Gear series is a revolutionary video game involving espionage. The game is far from perfect, despite the nostalgic approach that many use with bias. Outdated A.I. for its time and awkward controls are the only issues that one could have with Metal Gear Solid.

Yes yes yes, I know everything is excellent, EXCEPT for the dialogues. Cheesy dialogues are probably the appeal of MGS, but it is not an excuse for the awfulness of them. The dialogues are so corny I couldn't help but cringe like hell. Don't tell me about the Japanese version since I played both Japanese and English versions and they are just as bad!!

Muy divertido, todavía puede ser jugable de hecho. Es una clara obra maestra y nadie pueda dudar de eso. Nadie puede dudar del que es uno de los mejores protagonistas de videojuegos: Solid Snake.

    This game is nessecary to get into the series. The only reason that I am giving it an 8 out of 10 is because the gameplay did not age well and could be frusterating at times. But, it is still necessary because of the great story that it sets up;

An interactive movie experience that will surprise you and challenge you in different ways. Despite overcoming the extreme weight of launching or relaunching a franchise once again, Metal Gear Solid feels dated even by 1998's standards. It's a game that has one foot set in the past and the other in the future. A must-play for video game fans and gamers all around and i highly recommend it for the beginner's who want something gripping to start with and the hardcore gamers who have run out of rich experiences to play. Loved this game. Even though I was really bad at it, the story was gripping and the genes and ant-nuclear themes were really interesting. Gameplay was a little weird and could have given more options at times. Not perfect, but great.

Many regard this game to be the best the original Playstation has to offer and I can easily see why.

Metal Gear Solid is the 2nd game in the Metal Gear series I've completed, the first being Metal Gear Solid 3 in January of 2014 but the original MGS has always been with me in one way or another. My introduction to Metal Gear was Egoraptor's Metal Gear Awesome, a flash series that poked fun at the game and specifically spoke on bizarre things the player would have to do during gameplay that they often wouldn't have thought of in any other game. Because I watched Metal Gear Awesome so much, the bizarre tactics highlighted in the animation almost served as tips for me when actually playing. I had watched Metal Gear Awesome so many times that I already knew how to complete a lot of the game. It was just really cool to finally see it first hand instead of recreated through crude animation.

Anyway, I enjoyed the hell out of Metal Gear Solid. My favorite part of the Metal Gear series and Kojima games in general are that they often make the player a part of the game. It's almost as if you're a character in the game as well and gameplay wise, MGS 1 outshines the other MGS games in terms of that. The only parts of the game I legitimately disliked were the parts where you're forced into combat (not including boss battles) and one specific section with dogs. Overall, this game is a masterpiece and I think it holds up better than others give it credit for.
I beat this game in November of 2019.

I played through this game for the first time a few days ago, I had to catch up with the story, as I bought the Metal Gear HD Collection for Vita.
The first time you play this game, there is this like "aura" thing that only the good games have. You know you are playing a good game, and you wanna see more. The fact that you're pretty much thrown out in the game without knowing much about the commands is pretty exciting too, and you'll die several times in the first area, without frustration. Yet.
The first let's say two hours of the game are really cool. You're learning how to go with the horrible commands and it's actually pretty satisfying to be stealthy with such bad controls, the music is very nice, the scenario a priori classic but efficient so far... And then comes the first punch in the throat.
After two hours of great rythm, the game tells you to go through the whole map again to pick an item in one of the very first rooms. Utch, cringe. And a big one. But still, you do it, because hey, the game was really good so far and you wanna see what's next. Once you did that, it's all cool 'cause you can finally get back to the game and its story... Nope, just kidding Like an hour after the first trip, you gotta do it again, but this time, you explored even more of the map, so it takes even longer. And now, the is launched.
The terrible sequences, made worse by the bad commands, keep going and going. Fights in elevators, keep-runnin'-and-shootin' in stairs sequence, not even-fun-to-beat bosses, re-used sequences,... You thought you were in for an Infiltration game How cute, it's just a shooter bro. A shooter with bad camera angles, outdated commands and overall very, very tedious gameplay.
To try to keep it as short as possible, I would say that Metal Gear Solid is not a bad game, but is not the masterpiece some people would like it to be because of nostalgia and how stupid they were when they first played it back in the 90's. The scenario is great and so is the story behind all characters, and that's pretty much it. That's what keeps you going through all the tediousness of the rest of the game, 'cause boy is it tedious.
I couldn't bring myself to score this game a 6/10, 'cause they say it's a classic, and the story was pretty damn good, so I'll give it a 7/10, +1 because it's an old game.
You can try to go through Metal Gear Solid for two reasons one is nostalgia, second is to be able to understand everything that's going on in the sequels. But if you're just willing to play good old games because you like good old games, I would say there are way more games that deserves your attention. Everything that comes from the PS1 in 2013 feels not as good as it did in the 90's, in other words outdated.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Metal Gear Solid is a well-designed game. From the first area to the last, every area pushes you to develop strategies, and act with caution. Sometimes the story works out well, but sometimes it doesn't, and feels as if it is trying to force emotions from the player for characters not developed enough for me to care. The game sets up atmosphere and mood very well, but there are impediments that deter from my enjoyment of the game, like the PSG-1 fetch quest, which is, pretty much, compulsory, and feels like a waste of time. Also, if you skip cutscenes, the game feels very short. MGS is a good game, but I feel that it could have been better. Expand

I'm not going to go on and on, but do think this is a good average game and that's it. I think it was totally overrated for just way too long.

    The controls are lousy
The visuals are blurry and use texture warping which I'm not a fan of.
The foxhound members are a bit cartoony and over the top for my tastes.

Its still a good stealth game, even with its flaws.

The controls ruins the story at most points because it replaces the feeling of intensity with pure frustration and it destroys the game because of it, a prime example of this problem is the fight with liquid on top of Metal Gear Rex the cut-scene that lead to this conflict was to put it simply, intense and thrilling but the moment you fight liquid the game falls flat on its face and makes the player suffer from horrible controls and it kills the atmosphere.
overall MGS is only good for the story and the controls are a god awful mess that kills the overall game.
