After that game i just started laughing at the modern concept of Exclusive games. Being ported on many platforms, it still PS1 exclusive anyway.
My advice: if you don't have PS1 with CRT TV, don't play in PC port, because they cut many features. Just download the emulator and find a good gamepad. Not necessary, but if you get a good CRT monitor (any Trinitron for example), it will be great

Metal Gear Solid, released in 1998, stands as a true pioneer in the realm of video game storytelling. With its gripping narrative and innovative approach, it set a new standard for the medium, elevating video games to an art form capable of delivering immersive and emotionally engaging experiences.

From the very beginning, Metal Gear Solid captivates players with its complex and thought-provoking storyline. As Solid Snake, a legendary soldier, players embark on a mission filled with political intrigue, shadowy organizations, and moral dilemmas. The game tackles themes of war, loyalty, genetic manipulation, and the nature of humanity, exploring deep philosophical questions that resonate even outside the gaming world.

One of the standout aspects of Metal Gear Solid is its masterful blend of cinematic presentation and interactive gameplay. The game seamlessly transitions between intense, action-packed gameplay segments and meticulously crafted cutscenes, reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster. These extended cutscenes, featuring detailed character animations and expertly delivered voice acting, immerse players in the story, providing an emotional depth rarely seen in games of that era.

Metal Gear Solid's characters are as iconic as the game itself. Solid Snake, the enigmatic and battle-hardened protagonist, showcases a depth of character rarely seen in video games at the time. The supporting cast, including the eccentric Otacon, the ruthless Revolver Ocelot, and the enigmatic Sniper Wolf, are equally compelling and add layers of complexity to the narrative.

The game's narrative is expertly woven into the gameplay, with each mission and encounter advancing the story and revealing new plot twists. It encourages players to think strategically, utilize stealth tactics, and engage in memorable boss battles that not only test their skills but also contribute to the overall narrative.

Metal Gear Solid pushed the boundaries of the PlayStation console's capabilities, utilizing advanced visuals and technical achievements to enhance the storytelling experience. The detailed environments, realistic character models, and impressive lighting effects all served to create a world that felt alive and believable.

Nearly two decades later, Metal Gear Solid's impact on video game storytelling can still be felt. It set a new standard for narrative depth, character development, and cinematic presentation. It inspired countless games to follow in its footsteps, raising the bar for interactive storytelling and cementing its place as one of the most influential titles in gaming history.

In conclusion, Metal Gear Solid (1998) is an absolute triumph in the realm of narrative and storytelling. Its engaging storyline, memorable characters, cinematic presentation, and technical achievements pushed the boundaries of what was possible in video games at the time. It remains a testament to the transformative power of storytelling in gaming and is a must-play for anyone seeking an unforgettable and immersive gaming experience.

CODEC conversations are somewhat of a problem too, as Snake tends to be talking to himself in the middle of a highly gaurded room without the slightest thought in the gaurds head of "Why is there a man in a sneaking suit, that looks just like the guy I'm supposed to kill, knelling in the middle of the floor like I can't see him?... It looks amazing (even though it has PlayStation graphics) because of every layout and background is crafted so beautifully. The music really fits the scene and the score was well done. The gameplay immerses you so deeply that it goes beyond the TV screen and involves you, the player. It tells you to find hints on the CD case, the Psycho Mantis boss can read your memory card for other games by Konami or tell you if you have saved in a while, or the way to beat Psycho Mantis, or when you get tortured; you and your thumbs actually feel like they are getting tortured. This immersion can only be found in this title, and not even with games today. The game has so many "little things" that really make it stand out. For example, if you hide in a box in a truck, you will get driven to the place on the box. No one told you that would happen and that is the beauty of it when you discover it. The bosses are numerous, challenging, and truly a fun experience. Metal Gear Solid is just plain ground-breaking and the reviews show it. As of this date, there are no user reviews under a "9" on Metacritic and only one yellow critic score. I would like to think that the one yellow review was a mistake and was supposed to be intended for a different game because then I would have to question it's sanity. There are only two problems that made this title not quite get a perfect "10." First, aiming most the weapons were a pain and I do not understand why I could not shoot in first-person mode. I wish that the entire game was a first-person-shooter after you beat it once. That would definitely make me have to play it again! The second issue was the many moments when a long cutscene appeared and I was just watching and waiting. I would skip them if it were another game, but the story is hard enough to follow, as is, due to the number of plot twists. The game consists of a total of a little over three hours of cutscenes, by the way! I finished normal mode in twenty hours, so 15% of my game was pure cinematic video! To be fair, the cutscenes were well done, but the thing is I didn't buy a movie. Overall, a very involving game that will go down in history for its originality and beauty with very few flaws. Expand

When it comes to storytelling in video games few games are as revolutionary as Metal Gear Solid was. It set the bar for cinematic presentation, characterization, and voice acting. It's production values were top-notch and even today the sheer scope of it's story is more massive than just about every other game out there.

It's brimming with a personality that is so very Japanese. It's a serious and complex affair. One that isn't afraid to through in some self-aware humor here and there, as well as that perverted sense of Japanese sexuality in the form of things like camera angles lingering on female character's bums. It's a very unique vision. One fully brought to life and a joy to experience, even if it the amount of things it does makes it a bit confusing at times.

There's a lot of backstory at play here. Not all which makes sense. Not only that, but the characterization is incredibly deep. Just about every aspect of who these characters are is explored. The constant barrage of information can be overwhelming, but the payoff is one of the best, most fleshed out and likable casts in all of gaming.

As you continue to progress through the game the story only gets bigger. New elements and threat are always being brought into play, and big twists and shocking reveals are around every corner. It's absolute thrill ride to behold, but the result is a very chatty game. In order to fit all of the storytelling and character moments in, the game had to be made with a lot of cutscenes. Most of which can be very lengthy. It's a massive story to keep up with and it really rewards you for doing so. You genuinely will want to keep up with every little plot thread, but darn are these cutscenes long. There were moments where I drifted out. Yet, I'm glad and amazed that a story this big exists in gaming. It's a treat to behold and I can't wait to see where it goes in the later installments.

The gameplay side of things hasn't aged as well as the storytelling has. While the only are that really shows it's age in that department are the graphics, the gameplay has to deal with dated controls and such. It's all still perfectly tolerable though. There are some frustrating moments still brought on by this age though. There were some bosses and scenarios that, while excellent in design, can be down right anger inducing thanks to some aged mechanics. One personal bit of advice I recommend is that you save often. The checkpoint system itself is fantastic, allowing you to pick up right at the segment you died at the vast majority of the time. Something even modern games suffer with. That being said, MGS slips in a surprise and unexpected cheap torture sequence that could kill you outright and stick you a game over that costs you hours of progress. It also has a choice that affects which ending you get, so watch out.

Yet, despite these issues MGS is still a source of excellent gameplay. The stealth is on point. Even having to backtrack through levels, an always tedious prospect,is made a little bit sweeter with the promise of a new item waiting for you that opens up new possibilities. The boss battles are excellent, varied in design, and are characters often just as fleshed out as the protagonists. Their personalities and unique requirements for defeating them lead to memorable encounters.

Even today MGS delivered some of the most memorable, exciting, and amazing gameplay scenarios I've ever experienced. The focus may be on stealth, but MGS contains some very energetic action sequences. It also serves as a reminder of a time when video games weren't afraid to acknowledge the fact that they were games. There are moments of fourth wall breaking that tie directly into the gameplay experience that are absolutely incredible. Even with it's flaws MGS provides a gameplay experience that's just as well done and enjoyable as it's story. It does things with gameplay that you just don't see anymore.

After playing through Metal Gear Solid for the first time, I can't tell if gaming just hasn't come as far as I originally believed or if MGS was/is just THAT far ahead of it's time. I honestly believe it's the latter. It does things that even today developers struggle with. MGS is nothing less than a work of true visionary talent. One that delivers an masterful experience in both storytelling and gameplay. Age may have taken a slight toll on things, but MGS is only slightly less the masterpiece it was when it first released.

Its plot is riddled with philosophical and moral issues that resonate with gamers strongly in modern society, its stealth game play is intense and balances risk and reward, the challenge of surviving the odds is high but fair to players who put in effort and patience and the production values are well worth the price you pay. The soundtrack is hauntingly memorable, changing when the situation intensifies or during major cutscenes. The voice actors are very convincing, giving extra life to the characters they portray, with special mention for David Hayter's world-weary take on the veteran soldier and protagonist Solid Snake. The game offers, in addition to the short but emotional campaign, a variety of Virtual Reality bonus missions and training, as well as unlockables and secrets for playing the campaign in certain ways. If there is anything to complain about, it could be that the game's graphics haven't aged as gracefully as they deserve, and thus look dated and basic by present standards. However, to mark a game as unplayable for older graphics is a travesty. This game was the inspiration for many current conventions in its genre, and it still holds up over a decade later. Whether you're a veteran fan with an original PlayStation copy or a new Metal Gear Solid fan who's purchased the game off of the PlayStation Network, this is a game that you should be proud to own. The gameplay mechanics defined the stealth/action genre and indeed the MGS series are still the best stealth games out there. The story is ridiculous, with so many plot twists and turns, and Kojima doesn't care one bit. You can sit for ten minutes listening to a new met enemy rambling on and on about philosophy, politics and everything else, and it's worse when Snake is cooporating with them which leads to many awkward conversations. Dialog is what Kojima couldn't handle right, and that's a shame because that was actualy the only real gripe I have had with the game, but I guess that it's part of the magic that this series has. The bosses are fantastic, the mood is great. The game forces you to think about your next move and be on your toes. You constantly have to stay alert and learn to use your gadget arsenal wisely. I also loved the characters, as childish and silly some of them might be, because their personalities are interesting and unique. The codec conversations can be really good and it's especially nice that you can contact characters and get advice or perspective from them. I can safely say that every gamer should experience this game. It might seem dated but it really holds up after all this time, for some strange reason, and is stil perfectly playable. It's humorous, difficult, and fun.But most importantly , It's a fascinating creation that Hideo and his team managed to make. The game is very unique and has many small nuances that really make it an unforgettable experience. Expand

My all-time favorite game on the PlayStation One is Metal Gear Solid and I have finished it countless of times. It is a shame that most games these days can’t compete to how well Metal Gear Solid was, from its very good voice acting, excellent stealth mechanics, interesting soundtracks, to its beautifully written deep story. Metal Gear Solid is a very unique title for PS1.
The story and its development is totally incredible.
It's the first game that dialog is that relevant in a video game, the voice acting is stunning.
The only flaw for this game is the graphics quality, even when this is a PS1, the graphics could have been better.

The Back button is for Codec, and the Start button is to pause. Firing your pistol is finicky, because there is no laser sight or first person mode. (Twin Snakes has it, but we're not reviewing that.) Now on to the story, before I delve into the story of this game, I will quickly recap the story of Metal Gear, and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. In MG1, Solid Snake is sent by Big Boss to investigate the military base, Outer Heaven, which has been known to be creating illegal Metal Gear's, Solid Snake destroys the Metal Gear, and is confronted by Big Boss, who reveals that he is the leader of Outer Heaven. Solid Snake kills Big Boss, and escapes Outer Heaven as it explodes to bits. In MG2, Solid Snake is sent to Zanzibar Land because of reports of a new Outer Heaven, As Solid Snake investigates the new Outer Heaven, he discovers that, Gray Fox, Snakes friend in MG1, has defected to Outer Heaven. After a fierce battle against Fox, Snake finally kills him. Snake then destroys the new Metal Gear, and finds Big Boss, who wasn't as dead as we thought. Snake once again kills Big Boss, and escapes Outer Heaven. Okay, now to the story of MGS. The terrorist group called FOXHOUND, lead by Liquid Snake, Solid Snake's genetic brother, has taken over the nuclear waste facility of Shadow Moses, and is threatening to Nuke the U.S, unless the U.S send the burnt remains of Big Boss. Solid Snake is called in to infiltrate Shadow Moses, save the two hostages, Kenneth Baker and Donald Anderson. The campaign is very fun and intense to play through, full of twists and 4th-wall breaks. The graphics in MGS1 are a vast improvement over the graphics in MG1 and MG2, now in full 3D color. This game has a lot of thing to do once you've beaten the campaign and got both endings. There is tons of fun VR missions that test your skill, and even an extra disc containing a Demo for Silent Hill! This game is worth every penny of it's purchase, and you should get this great game ASAP. i'm just praying that the upcoming film adaption of this game doesn't suck. i know that Kojima is involved with the screenplay, and that's good, but you just never know. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played MGS for the first time in 1999 and I'm still playing it. There are claims that it's the greatest game released on the original Playstation, but I disagree. It's certainly one of the best, but I can always find a reason why Tomb Raider or SOTN is better, but MGS is better in much deeper ways. Sometimes you've got to shoot an enemy shoulder in the back with a rocket launcher. You can't really sneak up on enemies in Tomb Raider and the bosses in SOTN are defeated by the same tactic of hit them more often than they hit you.

The first thing you notice in this game is the top down view that follows you for the majority of the game. The camera takes a little getting used to, and is a bit better than the set camera angles from the Resident Evil games on the PSX but not as good as it's contemporary Syphon Filter. The camera angle suits the game you play. It changes, and you can scope out your surroundings so you can plan your attack effectively once you've got this down.

What makes this game good is that there are multiple strategies of playing this game. You can choose the easy route of blasting the hell out of every enemy in sight and run through into the next area, or you can choose to dispatch enemies in a quick and quiet fashion without alerting anyone to your presence. The choice is really up to you and the game isn't any different at the end, yet playing stealth over violence is more satisfying and rewarding.

The detailed story far surpasses any other games that I've played on PSX, but the game is still flawed. The big flaw comes in the shape of Liquid Snake. This is a man you shoot down in a helicopter, you blow up in a bipedal tank, you throw off of said tank and succumbs to a heart attack all in the same night. He reminds me of Will Ferrel's character in the Austin Powers movies.

We can talk about odd parts of the game, like Psycho Mantis reading your mind, or the whole dumb Decoy Octopus character, but there are twists, backstabbing and people that just won't die. Maybe MGS 3 is the best game in the series, but this game stands alone on the PSX.

The first time I played this game was just recently in the wait for the new Metal Gear Solid V. So I'll start with what I think is bad about the game.

I found this game really tedious at first, where the controls felt weird and the stealth mechanics in the game was challenging more because of how weird the controls were. The most annoying thing about the game is actually the sound when you get detected, since it's a lot higher then the game itself. I think I got at least 10 heart attacks while playing the game, and I couldn't find the settings to lower it or turn it off either. The combat in the game is also really annoying, where I found that it wasn't worth going fighting the enemy if I got detected, I rather died and tried again. Some of the boss battles also was more annoying then fun, like the boss where you had to use the sniper. It was just annoying, because the controls was so weird and slow. Most of the negative stuff is because the game is old and hasn't aged very well.

What I loved about this game was basically everything else. The voice acting is really good, and the animations as well. It's a very intriguing story that makes you want to keep on playing, even though game play wise, it might not be the best. It actually felt like I was part of a movie because of the good cut-scenes. Some might say that the cut-scenes are to long, but in my opinion they are perfectly long. Story-wise this game is absolutely fantastic, with a lot of stuff that will surprise you and make you gasp, with cool character and REALLY interesting enemies.

In the end, despite it being a bit archaic, you can't go wrong playing this game,if just for how often it actively blows your mind. It's something very few games can boast, and it's what elevates Metal Gear Solid above the likes of Half Life or Ocarina of time.

Just like Half-Life, Metal Gear solid has the beautiful balance of story and action in it but also like Half-Life it introduced something to gaming, Half-Life introduced Scripted moments and MGS introduced the subject of choice in video games. The idea of killing them or sneaking past them. Unlike other games of those era MGS graphics kinda bring it down a little bit, because the game is relied on character interactions and dialog and it can sure enjoy the benefit of being remade. I was a young teen when i played this and it shocked me so much. The plot, the characters, the gameplay... are just unique and amazing.

I would have given it a 7.5. Great game and definately one of the best of time. That being said it was NOT the best of time and calling it so simply isn't right. It was a really cool game that gave us something that we never experianced before but since then it has been overrated by all the top reviewers. It's like they want to make it greater than it was and EGM has especially I would have given it a 7.5. One of the most imaginative and original games of its era only let down slightly by the longer than necessary cut-scenes. Nowadays you’d be better off buying the Twin Snakes remake on the Gamecube but this easily ranks amongst the greatest PSone title and is arguably still the best in the series.

Varied stealth campaign with many fresh ideas, even compared to new games. Next to the campaign there's also small stealth puzzles where all other aspects than the stealth encounter have been removed. Unlockables provide some appeal for extra playthroughs. The story is pretty interesting and sets up characters for the next games. However, most of it is retold in MGS 2 if you're willing toVaried stealth campaign with many fresh ideas, even compared to new games. It is literally full of those 'classic' moments that are all too rare these days. Whether it's the first time your footprints are discovered, the first time you perform a stealth kill, finding out the identity of the 'Ninja', solving the method of defeating Psycho Mantis, obtaining the camera and seeking out your first 'ghost'... there are so many classic memories.
  3. This game is full of surprises and you never know what is going to happen, and that is a very good thing.
