This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Some people commenting here are very jaded. I recently tried to re-play this game, and over 15 years later, it was to a certain extent tedious, but considering how many great RPG's have come out and how far game development has come in that amount of time, it's really no surprise. However, to those saying the story was horrible, perhaps you play alot of shooters with extremely linear and copy pasted stories. I am HUGE on story development, and must say in today's era of gaming, that aspect is truly lacking. The story of FF7 was one of the deepest and most immersing I have experienced. It was intricately written and placed, each main character had their own background fleshed out (which is alot more than most games can say these days), how they all came together, some purposely, some seemingly random. The characters played off each other very well, to the point that you feel as if you're part of it while they convey their emotions into you. When Aeris dies, you almost feel yourself die a little inside. When you learn of Cloud's mysterious past, you find that most of what he believes is not necessarily true, and that he lived vicariously through Zack n Sephiroth. His tortured, twisted, demented mind shows exactly why he is a man of few words, and little emotion. The many twists throughout the story, I found at the time to be quite unexpected and enthralling. Each little FMV sequence and dialogue tying this illustrious narrative together. Not to mention the sand-box aspect of the game, where there are so many side-quests, that involve more than just stupid fetch quests (the side quests of today's RPG's), that sometimes also add to the story, or tie up a loose end, were imaginative and great. The arcade! Awesome! In today's RPG's fetch quests are all of the sidequests. That and crafting items, lame... If you can honestly say you dislike this game, or think it's overrated, you are missing a part of your soul. Or you enjoy the horrible re-hash of Oblivion that is every RPG coming out these days, which every single one is lacking in story, but it's ok, you can mash the A button all day and feel satisfied. I'll enjoy what yesteryear has to offer, while you drone the simple minded, lackluster stories, un-artistic, button mashing crap of today's generation. You are probably the same people that hated the new Duke Nukem, because it didn't have really-real-realistic graphics and it wasn't MW3. It's people like you that killed awesome epic gaming, in exchange for marketing research that makes every game these days a remake of last year's game of the year... Bring on some more epic Turn-based RPG's, screw these brainless idiots! Expand

Solid game when it first came out. Materia system was good on paper but in reality it was very limited by forced links and dev design, and at the end of the day, because the game offers no real challenge till the end, you were leveling most of that materia just because you could. Playing 19 years later can get frustrating.

FF VII it changed the RPG genre. It provides deep and satisfying gameplay. Soundtrack is pretty neat and memorable. But FF VII story is a bit unfocused and confusing. Example: Group of terrorist(AVALANCE) thinks that the best way to earn equal rights to the people is to destroy city's powerplants. But if you are a RPG fan this game will stun you.

The history are really a mess, and it's too much riped from FFVI, the characters are ok, my favority is Cid (the best cid on FF), I like others like: Barret,Tifa and Yuffe
It's a good game overall, have there moments, the history is good and the graphics are ok... It's a difficult game (if you have don't have pacient to grind) have o lot of sidequest (breeding chocobos are really boring), but I really don't undertend why it's so acclaimed, I think it is... a little... empty...

I don't really know of a time throughout the game when Cloud wasn't angst or Barret wasn't 100% morally good but an arse at the same time. Gotta admit the story's fun but as always the critic in me, whilst playing, drifted towards optional things after all what's the point in having side orders if they don't look appealing. The result: I wanted more side quests! They were amazing and hooked me in big time. The main plot to the game starts off well but if you're like me and you're playing the PS4 edition however you've played the PSOne version in the past then you'll take notice of the lack of "insert disc blah" which actually works against the game. You see something big happens after the first disc which leads to a bit of chill out time at the beginning of the second disc which is appreciated however you don't get that feeling when it just continues. You don't get that brake, even for a few seconds, which adds so much thought into what happened and what's going to happen. I know you can stop after that point but if it just continues then you want to keep playing. The PS4 does add some cool features such as R3 which now speeds up the in game speed. When you sit through a slow 10 minute animation of several characters getting off of a train again and again it kind of gets tiring so this feature is much appreciated. We also get what I like to call the "why bloody hell would you want to press this button in any way whatsoever even if you were held at gunpoint that's a bad idea" button. Or R3 and L3 pressed together which turns off random encounters. Why is this a bad idea? No encounters=no points (xp)= screwed when fighting a boss. You also get a button that counters this by just healing you. All in all I enjoyed this game but not as much as FF X. Not the game's fault it's just that I grew up with X.
Big question: would I recommend this game to someone who hasn't played an RPG before or the current strand of RPG games.
Answer: No. FF VII is very much a veterans RPG. Don't know how RPG mechanics work? Welp then you're screwed. However if you've played FF games in the past then I do recommend this one! I'd probably say get your hands on FF X HD first to get used to the way these games work as the others sort of throw you in with no help. Unfortunately the line between traditional RPG and action RPG has been blurred since this game so those who are used to playing current RPG will definitely need some adjustment periods in order to get through this one however I enjoyed the crap out of it :D

Kefka. Hilarious clown jerk type like the joker but insanely evil and power hungry. He pretty much ruins the world. Mean while Sepiroth is just a emo kid who burned a town down.

Terra is a mysterious person with a very interesting past that's slowly relieved to the player in a awesome way. Turns out she's actually way more awesome than you initially suspect. At first you think she's just a basket case but you soon learn she's godlike..

Cloud is a emo kid wanna-b-tough guy with mental problems.

Sorry weeboos but you know I got a point lol.

No game is perfect so I give part 3/6 a 9 out of 10. Part 7 is still a good game though so I give that a high 8 out of 10.

First things first, while I don't believe it is a masterpiece I still think it a great JRPG title and a must-play for fans of the genre.

The story felt mind-blowing at times and had an interesting villain with a great design but at times also felt too sentimental and far-fetched. Overall still great though. The open-ending could have been better but it was a good conclusion but left a few questions unanswered.
The characters are quite likable and interesting and the main party feels very diverse. Sometimes I felt like the characters could have been explored more though side-quests and dialogue but they still had solid personalities. I also enjoyed that some of the characters were pretty comical.
The turn-based combat was also enjoyable and it still felt flesh although a bunch of enemy designs and skills felt really random and out of place. That's one of my main complaints and what holds the score down the most.

The bottom line is: if you're a JRPG fan you should definitely play this one at least once. The story has a solid length and there are tons of side quests and stuff to do. The experience and the characters will stick with you although the writing could have been better in some occasions and the enemy designs and skills could have been more serious.

Final Fantasy VII is truly a timeless game. Even after 20 years, it's still regarded as one of, if not THE greatest RPG of all time. Even after 20 years, it's still regarded as one of, if not THE greatest RPG of all time. While I definitely don't agree with that statement, I can't argue against the massive impact that this game has had on the industry. I do think that the game has quite a few flaws, and some really big ones at that, but as a whole, it's a really great time. As much as I love the characters, story, and music, the highlight of FFVII is easily the Materia system. It's simply a ton of fun to experiment with different materia combinations, just to see what happens. Like, do you want to turn your enemies into frogs with every hit? Just throw an Added Effect + Transform on your weapon and there you go! Or would you rather inflict instant death upon every hit? Well, an Added Effect + Destruct will get the job done. I seriously cannot emphasize how much customization you have over your characters with materia. It makes the game worth playing just by itself. Now, as much as I absolutely love the majority of FFVII, there are some serious problems that the game has. My biggest issue with the game is how the story is presented. Now, don't get me wrong, the story of FFVII is great. Genuinely one of the best in the series. My issue is how they decide to tell it. At multiple points in the game, everything just screeches to a halt, and a plot-dump of information is told all at once. Not only that, but they decide to tell it in a somewhat unorthodox, kinda vague way. I get what they're trying to do, they're trying to tell the story in a way that makes you think "Wow, that was such an interesting way they did that!" But they do such a poor job of explaining things, that you're more than likely left confused at what happened. I appreciate the effort of them trying to explain the story in a different way, but I think they could've handled it better. However, once you do understand the story, it truly is great. I personally think FFVI has the best story in the series, but this one comes close. In short, I really love this game. There are some aspects about it that I realllllly dislike, but the good very much outweighs the bad. If you've never played FFVII, I really do recommend it, it's a game that I think everyone should try at least once. It's amazing at best, and inoffensive at worst. Expand

With every floor, new secrets are revealed, and that sense of mystery is incredible. For me though, my interest took a dip after leaving Midgar; it just felt like the characters had less personal connection to the story, and the places they wandered through. At around the 65% mark (around after the characters meet Sephiroth in the mansion in Nibelheim), my interest plummeted, and I really didn't enjoy myself much. It just really felt like the story had widened itself out too much, and that the characters weren't at all personally connected to it. Since it's initial release in the 90s, Final Fantasy 7 has been revered as this "amazing game that you have to play". And for the most part, that does hold true.

The overall plot, and executions were great. Great tension building when revealing the villain. The combat had nice progression, alongside some fun weapons and magic. The map and scenery was beautiful. The music helped give a great atmosphere to the locations, and are just some great songs in general. The character designs were also great, and the characters were enjoyable.

The combat was really slow due to animations. Area themes would be interrupted by the battle theme in some areas. The graphics were quite ugly, and did not age well. Most areas felt incredibly time consuming and annoying to complete. The random encounter rate felt like you’d be getting a random encounter every 10 seconds. The characters felt really flat as well. The ending was also quite lackluster.

Overall, I really did enjoy the game, I really did. The graphics are ugly, the characters didn't hit me like I thought they would, the animations in the combat were incredibly annoying, the random encounters and some areas were an absolute pain in the ass, and the ending was incredibly disappointing. But... I did still like the game though, really. Great story, great music, great locations, great and memorable character designs, nice magic system, and great overall feel and theme of the game. If you do want to get into the JRPG genre, and want to experience a great story and music as well, or if you're just interested in playing it because of Final Fantasy Remake, do play it because it is still a great game. However, do be warned as it's definitely not the phenomenal JRPG you've been told it is.

Overall Score: 8/10, didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to because the characters didn't hit me all that hard. Emotional scenes also didn't hit me that hard as well.

As an extra side note, I really wanted to give a more in-depth review but I sadly couldn't because I'd be getting a 404 because of **** **** engine but it's fine. :///////

the graphics are EXTREMELY dated but the battle system is handled really well plus the story is decent so i guess its worth a buy on the PSN or an actual copy.

Dated and overrated. Final Fantasy VII gets a 7/10. It's not a bad game and it's not a bad story, but there are obvious flaws about this game. If you just look at a lot of the positive scores, they're without any sort of merit. I cannot in a modern era of gaming, recommend the original game or any of its ports.

Points against: Lack of engaging challenges, aside from two optional bosses

If you just look at a lot of the positive scores, they're without any sort of merit. I cannot in a modern era of gaming, recommend the original game or any of its ports.

    Points against:
Lack of engaging challenges, aside from two optional bosses and the Arena.
Long boring stretches where nothing occurs in the game.
Several characters are given little to do or provide to the overall story. If Barret, Red XIII or Cait Sith were cut from the game, would the overall narrative be affected?
Aside from limit breaks, characters are mostly interchangeable for combat.
Loss of major character is severely overplayed by the fan community. The narrative buildup and expectation of this event is not shocking or surprising.
Most minigames and sidequests are not interesting. Chocobo breeding is a slow painful process.
Weak villain: Never from a gameplay standpoint did Sephiroth ever feel like a legitimate threat. While the narrative does provide some moments to display of the villain's threat, he never feels like a threat when the time comes to finally defeat him.

    Upsides:
Entire Midgar section has steady challenge growth, utilizes all characters effectively in the narrative, and gives each character a role in terms of combat capabilities.
There is a lot of variety and options as far as distractions go. The Arena is by far the best inclusion in the game, as it tests a players capability while also providing handicaps. Completing the Arena challenge offers useful rewards.
Some visuals are still haunting and some story elements are absolutely perfect. The Midgarsormr on the pike is a perfect way to elevate Sephiroth and is an awesome display of visual terror. Flashbacks and critical moments, even for characters that aren't that great (Red XIII) are handled beautifully.
Reno and Rude are by far the best NPC duo included in a game series. From the dialogue between the two and the engagements that they find themselves in opposite of the main party, the Turks definitely deserve praise for standing out from the other side characters.

    Overrated. Not bad, just overrated.
The entire first disc is a boring crawl and the AWFUL graphics are seriously distractive. I’ve never before experienced a big budget title where the graphics almost destroy the experience. The overworld character models lack detail and the colours are at times a pain for your eyes.

A dark and enthralling story and intriguing characters are marred by over-bright Lego-like models with bowling pin arms and frequently disappearing facial expressions that pop scathingly out of dingy pre-rendered backgrounds; it all cheapens the presentation into farcical puppet theater. Sluggish performance and gargantuan load times reduce the battles to frustratingly unresponsive slideshows; even the menus exhibited noticeable delays. Weird graphical issues such as the landscape wobbling and warping as the camera moves, characters shimmering as they animate, and textures and triangles randomly popping in and out shatter the immersion; FMV sequences reminded us of mid-80's ray-tracing demo reels in their primitiveness. The whole colour range seems limited to dismal greys, browns, and the occasional blue or yellow. To top it all off, the entire screen is covered by an ugly, noticeable, dithered mesh that had us wiping our televisions until we realized what it was.

All this leads us back to the sinking sensation we've had for a while now: that for all the "wow" factor, this new 3D generation of home video game consoles isn't quite ready for prime time yet. Even last year's Super Mario 64 on Nintendo's 64-bit powerhouse, for all its technical impressiveness, felt like an unfinished product in many respects with its blurry, repetitive textures, seams, and sharp pointy edges; as much as we wanted to like it we kept pining for a bigger and better sprite-based Mario.

And that's why we feel so disappointed with VII; there are so many good ideas in here that are wasted on technology that's not quite there yet. Square know how to make an enthralling epic fantasy RPG; the narrative techniques and core gameplay of 'Fantasy' keep on evolving and improving. The new cyberpunk-style near-future setting and the new hero Cloud's devil-may-care attitude are all welcome departures for the series; Square somehow manage to blaze new territory while still masterfully merging the familiar fantasy elements. The musical score is, as always, outstanding. And yet the whole experience is ruined by a mushy, clunky, glitchy presentation that just feels unprofessional.

So in short, we feel that VI - even with the narrative glue falling apart a tad in its second half - is still the superior Final Fantasy experience with its polish and smooth responsiveness, but this one will certainly leave its mark in gaming history. And not all hope is lost. Technology has always evolved in fits and starts; no doubt in a decade or so 3D hardware and software developers alike will have worked out the kinks and VII will get the epic cinematic sequel - or remake perhaps? - that it deserves. Until then, here's hoping the current crop of consoles is just a phase.

The graphical prowess of the game might not shock as it did back in 1997, but almost every other aspect of the game still surprises even today.
The vibrant world of Gaia, brimming with life and personality thanks to the insanely detailed prerendered backgrounds, the charming and creative locations, the multitude of wacky minigames (that are apparently superficial but actually give personality and character to each location, help make more memorable each story segment and offer an endearing change of pace between battles) and lastly the amazing soundtrack, which spans from lo-fi, to classical and rock, but always mantaining a strong sense of musical identity throughout.
The grandiose sense of adventure conveyed by the story, exploring the world continent after continent unlocking different means of traversal as the journey progresses, with the world map slowly opening up to the player, offering new optional areas, rewarding the more curious and attentive players with a staggering amount of hidden treasures, side-quests and secrets, both in terms of gameplay and narrative. Final Fantasy VII offers one of the richest, deepest and most creative fictional worlds that were ever conceived, including books and movies. The world of Gaia is extremely rich with lore, both told explicitly, implied or left to the players' imagination, slowly piecing it together as the group of heroes travels through it. The real protagonists of FFVII isn't Cloud Strife or his companions, but the world itself. Its people, its stories and the fate it is heading towards, a fate that our protagonist are trying to change. But alas, as much as the world, characters and lore of the game are exceptional, the same can't be said for the plot itself, which is basically a very long chase.
Where the game REALLY shines, is the Combat System. Firstly, as always the ATB is not a gamechanger, but definitely adds a pleasant layer of adrenaline and tension where turn-based games usually don't have it.
Secondly, and most importantly: the Materia System. A mechanic that is incredibly easy to pick up, but just as incredibly deep and rich of potential. The sheer amount of different Materias, which vary immensely in purpose and utility depending on the situation, and the insane amount of secret sinergies that can be found by experimenting with their disposition, leads to what can simply be called the greatest equipment system in any turn-based videogame ever, and this is not an overstatement. As someone who has played pretty much all the major turn-base RPGs, no other equipment system ever offered the same amount of creative liberty and power to the players who are proactive and curious enough to test it and be smart with it. It just hasn't been topped yet.
And yet, as much as so far it would seem that this is almost the perfect videogame, it is far from it, due to some small issues and two major ones.
Narratively speaking, as we said the plot itself is maybe a little too linear, and a couple of plotholes and inconsistencies that the story inevitably creates in order to lead characters to certain situations.
Gameplay speaking, the Materia system allows every character to use every type of spell and ability, which as I said leads to an insane amount of strategic freedom, but the absence of true meaningful unique characteristics to differentiate each party member like older titles makes all party members virtually the same (Limit breaks aren't nearly enough). Secondly, the sometimes (pretty often really) awkward controls of the minigames. The major problems hit really hard, and are inevitably tied together: the enemy encounter rate and the difficulty. Enemy encounters happen waaay to often, especially in the overworld, which not only makes the experience a slog to get through at times but eventually leads to the second problem, the difficulty. With an equipment system as interesting and genious as the Materia system, it is a real shame that the game isn't capable of providing an experience that is challenging enough to test the player's skills with it. Placing your Materia quite randomly gets you to the end of the game without any real problem, and ONLY the post-game bosses offer a real satisfying and meaningful challenge, sadly.
Or, in other words: Final Fantasy VII it's so theoretically perfect, both in story and gameplay, that its one true main flaw is being so stupidly easy that it fails at showcasing just how brilliant its combat mechanics are, instead offering "just" a phenomenal story, characters and world to explore, with tons of wasted potential in Combat and an annoyingly high enemy encounter rate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My review will be honest based on my life epxerience. The first time i saw the FF7 game was in 90's gaming magazines such as gamepro and playstation magazine here in greece.I found it weird you were controlling the character with that cursor and i said to my 11 years old self back then ''this game must be boring why you dont control your character directly? What are these battle choises?'' i had no idea what an rpg was. I was begging my parents for 2 years since 1995, till 1997 to get me a ps1. 1st grade of highschool started in 1997 for me.I was 12 back then.My grades were 20/20. And i said to parents i deserve to get a ps1. December 1997 i got the ps1. So happy. I had my eyes and thought in that game FF7. It was intriguing to me.I was reading good reviews in magazines.I was sceptical. Summer 1998 my father got me 3 games.Air Combat(so happy!), Tekken 2 (yess!) and..FF7.When i saw FF7 i was ''meh''. I put it ps1 last. And when i put it i saw the intro, heard the theme and i realised this game has nice pace, rythim, graphics, music, art style. And i was...MESMERISED! What i was seeing in begining of FF7 got instantly imprinted in my brain. My friends were excited. But deep down i knew i could not beat this game.I knew of its grinding, hard issues, time demands. I ought pstips. It had a guide of FF7 bad written. I got stuck in that snake after midgar. That giant snake. I didnt know what to do.How to get chocobos and being attacked 24/7 by enemies was pain in the ass.Game was making me feel CLUELESS.I had no idea about the gusashi green to get the chokobo.Among all of my friends only 1 friend managed to beat the game. And he was using game shark with infinite health and gills.Years passed by...in my soul i was loving and hating ff7.When i sw it got re-released in ps4 with cheats faster, infinite limit break, deactivating being attacked by enemies randomly. Those 3 cheats made the game better.I said to my self after 25 years ill beat the game even if i have to use cheats.Took me 25 hours. These are the problems i found.
-chocobos ruin the game.how to get them.reward doesnt exist there.too much grinding.waste of time
    -walking is so slow.
-you have to find that item in that forest and you have to excavate.I saw the solution on youtube and still took me MANY tries.
-you had to fly over that white mountain in order to progress in game.again i checked the solution online.Game leaves you CLUELESS
-i didnt know i had to kill that giant enemy in order to progress. They are 5-6 of them forgot their names.
-i had to check youtube to find the key item UNDERWATER using the sub.
-how to solve the unsolvable puzzle of ipening the safe in nibelheim? it has 1 summon, reds ability and vincent character
-how to solve without CLUES the code in space with that bahamut? i solved those by watching again..YOUTUBE.
-that giant snake which kills you no matter how good you are. i took my revenge killing it in ps4 using games cheats

And these are the problems of ff7.Everything else is nice.Epic tthemes of nobuo ,nice gameplay in battle.Nice story.Memorable art style and characters,I realised ff7 had open world elements.I realised hojo was the real villain and not sephiroth. For ps1 it was what was gta games of ps2 and call of duty games of xbox360. I realised the game sold well due to its quality, open world first games, and all the good above mentioned elements. But a lot of people never managed to beat it.I bet vast majority of gamers were like me.At some point they got stuck and they abandoned the game despite feeling DESIRE to finish it.But we cannot guess what to do when the game doesnt give you even a CLUE.

And im sceptical about what score to give.In ps4 its a 10/10 game. But in ps1...you lack those 3 cheat abilities which make the game better. so ..ps1 is 7/10.

And since this review is about ps1 the score is 7/10.But know this. In ps4 its a 10/10 so i highly suggest you to play the game in ps4 using those cheats.Released by square by themselves. They also realised the issues of ff7 and released it with those cheats.

    7/10 ps1
    10/10 ps4.

This has to be the most overrated RPG ever, and it has many reasons for it, back in the day rpgs where not that famous among the masses, and this game, appeared on the new sony machine, giving amazing graphics for its day, convinced many people to switch to sony instead of nintendo too. This is the first RPG several thousands of players played for the first time, and well it was good! But for those many of us who knew square magic since the days of the nes it was ok at best. Now i compare and see i love way more the visuals on the snes, those little characters with big expressive eyes, somehow managed to provoque a better emotional reaction from me, than the blocky shaped ones from the 3D games.

If you haven´t played you dont miss much, but if you're a rpg fan play it, is not bad, but is not even among the best final fantasies. Which in my opinion are ff4, 5, 6 and 9.

A bit overhyped? I'm sure I was, but then I played it and while I enjoyed it, I couldn't understand why it had such a dedicated group of fans. you have to give credit when they deserve it, Sepiroth may just be the most memorable character in FF history, and possibly in Video Game history, dude's just BA.

The storyline is average at best. You have an evil scientist experiment with human and alien DNA, off the rail Soldier who goe mad after learning about the experiments he underwent and a giant meteor about to hit the planet. Which part of that storyline is terribly imaginative I ask you? The only thing that particularly strikes me as interesting is the story of Jenova. Graphics. Need I go on? Even the graphics on the earlier N64 games are better than that. I will admit that graphics aren't everything in a good game, but they do help and if they are too poor then the overall enjoyment of the game is lowered. The only game I lthroroughly enjoyed in the FF7 series would have to be Crisis Core, but I won't go into that because that shoudl be saved for a different thread =] Overall, I do not believe that people should hold this game on a pedestal as they currently do as it is simply not worth the effort. However, I would recommend at least playing part of it; borrow it off a friend maybe? It's a bit like marmite this game, you either love it or you hate it so it's best to try it out before you make an opinion on it. Expand

Only a few characters did I actually like, those being Red XIII, Cid, Cloud before he became all emo and whiny in Advent Children, and Cait Sith. Yes, I actually like Cait Sith. Please don't kill me. But other than those three, the other characters are lifeless, emotionless, and are pretty much there to fill their cliche. And despite the lame main characters, I also think that the main villain, Sephiroth, is also one of the weakest in the franchise. His motivations are honestly very stupid, and his final form was very lame. The music is... okay, I guess. Only Crazy Motorcycle really stood out to me in the game's massive soundtrack, but other than that, I either dismissed the rest of them or just did not like them (ONE WINGED ANGEL IS OVERRATED). And the story is a pretty flawed one, which I'm sad to say, because this is STILL one of the better storylines in the Final Fantasy series!

So, as a final say, this game really suffers from cliched characters, really gaping plot holes, a dismissible soundtrack, and

Combat is predictable and incredibly easy, with very little need strategy or the need to understand the enemies and their skills. Materia system is cool, but poorly implemented. They level up too slowly and make the characters feel indistinct in battle.

The story has good moments, but really just stops in the end of Part 1 and never recovers. The necessity for one "Deus Ex Machina" solution after another in later game could be an indication that the plot changed a lot during development to appease executives and this resulted in the tonal disparity that is omnipresent in FF7's story telling.

The thing that bothers me the most about FF7, even more than the Chocobo Farming, is the fact that it feels like an incredibly small step forward from FF6. The systems and the game flow feel so similar that it's kind of disappointing.

All the new things introduced by FF7 are related to cut-scenes and graphics. The core game behind all the bells and whistles is 16-bit through and through.

For me, Final Fantasy 7 has been an underwhelming experience.

FFVII is one of those games that has an almost Sanctified reputation. Released in 1997 it was to JRPGs what Enter The Dragon was to kung fu films, taking what was a very niche interest beloved by the knowledgeable few, and turning it into THE must play gaming genre for the next few years.

The problem is, like Enter The Dragon (within its own genre), FFVII isn't really that good... It just came along at the right time and struck a chord with the 'masses', and became this legend within its own time.

It's not an inherently bad game, it's just not as good as previous games in the FF franchise and other JRPGs released subsequently also highlighted its many flaws. But because it was the first game to achieve real market penetration, it gets all the plaudits.

What's good about the game.... Well, it's certainly cinematic, using the CD-ROM format to its best advantage with decent Full Motion Video (FMV) to set up (and then pay off) the more rousing, and of course the more saddening, moments as the narrative progresses. I also like the inclusion of mini-games and the potential to effectively 'unlock' bonus weapons/armour/materia etc. (although the same things were done a hell of a lot better in FFIX!!)

Things which aren't so brilliant.... It might be down to a poor translation, but the story makes no real sense, especially towards the end when the twists are revealed and the loose ends are (supposedly) tied up. The graphics, whilst certainly impressive and diverse, haven't aged well at all. The subsequent FF games on the PS1 look so much better. And in terms of the music, it's a very mixed bag. Some music in the game is considered to be very iconic, whilst other pieces are unbelievably boring.

And what's bad......? Well, a top drawer RPG (of any kind, let alone a JRPG) is defined by its characters, the narrative, and (ultimately) by how the characters develop and grow as the story progresses. FFVII has some of the blandest and least interesting characters ever which, coupled with the nonsensical story, never draw you in. Add to that the 'Materia' system (which allows any character to equip every type of magic/skill/summon, regardless) and there's no real individuality. You tend to choose a specific group and, beyond the parts of the game which demand someone else is in the team, stick with them.
Different characters don't open up the narrative, in fact it's unbelievably linear, you never feel like there is a World out there that is existing beyond the small area of the game you're currently in.
Go back to a village at the end of the game, one you visited near the beginning, and everyone just says the same thing and are seemingly oblivious to the goings on.
It's just lazy, and disappointingly so!

Overall, this is a game that 'modern' gamers would probably look back on and wonder what all the fuss was about. For someone like me who was 21 when the game was released, I look back on it and remember being impressed by the 'leap' into the 32-bit gaming world.... But having finished the game twice, by the middle of 1998, I didn't play the game again until 2014... And having finished it a third time, suspect I won't be dusting off the CD's again for perhaps another 16 years!

God I was so hyped for this, and the first few hours of the game that take place in the cyberpunk city TOTALLY live up to the hype. After that it is awful.

First, it is so beautiful, each shop, each house, each room is hand drawn and unique, which makes the world feel so real, this is a special accomplishment [no assets used]. The city feels real. The grind feels well paced and fun.

After you leave, you instantly feel that tugging in your heart that you should stop; seriously even with a guide and the speed and deathproof boosts that the Nintendo Switch version offers (which I forced myself not to use for 16 hours], even with that it feels like a lifeless hollow grind with no point. This game falls off a cliff taller than the one in Death Note. I do not joke. So many of the reccomendations from people are people who played it back in the day and use the annoying, time wasting, dumb grind as a way to wind down because they don't bother to deep breath or meditate so they can play a real game like Bloodborne or Dragon Quest IV on the DS.

I seriously warn you that overall the game is **** and, if you can get it very cheep on sale, if you truly love jrpgs, I highly encourage you to get it just for the first few hours, because at first it really is actually as good as they say!

The graphics were actually terrible even in their time. The Playstation was in no way a weak system, ever. But this game seemed to mistake the system for an N64 with cutscene capability, and was designed as such. Even for the Nintendo 64, a consumer would balk at the graphic design student quality textures, with terrible shading and singular drab colours. Note that the PS1 was a 128-bit system, and the N64 was a 64-bit system, and the two had wildly different graphics capabilities. Square Enix did not seem to take that into account when making this. Everything looks unpolished and deformed, with even the titles of that year all exceeding it in graphical quality by a significant degree.

The music also suffers, being below even MIDI quality at points. Even entries of the series on the same system grossly surpassed it. Hell, even Final Fantasy VI, which was on the SNES, a 16-bit cartridge system, had higher audio fidelity at points. I can only surmise Square Enix did not have a very easy time understand the system specifications or what a CD-ROM could hold.

The characters are bland, seeming like either cliches or characters from a dime store novel. Here's what you have: Brooding Character 1 w/ past regrets and obligatory big sword, Innocent young flower girl, Angry black man with machine gun arm, Brooding Character 2 with a gun, Obligatory airship engineer, Mutant dog, Cat with Megaphone, Obligatory ninja, Love interest, and last but assuredly least: Generic psychopath with obligatory big sword, watered down Oedipus Complex, Messiah Complex, and the personality of styrofoam. These are terrible even for a low budget game.

The story is nothing special, although it decides to condone eco-terrorism and make the main villian need a patsy in order to have any definite power. It basically is this: Bad company poisons the world, Captain Planet and his crew come to save the day, then main character crossdresses, and then more Captain Planeting until the story basically whittles down to two almighty balls, fetch quests spanning many hours, meaningless exposition on an already cringeworthy cast, and bad Freudian element implementation. And then apotheosis, followed by battling inside a person's brain against someone you just killed. Then sequels.

Gameplay isn't anything to write home about. Dumbed down to an insulting point, the game handholds you through poorly designed linear plot areas, makes the magic system a brainless chore, throws constant minigames at you that serve no purpose, and ultimately just wastes your time. Three discs of pain, and nothing more.

This game, most notably, has some of the most obscenely terrible quality control, as there was a debug enemy in a plot-relevant point of the game in the NTSC-J region.

I only wish there could be -1.

Story,Characters,Twists, Blah Blah Blah. It's good for a game to have a decent story once in a while, but the gameplay still has to be good for it to be a good game.

Compared to Final Fantasy VI (or Final Fantasy III in the U.S.) this game is a downgrade. The story is inferior, the music is inferior, and the gameplay is not as good as Final Fantasy VI. Why I gave 0 for this review: because I hate the story that Aerith must be dead. Maybe Aerith may become alive in FF VII REMAKE. Square Enix already altered the story...

I will give score 7 if Aerith were alive in the original FF VII, really. This is a good game, but not the best.

I like remake way more. Remake made this game actually feel alive and mean something. This one feels extremely outdated and not interesting, sure it's the same story, but in this one it's just not fun to play it. Remake made it fun. In remake combat is amazing, characters actually feel real etc. Would i have liked it in 1997? Well no, because then i would have played it in 1997. Instead in 1997 i played true classics like resident evil (1996). But 2020 remake of FF7 actually made me interested in this series. Expand

Way worse than 2020 remake. In fact, remake improves in almost every aspect, characters, visuals, story, music, world feels more alive in remake, etc. 2020 did basically same that 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake did. Both remakes are better than originals. Sadly this old FF7 doesn't appeal to me at all, without this remake, i wouldn't even care about this story. Overrated piece of crap. Truly hot garbage that people only say is good because they haven't played another JRPG in their life.

Brought RPGs into the Western spotlight and contained the most debated plot twist of an era. [Feb 2003, p.97]
  2. You can play the game time and time again. Always finding something new, from a new piece of materia to a new place, to defeating the ultimate weapons. The story twists and turns all the time always keeping you guessing as to what will happen next.
  3. Without a doubt, FF7 is one of the top Final Fantasy games out there. It is also one of the best RPG adventures of all time.
