Thos is my favorite video game ever. It is an amazing RPG and the story and world building are amazing. The characters are well written with a great rpg combat system. Cloud may be my favorite video game character ever and the buster sword is definitely one of if not the best video game weapon out there, by desig. And everything.

The "Remake" did not even compare. It's a decent game, in it's own right, but was not able to recapture what makes the original game as incredible as it truly is.

** This Metacritic score is incorrect as it is missing numerous mainstream publication reviews from the time of it's release. In actuality, it's true Metacritic score is closer to a 97. [I added every mainstream critic review, for the PS1 version, listed on Wikipedia (I looked each one up individually to make sure they were accurate) and divided them by the number of reviews given.]

** The true user score is also very significantly higher than shown here, as there are a very high number of fake, hate reviews made by people (trolls) bashing the game because of it's popularity. Most of the hate reviews read as if the people who wrote them had never actually played the game. Almost all of them mention things about the game that are completely falso. Often times mentioning things that do not even exist in this game. And there are tons of these hate reviews on here. Literally, hundreds.

By far the best video game ever made! It's sick that this masterpiece was done in a year of development time, 25 years ago. Okay, let's mosy over and start with the most important thing in this game. Story 10/10: The best story everBy far the best video game ever made! It's sick that this masterpiece was done in a year of development time, 25 years ago. I played it first in 1997 and I love to see other people experiencing this masterpiece so I search for playthroughs and new player reviews all the time. Okay, let's mosy over and start with the most important thing in this game. Story 10/10: The best story ever written! It's just so awesome. Great plot twist all the way. Great buildups, great lore and world building. All characters have their moments and has different reactions to different important scenes in the game, depending on which party you choose. That's great for replay ability also. All the villans and plot points make sense too, and you fight no one just for being a bad dude. Those things that don't make sense is part of the story and gets explained later, it's genius and you go to a lot of places here where you never ever thought before the game started. Soundtrack 10/10: Best soundtrack of all time?Yeah, easily! There is no other games that has this many great songs in it and the songs are in all genres and both beautiful, foreboding and hopefull in the same time. Yeah, sure FF9 and FF6 has almost as good tracks and games like Donkey Kong Country 2 and Age of Wonders is also in the top but FF7 has a broader range of diffwrebce in tracks and still more consistent hits it perfectly. It got so many songs with hint and bits from several other songs in them. That's genius. All village themes are beautiful. The main theme is the best song ever. All the fighting music and boss tracks are awesome and the planet and character related music like city of the ancients, Cosmo Canyon and Cids theme is so beautiful. Graphics 10/10: The lego characters got so much life and emotions. They are charmy and funny. The backgrounds are just beautiful and they are art all through the game. Even 25 years later they look stunning. The battles are cinematic and the Summons so cool, but they should be able to skip in all ff games when you summoned them once. The cinematography in this game is just so much before it's time. It's ridiculous. They used great camera angels, cuts and pans in all the right places and the cutscenes where mind blowing for its time and still holds up today. Gameplay 9/10: This is the weekest part of the game and the one thing that hasn't aged like fine wine. It's still masterfully done but the controls is a little bad some times in the world and some of the minigames really sucks. It's clear why they did go for one or two big minigames per game in ff8-10 instead. But the ambition was there and it's still alot of fun. The fighting is great and the materia system is so flexible and you really crave new materia even though you can clear most of the things without them. The limit breaks are so awesome but the fights are a little slow now so x3 speed battles are useful in the new ports. This game got the best Characters in any game. Yeah Cait sith sucks but even him got some great moments. One last thing I want to say is about the humor in this game. It's so hilarious and funny some times. The honey bee inn. Taking Tifa's underwear in her room. The turks talking about wich of the girls they are in to. The date scene with barret. The scenes where Heidiger rages in Costa del Sol and Hojo is sun bathing and stuff like that is so great and they nailed it. It's also the best paced game of all time and after huge, heavy story bits you always get to something really light like go snowboarding or fly an airship. I **** love this video game! Expand

Way superior to the trashy title that today they call FF7 Remake.

The kind of classic game that shouldn't have been touched with prequels, sequels, spinoffs, and alternative cringe s%it, just to milk and ruin characters, stories and the world.

This game came out when my dad was in middle school, it's over a quarter of a century old and it's held up so absurdly well, there is no doubt in my mind some other 15 year old kid will pick a port of this game up in another 26 years and have the same reaction as me.

    Part one
is an amazing introduction and it's one hell of a Rollercoaster. I spent over 20 hours in part one and I'm planning on replaying it because I actually kinda miss it lol.

Part two is super immersive and made me incredibly anxious. This bit probably has the best story section of the game. The craziest twists I've ever seen are in this section. I felt like I was Cloud by this point and seeing him turn into a potato wrecked me I just wanted to play as cloud again. When I got the submarine I was overleveled by atleast ten levels or so but it's not like that mattered because I met emerald weapon just a minute later and was obliterated. I decided to breed a gold chocobo to get kotr just to fight it and still got obliterated. I now plan on slaying it at a later point

I give this game an 8.5. The above score says 8, but I really give it an 8.5. Why not a 10? Because even though this game is fun to play, it is not pefect, and by all means is not the greatest game ever made. The reason everyone says it is perfect is probably because it is the first FF game, or even the very first game they have ever played, so in their mind, it is the most revolutionary I give this game an 8.5. This is why FFVII is the most over-rated game of all time. I liked the game (yes, die-hard fans, I've played through the game for MORE than 60 minutes...It took me 66 hours to complete),and the story for the first half or so of the game was fantastic with the Shinra trying to take over the world's supply of Mako, but the story dragged down a little bit with the intro of Meteor and that massive monster that almost destroyed Midgar (I'm sorry, but I forgot the name. Was it Ultimate...something?). It wasn't bad, just not as awesome as how the game first started out. The characters were good, and the death of Aeria was drmatic, and Sehiroth as a villain is good...just not amazing. the storyline of Jenova was really interesting, and the flashbacks into Cloud's past were very compelling...Just too damn long. I don't care what you fanatics say. Cut scenes are great, but I want a game, not an interactive movie. Overall, I'd give it an 8.5, maybe even a 9, since the game is a fun, classical experience. It is NOT the greatest game ever made, but it's probably one of the best RPGs out there. Expand

First -- the graphics were absolutely spectacular for being the beginning of the Playstation Era. I remember, after playing Final Fantasy VIII and IX, thinking back at how much "worse" the VII graphics were. However, upon playing VII again I realized my error. The fact is, they did absolutely amazing things with the resources they had. Second, regarding the characters. Mike's comments lead me to wonder if he played through the entire game, specifically to Disk 3. They do indeed start by presenting the characters as the usual stereotypes. However, through the game you find out more about each character, including some major things that make them anything but your ordinary "wooden, teen-programmed protagonists." Third, you call Sephiroth an "angst-ridden villain who we must accept as evil simply because he acts like it, with little discernible motivation." There are places you would get lynched for saying this. First, Sephiroth is perhaps one of the most complex villains of all time, because he is truly likable. In addition, his actions are clearly being influenced by an outside source (Jenova), which has an unknown degree of control over him. In addition, his relationship and history with the main character leave room for major psychological examination. I have written college papers on the subject of Sephiroth, and so I think we can drop the mistaken notion you seem to have that he is stereotypical. In addition, the primary struggle in the story is not "ultimate good versus ultimate evil." When truly examined (assuming you've played through the entire game), you can see that the primary conflict is the psychological conflict that the main character has with himself. Even the final battle can be viewed entirely as an allegory for a struggle inside his mind. "Good and evil" are not the sides presented. The "good" characters are clearly flawed, even somewhat villainous in their own ways. The "evil" characters are clearly gifted and most are very likable, despite being on the opposite side of the conflict. There were indeed more groundbreaking projects, similar deep stories, and these games should have a better reputation. This does not, however, diminish the amazing gameplay, graphics (yes, graphics), story, characters, and structure of this game. It's more than a "good JRPG." It's a great, universal RPG that is one of the most timeless classics we have seen in the genre. Expand

I was completely surprised and intrigued when you find out Cloud may not be Cloud, though it felt slightly forced (Tifa should have said something way earlier). And FFVII is much more a game than modern RPGs. There's a lot you have to figure out on your own and some alternate directions the story can take in addition to sidequests. It's much more interactive. Also, I was surprised at how long the game actually took to finish and all the content and areas there were to explore. The monsters were....freaking random, but original. I loved the pre-final battle against giant Sephiroth where you had two parties to use. It made me a little disappointed when I got to the real final battle (talk about slow and tedious). But I really did fall in love with it when I played it. The character development is incredible and I loved the whole package despite a few complaints here and there. Expand

Sephiroth is an example of one of those game villains who just "don't" die. The earlier villain offering, Kefka, from Final Fantasy VI was manical, psychotic, and succeeded in scorching the earth. When he died, that was it, he died. Playing whack-a-mole with Sephiroth got boring. It's hard to tell he's even the villain. You start the game fighting Shinra corp. You might ask yourself whySephiroth is an example of one of those game villains who just "don't" die. Onto the parts I loved. I loved having a nice variety of characters to choose from. I loved the materia system, exploring the world and finding new bosses to kill. The Golden Saucer was awesome, lots of minigames and other things to do. More RPG developers need to learn players love having a mid-game hub to do other tasks rather than advancing the story. It's a shame square hasn't learned from their success though, as newer games in the series usually lack anything with 10% of the depth of the Golden Saucer.

Main villain was weak, but it's still a great RPG experience, a far gap between a 9 and 10 though.

To keep it simple. Plot = Hit and miss but one of the most involving and epic in the series. Gameplay = Reached the zenith of JRPGs. Graphics = Gouraud shading looks horrible nowadays but at the time was incredibly atmospheric. Music = Incredibly well done for a VG at the time. It doesn't really bother me nowadays but when you play it again the translations in the game are truly laughable.

It has the most complex story in the FF Franchise and a deep batte system offering you much variety with the materia system. The OST is very good, altough FF VIII and FF IX are better in this point. One of the best ff games.

The Story of FF VII is well known for a good reason. Its a complex and deep story sucking you in and never letting you out. Also the Materia System is really fun, because you have many and interesting combinations. Great game.

In short, the most defining RPG of the 32-bit era! It's existence spawned a slew of inferior spin off games and movies, but most importantly helped establish the genre and it's transition from 2D to 3D. Good Plot, hours worth of side quests, great music, rewarding, & addictive. Visuals are obviously dated, but remain charming and were amazing for it's time.

You just can't consider yourself a serious gamer if you haven't tried this game. Everything here is great: great story, great battle mechanics, great character development, great amount of items, great characters, great length... So, basically, you need to play this game at least once in your life.

I recently made a FF pilgrimage of sorts, playing through every game in the main series, so my impressions are still fresh in mind. Obviously, I cannot really talk about the graphics as being 15 years old, that's hardly going to be fair. But I do remember how awesome I thought they were as a kid. The battle system made me very nostalgic for the way JRPG's used to be. Simple but deep, and you can clear this game without having to resort to grinding out levels. The game features a wide variety of mini-games, most of which are a great amount of fun (I must have done that snowboarding game about 50 times before I moved on). The big question though is how does the story and characters hold up. I truly hated Advent Children, and honestly I have been pretty disappointed by the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII as a whole. After playing through the game , it was crystal clear why there is a Compilation: The story is one of the finest told in the series. Cloud isn't as emo as he has become, Sephiroth is still a menacing figure, Barrett is still a racist Mr. T. Ripoff, and Rufus Shinra is still the most interesting character. Overall, for all younger gamers I recommend picking this one up on the PSN. Don't miss out on one of the best games in the franchise! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy VII is truly a work of art, and I honestly mean that with my heart and soul. This game had dazzling graphics for the time of its release, revolutionized the gameplay of the genre, has an amazing soundtrack, and beautifully delivers its central themes.

FFVII is not like the previous entries in the series. Instead of a medieval or steampunk-like world, it takes to a world more centered around technology, but still retains fantastical elements. I feel some kind of introduction is in order: the planet in its core holds something called the Lifestream, which is magical energy drawn from the life on the planet. This energy can be harnessed as mako, and this mako is where materia and the magic materia grants its users come from. A human-like alien race known as the Cetra land on Gaia and settle with the native humans about 2000 years prior to the events of the game. Around this time a being known as Jenova arrives as well, and infects the Cetra with a terrible disease. The Cetra build massive robotic Weapons to kill Jenova, but Jenova is sealed away before they can use the Weapons. They are put into hibernation; by the time this has happened, there are only a few Cetra left in the world. The only other aspect of the story you need to know for right now is that a city known as Midgar has basically become the center of commerce on Gaia; however, Shinra, the corporation in charge of manufacturing the planet's mako and using reactors to power almost everything in Midgar, is the real entity that is ruling. Shinra is highly corrupt and is draining the mako from the Lifestream, which is killing the planet.

Trust me, I could go into MUCH more detail, but as far as background knowledge goes, those are the essentials. Now, at the risk of skimping out on indicative game elements, I'd like to go over something most people skip: the central plot themes. Yes, FFVII is greatly inspired by both real-life and mythology, particularly from the persecution of Jews and Judaism, but what I'm talking about are the literary themes, for lack of a better word. FFVII heavily revolves around nature versus technology, loss, and identity. The entire plot is a nature vs. technology scenario: AVALANCHE, a team that vows to stop Shinra from killing the planet (also where most of our main characters come from), is fighting Shinra itself. As the story progresses, it eventually becomes the world versus Jenova, and the ones who were fighting for the planet suddenly must go against it to save all mankind. There is also loss in this game. I think we all know about the tragic loss of one of the main characters early on in the game, which was actually inspired by the passing of the mother of the producer and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. This is definitely the most heartbreaking loss, seeing as you've spent hours and hours of game time grinding with and learning more about this character--before you know, you yourself have grown attached to this fictional character portrayed through polygons and text boxes, and you start to feel sad, maybe even hurt by the death of this character. Now, aside from loss, there is also identity. There are identity crises and regaining of identity EVERYWHERE in this game. Our primary main character doesn't even remember his memories correctly until almost two-thirds through the game! Identity is dotted throughout this adventure, and I think it is so masterfully woven into even the gameplay elements itself.

Now, you're probably asking by this point why I gave the game a 9 and not a 10 if it seems like I love it so much. Well, to tell the truth, I do think this is the best story I've ever heard and if I could give it a 9.5 I would, but this is not a book or a movie. It is a game, and as a game it is sincerely great, but it is not perfect. I personally think that any game where grinding is basically required is automatically not perfect. The gameplay is your typical RPG, and is still engaging to this day. What's also very engaging are the pre-rendered backgrounds; that is, you have to stare at them for a while to understand where to move. They did not age very well, but they do give the game a different feel, a different style than games before it, and that I applaud. The music is one of my favorite soundtracks in the series. I love it so much because it feels like it came from the SNES Final Fantasy games and was updated with the PlayStation sound chip. The battle themes make you pumped up and the town themes fit the mood of the locales and are comfortable in the background while talking to NPCs. I seriously recommend a listen if you have the time.

The Completionist is currently doing a multiple part review of this game and its various successors. He does more justice than I could ever hope to do in 5000 characters.

It's not the best game ever, but it is an amazing story. FFVII really is a work of art and I hope it will forever be recognized as one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy VII is one of those games that has many things I don't like, but it also has many things that are more than marvelous. This game has one the best villains ever created, best Final Fantasy villain ever, Sephiroth.

FF7 has many playable characters and everyone is well made. Some are more interesting than others, but Red XIII, Vincent Valentine and Tifa Lockheart are my absolute favorites. Then there is characters like Caith Sith, that I don't give a damn.
Main character Cloud is fairly good but I have never really understand that why he is so popular. He is pretty boring character when compared to many so good ones. Red and Vincent both have more interesting story than Cloud's. Even the romance with Cloud is not very catching. Cloud and Aeris sure make a great couple and with that fact, this game have one of the most shocking moments ever in Final Fantasy. Tifa and Cloud are not very interesting as a couple.
FF7 has very interesting story with all little side stories. There is surprises and I was really interesting about Sephiroth. It is little stupid with end on Disc 2.
With many other characters, FFVII is build well. Characters have stories and real background.

Gameplay might just be the best in whole series. I like FF8 and junction system, it gives a lot of variate and challenge, but FF7 has Materia system, that works better in bigger picture. Using MP is good idea and with large amount of different materias and combinations, with red, purple, grey and yellow materia, it all work and give you a lot of freedom, how to build your team.

World is large and there is a lot to do. Many things are fun and give you a lot of freedom. There many strong monsters, secret stories and mission and even few team-mates are optional. But there is also those bad things that do not work that well.
Chocobo raising (Golden Chocobo) becomes frustrating and man items in this game are missable, which is one of the biggest things I dislike. Then there is bad design, why there is final limit break, that is one of the weakest of them all max dmg 9999, once. These things just frustrate me.

But one thing I really dislike in this game, is the graphic. Graphic do not make game, but this graphic is one I despise. That is the one thing that makes FF8 that one bit better than FF7. Graphic is good in fighting, but why the overall character graphic have to be some **** LEGO block. It has some value, but in long run, I dislike it.

With all this, you might think that FFVII is bad game, but it is not. Final Fantasy VII is one of the best PS games ever and second best Final Fantasy game ever made. Game has a lot of weapons and materia, with Battlestyle and Materia system, that make battles really fun and give a lot to do.
Every character has own style with limits and weaponry. There is many team-mates and majority of them is more than just fine, they are great.
FFVII gives so much to do and it is fun to build characters with superb materia and defeat monsters that are really hard cases. With every rare materia and weapon to be found, this is huge game and well made one. There is bad things in this game, but overall, they can be put aside.

I think this game could have used better ending and more cutscenes, with overall better graphic, but well, that is why remake is coming.
Final Fantasy VII is great game and finale is one of the best in the series. Sephiroth is villain that becomes better than any other character in the game, every way.

    + Sephiroth
    + Well made playable characters
    + Stories
    + Gameplay with Materia system
    + So much to do

    - Block style graphic
    - Missable items
    - So many bad design ideas

If anything I would say FFVIIFinal Fantasy VII is not flawless but it is easily one of the most ambitious and compelling games I have ever played. The sheer scope and ambition puts even other quality RPGs to shame and there are very good reasons why it is still considered a masterpiece. There are certain aspects of the game that haven't aged well but that does not make the game overrated. If anything I would say FFVII is underrated because to this day there is no other Final Fantasy game that dared to attempt so much. It combines so many ideas and genres in a way that makes sense. The story is epic, complex, and well crafted yet very different from other RPGs that came before it. There are some plot holes and a few parts are convoluted but overall it is very well thought out and is far deeper than most game stories. The characters are iconic, well developed and compelling. The soundtrack remains in the conversation for the best of all time. The visuals have aged very poorly but the visual concepts themselves are still distinct and appealing. I can still remember the first posters when the game launched and there are so many moments throughout the game that are immediately recognizable. The gameplay itself may seem primitive now but at the time it attempted to mix many gameplay elements. I still can't think of any other RPGs that allow you to ride motorcycles, birds, airships and submarines all in one game. There is so much that the game does well that the areas that it falls short are easily overshadowed. I don't think it is perfect or the best game of all time but if they did the Remake right and fixed the few flaws it could be the best of all time.

Gameplay 8 - While the battle system starts off quite primitive, it layers new elements in a satisfying way and by late in the game there are actually a lot of ways to approach combat. Each character has many limit breaks that keep things interesting and while there aren't as many summonings as in FFVI they are far more cinematic. The thing that sets the gameplay apart from other games in the series is that there are so many gameplay elements outside of combat. There are stealth sections, puzzle sections, motor cycle chases and even submarine exploration. The game even has sim elements.

Story/Progression 10 - The story is the best part of FFVII. Even though it isn't perfect, I still think it is one of the best video game stories of all time because of how many great ideas it blends together and how it does things that I haven't seen in a game before or since. It has one of the most iconic openings in a game and from there it immediately drags you into a world that is bizarre and yet quickly understandable because of how well developed all the ideas are. It isn't like any other stories in the series but at the same time it still has a familiarity to it. It has so many themes that mix into the gameplay, world, magic system and lore. It has one of the best villains in fiction yet ultimately even Sephiroth is not the central problem within the story, he is just a conduit for bigger environmental and social problem. He is not a dark lord, he is a complex person dealing with his own problems that are understandable because of the complex circumstances of his life. I could discuss the story of FFVII all day and still have more to say about it. It does have moments that are convoluted but I can't think of many game stories that offer more.

World 8 - The world is vast, complex and full of variety. Every location offers something new and memorable. Unlike most RPGs that came before it, the locations are all unique and even the way you interact with them can be different. It can be a bit annoying to traverse sometime, the game does make you back track a lot and sometimes getting from place to place is not intuitive. The world building is great though, it feels like each location in the game serves a believable purpose. Some of the areas seem a little out of place and messy in terms of their design but that also adds a sense of realism to the game.

Characters 10 - There is a reason why FFVII has some of the most memorable characters in gaming history. Not only are the characters iconic looking they are also very well fleshed out. Sephiroth isn't just just a badass with a big sword, his story is incredibly complex and layered. His own journey is full of twists and turns even more so than the protagonists. He evolves and earns his place in the story rather than simply existing as the final obstacle like so many other game villains. Cloud is also far more than just an icon, his story is one of the most unique of any Final Fantasy hero. His very identity is at the heart of his character arc and the story is as much about him discovering himself as it is saving the world. Unlike most stories that have a pretty straight forward female lead/love interest, FFVII once again breaks convention. Aerith and Tifa are both very well developed and both are more than they initially seem.

The only thing that I disliked about the game is the unecessary minigames that affect the pacing, but other than that, there isn't anything else that I would have removed if I could. Finally, playing this game made me realize how good and faithful the Remake is, it's definitely a big improvement in terms of characters, gameplay and cutscenes, I hope they won't change it a bit too much, and follow the original story while fixing the minor flaws. A true gem. This was my first Final Fantasy and JRPG and was single-handedly responsible for opening the doors to countless others. A perfect example of gameplay trumping graphics for days hands down. It's hilarious that the very same company that developed it over 30 years ago can't produce or replicate anything like it today.

I was not really going to make a review for this game because the remake was recently released. This game deserves it's own review even if there is a lot to say in regards to the original. Can we please not bump up or down this game in that regard? ++ Story. To the fans only coming here because of the remake: One of the few FF titles that didn't need dimensions/timetravel and meta stuff which at the time was not uncommon in FF titles. That made FF VII stand out. Instead of fighting villains destroying reality, the story was firstly about trying to prevent people from destroying the energy of one planets life energy and then became a race on time to stop a man poisoned by alien DNA wanting to become powerful. The story has a great development in both the world and the characters. The struggle is real with ups and downs and the story was mostly down to earth for a Squaresoft fantasy title. On its own, it was a ragtag team becoming the only group to stop the world from being destroyed.
+ Characters mostly interesting, the stuff with Cloud can be confusing but it is also a major part of his development.
+ Combat was the latest installment off ATB combat and was with the materia system a new direction from the Job system both fresh and allowed customization not seen before.
+ The music was more alive than previous titles and it became some of the most iconic pieces in gaming history.

    - The story can be convoluted and it is not perfect because there are plotholes
    - Combat balance can be an issue and it is really easy if you just learn to use the broken combos/materia

All in all the game was and is a very good game. It has flaws, many in fact and I can understand why it is not the highest-rated FF game. It was often on the backside because while amazing at the time FF VI had more fans and FF X had more emotional impact for some. It is inevitable to compare FF titles because each FF is its own installment but this series was always crossreferenced.

All in all this game was a great game which meant a lot to me. Now to those that insist bringing the remake into the mix I can only say this. I gave that game an 8 (wanted to give it less because of fighting fate but I can still see the greatness in the game) and if I regard the lore introduced in that game I would have to lower the score for this game. Thank god we can have different opinions and do not bring in "real fan" etc. I have not any discussion on that and is not reviewing on that notion.

Once I actually bothered to learn the Materia system I enjoyed it much more. It was full n moving around peoples Materia and creating the best team I could. I think story wise it was great. Some confusing moments for sure, but it didn't bother me too much as I don't need to understand every detail personally. (I've played kingdom hearts games it doesn't get more confusing than that). One problem I had with the game was figuring out where to go. I liked the pre rendered backgrounds...but sometimes they made navigating where to go hard and confusing. There were multiple parts in the game where I needed a guide to know where/how to go. Maybe that's just me though. Random encounters made that process even more stressful. But that was really the only major flaw I could think of with the game. I think once I got the highwind I didn't have any problems with that actually. It made navigating the world faster, easier, and more fun. I actually came to love the graphics personally. Once I got highwind I explored the workd more, got all level 4 limit breaks and all ultimate weapons for cloud Tifa and cid, who were my 3 favorite characters. The blocky character designs and 3D backgrounds. At first glance some people may say they are ugly, but to me they had a unique charm that I've seen no other game have. The word was so fun and full of life, I think the soundtrack was the biggest part of this. The soundtrack of this game is one of the best I've ever heard honestly. Ahead on our way, the main theme, Aerith theme, tifas theme, and one winged angel were my favorites. I LOVED the game. I'd say it was incredible considering it's 23 years old! In conclusion, I would personally say it's definitely worth a playthrough in 2020. I played it without any mods, just how it was on the PlayStation 1 and t was so much fun! Enjoyed it from start to finish. Played it for 43 hours total and it was so worth it! Some people dismiss this game being considered great for nostalgic people...but I played it 23 years after it's release with no nostalgia and it was epic!!!!!!!!! Expand

But anyway, while FF6 was probably actually the game that kickstarted Final Fantasy's golden age, FF7 is the one that really propelled Final Fantasy's popularity in gaming. It was also a monumental game in showing the capability of games to be cinematic experiences. That alone would make this a respectable game in video game history, but FF7 is amazing in general.

The characters are exceptional in both their personality, and their designs - which are absolutely iconic. The story starts off fantastically, and then takes a turn into JRPG convolution and insanity. But it continues to have exceptional moments throughout and ends fantastically. The score might be the best Nobuo Uematsu has ever done, and thats saying a lot - because it propels this game to have perhaps the best OST in video games. The gameplay is pretty typical of JRPGs, which means its somewhat mediocre, but the materia system is pretty excellent.

Aside from Yuffie and Red, all the pther characters seem like clones of another one, like Barret and Cid, or just don't have a very likable personality, like Cloud (Which was fixed by the release of FFVII:AC, which helps make FFVII much more enjoyable). Hate me if you wish, but Cloud and Sephiroth are not the greatest ever. Cloud is rather lifeless and Sephiroth not only helps to overcomplicate the story (and not in the Chrono Cross good way), but he seems rather randon and tries too hard to be "badass". But, like I said, FFVII is a great game due mainly to it's sheer size. There are a ton of extra things to do, such as level 4 limits, chocobo breeding, and the WEAPONS. All these combined with the awesome materia skill system make up for most of the game's downpoints. Sure, it doesn't reach the "Chrono" level of RPGs set by Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, but neither does any other RPG, but FFVII is one of the best, though highly overrated, RPGs out there, and every RPG fan must play it. I must say, after playing through it recently, I think the polygonal models have aged horribly, at least out of battle. I realize the game is 12 years old, so I wasn't expecting Killzone 2 calibur graphics, but they're still almost painful to look at. I'm sure they were truly mind-blowing when the game first was released, but it's 2009 now. In battle, they're actually still impressive, in a way.The summons in particular are still awesome to look at. The pre-rendered backgrounds still hold up, as well. The story is somewhat confusing, but I found it entertaining and even moving at times. At times Sephiroth's motives were unclear to me. (Even more confusing was that it wasn't even Sephiroth...O.o) I also had trouble figuring out who exactly Cloud is, but for the sake of spoiler-avoidance, I won't go into detail. (Though I'm sure most of you have probably heard the story, anyway.) The gameplay holds up well. Lots of classic ATB battles are to be had, and it's fun tweaking your characters and making them into machines of destruction. One of my favorite things about Final Fantasy VII is the music. Nobuo Uematsu created a masterpiece with the game's soundtrack. Just look up some orchestrated versions of some of the songs, and I'll guarantee you'll be in awe. While I still think that Final Fantasy VII is overrated and has too many fanboys, I can't deny it's a great game.
