This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy VII is the jazz music of Final Fantasies; if you have to ask why it's a great game, you will never know. In order to appreciate the game, the person has to fall into a certain age range. The game represents a special time in the life of contemporaries.

It was the first RPG of its kind with a truly original story. It still jerks a tear thinking about Aeris' story when she and her mom escape the Shinra lab and her mom dies on the train, or when Red finds-out his dad who he thought abandoned him really sacrificed himself to save the tribe.

    Great memories with this game.

    A Genuine 10/10

Brilliant in every sense of the word, maybe the characters animations could have been perfected, but hey,its from the 90's, it can be forgiven. Guaranteed cinematic wonder.

Easily my most played and most favourite game of all time, played on release date and between then and now I have surely finished it 6 times or more. It is a near perfect RPG with an amazingly deep story (including various hidden scenes to explain the story even more) and some of the most famed protagonists (Cloud, Aerith, etc...) and antagonists (Sephiroth, Jenova, etc...) alike, an overworld with secrets to discover and last but not least an incredible battle/materia system to get to know.

The pacing is good, especially at the start of the game to get you into things, it slows down a bit after a few hours, but still goes strong, once the world opens up you are free to continue to your next story destination, do side quests or just battle away and level up...Completionist can easily sink 100+ hours into the game.

In short, whether this is your cup of tea or not, this game was a revolution back then and has a legacy for many many years to come...

This game being less acclaimed than FF9 is just plain wrong. This is an absolute RPG classic that any fan of the genre must play. The dialogue is sometimes a bit confusing due to a sub par translation job from the original japenese, and yes the characters blocky polygon build is a bit funky, but other than those two minor complaints the game is great in every aspect. The story is very good and you will have an attachment to some of the characters, the materia battle system is fantastic, allowing you to explore the entire world for hidden multi colored crystals that each have different magic abilities you can equip to any character and learn through experience points. Even more awesome you can link different materias together to give yourself a unique battle edge from character to character. There is tons of side quests to do that are very fun raising your own chocobos and breeding them to make better and faster ones to compete with and win prizes like weapons and rare materia) the search for the 3 ultimate weapon bosses that are very difficult and reward you with the most rare and best materia in the game, the flying saucers fun filled mini games, and more. The soundtrack is one of the best in a video game you will ever hear. Its arguable to put this as the best RPG game of all time, if not the best. Expand

You have to keep in mind that it was released in 1997.

Anyone knocking on the story while praising FFIX's is a joker. The fate of a central female character in FFVII reduced countless fans to TEARS. Graphics apart from mini-movies aren't that great, no, but if that's a huge deal for you, there's a lot of games you shouldn't be playing, like anything from the NES or SNES. I personally found the game play to be inviting enough that I played this for well over 100 hours just trying to complete side quests and such. Just make sure you know what you're going in for if you buy this, which is a time commitment and a sometimes difficult to follow storyline (I really didn't have much trouble with it, but other people seem to have). The direction the series has gone the last ten or so years is disappointing. I don't know how square enix doesn't understand what made these games so great. It was the exploration and open world feel with steady progression. There was nothing like finally getting the knights of the round summon after all those chocobo races and ripping through every enemy with that summon. I loved the materia system I wish they would do it again in another ff game. People that hate on this game only do it because they didn't play the game when it came it. It hasn't aged too well graphics wise but you can't compare it to today's graphics. It's not fair. You can't say Mario bros is a **** game because of the graphics or that golden eye is **** because of the controls. You have to have experienced the games you rate when they came out. Great story, great music, fantastic open world feel, there aren't many games that can compare to ff7. Most people that played it when it came out know that. Best jrpg ever. Expand

Not many, but it's what Final Fantasy VII was able to do with me. It's the first Final Fantasy game I touched, still remains my favorite one of the series, and certainly succeeded in making me in a lifelong fan of the series. To keep it short, I did consider it back then and still do the perfect game. One of the rare perfect 10s

Graphics: Of course by todays standards they are outdated, but I can guarantee you that back then they were cutting edge, and that the cutscenes had everyone orgasming. 10/10

Sounds: I'm not one to much care about sounds, but even to this day I easily recognize the music and themes of certain characters. If that doesn't speak volumes of the music, then I don't know what will. 10/10

Story: How many games are able to hook you in that you can't lay down your controller? 5-10% Well add this one to the list. I could list a fun anecdote for it, but I'll spare you and keep it short and just say that this game is/was pure addictive. Especially when a certain event happened towards the end of the first disc, and set me so full of rage that I wanted to enact my revenge asap. 10/10

Gameplay: Even to this day I absolute love turn based jrpgs, let alone that the materia system is still to this date one of the best leveling systems I've come across. Another and obvious 10/10

That's why I do go with a 10/10. Normally I would say there's no such thing as a perfect 10, but sometimes in you life you will meet up with something you could consider perfect, and for me one of those few things was Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy 7 hit the right spot at the right time. It made Final Fantasy popular in the west, created a legacy and a loyal fanbase as much as some haters. It is without a doubt a really great praiseworthy game even if it is not the best Final Fantasy (At least FF6 and Tactics are better for me) or best RPG of all time (Closer to it back then). It is without a doubt a really great praiseworthy game even if it is not the best Final Fantasy (At least FF6 and Tactics are better for me) or best RPG of all time (Closer to it back then). It was also the end of an age as Final Fantasy was a Nintendo exclusive series on NES and SNES but the N64 was still based on cartridges and Square did correctly assume that 3D was the future of gaming. Sony had its PlayStation ready that would become Nintendo's nightmare and it was well suited for Squares needs. The rest is gaming history. The game itself has the theme of an evil corporation Shinra Inc. destroying nature for profit and lying to the public on the front. Behind it there is a more serious thread as past events haunt the present and our characters are getting involved. It focused on the main character Cloud Strife a former Soldier of Shinra as he is recruited by his childhood girlfriend Tifa Lockheart for the resistance organization Avalanche. Avalanche want to save the world from Shinra and is framed by them as terrorist organization (They have actually a point here). This starts the events of the game. The story itself has a lot of twist. The characters backstories are all connected to Shinra at some point and everyone has solid reasons to participate in the events. There are even 2 hidden characters for you to find. It handles also serious themes as human vs nature or the price of progress, what actions are justified or abuse of power by organizations. I enjoyed the main story, side stories (especially Wutai) and individual backstories of the characters. Also there are tons of side activities like Chocobo racing (and breeding), tournament battles, snow boarding, a rail shooter and more. There are also 2 super bosses later on that will give you nightmares if you are unprepared. The magic system uses Materia which is condensed life force. It comes in different flavors. Green for magic like healing or elemental spells, pink for status increase, blue for supporting, yellow for special abilities and red ones for summons. There are useful combinations to use and test. The Materia gain also experience points and get better (stronger spells / effects). On the highest level a new Materia is created with the lowest experience level. In addition there are also some hidden items, learnable enemy skills (special Materia needed) and like said before 2 hidden characters. The battles are well designed and some are challenging. The Materia are well integrated into the game and you will enjoy the effects. The summons are epic especially the final Knights of the Round which devastates nearly all enemies in 1 use (hard to get as you must bread the best Chocobo available). The graphics were beautiful and awful at the same time. They had not get 3d character models right at this time. Look how it improved in FF8 and FF9. The battles and especially the CGI sequences however were breathtaking. ILM made the CGI if I remember correctly. The soundtrack however still holds up today. Special warning for the German version. The translation was bad and even Square noticed it and got a better translator for the next game (minor celebrity back then in the gaming community). Also has one of the saddest moments in gaming. I think I can give you a few tips here: Read a FAQ about missable content as there is critical good stuff affected. Having 7777 HP is devastating for your next enemy, always level up your Materia with equipment with double growth (triple exist but is rare), bread special Chocobos as there are non reachable locations (with excellent stuff), some learnable enemy skills are awesome and enjoy the game. Almost forgot that it has not only serious parts but also sometimes great humor. Overall this game is nostalgic as it was for many the first Final Fantasy they played. It deserved a place in gaming history as it created a legacy. Still worth playing gameplay wise but some parts have not aged well. I still have fond memories and replayed a few times. Expand

The Materia system makes the player curious, because you can combine them and that does the game even more exciting and fun!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy is without a doubt THE BEST GAME that i have ever played. Pair it up with Crisis Core (PSP) and Advent Children (animated movie), and you're in for the ride of your life. The story of each character is so perfectly described that you can only feel like you've known them for your entire life.
Fx (SPOILER!) Aeris' death scene surprised me! the fact that Square Soft had the balls to even attempt a move like that, chills me to the my bones.
You get so much enjoyment out of this game. There are countless possibilities. Choose your party, what materia, armour and weaponry they have. It's got amazingly entertaining stuff such as: The battling, Exploring of the map and of course the Chocobo Racing and breeding.
I was left with a little tear about to roll down my cheek, because i felt like i was saying goodbye to a part of myself, which i invested in these characters. And also because i wanted more.
This game woke more emotions in me than any other game, book, movie or TV-series ever managed.

The only thing that's left to say is:
Go play this game! and if you have already, go play it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There's not much to be said about this timeless masterpiece that hasn't already been said. FFVII takes all of the ingredients which were good in the SNES entries and brought them to the PS. There's nothing this game lacks and whether one finds the graphics outdated or to "have aged badly" is a matter of taste, not fact. From the inspiring materia system to the optional characters, from the open world with hidden secrets to an amusement park with dozens of minigames, from the epic plot with twists never seen before in video games... It is silly how much backstory a game can have when you need atleast 3 playthroughs to remember it all. When I bought the PSone classic port version of the game from PSN and played the game again I was delighted to notice that Aerith notes in the beginning of the game that "there's this materia" she has which is "useless", only to remember that it is the precise materia that will save the world later on in the game.

All the characters have well-developed motives and each are strengthened by a brilliant leitmotif ala Nobuo Uematsu. The optional bosses are fun to run with challenge runs and are in fact rather difficult if one doesn't pay attention to his/her character builds and materia use.

This is a game that never will be forgotten.

You basically cannot have high expectations on graphics, mainly because our modern consoles look like reality, i think we have achieved a peak in graphics nowadays, nothing can compare to these modern graphics.
However, the main role of a gamer is not complaining about graphics. That's easy indeed, our role is to contextualize a game for the period it was released. For example, i cannot give a 4 to the original super mario because of the graphics, that was the best they could do at the time, it doesn't matter if there is another, better-looking NES game, that was released 5 years later. Technology evolves continually and dramatically and even FFXIII graphics look very aged for a 2015 player (when it was released, about 5 years ago, it looked like a film). So we are in 1997. The environmental graphics are pre-rendered and let me say that(even today) they look beautiful. The character's graphichs, however, aren't that good. They barely resemble a person, but i honestly don't think this is important. Final Fantasy VII world is beautifully constructed, it has a lot of places, villages and cities, forests, caves, all very well designed and rendered. Villages look alive, tons of things to do, places to explore, who could ask for more?
Characters and story are probably the best part of FFVII. Characters are more complex than they appear on first sight. Even the apparently most stupid character in our party has his own dreams, likes, dislikes, loves and interests, and a story behind that defines and fits him/her perfectly.
Story is very good, full of plot-twists, complex but well explained and music...well, Nobuo Uematsu is a genius of soundtrack... what are you expecting from him?
Overall, this game is truly a masterpiece in every aspect. Great story, Great combat system, Great Music, Great graphics. Do yourself a favor and play it if you've never done it. You won't be disappointed!

Little did he know this game would prove to be my favorite and is the sole reason I love single player RPGs to this day.

This game has it all, massive customization, GREAT storyline(the best), huge plot twists, tons of hidden things only found when using an online source or the original Brady Game Guide. This is truly the only RPG game I've 100%ed and it's not because of it's simplicity, but because the storyline sucks you in and doesn't let you go.

When this games remake is released in 2017 I am seriously considering purchasing a PS4 just so I can play it. Playstation has paid for "temporary exclusive rights" so it will probably be on PS4 for a year or two until XBOX can have it, and I just can't wait that long.

If you haven't played this game yet, do it. You will not regret it whatsoever.

Sure, other PS1 games had better graphics... years later when the PS1 had been pushed to it's limit. But FF7 was the best of the best at the time it was made.

Ignore the hipsters who hate things just because the masses enjoy it. There is a reason FF7 is considered one of if not the greatest Final Fantasy games ever made. It pretty much single handedly created the US market for JRPGs.

And remember, just because a slightly emo main RPG character is cliche these days, this is the game they were all trying to copy. The original is never cliche, no matter how overused the concepts became afterwards.

FF7 was a generation defining game, like Pong. If you can get past the graphics these days (they are unbelievably crude by today's standards), this is a must play. If you can't get past the graphics, well then I can only assume you only care about shiny graphics and there's always Fast and Furious N+1 for you.

The second time I used "the book" to discover how much I missed...and I picked up Vincent. The second time through, using the manual, it was like a different game.

Perhaps it's the excellent soundtrack; one in which every single track sticks with you for a lifetime. There's nothing generic about any of the music, it's all just sublime nostalgia nearly 20 years later. OR maybe it's just the epic story line that brought us one of the most memorable, intriguing villains in video game history, and one of the most iconic heroes of the time. There's a lot of different aspects of this gamer that make it not only a 10/10, but my favorite game, above all else. My second favorite game of all time is Starcraft - I spend hundreds of hours in UMS games in Starcraft. But the overall quality and experience of FFVII was unreal at the time. In modern times it is rare that we get a game with so much heart and soul poured into it, one with a soundtrack that sticks with you for years and years and one that has a long, interesting story to go along with a unique gameplay experience. That simply doesn't happen much anymore, if at all. FFVII is much more than a mere video game. It's a work of art and a powerhouse ofa consoel seller. How many people do you know who bought a Playstation back in the day jsut to play FFVII? That's precisely how I ended up with mine. Before that, video games were casual fun for me. Ok so I wasn't born until 2002 but even someone like me thinks that the backgrounds look great and the cutscenes still hold up today but the character models look terrible now and I don't think they would of looked that great back in 1997. Battles: 9/10 Again like in gameplay is tactical and engaging but relatively slow. World 9/10: Ok so I'm not that far through but the midgar section was amazing but I think it decreased in quality slightly after you leave but back to this topic. The world is amazing in midgar and perfectly fits the setting but I didn't enjoy the exploration of the overworld as much as the midgar section (but I haven't been out for long and it might grow on me) Overall even with its problems I'd still give this game a 10/10 Expand

Best thing that ever happened in video games and will never happen again. Story, Gameplay, Music, Character Development, Graphics, everything is out of this world. Sometimes i wonder if the people that created this, if they understand the magnitude of what they did / influence they had, to the future generations of gaming and the Jrpg community. God Bless them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were some RPGs before this one, but no doubt after this game this style got a lot of attention from a variety of players. This game have a complex and interesting story, a charismatic villain and a not so bland main character.

The character development is very simple, we just basically level up, but the magic system is very fun. The planet in this game is a living entity and produces “materia”, which are solidified “life stream”, the stuff the planet gives life to any being. We equip materias in our weapon and armor, and they level up as we kill enemies. Our characters can use magic and special powers depending on which materias he has equipped. The battle system is turn based, as most classic RPGs are, and we find aleatory battles as we walk around.

In the beginning we start in Midgar, a big city full of technology, while in the rest of the world they seem to be between medieval times and pre-modern technology, as it’s common on Final Fantasy titles. This city, Midgar, is sucking the life force of the planet to power it’s machines.

In Midgar the technology is far advanced, they were able to create soldier clones to serve them, and they have super-human powers. Theses soldiers have no family, but they implant false memories in them, so they think they are like any normal person. You are one of those soldiers, fight as a rebel against the Midgar government, or Shinra enterprises, to save nature and the planet, as everything is dying around the city.

Soon you find your true enemy, another clone soldier called Sephiroth that had discovered his origin and rebels against Midgar, using his superior powers to kill a lot of people in the Shinra Headquarters, the main building and enterprise behind the mining of the life stream from the planet. His motives are revenge, and soon after he discovers a menace to the planet and will try to use it to his advantage, bringing humankind to the brink of extinction.

This is just the very beginning of the game, the story is profound and full of details. Everything is grand and ambitious about this game, it was a revolution at the time. I’m glad to see they are doing a remake, this game deserves, it was a masterpiece.

Back in the day there was no such an "anti-hype hype and ooh Final Fantasy VII is so overrated, VI is better, Kefka > Sephiroth, insert another pseudo-intellectual comment here". That is a internet thing from the last 15 years.

Final Fantasy VII does not have the most consistent writing. That is not why it is perfect. It is perfect because the image of the story and the characters is perfect, even if some passages are a bit sloppy. This game has heart. It does not matter how many people rant about the story because most of them, not even those that love it, understand it anyway because they either believe in fan theories or just do not understand certain passages, did not understand it because of the translation or just even with enough proper translation simply do not want to understand it in the way intended. But that still does not change that fact that the idea of the story is a touching one that games can only dream to have. And to be honest, even with some inconsistent or unnecessary writing, it still is written so much better than most. Does this game have its goofy moments? It has. That is why it is such a masterpiece. A solid story manages to be dead serious and funny. Look at how many fans Star Wars has. And many Final Fantasys, this one included, took inspiration from Star Wars (and other things).
Does the game have the best cast? I don't think so. I think it has some of the best characters but the best overall cast would go to another Final Fantasy. And those that are important are implemented in such a good way that they just peak above all others in the game. And that is fine because not every character in a game is supposed to have the same focus. Still the others are getting their own screentime enough to show they also play a role in this story and also have their own share of problems.
The score would bemore or less on par with Final Fantasy VI for me though I have to say most "normal tracks2 in VII are a lot better for me. But to more or less even that out VI has Terra's Theme, Forever Rachel, Aria Di Mezzo Caraterre, all Kefka stuff and a lot more. I would still give VII a slight edge.

So the graphics. Does nobody actually understand that FFVII is supposed to imitate the SNES FF Sprites? Yes, FFVIII looks a lot more "real" but that was when they did not want to use that style anymore. VIII came out around the time Parasite Eve was made so they went for that, just as FFVIII's artworks by Tetsuya Nomura looks like his Parasite Eve artwork in style. One can argue how good the cartoony, super-deformed stuff looks and that is fair but that is really only a matter of preference and when it comes to FFVII a part of its charme for so many people.

When it comes to me, Final Fantasy VII inspired and influenced me so greatly in my life that I could never thank the creators enough for what they made.

The story is engaging and deep, there are many story arcs that combine with each other, and the mystery goes till the end of the playthrough.
The game is known from one of the biggest plot twists in the history of the video games, and it's still valid in 2023 (of course if you avoided spoilers).
The mechanics are classic-JRPG, turn-based fights, which could be repetitive, especially with random encounters, but honestly, you don't have to grind, if you don't want to.

FF7 showed the western world that the story in the RPG can be written very well, immense and compelling. Also, let's not forget about brilliant soundtrack made by one and only Nubou Uematsu. One of the best soundtracks in video game history, up to this date. The game is packed with mini-games, I don't think there's so much diverse content in any other Final Fantasy game.

Final Fantasy VII for sure is one of the best RPG adventures of all time.
If you can stand dated graphics and some gameplay mechanics, such as platforming segments, it's perfect 10/10.

When the Final Fantasy VII story is viewed as a whole, it is one of my favorites of all time. The graphics were amazing for their day, but are older than a majority of the people writing reviews. If played on PC, there are various mods that help smooth the character models out tremendously. The music is still among the best ever composed for a game, my favorite being Jenova's theme. If you are not fond of the low quality music, there are mods to replace the music faithfully with high fidelity versions of the songs. The original PlayStation version actually had better quality music than what is available with most of the ports even today. When the remake is released, I hope for dual modes of combat, turn based slow combat for people like me to play games to relax, and active action combat for those who prefer that style. The political and philosophical parallels still apply today, maybe even more so. Like all great works of art, the metaphors and symbolism in the game could literally be studied for years and still not fully explore their meaning. Expand

Moments later, our hero, still unnamed, got off a train with the purpose of destroying a mako energy reactor, something that was being detrimental to the health of the planet. In this way we got into the skin of a former soldier who had become a kind of terrorist, but really was a mercenary who works for Avalancha, a formation that fought against the Shinra organization. The emotion of these first minutes would catch us instantly, but everything that was to come was going to hook us much more to the command of our console (or computer keyboard, although I prefer the PSX version). The fight to save the planet was going to lead us to discover a man named Sephirot, ex-soldier with a mysterious past, who was much more powerful than any enemy seen before, and who would not hesitate to destroy everything in his path in the face of dementia...

I have no doubt that the system of subjects, invocations, objects, limits is the best system ever created in an RPG. This also offers plenty of freedom of operation, as well as fun and tension in every fight that is impossible not to enjoy and praise. We managed a Cloud in the environment for which we advanced, we moved by the pre-rendered funds and in the moment in which we had to fight, the screen changed. We went from polygonal and anarchic characters -virtually speaking-, to a much more balanced and compensated in combat, where we did manage all the members of our team.

As we were discovering locations and advancing in the plot, we could move around the map with complete freedom, although this depended on the means of transport that we had. With the boogie we could cross small rivers, which was an advance compared to the race on foot; with the ship "Strong Wind" we could explore almost any location on the map... And I say almost, because we would have to use the chocobos (a kind of colored ostriches) to access the last corners of the planet, where we would be waiting for succulents rewards.

Final Fantasy VII at the time of its release, certain aspects were seen as revolutionary, a plot that focused on the development of the characters, a unique battle system and 3D graphics...

To finish with this brief summary about Final Fantasy VII, I am going to talk about the duration of the title, since the game can last 150 hours if we propose to complete all the challenges, for example kill the "Weapons" of the planet by which we move, which are huge enemies that will make things very difficult, get all the materials, the chocobos cited or learn all the parallel stories that lead to Sephirot, Shinra and Cloud. I also want to highlight the excellent soundtrack, orchestrated, with unique melodies, as well as some more special ones for romantic, sad, happy, relaxed or tension moments.

And I will not talk about the scenes, which is something that cannot explained by words and one should witness them with one's own eyes.

The greatest masterpiece ever delivered by the world of video games.

There are a small handful of games that no matter how many times I play them or how much time passes since I first played them, they still evoke the same reaction from me every time. These are the best games ever made and FF7 is one of them.

It's important to note that after 21 years of age this game can still stand up in terms of storytelling and gameplay even after time has rendered its graphics mostly archaic. 21 years. It's difficult for an entertainment product of any kind to have that level of longevity. Even movies struggle to not age badly after that sort of period of time but FF7 manages it.

The storyline ebbs and flows brilliantly, leading you from one set piece to another in a way that keeps you wanting to find out more even when you practically know the script by heart. The characters make you empathize with them and their missions and despite the odd bit of script now reading a little poorly (in part due to translation issues) you find yourself rooting for them the same way every time.

The gameplay system in this is my favorite amongst the FF series. It's not needlessly complex but rewards an experienced player for knowing its ins and outs. It's accessible but nuanced. You could play this game slapping any materia in any weapon or you can garner the knowledge to make set ups and annihilate everything you face. The amazing thing is that it never feels less satisfying to do every time. In my recent playthrough, racing through it all somewhat it still felt satisfying to unleash limit breaks and finally break over 1000hp per hit. It still felt rewarding to level up both yourself and your materia to new heights and attack bosses with ferocity. It takes a very special sort of game to be able to do that. I think part of it is what the game gives you, it gives you bit by calculated bit. You can jump the gun here and there if you know how but by and large its that waiting and the results of that waiting that become addictive.

Graphically, in its day, this was stunning. The mixture of FMV backgrounds with the game graphics on the front had been done before but it wasn't just the graphics but the brilliance of the design. Midgar still looks remarkable to this day. The Golden Saucer also. Towns felt alive. There was so much to see and to do in each of them they never just felt like places the designers could plonk down some shops and a save point.

I struggle to think of a more iconic game soundtrack than this one. There are so many themes from this that are a huge part of gaming history. The opening strains of the battle theme or even better the boss theme. The WEAPON theme, Aeris' theme. They have all stood the test of time fantastically well. The only thing I can consider comparable is the soundtrack to Super Mario 64. Between the two of them they're amongst the best loved and remembered scores to gaming ever.

The scale of the game back in the late 90's was unbelievable. A three disc game was pretty much unheard of back then and the game is an easy 20 to 30 hours even when you know every part of it by heart. There is a wealth of things to see and do and yeah modern RPGs may dwarf its content you only have to look at what else was around in 1997 to realize just how incredible of an accomplishment this game was from a technical standpoint, a gameplay stand point, a writing stand point, a musical stand point. It simply ticked every box.

I've played the vast bulk of the FF series and I never felt they got it this right again. FF8 made this look arcane graphically but the story was all over the place, the draw system was flawed, as was the GF and Limit Break set ups. They seemed to want to always re-invent the wheel which is my major gripe with it. Most of 7 was perfect and a few tweaks what was already there would have benefited the series immensely. Instead they kept chopping and changing and as such, though it's just persona opinion, they never reached this height again. Each game before or after this has had plot work that made me stop caring or characters that were just too zany. Whilst I know I'm talking about a game where a cat rides a gigantic stuffed toy in battle wielding a megaphone that always felt like the exception to the rule. The rest of it was fantasy but in its own vein believable and relatable and that is what made the story and it's characters so brilliant, so timeless.

Once every year or so I'll fire this up and it draws me in every single time. I'm sat here now 15 hours into a new play through when I have a backlog of vastly technologically advanced games to be playing but there is something to be said for the charm and I suppose above all the nostalgia that FF7 invokes in me. It's a brilliant game, yes, but it reminds me of my childhood and in turn reminds me just what a brilliant medium of entertainment video games can be at their finest.

And this is one of the very finest.

The thing is that I can't imagine how amazing would be if I played the whole thing not knowing anything about it, the characters, the story, the passing, the music, everything is an ambitious piece, the graphics are obviously from the PS1 era but they have aged so well, this game has everything, comedy, horror moments, kaiju, doublecrossing, philosophical stuff, really just everything. There are a few issues with the controls or in more than a few battles, because of the camera angles I couldn't heal or revive the right character, but just that. The story is so masterfully crafted that even when I think I knew everything (because of my friend and well... the internet) I was so invested and wanted to see how it will unfold next.

This game made me reconsider all the classics that I still haven't played and set a really high bar for all the others FF that I still have to play, a true masterpiece that everyone should play, so if you haven't played it before, just give yourself a favor and go right ahead.

Without a doubt. Sure, the visuals can be dated by today’s standard but back in 1997 these graphics blew us away and I played it upon release. The translation also has some issues, but the core story and characters still stand up as one of the best science fiction plots of all time. The combat, customization, and general world-building is some of the best even 23 years later. If you never played Final Fantasy VII and are wanting to see where the story goes, after you beat the first part in the remake, I highly suggest buying it wherever you can.

This is called living through the era when each generation wowed you, no matter what. This game was released only a year after the PS1 was released so obviously things would improve throughout the years. This happens with every generation of consoles. Developers figure out how to make games better looking every year....

Flawless game for its time. 10/10 and I cannot wait for the remake.
