Most gamers could find something to enjoy with the title, but those who aren’t big genre fans may feel like it’s a long grind towards a lacklustre ending.

Stranger of Sword City is a solid dungeon Japanese role-playing game devoid of any surprises.

A deep dungeon crawler that may fall too flat on its visuals and is flawed for being only in English.

Grab your sword, prepare to enjoy that character creation menu, and get ready to spend as much time in the hospital as in a 3D dungeon labyrinth.

Despite its slow start, Stranger in Sword City matures into a compelling dungeon crawling RPG that's defined by its gritty atmosphere.

A title aimed at a very specific audience that will find a challenge that throw hours thanks to turn-based combat system and its history.

Stranger of Sword City excels at one thing, and really flounders at the others. It’s a rewarding experience if you’re a fan of challenging RPGs and gameplay depth. If you’re a fan of well-written dialogue, engaging music or proper difficulty curves though…well….there are a lot of other video games out there that may suit you better.

Stranger of Sword City is a brutal and punishing crawler which hits hard and mercilessly every time the player makes a single mistake. It's gorgeous to look at and ultimately satisfying but still too much infuriating to be fun.

There’s something to be said for the continuing efforts to keep turn-based RPGs viable, and Stranger of Sword City in particular shows a commendable willingness to at least try fusing new ideas with still-viable concepts of old. However, without characters even worth caring about to drive it along, Stranger of Sword City is left leaning on its gameplay, which is comprised primarily of the most laborious, antiquated aspects of the genre.

A great dungeon crawler. Solid battle mechanics with quick auto battles, cool character building, and semi perma-death. Really great music,A great dungeon crawler. Solid battle mechanics with quick auto battles, cool character building, and semi perma-death. Really great music, dungeon maps, character designs and art work. The game is a satisfying challenge, but occasionally gives you something that is nearly impossible to find in the maps, which was annoying to me after a certain point. I also feel that the game would benefit from engaging you with a bit more story, even though the story isn't bad so far (I'm about half way through). Sprinkling more story segments here and there would break up the repetitive grind for items and levels. Full Review »

I find this game really addictive because of the loot. The battles are fast. Yes...it's challenging. Just grind your levels and get better.I find this game really addictive because of the loot. The battles are fast. Yes...it's challenging. Just grind your levels and get better. The art is amazing and the battle music is really lovely. Really cool elements in the game like being able to re-class your jobs (FFT style). Lots of character variety, items...It's like shin megami as well.

Overall, very good. If you like a challenge, play it. The divinity system helps you when its difficult. Grind your levels, get good. Don't be fooled by reviews like Gamestop giving it a low score...Trust me, the game deserves a fair 7.5-8 out of 10.
