xDefiant has some of that Call of Duty golden era feel that many fans have been asking for, but it also manages to add small gameplay tweaks to deliver a fresh, addictive and fun FPS experience. It falls short on launch content, but Ubisoft has a good foundation to build on.

XDefiant is a solid shooter that will likely scratch that arcade-y itch with its snappy gunplay, iconic map design, and fan-favourite game modes. It’s the perfect multiplayer shooter to chuck on at the weekend, and we suspect it’ll be home to several late-night sessions for old-school Call of Duty fans. It’s not quite the breath of fresh air for the genre that The Finals is, but more like a blast from the past. Is it a CoD killer? No, but if Ubisoft can work its magic and go hell-for-leather with its multi-franchise post-launch content, then XDefiant could flourish into a regular staple of the shooter genre.
  3. Ultimately, XDefiant is free-to-play, so there’s not going to be any buyer's remorse if it’s not for you, but I found it to be a surprisingly competent and enjoyable shooter. It straddles the line between COD’s bold, nonsense plays, and Counter-Strike’s methodical strategy, with a few typical Hero Shooter staples thrown in for good measure. When you’re playing with randoms online it’s almost always going to devolve into that nonsense gameplay, but when I’m playing a multiplayer shooter without a group, that’s exactly what I’m looking for. I’m not sure it’ll change the shooter landscape, but XDefiant is doing more things right than Hyper Scape ever did.

XDefiant's debut undoubtedly lays a solid foundation for Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter, which in terms of gameplay succeeds in offering a fast-paced, fun and very grounded experience, although not perfectly in focus.

XDefiant offers a fast-paced, arcade-style shooter experience that’s heavy on customization but leans towards grind-heavy progression and microtransactions. While the game’s diverse factions and loadouts provide variety, its reliance on grinding or spending cash might not appeal to everyone. It’s an entertaining shooter with plenty of potential, but the balance between fun and monetization could be a sticking point for some players.

It’s hard to deny that the minute-to-minute gameplay is just a whole lot of fun. The varied mechanics of each class, and the deep bench of weapon customisation, will offer something to keep the wheel spinning. If nothing else, that the game is free helps clear the hurdle of getting your mates to drop in – especially in the face of Call of Duty’s premium price tag – even if only for a month or two.

Ubisoft’s attempt to blend two disparate genres together backfires, creating massive balancing issues and diluting both experiences. Its lack of polish on the server side leads to outright aggravating and uneven experiences. Finally, while XDefiant is free-to-play, the fact that there’s little earn and outright unlock leaves little incentive to stick with the game beyond a couple of matches occasionally. XDefiant provides that solid, fun FPS action in small doses, but is sorely held back by a lack of focus, polish and earnable content.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. when i played the beta i had a lot of fun and i was really surprised for a fps 6v6 free to play game had that much of depth , the movement is fast but a little but clunky when i jump ,no sbmm, good weapons,
the characters from Ubisoft games, very good competitive for the grinder player which mean there is a skill gap so i hope they add qualify tournaments in middle of the season or at end with exclusive rewards and highlight the players at the end of the season based on his stats

6/10 for me. It is free though. So instead of a free battle royal, this is a free multiplayer. You have a black ops 4 feel with no kill6/10 for me. It is free though. So instead of a free battle royal, this is a free multiplayer. You have a black ops 4 feel with no kill streaks. I think the game is limited at 6/10 until the gun impact feel improves, reload while aiming gets added, kills treats, and more get added as well. It is in beta, but has a long way to go. Currently feels like going back 5-6 years in multiplayer. Expand
