A great new mix for Sonic! I loved the open zone setting, the zooming around and combat was a blast. Cyberspace levels were dope, rather addicting actually. I was pleasantly surprised. If you're on the fence, you won't be disappointed.

Un nuevo aire para Sonic, una historia bastante buena que te deja pegado al juego, sountrack hermoso, los personajes bien relacionados con Sonic y peleas frenéticas, sin duda de los mejores Sonic que existen

Not sure I've ever disagreed with the general critical reception more. Feels like we weren't even playing the same game? Finnicky platforming? It's never been more fast, precise or intuitive. Honestly probably my favorite overall sonic game, it's just such a complete package and so much more then I expected. My GOTY in a year with Elden Ring.

Edit: Honestly forgot the combat, a historical sore point for the series which is actually extremely good this time around with a fun varied moveset and a skill tree that keeps things fresh. It's been so terrible so long and it's suddenly something I look forward to! Crazy! Just a little bonus point.

Sonic Frontiers is not a game I had very high expectations for. The game did surpass those expectations but not by much. The open zone feels incredibly lifeless. It's not entirely unfun though, it can be a little fun sometimes. What isn't fun at all are the cyberspace levels. A complete downgrade from the boost levels we saw in Unleashed, Colors, Generations, and somehow even Forces. While the levels can have decent design sometimes (mostly because they take them from better games) Sonic does not control well in the slightest. Everytime I jump I feel like I'm fighting with the game, and Sonic is not fast at all in these levels. These are easily the worst parts of the game, and in my opinion, some of the worst Sonic gameplay we have ever gotten in the history of this franchise. There are some things I do love about this game though. The boss fights at the end of each island are AMAZING and are just super hype, especially with the music they used. The fishing minigame with Big the Cat is also very nice and relaxing, and I enjoyed doing it a lot. Overall, Sonic Frontiers is a game with some highs, but insanely low lows. I do think a casual fan would enjoy this a lot, but if you're a hardcore fan, it's a 50/50 chance you may love or hate this game. Expand

This game is a winning formula, but poorly executed. I genuinely enjoyed running around the open-zones, and the shorter format boost levels are actually fun, but this feels like a game in early development, with too many resources poured into things that don't matter. This game is a winning formula, but poorly executed. I genuinely enjoyed running around the open-zones, and the shorter format boost levels are actually fun, but this feels like a game in early development, with too many resources poured into things that don't matter. I won't rehash what everyone else is saying, but here are some of the things that don't make sense:

-Some cutscenes (ie story) are skippable while some aren't (ie animation for bridge being constructed)
-Floating propeller boxes for items can be broken from all sides except for the bottom
-Your attack and defense stats automatically level to the max based on your inventory, but you have to sit through a cut scene for every level of your speed or ring level you increase
-The fishing mini game is programmed to let you aim where you cast, but it doesn't affect the catch rate
-Fish caught in the mini-pame cycle through in the same order, so there is no such thing as rare catches, or a reason behind why some fish award more/less tokens.
-You have to cycle through map filters to fast travel, even though the icons stay the same.
-Sonic gets stuck on most inclines in 2D areas
-Camera doesn't know how to follow sonic in boss battles
-You use the same tokens to talk to friends to talk with the main antagonist (who is an NPC sometimes??)
-The game doesn't stop counting skill points even after you max out your skill tree
-The map will still alert you that you can level up when you are max level just because you have items in your inventory
-Parrying in mid-air makes Sonic float. Parrying also doesn't require any timing
-Most cutscenes are rehashes, and feel like they're added just to pad out game length.
-Tone of the game is very serious, but when you beat a "challenge" stage, Sonic does a little jig to a midi song that doesn't match the rest of the soundtrack
-The fourth island is clearly the top half of the first island that was repurposed (but it does have one of the best overworld themes)
-Lastly, I don't mind any of the music in this game individually, but I wish it followed a consistent theme. Like stick to all emo, or stick to all EDM, or do jazzy little jingles. Nothing about this game feels consistent, just a bunch of ideas that the team floated and then realized they didn't have time to edit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can say without a doubt, this is my all time favorite Sonic game, and that this is possibly one of the greatest of all time.

In an age where everything is taken literal, Frontiers takes a steep dive into the symbolic. Through mesmerizing imagery and grandiose music, the director confronts the players with their struggles in faith and understanding. This game goes to show that you don't need to understand a game in order to feel it. And I felt every minute of this one.

I don’t know what some critics are smoking. This game is genuinely amazing. It’s like Sonic, Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey mixed together. Even Shadow of the Colossus is in here. It should be a hot news item, how much of an achievement it is, and how Sonic Team has finally cracked the code to an incredible Sonic game.

The Sonic stuff is the best I’ve played; the controls are tight, the speed is fast and fun, the open world and the cyberspace levels are excellent. It’s “Breath of the Wild” because the open world is fun to explore, and you’re always running into new puzzles and collecting things that make you stronger by increasing your power and speed.

It’s “Super Mario Odyssey” because you’re always solving little overworld puzzles to get some reward, very similar to the Moons in that game. It’s very rewarding and motivating.

Critics have criticised the visuals. Again, I don’t know what they’re smoking. Maybe their standards are too high? Not every game has to look like God of War. I think it looks really beautiful and impressive. It’s true that there is pop-in on the overworld rail puzzles, but even this is not nearly as bad as some critics have said. Did they play a pre-patch version that had worse pop-in than the release date version? Because what I played is really not that bad, you can see many rails and platforms far into the distance.

Some critics have criticised the combat. Again, what on Earth are they smoking? The major bosses, like those in Shadow of the Colossus, are equal parts puzzle and awesome spectacle. They’re freakin’ rad. And the general combat with smaller enemies is so much fun - it’s so deep now, it’s crazy. Sonic has so many cool combat moves (that you unlock through rpg-style progression), and it’s just fun to earn them and toy around with them. The only games with deeper combat are those that are dedicated fighting games, like Devil May Cry - is that what the critics were expecting? And it’s honestly surprisingly not that far off. Yes, I agree that some enemy designs could be more interesting, but there actually are some really cool enemy designs in here already. Anyway, the critics have lost the plot. The game is bloody good. I’d recommend it to anyone for the full asking price.

Did not expect to have as much fun as I have been on a Sonic game. Exceptional game from start to finish Ignore the critics they have no clue on what a game is supposed to be.

Fast fluid and fun the open world is like a skate ring with endless loops and puzzles with mini rewards. The actual levels are a throwback to the classic sonic game short and sweet with exceptional soundtrack too.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
