This is what a Sonic game should be! Is it perfect? No. Is it engaging fun that makes you feel strong as Sonic? Yes. I’ve switched between that and the PS4 version of the game, and I would say it is still more than playable with lower frame rates or older hardware. The problem lies in that it is not as smooth or visually stunning, two things that really make the open zone stick the landing. This game strives in it’s open environments when you can flow between set pieces in creative and fast paced ways. This is not always an option however which leads me to other issues. Poor animations, a lack memorable and functioning set pieces, odd and lazy decisions for cyberspace stages, and overall polishing problems are just some issues that plague this game, but I can’t help but admire the ambition and how overall fun it is as a whole package. These are building blocks for Sega to start making complete games for the blue blur, instead of half baked forced out messes or glorified tech demos. You care about the story, you care about the gameplay, you care about the characters and that’s why it’s a good game. It’s not perfect, but the start to something great. Unless you lack the skill to control Sonic both fun & freely this game is automatic 8.5/10 & could be 10 if there weren’t any of these issues. Expand

I genuinely love sonic games but this one could have used some more polish before release. All of the animations are stiff and strange looking, the way Sonic’s momentum stops whenever you jump or just stop moving is so janky. When the game is letting you go fast in some of the cyberspace levels it’s SOMEWHAT fun which is why I’m not rating this game below a 5. When the game is letting you go fast in some of the cyberspace levels it’s SOMEWHAT fun which is why I’m not rating this game below a 5. But if I want to play a game with that cyberspace gameplay, I’ll just boot up Sonic Generations or Colors.

The presentation is seriously lacking, I don’t care for graphical fidelity, but the art direction here looks like something that could be made using mostly stock assets in stock unreal engine. You will be constantly running into walls that just pop out of nowhere. These issues kind of go away in the cyberspace levels where things are actually cool looking.

The music was good, I’m still listening to the 1-2 cyberspace music. Story and voice acting was passable. I’m so tired of reviews for games this year featuring the phrase, “this is a step in the right direction…” Yes! It is! But why can’t we just get to where we’re going already? Gamers need to higher their standards for AAA games, otherwise AAA developers will lose the craftsmanship that have given us the great games of the past. I love Sonic, and this guy deserves a 10/10 game, not a “step in the right direction.”

But everything else is God tier if you compare it to Generation there is a huge difference. It's not a perfect game but it's interesting to see that Sonic Team took the risk in trying something new and got most of it right. In the end, the concepts and ideas were good just the execution could have used a bit more time to cook in the oven. This game for me is a 7.5, but since there's no intermediate scores I'm giving it a 8.

More generic mediocre gameplay, straying further away from the decent path Sonic Mania was taking. Right back to Sonic 06 type mediocrity

I played it at my little cousins house and we had a lot of fun. Sonic sure has changed since I was a child. He still has his attitude but he also matured somewhat. A little like me. It was a blast to play with him once again. And now you can explore a lot more ground than you used to can. It reminded me when I explored the Johto region when Pokémon Gold and Silver came out. Kind of pathetic to watch these Dunkey fans review bomb this game. Why do some people like his content again? Is it because of his extreme gaming knowledge? Oh wait that can't be it, he doesn't have that. Oh yeah of course, because he does stupid voice when he talks in his reviews and 12 year olds think it's hilarious.

In all honesty, at this point i would feel embarrassed to call myself dunkey fan. He thinks Assassin's Creed and GTA are boring, hates FF7Remake, praises Last of Us 2 (awful game) and now shts on Sonic as well? I mean what next? Max Payne 3 is worst shooter? Anyway he's like one of the last people, who's opinion would mean ANYTHING to me.

As a fan of Sonic for a long time, Sonic Frontiers made me go back in time when i was a kid, and made me wanted to play Sonic games from start to finish for long hours, since first time my dad brought me a Mega Drive. The cyberspace levels were Also very entertaining and give us a glimpse of other Sonic games of the past, through the level design itself. The idea of the open world for me was very well executed. For those who like to take their time to explore and admiring the view of the Islands, it was a breath of fresh air.
Altho the game for me was an absolutelly masterpiece that all us Sonic fans were waiting for a long time, there still some aspects that i think SEGA could do better, for exemple:
-I found some bugs along the way that were kinda annoying. I was even stuck at a rock, glitching non stop. I had to shut down the game and open it again - There was times where my controls stopped fuctioning. For exemple when i was doing some jumps, it all the sudden they stop working. I had to repeat some times the same Path because of it. It was a little annoying.
    - The ending was good, but I was expecting a little more "wow factor". The boss fight could been a little longer, and was expecting some new form of power of Sonic. It is just my opinion.
Overall, Sonic Frontiers have a solid base for a future games. I hope that Ian Flinn continues working on games because he is a suberb storyteller and knows the world and the characters better than anyone else. Really recomend buying the game!

Sonic Frontiers is a step in the right direction for sonic, honestly the open zone game-play and the boss fights were revolutionary. The story, the visuals, the characters EVERYTHING was the best it has been for Sonic in years. Unfinished broken jank. Also automated, locked-in 2D platforming kind of defeats the 'open zone' concept. Needed at least another year in the oven. Maybe two.

There's a lot of improvements to be made in future patches, the lack of real momentum is a bummer, but the game really grows on you over time. I thouroughly enjoyed playing it, but it is by no means perfect. To this day, I believe Project Hero 2019 still has the best 3D sonic control. The idea and vision of the game is absolutely fabulous. In practice, however, the game is brought down by its execution, which you can see through after a short while and then the game has nothing to surprise you with. [Issue#324]

There is nothing remotely redeeming about this game. Nothing that even the most die-hard loyal Sonic Fans would or should advocate for. I hope that one day someone who cares enough about this franchise could give us something-anything of substance. A fan can hope, can’t they? A fan can hope.

Finally, after almost 25years of half measures and mostly mediocre titles, Sonic has finally reached the 3D levels of gameplay it needed to reach. Yes, the pop in is absolutely inexcusable and the ancient gatekeeping grindy methods damage the flow of the game for no reason, but a wonderfully built base exists here, with a highly entertaining adventure in wonderfully melancholic world and a surprisingly well founded story, thankfully clean of Sonic’s annoying 3rd tier friends!
