    SAVESTATES ARRIVED, now is perfect!

    Brilliant game! So so so funny, amazing shooting system, incredible dualsense implementation, incredible sound, 4k 60fps with raytracing. What else?     UPDATE: I'm dropping my score from 9 to 2. It's simple: RETURNAL is a roguelite, of course I'm ready to die and start all from the beginning, over and over again: But the problem is one: THIS GAME IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH LIFE! I got a brother, we are two and we can't buy two PS5. If i want just save and play after my bro I can't and I got to suicide and lost all of my progression. Why? This is so stupid! If I want to play returnal, I got to play ONLY returnal until the end, cause if you want to play with a friend to another game this is impossible to do.
    EVERY ROGUELITE/LITE got the savemode!! Of course, if i die i lost my progression, but deny this feature is so dumb!    … Expand

    One of the best Playstation game for years.

    Gameplay and Immersion are outstanding.

    Might be very difficult for non-hardcore gamers who better avoid it.

    Returnal is a great game, but it is not for everyone. Negatives are that it can be difficult, which may be off putting to some, and then there is the issue of not being able to save during a run, which can last 2 plus hours sometimes. Having said that, I really enjoyed this game…my first rogue like, and it showed me the thrill that if I die, the run is over. I may play Hades now, anotherReturnal is a great game, but it is not for everyone. Having said that, I really enjoyed this game…my first rogue like, and it showed me the thrill that if I die, the run is over. I may play Hades now, another rogue like, a game I would have never sought out to play if not for the excitement I had in Returnal.

    Returnal has great atmosphere, and in more than one way reminded me of an adult Metroid Prime game (which is good). I found the game challenging at first, but then things clicked and with that new found confidence, saw myself dramatically improve in the game. Leveling weapons and learning as you go really goes a long way towards overcoming the difficulty. I couldn’t wait to reach a little farther in the game for the next permanent upgrade, that would then be there every run.

    I spent around 57 hours playing the game, and was 4 trophies away from platinum. Unfortunately those last 4 trophies I needed are RNG based. That was my only personal negative with this game. I planned around the longer runs, and sometimes put my console to rest, FIRST making sure nothing could be installed during rest mode, that could close the game. If you are on the fence, grab it on a future sale. For many, it’s a game changer, and I’m glad I played a game like this.    … Expand

    One of the best games I have ever played. Unreal atmosphere, addictive gameplay, for me this is one of the best shooters ever made. A true masterpiece. Can’t understand how this hasn’t got higher ratings, perhaps it’s too hard for modern gamers. Anyway, now to get the platinum!

    Destiny and binding of Isaac is what im getting from this but still stands on its own very well. The rush and the feeling when finally beating a boss or such is also in comparison like the dark souls games. Simply amazing an game!

    This game is amazing and it really takes advantage of all the cool tech inside the PlayStation. It’s a shame that some Xbox fans seem to be reviewbombing this game just like they review bombed the last of us 2.

    Amazing! I finished this game and I really like the new, save game feature. The gameplay for me, makes this the best shooter out there. The bosses are amazing! Sadly not everyone likes rouge like games, so I hope developers make a returnal game but with a more traditional shooter structure, so everyone can experience the returnal world.

    A mixture of roguelite with metroidvania dyes for the new generation. I've been fan of Housemarque during several years. This time they have surprised me with Returnal that shows a great evolution for the studio and their way of making games, they have kept me glued to my PS5 since Friday

    Great game!! The story and the gameplay is engaging, plus the visual is beautiful. If you are looking for a game where you just relax and follow the story (like Uncharted) this is NOT the game for you.

    Al fin un estudio consigue sacar el primer roguelite indie. El rendimiento en ps5 es excepcional. Una banda sonora excelente con el compositor de Midsommar, así como un diseño artístico a la altura de pocos.     I am in love with this game! I have out in several hours already and I am addicted. The gameplay is fun, fast-paced and challenging. Environment is well designed and the use of the DualSense controller is exceptional. Story is intriguing and makes you want to discover everything you can about it.     The user score would be much higher if it wasn’t for review bombers, ignore them. This is one of the best games in recent years and definitely a contender for GOTY. Highly recommend.

    Wow, amazed at what Housemarque has built in this deep psychological horror that is Returnal. The use of haptic feedback letting me feel ever singular droplet of rain, feeling the gun charging up to release a powerful blast its next to none. The adaptive triggers give you enhanced control of Selene's weapon making you feel like at times like Ripley mowing down xenomorphs, extremely badass.Wow, amazed at what Housemarque has built in this deep psychological horror that is Returnal. The use of haptic feedback letting me feel ever singular droplet of rain, feeling the gun charging up to release a powerful blast its next to none. The adaptive triggers give you enhanced control of Selene's weapon making you feel like at times like Ripley mowing down xenomorphs, extremely badass. The 1 second loading are just icing on the cake tbh. It is just as challenging as Dark Souls or Sekiro some might say even more so but it strikes the right balance to make every time you pick up the controller to play feel fresh and as challenging as the last time. I can't put it down and can't recommend it enough. As far as content goes its brimming with new stuff to find in every single room ranging from items, artifacts, keys, suit enhancements, chests, unique guns, parasites to hidden walls, large variety of enemies, ancient tombs and even swords its **** phenomenal. I felt in love with this game. If you're up for a challenge the price is 100% worth it. If you're more of a chill gamer and can't handle the pressure, wait for a sale, but it is still definitely worth every penny and every gamer out there needs to experience it. Enjoy.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At first I was a bit skeptical about the rogue-like elements of the game because I generally don't like that genre. The whole thing that if you die you restart from the beginning with only key items scared me. But the reality is a bit different. There are 3 acts. In act 1 if you die you go back to the first biome but after defeating the boss it gets easier to go back to the previous point. You must follow the mission point on the map and in a couple of minutes you are back to the point you where before dying. Sometimes there's even a portal that you unlock if you fight (you don't need to defeat it) the boss like in the second biome that puts you near the boss and the portal to the third biome. In the act 2 its the same but you star from the 4 biome until the final biome the six biome. Then there's the act 3 that is like a secret ending after the credits.
    You keep through all the loops the weapon traits from all the weapons and the ether a useful resource that sometimes can allow you to create a "save point" in the recontructor a specific part of the map.

    The story it's really good, from it's introduction it reveals an extraordinary plot with the goal of your own rescue. It keeps you hooked from the beginning. You can also collect recordings from previous loops that open a lot about Selene state of mind through the loops.

    Speaking about graphics and frame rate it's a 4k 60fps almost if not totally locked.
    The gameplay is really addictive and keeps you going for a long time. It's difficult enough to keep you going loop after loop but not impossible to beat you just need to collect items and weapons that makes stronger and the game becomes a lot easier.

    A really good starter for the new generation of PS5 games that really uses the tech of the dualsense controller.

    Brutal but in the best way. Feels fairly balanced and rooted in skill.
    Permanent unlocks and faster routes after bosses means the lost progress isn't as bad as you might've thought.
    Probably one of the more interesting games I've played recently and to top it off, the graphics are magnificent!

    Very satisfying gameplay. Very satisfying visuals. There isn't much of a story but this is obviously not what we expect from this game.
    10/10 for the originality, there is no other game like it. This is a must play.

    Could have a save progress functionality to allow you to close the game, but it would be overwritten upon death, just to allow people to stop playing safely.
    Other than that an excellent game all around, I have experienced only a single bug of lack o synchronicity during the attachment of the grappling hook, where the images overlapped and the sound was clunky.

    This is how the modern rogue-like games should look like. We all love the genre for the gameplay and if there is the modern graphics instead of traditional pixel art, I’m the first taker.
    Returnal keeps most of traditional rogue like features and excels in visuals, providing an incredible and immersive experience.

The story quite mysterious, with not many clues for beginners. Another thing I don't like is there is no save or checkpoint, While playing Returnal, I can't turn off my ps5 or play otherA super COOL game ever played before. I'm not a fan of rogue-like games but when I play this game, I was totally shocked, the haptic feedback, the adaptive trigger of DualSense in Returnal is perfect. The story quite mysterious, with not many clues for beginners. Another thing I don't like is there is no save or checkpoint, While playing Returnal, I can't turn off my ps5 or play other games because it will recycle my run, it's kinda annoying cuz I can't spend 40hours, I can't spend 2-3 weeks just play only Returnal.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great game! If you beat biome 2 boss and biome 3 boss there is a shortcut to those biomes in biome 1. If you reach biome 4 it will now be the starting point every time you die. Biome 4 also have shortcut to biome 5 and biome 6. It is not for everyone but it is a game you need to play to understand. It is not that hard and it gets easy every time you try. A piece of advice though don't gamble with the malignant items, treasures :)… Expand

    Art design is amazing, derivative of Alien Prometheus but that's a good thing. Clever mechanics and progress.

    Healthy variations in guns, enemies and mechanics.

    Probably the best game I've played since Bloodborne, and could even be better.

    This is truly a masterpiece. The gameplay-loop is super addicting and fun. The game encourages push-forward combat similar to Doom Eternal. The story requires a bit of digging to understand but is deep and makes sense. A lot of metaphores and symbolism in this one!

The story might seem confusing at first, but it allows for many different interpretations that are (for me) part of the fun. It's difficult, but fair, and it is both beautiful and addictive. The story might seem confusing at first, but it allows for many different interpretations that are (for me) part of the fun.     Returnal is a gaming addiction. One of the most intense and adrenaline rush-filled gameplay sessions ever, incredible atmosphere, tight gameplay, great soundtrack, mysterious story, Housemarque really did an incredible job with the first AAA Roguelike game. Returnal is my 2021 GOTY by FAR. I highly recommend it.

It's challenging you will get no argument from me on that point, I had one or two areas in the game that really had me stuck but after overcoming them my skill level improved, tactics improved and general understanding of the game improved and I was able to complete the game from there without too much trouble.

    The level of challenge throughout means boss fights and difficult zone and will have your heart pumping and killing a boss and making meaningful progress in the game will leave you feel elated. Every play through is slightly different which will force you to adapt to new weapons and tactics.

    The atmosphere of this world is thick and ominous, you feel isolated alone and afraid but not helpless. The randomness of each room that lies ahead will keep you guessing so you never truly feel comfortable even if you have experience a biome before. I also just want to make a point of the sound design it is a glorious achievement, both the atmospheric sounds, alien sounds and of course the music which is all woven into the fabric of the narrative.

    The game isn't long but there is no fat, it's a focused experience with a compelling story. Upon completion I was glad it was over but in a good way, it felt like the right place for the game to end. There are several good excuses for a player to return to Returnal after completion so replay value is there.    … Expand

    Only thing that prevents me scoring this above an 8 is the extremely vague story, even after searching online for an explanation of the story and ending, it seems nobody really knows. There's a secret ending which I watched on youtube, and even that explains nothing.

    Ultimately, it feels like you're just running round trying to kill the boss and unlock the next area because that's what you're supposed to do...rather than understanding why you are going through these areas, what it all means etc.    … Expand

This was never an issue for me since rest mode worked great and I don’t share my system, but this is great news for anyone holding off on beating the game due to that setback. I didn't think I'd beat it after dying so much for the first couple of days, but it suddenly clicked and I progressed to the end.     Great game super difficult yet very challenging and rewarding. The developer did a great job with the upscale 4K 60 fps, sound and music is awesome! The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers make the PS5 shine even more. A must buy for all rpg type horror shooter. Great job

    Awesome game! Very tough. Not for everybody. Probably not even for me as I struggled for 100 hours but finally made it to the end. I am over 40 years old so I am no longer as good at this as I used to 30 years ago but, nonetheless, this is super awesome! If you like challenge you’ll enjoy. This is harder than all souls games I finished, at least for me.

And yes, it makes more sense given the game's premise.

    I thought that, at a certain point, the game loses the right balance in its challenge and, later on, it happens again, but in reverse. But none of that prevents Returnal of being a masterpiece with a fun and challenging combat!

Getting hit once by the smallest enemy makes you lose health, makes your weapons worse, AND greatly reduces your max health. Only one item restores health, and it’s 100x better than any other artifact (adrenaline leech).     The game is visually atmospheric. It has a fast-pace gameplay style witch various variables and randomization that keeps it engaging and non-repetitive. The story tires to be deep and metaphorical, but comes off to be a little pretentious.

    They've gotten us used to only releasing narrative games where it's all about the story and the graphics, but with bland 3rd person gameplay.
    But for once we are dealing with a rogue-lite! A genre almost never used for AAA. And what a game! We find everything that makes the charm of the genre, bosses, different weapons, powers to unlock... All with a very successful gameplay!
    Small defect, the lifespan is quite low for a rogue-lite, we quickly go around it, many rogue-lites with a much lower budget do better.

    This game offers a completely unique and amazing experience that very little rouge-like games are able to offer. The story at first feels vague and simple, but trust me, it’s like an onion. The more you peel, the more you find.

    Game surprised me how good it was. Demon souls, rogue like style game with interesting story. Combat was smooth and enjoyable, graphics was very good. Finished under 100 death with both endings, story was very arresting.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Returnal is a breath-taking experience made for the PS5. It consists of a very difficult playstyle with only 2 checkpoints throughout the whole entire game.
    With a splendid narrative and awesome graphics, this game feels next-generation.
    However, the multiplayer sometimes breaks and crashes which could ruin the experience for some.

    There is absolutely nothing like this game out there - a roguelike story driven metroidvania bordering in a souls like. Yes, the runs are tough, but the gameplay is amazing and this game has some kf the best boss battles ever.

    The bulk of the negative reviews on here are invalid because of A) Patches and B) Limited perspective. I'll explain the majority I see. Complaint: "No save system to pause runs". This has been patched and now runs can be suspended, so that negates a majority of the negative reviews. Complaint: "There is no progression system". This is completely    I really enjoyed this game. A lot.

    Complaint: "There is no progression system". This is completely false. People are just not used to this style of progression. They are used to skill trees, leveling up, etc. The progression in this system doesn't rely on traditional methods. Progression in this game relies on A) Your own skill-based progression (play more, learn more, get better) and B) Unlocking new items, artifacts, parasites, etc. to use on new runs. To say there isn't a progression system is ridiculous. It's just not your typical, boring, overused systems.

    Complaint: "It's too difficult". This is also completely false - and plays into one of the game's pitfalls in my opinion. This game is actually too easy. Once you learn and adapt to the playstyle, unlock new items/artifcats/parasites and develop strategies to make an OP build, this game is far from difficult. In my playthrough right to the credits, it took a measly 12hrs of gameplay, I only died 17 times, and only 1 of those deaths was during a boss fight. It's not a hard game - you just need to get better.

    As for my quick list of positives and negatives. World and graphics are beautiful. Each biome is just unique enough to keep the player intrigued. Combat is fun as hell. Story is shrouded in mystery and keeps you wondering. Several strategies to building yourself to OP status. Enemy variety is decent (not amazing). Boss designs are wicked.

    On the other hand, the game is too easy. Weapons aren't all equal, so I stuck to the same 2 weapons as much as possible to get through the game. I wish this choice wasn't so clearcut and each biome tempted me in some way to use a different weapon. Enemy variety is OK, but for each biome the skins of the enemies change but they feel like the same enemy from the previous biome. Not enough diversity here. And of course, again, this game is just too easy. I was expecting, from the reviews, an extremely difficult game, and it was nowhere near that.

    All in all, definitely worth a play. Enjoy the mystery. Enjoy the new style of progression. Enjoy the amazing combat. 8/10    … Expand

    One of the best games I’ve experienced in a long time. Up there with elden ring for me. The combat is impactful and feels great. The atmosphere is mysterious and pulls you in and makes you want to explore Atropos. Has a touch of metroidvania flair that I love as well.

    A perfect example of the performance of the PS5 and all its functions. Great gameplay and the music catches and won't let go until you get to the bottom of it all. But in the end, the final may surprise you unpleasantly.
