Sleek visuals, simple yet intriguing narrative and an absolutely incredible soundtrack; OXTO really is a force to behold in this genre. Superb sound design and variety of weapons and abilities, coupled with the focus mechanic help create varying gameplay styles to test and innovate. It’s only the erratic AI and some choices relating to the game’s upgrades that can make OXTO lose its momentum in the long term replay ability aspect. But OXTO is a game I would highly recommend, a real fun blast.

Otxo is a stylistic and action-packed top-down roguelike that stands out with its unique visual style and dynamic gunplay. Developed by a solo developer and offering a challenging yet rewarding experience, it captures the essence of intense action and strategic combat. The game’s focus on weapon swapping and the strategic use of the focus mechanic for precision targeting introduces a layer of depth that keeps each run exciting.

Regardless, OTXO is still a fantastic over-the-top action game, and if brutal challenges and unforgiving setbacks are your bread and butter it’ll likely be a game for you. Even when a run doesn’t go your way and you’re booted back to the beginning it’s hard to shake the feeling that you’re an unstoppable badass who just got a little careless but will do even better next time.

Otxo is an interesting mix between John Wick and Hotline Miami but it is more frenetic with challenging moments. Its monochrome graphics can confuse us at some point. However, it is entertaining with a critical story that can feel repetitive after a while.

OTXO is a fun game and the roguelike mix generates enormous replayability, but at the cost of the polish previously seen in its inspirations.

If you’re a fan of violent twin-stick shooters, it’s well worth checking OTXO out. Its roguelite elements perhaps don’t do it any favours, especially when there’s not much that keeps its gameplay feeling fresh between one run and another, but it provides a lasting challenge. Ultimately, we’d recommend players check out Hotline Miami first that offers a very similar experience. And if they still want more, OTXO will be waiting.

While it’s commendable that OTXO attempts to freshen up the top-down shooter genre by mixing in roguelike qualities and a time-bending mechanic, the result, unfortunately, feels at odds with itself.
