26 years after the first game. And they couldn't add a thing to the game!!!! Really disappointed and this would be probably the last oddworld game I would play.

This is a perfect example of HOW TO F#CK UP A WHOLE FRANCHISE!

    And last, but not least:
THE MOST STUPID BUNCH OF TROPHIES for PS
The trophies for PS5 will not make you enjoy a challenge, instead they will simply ruin your experience from the very beginning.

Example? well, how about the fact you gotta complete the very first level with NO DAMAGE(????) which is insane, and you can't just restart from checkpoint, oh no sir, you HAVE TO CLOSE THE FKING GAME AND RESTART! Same if you want to get the no-death trophy, you can continue from the checkpoint, but you still have to exit close0 the game. This is utterly stupid.

Another example of how nonsense is in this game?
How about the new crafting abilities of Abe, most of which you practically use ONCE OR TWICE in the whole game, or the TOTALLY USELESS CURRENCY to open certain gates? All this nonsense to justify the presence of in-game badges for level 100% completion. Pathetic, lack of ideas huh?

Seriously, don't buy this game. Not worth the money at all, and this comes from somebody who loved Abe's adventures since the very first release for PS1.

Screw you devs/management of Soulstorm game, you ruined it for real.

Oddworld Soulstorm recaptures the exodus odd and mysterious atmosphere of exodus. The game starts and ends it’s first arc a little weak.
The middle and end are worth downloading or buying the game for. The other bad thing is there are some bugs. This game is worth playing though.

Probably the worst experience I had on PS. The game is extremely, and i mean extremely buggy. even after all the patches. As a QA Engineer I would be embarrassed to release a product to costumers in this state with such game breaking bugs.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one(And i even got it for free via ps plus).

Polar extremes with hand holding boss-fight guides followed swiftly by insta-failure of 100% completion triggered by something seemingly obvious. Seems like they tried to pad the run time by making you repeat sections and unskippable videos hundreds of times until you've memorised the pattern and then the game then decides to respond differently to your actions /inputs when you finally get a good run. The checkpoint system is terrible, controls are imprecise, crafting is needless, and the bugs/crashes are plentiful. All in all not a stellar release. I would have been pissed if I'd paid for this. UPDATE: Finally finished this and was greet with NO ENDING, not good, bad or otherwise, just cut to credits. This game has actually undone my love for the series... Expand

Hands down one of the greatest platformers ever made. Graphics and animation are incredible. Nothing built on unity looks like this. Story is cinema quality and beautifully rendered animation performances that really capture the emotions. So much depth and beauty in this game. Totally refreshing rare gaming experience that is actually a lot of fun for spectators to watch others play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Controls are crap. Aiming is a joke. I completed the final Yard level after a week and a million attempts just for the screen to go black and the game to crash which restarted me back at the top of the level. The game is artificially difficult due to the pss poor controls. If I had bought this game I'd have returned it but because it was free with plus it gets a few more points. Very forgettable. Expand

I'm a huge fan of the franchise. Since the original PlayStation, I've always considered it as one of the best franchises on the console. Then there were some versions that I didn't really like on PlayStation 2 and PSP. But on PlayStation 4, New'n'Tasty got my hype up in the series. A wonderful game that made me create a high expectation for Soulstorm.

As part of PSN Plus free games, I started it on PlayStation 5. My hope it was to play the best game of whole franchise. And I have to say that almost all technical aspects are very good. Graphics, gameplay, new skills, cutscenes. Everything adapted to new consoles generation. But early, in the first hours of the game, I found big problems.

The level design is not as good as it was on previous games. I don't know how much the bugs (they are a lot) screw up as well but mostly when the stage forces you to run away from an airship, the terrible level design make us being hit by fireballs on unfair way in some places and, after the death on the same place, the fireballs didn't hit us anymore. Some enemies AI turned off and it used to block our path to go on stealth mode.

But even with these problems, which are very serious because the level design in this kind of game is essential, I still kept going forward because I expected it to get better. But the worst thing happened. Specifically in the Phat Station stage, there is a part with an elevator, after going through an entire area full of enemies and friends to save. After go up using the elevator, the game ask you to explore before boarding on a train. When you are exploring the stage, your character ends up going back to the part of the elevator and door where you came from closes. As a result, the elevator is on the top floor and the closed door to return, it is not possible to call the elevator back again. A simple button to call the elevator back would solve the problem. But here begins the part where Oddworld Inhabitants has really failed.

I contacted their support through 2 different channels. I haven't been answered in any until today (almost 2 months later). Knowing about several problems in the game, they released patches with several fixes. Versions 1.06 then 1.07 and 1.08. In all of them, I tested the part where I got stuck, in none of them solved the issue. In one of the patches it says that it prevented players from getting stuck in the same place. But nothing solved for those who were already got stuck. In other words, Oddworld Inhabitants simply ignored those who were already playing and were in trouble, solving only the problem for new players.

A huge disappointment! Perhaps in the future, I will try to start the whole game over again. But now, the only thing I can do is regret that one of my favorite franchises has become a huge disappointment.

    In Brazilian Portuguse:

Graphics: 11/10 I love them. Though it is the usual with this engine (silly ragdolls from time to time)
Sound 7/10: Too much WHOOOOOAAAAAM and BZZZZZEEEEEEUUUUGH. Oddworld was about subtlety. Explosions sound fine, as well as weapons and environmental doodads in general. But if I want to listen to epic, bombastic music I'd play Battlefield. Where is the subtlety gone ? Tracks matching

But if I want to listen to epic, bombastic music I'd play Battlefield. Where is the subtlety gone ? Tracks matching the setting ? They all sound the same now.
Gameplay 2/10: I side with the Sligs. Absolutely.
Mudokons that aren't throwing what they're given despite being set to aggressive behaviour and refuse to get into lockers (fixed by now per patch) don't deserve to live on. Especially after that level where you open the cells and Sligs start spawning left and right and your pals refuse to throw some candy at them... 'twas the first time I rooted for the Sligs picking off the fleeing Mudokons in the background one by one (after trying to save them all for a good 17 times).
Controls are finicky, especially Abe's vertical jumping with the left joystick (somehow worse that New n tasty).
Materials could be slightly more available in containers.
I love the puzzles but not every damn screen.
Have some jump and run segments where we only have to jump and run. And intelligently posess Sligs to kill them on other places. You know, like the original. And not search for the one switch while avoiding Sligs, Zappers and 12 hazards at once. Its too much after some time.
Missing a TON of promised features:
    a) Choosing your destination. 'Member when we would arrive at a train yard and could select the place we want to travel to next ? Now it's all predetermined
    b) Evolved Quarma system. 'Member that they stated ''If we killed bad guys, that's good Quarma, but cruelly killing helpless enemies would reward us with a great drop of our Quarma ? Along with this the line that ''ideally no one dies, let all Sligs live''
    c) Improved camera system. Dunno about you, in two occasions in-game I didnt see the Mud's because the camera was showing me a sheet of metal in front for example. Or the fact that you always see a rock or something in front of you when you reach the edge of a platform near these doodads. Why not pan the camera from behind Abe so that we can see where we're going?
    d) CHI CHARMS. WHERE ARE THEY ? THE GAMES' PROMISED SECONDARY ECONOMY ?
    e) New wildlife that's gonna scare the crap out of us. Dunno about you, the Sleeches were fecking lame. They actually threw out the creatures that frightened us the most. But who am I talking to after the debacle that scrabs, paramites etc became after Munch's Oddysee...

The game's NOTHING like the original vision you claimed it to be. Abe's Exoddus was a 9 month rush that came out more polished and with TONS of content compared to this.
1 point because it's Oddworld and they bring out 1 game every 10 years or so...

Glitchy collisions, sluggish input and frustrating level design made this a less then plesant experience. Most of the time I completed a level felt like a relief, knowing I don't have to go through that again.

The mines are completely broken, sometimes not activating when enemies run over them and requires nano precision timing to disarm. Once I died 10 times trying to disarm two mines

The game is supposed to have 3D sound but I can't tell the difference between this and any other last-gen game.

I’m a huge fan of the Oddworld games, that why i found Soulstorm so disappointing. The level design, graphics, and cutscenes are all top notch, but the game’s story is rather bland and uninteresting compared to Exodus’. Why did Lorn remove the plot threads of the spirits appealing to Abe to prevent his ancestors bones from being turned into Brew?
The gameplay is super frustrating and the lack of a quick save is unforgivable.
I’m stupefied that Lorn would release such a buggy game. His previous works were all so highly polished.

This is a triumphant return to Oddworld. Soulstorm does fantastic things with Abe's story and shows some real advances with the developer's designs. Utterly excellent look, and a world that oozes with consumerist evils make this the definitive new Oddworld experience. There are absolutely no obstacles to heartily recommending this game to all players new and old. Can't wait to see what comes next!

Soulstorm is old school and it’s for you to decide whether that’s a flaw or not. You can definitely feel the spirit of the old Oddworlds, but for me the devs were to conservative. I would really welcome a touch of madness, some variety to spice thing up. However, if a solid, challenging retro platformer is what you’re looking for – go for it, you’ll be pleased. [06/2021, p.50]

While that means Soulstorm works - accidentally or otherwise - as a metaphor for the struggle of the working classes, all that toil rarely makes for a particularly engaging game. [Issue#359, p.112]
