26 years after the first game. And they couldn't add a thing to the game!!!! Really disappointed and this would be probably the last oddworld game I would play.

    And last, but not least:
THE MOST STUPID BUNCH OF TROPHIES for PS
The trophies for PS5 will not make you enjoy a challenge, instead they will simply ruin your experience from the very beginning.

Example? well, how about the fact you gotta complete the very first level with NO DAMAGE(????) which is insane, and you can't just restart from checkpoint, oh no sir, you HAVE TO CLOSE THE FKING GAME AND RESTART! Same if you want to get the no-death trophy, you can continue from the checkpoint, but you still have to exit close0 the game. This is utterly stupid.

Another example of how nonsense is in this game?
How about the new crafting abilities of Abe, most of which you practically use ONCE OR TWICE in the whole game, or the TOTALLY USELESS CURRENCY to open certain gates? All this nonsense to justify the presence of in-game badges for level 100% completion. Pathetic, lack of ideas huh?

Seriously, don't buy this game. Not worth the money at all, and this comes from somebody who loved Abe's adventures since the very first release for PS1.

Screw you devs/management of Soulstorm game, you ruined it for real.

Oddworld Soulstorm recaptures the exodus odd and mysterious atmosphere of exodus. The game starts and ends it’s first arc a little weak.
The middle and end are worth downloading or buying the game for. The other bad thing is there are some bugs. This game is worth playing though.

Probably the worst experience I had on PS. The game is extremely, and i mean extremely buggy. even after all the patches. As a QA Engineer I would be embarrassed to release a product to costumers in this state with such game breaking bugs.
Do yourself a favor and skip this one(And i even got it for free via ps plus).

In an era where even console developers are conscious of our time this game seems to completely disregard it. Polar extremes with hand holding boss-fight guides followed swiftly by insta-failure of 100% completion triggered by something seemingly obvious. Seems like they tried to pad the run time by making you repeat sections and unskippable videos hundreds of times until you've memorised the pattern and then the game then decides to respond differently to your actions /inputs when you finally get a good run. The checkpoint system is terrible, controls are imprecise, crafting is needless, and the bugs/crashes are plentiful. All in all not a stellar release. I would have been pissed if I'd paid for this. UPDATE: Finally finished this and was greet with NO ENDING, not good, bad or otherwise, just cut to credits. This game has actually undone my love for the series... Expand

Hands down one of the greatest platformers ever made. Graphics and animation are incredible. Nothing built on unity looks like this. Story is cinema quality and beautifully rendered animation performances that really capture the emotions. So much depth and beauty in this game. Totally refreshing rare gaming experience that is actually a lot of fun for spectators to watch others play.

I completed the final Yard level after a week and a million attempts just for the screen to go black and the game to crash which restarted me back at the top of the level. I'm a huge fan of the franchise. Since the original PlayStation, I've always considered it as one of the best franchises on the console. Then there were some versions that I didn't really like on PlayStation 2 and PSP. But on PlayStation 4, New'n'Tasty got my hype up in the series. A wonderful game that made me create a high expectation for Soulstorm.

As part of PSN Plus free games, I started it on PlayStation 5. My hope it was to play the best game of whole franchise. And I have to say that almost all technical aspects are very good. Graphics, gameplay, new skills, cutscenes. Everything adapted to new consoles generation. But early, in the first hours of the game, I found big problems.

The level design is not as good as it was on previous games. I don't know how much the bugs (they are a lot) screw up as well but mostly when the stage forces you to run away from an airship, the terrible level design make us being hit by fireballs on unfair way in some places and, after the death on the same place, the fireballs didn't hit us anymore. Some enemies AI turned off and it used to block our path to go on stealth mode.

But even with these problems, which are very serious because the level design in this kind of game is essential, I still kept going forward because I expected it to get better. But the worst thing happened. Specifically in the Phat Station stage, there is a part with an elevator, after going through an entire area full of enemies and friends to save. After go up using the elevator, the game ask you to explore before boarding on a train. When you are exploring the stage, your character ends up going back to the part of the elevator and door where you came from closes. As a result, the elevator is on the top floor and the closed door to return, it is not possible to call the elevator back again. A simple button to call the elevator back would solve the problem. But here begins the part where Oddworld Inhabitants has really failed.

I contacted their support through 2 different channels. I haven't been answered in any until today (almost 2 months later). Knowing about several problems in the game, they released patches with several fixes. Versions 1.06 then 1.07 and 1.08. In all of them, I tested the part where I got stuck, in none of them solved the issue. In one of the patches it says that it prevented players from getting stuck in the same place. But nothing solved for those who were already got stuck. In other words, Oddworld Inhabitants simply ignored those who were already playing and were in trouble, solving only the problem for new players.

A huge disappointment! Perhaps in the future, I will try to start the whole game over again. But now, the only thing I can do is regret that one of my favorite franchises has become a huge disappointment.

    In Brazilian Portuguse:

But if I want to listen to epic, bombastic music I'd play Battlefield. Where is the subtlety gone ? Tracks matching the setting ? They all sound the same now.
Gameplay 2/10: I side with the Sligs. Absolutely.
Mudokons that aren't throwing what they're given despite being set to aggressive behaviour and refuse to get into lockers (fixed by now per patch) don't deserve to live on. Especially after that level where you open the cells and Sligs start spawning left and right and your pals refuse to throw some candy at them... 'twas the first time I rooted for the Sligs picking off the fleeing Mudokons in the background one by one (after trying to save them all for a good 17 times).
Controls are finicky, especially Abe's vertical jumping with the left joystick (somehow worse that New n tasty).
Materials could be slightly more available in containers.
I love the puzzles but not every damn screen.
Have some jump and run segments where we only have to jump and run. And intelligently posess Sligs to kill them on other places. You know, like the original. And not search for the one switch while avoiding Sligs, Zappers and 12 hazards at once. Its too much after some time.
Missing a TON of promised features:
    a) Choosing your destination. 'Member when we would arrive at a train yard and could select the place we want to travel to next ? Now it's all predetermined
    b) Evolved Quarma system. 'Member that they stated ''If we killed bad guys, that's good Quarma, but cruelly killing helpless enemies would reward us with a great drop of our Quarma ? Along with this the line that ''ideally no one dies, let all Sligs live''
    c) Improved camera system. Dunno about you, in two occasions in-game I didnt see the Mud's because the camera was showing me a sheet of metal in front for example. Or the fact that you always see a rock or something in front of you when you reach the edge of a platform near these doodads. Why not pan the camera from behind Abe so that we can see where we're going?
    d) CHI CHARMS. WHERE ARE THEY ? THE GAMES' PROMISED SECONDARY ECONOMY ?
    e) New wildlife that's gonna scare the crap out of us. Dunno about you, the Sleeches were fecking lame. They actually threw out the creatures that frightened us the most. But who am I talking to after the debacle that scrabs, paramites etc became after Munch's Oddysee...

The game's NOTHING like the original vision you claimed it to be. Abe's Exoddus was a 9 month rush that came out more polished and with TONS of content compared to this.
1 point because it's Oddworld and they bring out 1 game every 10 years or so...

Glitchy collisions, sluggish input and frustrating level design made this a less then plesant experience. Most of the time I completed a level felt like a relief, knowing I don't have to go through that again.

The mines are completely broken, sometimes not activating when enemies run over them and requires nano precision timing to disarm. Once I died 10 times trying to disarm two mines

I’m a huge fan of the Oddworld games, that why i found Soulstorm so disappointing. The level design, graphics, and cutscenes are all top notch, but the game’s story is rather bland and uninteresting compared to Exodus’. Why did Lorn remove the plot threads of the spirits appealing to Abe to prevent his ancestors bones from being turned into Brew?
The gameplay is super frustrating and the lack of a quick save is unforgivable.
I’m stupefied that Lorn would release such a buggy game. His previous works were all so highly polished.

    - at places very unbalanced in its difficulty
    - at times clunky controls and aims
    - the game doesnt really have a good atmosphere because of the clean 3d-looks of the surroundings
    - an OK ending with an kinda unsatisfying cliffhanger
    - the Quarma system which i liked in previous games is kinda bad in this one, if you save 100% in 10 levels and 79% in 5 levels, you get the bad ending? really?
    - The Blimp. Update fixed the random deaths but its still just plain annoying.

    the good things:

+ when it works properly, the gameplay is fun and challenging
+ The world is rich and its characters are adorable and great
+ the story is good, but not great. i fell like a few more cutscenes would have helped a lot.
+ Oddworld humor, even if not as much as in the other games
+ new individual designs for Mudokons and Glukkons

I love Oddworld and i loved Abes Oddysee and Abes Exoddus, but overall Soulstorm is just a good game, which probably was to ambitious for the Unity Engine. Nonetheless i am looking foreward to the third installment of the oddworld quintology and i hope that the next game will get back more of the original dark Oddworld atmosphere and charm.

An old school game with a charismatic hero and the world, but a considerable amount of frustration that often has a cause not in the skill of the player, but in weird design. Especially placing checkpoints before a difficult passage in such a place, so that the player has to crafting and looting lockers again and again. A very different although outdated game in many regards. Movement can sometimes be quite unresponsive and the crafting system feels forced and totally unnecessary. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Starting with the story, it is a compeling story with very strong cinematics and very vivid characters.
Gameplay is boosted with a new crafting system that allows to play with elements (fire, smoke, etc.) which, in connection the enviromental materials (wood), allows to tackle each puzzle and situation in multiple ways. However, it is fair to say the controls are not as intuitive as you might expect, and you will find yourself dying several times because Abe (your character) did not react to your controls in times. It still plays like a 90s game.
Graphics are beautiful. Do not judge the game by the first levels. Once you get to the industrial levels, trains, etc. you will find a mix of lighnight effects, smoke, mist, beautiful backgrounds (fully rendered) and 3D camera movements that will create several ¨Wow¨ moments through the jorney.

Summing up, oddworld plays like tha classic, but boosts up the game with beautiful graphics, real time phisics and mechanics and a story with heart. Highly recomended to players who are looking for challenging games.

It starts with what felt like 30 minutes of unskippable cutscenes that assume you know everything about the folklore already. The entire first stage is a frantic rush that proves to be a difficult and annoying tutorial that only teaches you to hate the mechanics and save system. I tried to stay with it until I reached a section in the second stage where I died multiple times and realized that none of this was fun and I couldn't care less about the story. I really can't see how this gets better. The target points for certain items are so fine that I had to smash the square button while jogging back and forth to interact with things. Movement and controls are a little clunky. Graphics are fine but nothing special. I was BORED from the very beginning and the gameplay and story did nothing to keep me interested. It felt like all I was doing was tossing bottles to start fires (with excruciating mechanics) and then once the fires did what they needed to do, you have to toss more bottles (of water) to put the fire out!? Maybe it magically gets better later in the game, but if that's the case, the opening is a disaster of game design. Overall, it felt more like a poorly designed mobile game than a puzzle platformer. Got it for free via PS+ and couldn't play it. Would not recommend buying it. Expand

    Bad controls, and horrible movement
lighting is what saves the graphics but the graphics are still strange, the textures seem to be of low resolution

Awesome fun, plenty of puzzles, lots of nostalgia, everything I had hoped. It’s a tough game which I like as so many modern games serve no challenge at all. Looks great. Yes there’s the occasional bug, but nothing I found game breaking or too distracting. This is Oddworld magic and could teach modern developers some things about gameplay.

Oddworld Soulstorm feels so alive and incredible as they even explain how to play and what elements in the game world you can interact with as you begin the game. It feels like every turn something can pop out at you and there’s always new places to explore. I love the environment, and what many don’t know is that the first few stages don’t show off the true beauty in full graphic detail!!

Seriously, I had to remember that this game was about an somewhat feeble and scared character in a creepy world that’s out to abuse and destroy him. When I did get there, I began enjoying the game immensely. Even more so when I discovered that I wasn’t totally helpless, as I began to gain awesome new abilities that play with the games physics and puzzles. I could run and hide but I could also fight back.

That’s what makes this game so amazing. It does a superb job of balancing your experience with Abe with the atmosphere and the gameplay to really male you feel for him and his fellow Mudokons as you make your way through to freedom from physical and psychological slavery.

Give it a shot. Get passed the first level or so and begin unlocking new items and abilities. You’ll enjoy the way they play off each other to provide diverse ways of getting through obstacles. Anyway, great game. It’s only slight drawbacks have been slight personal issues with the controls not doing what I want at times - for ex. when jumping to grab on to a ledge. And I didn’t like the way you were just told that the bad guy had found you, had you cornered, which meant you were in a bind that you never actually saw Abe get into. Like you beat a level and then the next level you’re just found by the enemy and have to flee. This feels like a time and budget constraint - so I don’t take too much away for it. I just would have liked a bit smoother transition.

The above are dialog excerpts from two cutscenes early in the game. They're paraphrased, but still capture their repetitiveness, triteness and Abe's cowardice and around 20 points lower IQ. Abe turned from dimwitted hero into a whiny idiot. The charm from Exoddus is all but gone.

Oh and by the way, Greeters no longer detect you by motion but simply zap you as soon as you come into their range, requiring you to dumpster dive for washing powder to craft smoke bombs to get past them. I wish I was joking.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ever since New n Tasty, i wasn't expecting this game to be great, though i didn't expect them to do abe like this, the removal of single step space movement, or square by square, however you call it, from the ps1 game, really made both games rather tedious for movement in general, bugs aside, the monkey bars sections are very hard to manoeuvre without dying, you can't possess glukkons, paramites and scrabs are extinct for who knows why so that just leaves Sligs, ground/flying. There was talk about 17 levels in the game but that was reduced to about 11, the story beats were very off and ultimately led to a very lackluster ending that can be summed up to "wait another 5 years to find out what abe saw" (theres 3 actual endings), maybe i just expected an abes exodus remake and ended up over expecting, but with the lack of wildlife, no Elum type thing, no farting, i just found it worse than New n Tasty, the crafting and gathering was also a turn off, just annoying and doesn't feel abes, it feels like Lorne Lanning was trying to recapture his 90s success of an old classic and it's failed both times to hit the mark, the game is Soulless.

I don't recomend it if you're looking for an abes exudus remake, buy it if you just want to turn your brain off and have some mindless fun with a story that's pretty seperate from the original 2, it's deffo for you.

I'd ultimately recomend emulating Exodus though, Steam version is a totally ruined port so you can't even change aspect ratio or control scheme whatsoever.

The take away from this is being good at making Ps1 games does not equate with being good at making Ps5 games.

Once those issues are fixed it'll be more pleasant but at the moment it's just irritating.

This sequel is a great place to start for the upcoming quintology. Challenging puzzles, great atmosphere, dark. This is a great return for our Mudokon friend who has had a 7 year absence from games since New n Tasty came out in 2014.

We really need to support this great independent developer. The universe it created is so exciting and rich and unique. If we can push this on the charts,

We really need to support this great independent developer. The universe it created is so exciting and rich and unique. If we can push this on the charts, it’ll mean we will get lots of the intended new games that are planned in a quintology. A franchise that started on the PS1, and is back again and needs all of us. It’ll mean we get more independence for them to not need huge publishers to finance their ambitions. And that’s a win for all of us, as they’re a breath of fresh air in the industry.

it is so good to play Abe again. Soulstorm is a blast. Old school mixed with new gameplay mechanics. The continuation of Abe's story. I cannot wait for the next game to see how it plays out. It is an evolution over other platformers.

An entertainment game, clever, full of good ideas, and in the end, to be entertained is what matters right?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Spoilers for first 3 missions.

The first 2 chapters are great, but then it gets Way too hard even on Easy, you can no longer go past the Blimp section with the mortars, you are stuck there, can't takeover sligs because you get shot by Mortars, running through it doesn't work because now you have Sligs behind you whenever you spawn at the checkpoint midway. you jump up to avoid fire from behind... then when you try to take over the slig above you get attacked by Mortar fire again. this is on Easy by the way, i was playing on Normal, but changed it for the Blimp mission. I doubt changing Difficult will help you in this game.

Now that is out of the way, for the first 2 chapters, it was Great, the Visuals were not the best, but were pretty good, the Voice Acting was top notch especially Toby and Alf but that part was just from the E3 Trailer, so nothing new. the Controls are bad, forced to use the Analog stick, but it isn't very accurate. when you get to the Slap mines... worse than the original game, you press directly as it turns green, and you die. the sound design is superb though. Framerate has issues, constantly stutters at times. There is some bugs that cause a bright white line when you spawn in. 2nd mission you find Alf standing there inside another Mudokon.

I grew up with Abe's Oddysee on PS1, and this seems a lot harder than thanks to crap level design.

This is a triumphant return to Oddworld. Soulstorm does fantastic things with Abe's story and shows some real advances with the developer's designs. Utterly excellent look, and a world that oozes with consumerist evils make this the definitive new Oddworld experience. There are absolutely no obstacles to heartily recommending this game to all players new and old. Can't wait to see what comes next!

Soulstorm is old school and it’s for you to decide whether that’s a flaw or not. You can definitely feel the spirit of the old Oddworlds, but for me the devs were to conservative. I would really welcome a touch of madness, some variety to spice thing up. However, if a solid, challenging retro platformer is what you’re looking for – go for it, you’ll be pleased. [06/2021, p.50]

While that means Soulstorm works - accidentally or otherwise - as a metaphor for the struggle of the working classes, all that toil rarely makes for a particularly engaging game. [Issue#359, p.112]
