This new iteration of the game, developed by Mr. Nutz Studio (Toki, Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All!), will invite players to go back to the Prehistoric Age and embody Prehistoric Men, ready to do anything to save the women of their tribe.

More than a remake of the arcade version, Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja will include a handful of new features such as an original adventure mode containing brand new levels!

It's hard to know what audience Microids is targeting with New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja. Old players who have already turned the original game around? Despite the talent of Philippe Dessoly who reminds us that 2D is eternal, asking them to drop 40€ for an "Extend" mode and a few additional screens is abused. As for neophytes fed at checkpoints, automatic saves and other “Easy” modes, there is a chance that they will quickly become discouraged as New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja imposes learning through pain.

New Joe and Mac: Caveman Ninja just barely passes as a decent remake of the original. Making gameplay mechanics fit the new visuals better and fixing sound problems really needs to be top priority, possibly with a few update patches. The Hunger/Health meter also really needs to be adjusted as not to deplete as fast as it does here. It’s definitely not horrible overall, but also doesn’t live up to the fun factor of the original. If I had to break everything down here, I would say this release largely feels unfinished. In it’s current form, it’s good, but it can, and should be, much better. I would recommend waiting for a few quality patches or a price drop before diving into this one.

As a fan of the original Joe and Mac, I must say that NEW Joe & Mac - Caveman Ninja is a huge disappointment as it features frustrating difficulty, floaty gameplay, and it's even missing some core elements that made the classic arcade game stand out as special.

An underwhelming remake of the famous Data East arcade game Joe & Mac that only offers up a new graphical appeal (and it’s not that appealing) and a new soundtrack. [Not Recommended]
