Brutal, relentless, and deeply unsettling, Labyrinth of the Demon King is a hardcore experience inspired by PS1 classics. Its blurry, dark aesthetic shines with smooth, modernized gameplay, though it falters at times due to occasional lack of responsiveness.

Ultimately, Labyrinth of the Demon King is a canny mixture of aggressive posturing and subtly accessible mechanics. I was surprised at how tense my experience was, despite the relative ease with which I traversed its halls. Labyrinth of the Demon King manages to capture the abrasive essence of titles like Shadow Tower and Silent Hill but in a compact, easily digestible package. The developer’s ability to achieve this balance is commendable and, as the samurai sits drinking matcha tea in the labyrinth’s one refuge, I am filled with a familiar warmth.

Labyrinth of the Demon King from developer J.R. Hudepohl harkens back to a simpler survival horror time and recreates most of the right elements that reflect that era and genre. While it’s strong in story, atmosphere, and creepiness, it falls short with its mechanics.

Labyrinth of the Demon King is a nostalgic and pummelling entry into the survival horror/dungeon crawling genre. The Feudal Japan setting and atmospheric level design sets itself apart from its contemporaries but doesn't quite sustain its thrills in story or puzzles. Whilst the combat is rigid and slightly unfair, it's a core element to it's differing approach of retro style PS1 horror.

Labyrinth of the Demon King impresses with its crushing atmosphere and rewarding combat but falls victim to a dearth of novel ideas in its latter half.

Labyrinth of the Demon King is a short but intense experience that delivers exactly what it promises: a dark, atmospheric dive into a revenge-driven journey full of challenges.

With modern elements of roguelike games, Labyrinth of the Demon King seeks to emulate the aesthetics and feel of the classic survival horror games from the days of the first Playstation, but fails by only partially appropriating the best of their characteristics, both in the development of a shallow storyline and in the tedious gameplay that lacks purpose.
