Generic & mediocre overly easy action game unworthy of the Final Fantasy brand. Minimal at best RPG mechanics, generic action gameplay, lack of spells & anything present in games from the same franchise from over 20 years ago.

Final Fantasy XVI is not a good game. It is representative of a cynical, lowest-common-denominator approach to game development--the ultimate expression of flash over substance.

I've been playing FF games since the NES, and have enjoyed the development of the series over time. The recent action-hybrid system in FF7 Remake, for example, was a particularly good innovation that built upon the successes of the past. XVI, however, abandons the past in order to chase after an entirely different gaming audience. The developers have betrayed their own fanbase, cynically concluding both that their old fans will buy the game anyway, and the new audience will be bigger.

The problem is that XVI doesn't even succeed at what it is trying to be. As an action game it lacks combat depth, and it is very rudimentary and simplistic. Anything even slightly challenging would frustrate the so-called game journalists and lead to lower reviews, so players are treated to the most repetitive, basic combat available in any modern action game, paired with a complete absence of difficulty. The summon battles are even more unsophisticated, playing out like a two-button rail shooter. The very basic QTEs shoe-horned in throughout the game add to the sense that the developers have no new ideas.

In addition, the developers seem to have cottoned on to the idea that 'mature' means copy-pasting from Game of Thrones. After all, GoT is popular, just like action games. Sometimes, the blatant ripping off of GoT content is so ridiculous as to be laughable, but mostly it comes across as extraordinarily cringe-inducing. This would not be such a big deal if the game were not convinced that it is an HBO miniseries instead of a game. Be prepared to actually 'play' the game for only 15 minutes out of every hour spent with it. The cutscenes are continuous and relentless. But given how dreadful the combat is, perhaps the interminable cutscenes will be a welcome relief.

Pacing is simply awful, and the towns themselves are reduced to linear paths with NPCs along the side, to say nothing of the dungeons which are even less interesting. There are no places to explore, no treasures to be found in hidden areas, and the sidequests are creatively bankrupt, straight out of the WoW playbook. The storyline goes to pieces in the latter half of the game, and the final boss and conclusion are ridiculous and unfulfilling. The game adds a more challenging NG+ mode after completion, but it's hard to believe anyone would voluntarily play through it again after knowing that the latter portion of the game offers nothing.

The music and voice acting are both solid and even good in places. Neither is quite top-shelf but both are serviceable, let down by writing, pacing, and setting more than by execution. But these few bright points are obviously not enough to carry the game.

In the end, a lot of money spent on buying favourable impressions might lead to some people buying this game unaware of just what they're going to get. But, if they've any sense, they won't make that mistake twice: this game really will be their *Final* Fantasy.

This is not a RPG, there are no party members, the only different roles are what skills are equipped which is used in any type of action/adventure game these days, Square Enix has lost what made Final Fantasy special which can be seen by it losing ground to other less known brands like Monster Hunter, Persona Series. Those games have focused on gameplay and being innovative instead of graphics and being like everyone else cough Devil May Cry cough. Also did not enjoy all the needless cutscenes which should only be there for the major story elements, for example this game has over 20 hours of cutscenes vs FFX's 6 hours which did it alot better and more meaningful. Areas are pretty and monsters clearly FF14 monster designs. Makes the world feel "Final Fantasy"

Not for People who expect this to be a 2D Bird-perspective JRPG from the 90s. Those times are over. Theres MANY!! rpgmaker games you can buy on steam if you want that experience - or beat the ones you havent beaten from your childhood.

Its a 9/10 as a game for me. As a Final Fantasy it would probably get a bit less since I am not the biggest fan of the game of thrones storyline, but as a game its solid and fun to play. Keeps me going and wants me to see the story to an end.

Edit couple days later: OK, its a 10/10. Game becomes better and better and better and there is not much I would like this game to be more. Its exactly what a Story driven Adventure should be. GOOD GAME

FFXVI might be a good game and it could have been beautiful but its image reconstruction turned out extremely ugly and the game stutters as hell. In 2023, there are too many great games running smoothly out there, so there is no need to play such a stutter fest. I will sell it again. Too bad.

    - fantastic music
    - good sound effects and voice acting
    - pretty cutscenes (a good thing in this movie game for sure)

    The cons:

    - combat is childlike easy
    - loading/popins

    - uneven frame refresh in open world

In reality, you should want to keep turning this game on and playing... But you may never finish it or find the will to turn it on.

Lets be frank: this isn't a game. It's a game of thrones ripoff cinematic story with a few action combat scenes that you control.

There's basically no exploration. You maybe play 1/7th of the actual the game. The rest is cut scenes. Combat is over simplified... So much that it's impossible to die. Weirdly, you can make the game even easier by adding newbie rings... No clue why you would.

There's so bad arse cut scenes with some big things that you basically hit r1 or square.... And these cut scenes battles take WAY TOO LONG.

If I have to hit x then hold r2 to open another door I'm going to throw the game in the trash. Any reason a dev does something like this is: they are daft and lack any knowledge of gaming.

Equipment is stupid- you just buy new crap everytime you go to a town.. no real variety or even a need to update your gear. It's thoughtless. Yes, the graphics are good 90% of the time. Sometimes the character models drop textures - super weird.

    Voice acting is mostly good....

The graphics are great and the story is alright, but that's all it has going for it.

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons. The combat system is not nearly as deep

While the graphics are impressive, much (not all) of the aesthetics are quite boring when compared to older entries. Many very standard medieval buildings. So standard they might come from an online asset pack. Some vistas are great, as well as some dungeons.

The combat system is not nearly as deep as people make it out to be. Normal enemies are a cake-walk, so while you might come up with combos, they're dead before you even finish them. Boss enemies generally can't be juggled, so they can't be comboed. It basically becomes a game of dodge, attack, dodge, attack. Initially you'll use high stagger moves, then when staggered you start off with a multi-hit move to build up combo and then spam all the skills to do the highest damage. In the end it's just a rotation. It's fun, but we've seen better.

Side-quests are boring, the game would be better without them. Old FF games did not really have that many side-quests and what was there was more interesting in terms of characters and reward.

Items are also useless for the most part, which in turn means exploration is meaningless. Yay, more sharp fangs! There are no status effects, so no items to help with that, only a few potions can be brought along and usually they'll drop them right in front of the boss arena. You just never actually have to prepare for anything.

Eikon fights are all about the spectacle. The actual gameplay is worthless.

I'm baffled by how positive the reception has been to a game that has such terrible game design. If you strip away the spectacle, the game itself has nothing going for it anymore. In fact, I think you'll be having more fun just watching the game than playing it. It would just be better as a movie.

It's not a JRPG by any measure, and by that I mean that it isn't even an Action JRPG. I have never seen Youtube astroturf a game quite like this one. The presentation is very pretty (despite terrible motion blur and an iffy framerate), and the story is very interesting (so far, I'm ten hours in). The gameplay is terrible though.

You would think that most of the people giving this game a 10 or 9 workers for Sony, this game is just a large CGI movie, you get maybe 5 minutes of gameplay and then 10 minutes of cutscenes, it’s extremely annoying, the dodge system is terrible when you do get into a boss fight, when they said this game has cutscenes longer than the entire lord of the rings trilogy, THEY WEREN”T LYING.

The story is intriguing, but unfortunately the game is rather shallow. The battles can be won by just spamming a few buttons and then unleashing a special move, there are no status ailments, weapon crafting seems to have been an after thought and there isn't a huge variation between the different "stances". Hell I even loved 15 but this, this thing has been so hard to force myself to get through. So, whoever made this game wrote a decent story, made it real pretty, and then it almost feels like they slapped an alpha version of a barebones ARPG on top of it. You’re genuinely only ever a few fights or a couple hundred yards at most away from the next cutscene, it’s frankly jarring just how often they take control away from the player, and half the time it’s to say nothing. And the world is so empty. Now by empty I mean the bestiary is like 38-40 creatures and over half of that is Eikons, some important characters, an owl you only see for a couple minutes, and then the other half are enemies. So essentially when you’re walking around any of these on rails or even semi open stages you’re going to be fighting the same 5-6 enemies for the majority of the game. And there’s geniunely nothing to do except advance the main story. The shinies on the ground on the map? It’s about 2-5 gil, a potion (of which you can only have 7 of ever), or 1-3 crafting mats. Wooden chest on the map? It’s about 100 gil or about 20 crafting mats. Finish a side quest? Oh yeah crafting mats. Boss time oh yeah!! You are rewarded with crafting mats. Major plot enemy or Eikon fight?!?! You guessed it! More crafting mats!!! And thats assuming you can get through all the QTEs they put into every Eikon fight to hide loading times that literally consist of either “press square” or “press R1” and you have like 10 seconds to do it so no rush. And those QTEs will about take care of the last half of their Hp so don’t worry. Did I mention crafting mats? Because you literally barely ever need to use it. You are 100% guaranteed to get the next best weapon from a mat dropped by last chapters boss. There are no status effects, no elemental weaknesses, which I feel like they forgot. Because enemies cast stuff like bad breath, poison mist, etc., you get several elemental spells, but all they do is damage, again no status effects, and in no greater amount than any other spell. It’s….pretty, and the story really tries to stay relevant minus some very weird points it REALLY wants to drive home and some massive plot holes, but it has some really good scenes for sure. But this game only feels like a slightly interactive visual novel with some good boss fights. Better to watch a stream or a YouTube vid because it really just feels like a GoT fan fic movie. Please don’t waste your money. Expand

Not everything is bad if course : Combat is pretty fun and at first glance the visuals are beautiful. I like the art style & the darker tone if this game The cutscenes are of high quality.

However I can't recommend this game. The world is dull and empty, the story gets weird halfway through, MMO-like side quests aren't fun and the loot system is very questionable. It feels a bit like "Game of Thrones : Devil May Cry Edition" but it's very different from previous Final Fantasy games. This game should have gotten a different title.

The performance mode of this game is atrocious : The exploration sequences are a stutterfest barely touching 60fps and dropping into the 30s. In combat resolution drops to 720p and the game becomes very blurry - while still not being able to maintain 60fps. The only way to enjoy this game is in 30fps quality mode.

I should have avoided this release. All those good reviews a few days ago tricked me into giving it a try. I wonder what Square Enix spent to get such misleading scores...

And it's biggest problem is the patronising lip service it's trying to show it's older fans. If this game scrapped the shallow and awful character upgrade system and concentrated on being an action game with no rpg elements at all it may have been better. I'll end with this. For those of use who loved final fantasy and adored the depth of its upgrade systems and strategical pseudo-turned based combat, this game is not for you. Love to you all

I got baited by the demo, which was by far the best part of the game. It seems like the game took the worst parts of FF14 which are the endless mind numbing fetch quests and threw them into FF16. Go talk to that guy and go bring this to this guy/girl. Some boss fights are great but some others are way over the top.

Also where are the RPG elements in this game, where are the choices?

There are much better ARPGs out there, God of War and Witcher come to mind witch much better systems all around. This game was a huge disappointment.

I think this might be the worst Final Fantasy game in the series. The storyline is excellent and it grips you right from the start but that's all it has going for it.

The game feels like a few easy battles getting in the way of cut scenes. Everyone that loves it seems to go on about the story ... someone needs to create a YouTube vid of all the cutscenes, as that's really all there is to the game. Everything else seems like a feeble distraction. This is not an RPG. And if you want a good action game there are far better ones out there.

+ Visually the game looks great! Effects, details, the lightning. It all looks great!
    + Story seems interesting.
+ Main character is one of the best in FF entries.
    + Soundtrack is great.

+/- Goes to combat. While I like it visually it lacks a lot of the strategy that made old FF games great. Stuff like elemental affinities etc.

    - Sub par side quests, honestly most of them have just been bad.
    - The gear and grafting is pretty bland. Hopefully it improves later on in the game.
    - Story while interesting, has some pacing issues-
    - The biggest minus is the lack of RPG elements usually found in Final Fantasy games! The game direction has gone a lot to the action route and I cannot say I am the biggest fan of this decision.
    - Performance mode needs some ironing.

Final Rating will be a solid 7 from me.

Not a bad game at all! I applaud the developers and Square for trying something different in this long running franchise. But sadly, FF16 seems to have taken some steps backwards on certain aspects ( Mainly the RPG mechanics ) while trying to innovate the series. But the story seems interesting enough even with its pacing issues and the combat while lacking the usual FF stuff is fun if you like Devil May Cry/Kingdom Hearts style combat and at the same time is visually appealing to push me to finish the game!

    Happy gaming!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. HISTORIA:

I'd say it looks nice, but that's only in cutscenes or as a facade from the sparky, flashy particle effects.

There is such a ludonarrative dissonance between your character being so powerful in combat, but a complete pushover as all of the NPCs constantly degrade you. I don't want to help these people, I don't want to save this awful world. They try to ground this game in some sort of medieval reality, but then Clive jumps around doing goofy combos like Dante from Devil May Cry.

Some of the cutscenes are breathtaking and the story has some good beats. But that's really about it. And that's the kind of thing you can get for a $12 movie ticket, not a $70 game.

I wanted to love this game. I've been a longtime fan of the series. Final Fantasy 7 remains my favorite game of all time. It honestly pains me to see what the series has become.

They have stripped away so much of what makes a Final Fantasy game a Final Fantasy game. And for what? They announced that we don't like turn-based or ATB combat anymore, that the series was "too sci-fi", etc.

They have stripped away so much of what makes a Final Fantasy game a Final Fantasy game. And for what? They announced that we don't like turn-based or ATB combat anymore, that the series was "too sci-fi", etc. That's all news to me, because those were all the things I loved about the series. I loved the cyberpunk or steampunk settings of 7, 8, 10, and 13. FFX had the best combat in the series IMO. But we apparently don't like those things anymore.

And apparently we don't like good storytelling either. I feel like I'm going insane when I see the praise for this story. Have the standards for narrative fallen so far? These writers have never heard of "show, don't tell". Because half the story is quite literally told through Active Time Lore. And the rest of it is ridiculously heavy handed and dumbed down. DO YOU GET IT? PEOPLE TREAT BEARERS LIKE SECOND CLASS CITIZENS? DO YOU GET IT?!??!?

Hire an actual writer or two. The pacing of the narrative is horrific. So many of the sidequests are pure bloat and could have been cut entirely. The side quests that are all worthwhile and actually add to character depth and narrative occur in the last few hours of the game, long after you might have stopped caring. Put those side quests earlier in the game. There were so many narrative hits that didn't resonate because I was *told* to care about these characters when I should have been *shown*. That's what the great games of this series did so well. We cared when events happened in 7 and 10 because those characters were developed and we got those narrative bits. In FFXVI, we read Active Time Lore and get told about various things we should care about.

Story isn't the only thing that has suffered relative to previous games in the series. There are about 10 different enemies in this game, all with the same attacks. Compare that to the bestiary of 7 or 8. We're going backwards. Combat is laughably easy, and there is nothing that qualifies as a super boss that ranks with the likes of Emerald/Ruby Weapon, Nemesis, Penance, Ozma, etc.

This is literally half of a Final Fantasy game and people are praising it to high heaven. To each their own I guess. I just feel like we should be adding to what has been established, not stripping away content. I don't even think this is the best RPG released in the last two years. Star Ocean Divine Force was unironically better with 1/10th of the budget.

Bring back Tabata. FFXV was a game actually trying something and was a good blueprint for the series. XVI feels like a half-hearted attempt at trying to copy other games and TV shows.

This is not a game proud to be FF. Its a game actively running away from FF and almost feels ashamed to be FF. Never let Yoshi-P or CBU3 make another single-player game.

Final Fantasy game 16, marketed as a more mature entry in the franchise, explores a darker narrative and deviates from the traditional atmosphere associated with the series.

    Atmosphere:
Diverging from the established Final Fantasy ambiance, the game ventures into a notably darker tone reminiscent of the Devil May Cry series. While attempts are made to infuse the experience with familiar Final Fantasy elements through the use of music, it is evident that the game falls short in capturing the essence of a Final Fantasy atmosphere. The absence of the series' signature blend of light and dark, coupled with a scarcity of humour, is a departure from the established norm of what many expects. To sum it up, this game is just dark. While this is not a problem on it’s own, I think it’s worthwhile to mention that if you look for a balance between light and dark you will not find it here cause the innocence and humour is long gone.

    Exploration and Side Missions:
Regrettably, the game's exploration aspect lacks the depth and intrigue found in its predecessors. With a predominantly linear structure, any opportunities for open exploration are fleeting and fail to captivate players. Engaging in side missions yields little satisfaction, as they lack substance and fail to provide a meaningful contribution to the overall narrative. This lack of depth in both exploration and side missions detracts from the game's overall appeal and hampers player immersion.

    Gameplay:
Despite carrying an 18+ age rating, the game suffers from an unfortunate simplification of gameplay mechanics. Players may find themselves disappointed with the diminished challenge as combat devolves into repetitive button-mashing. Even after disabling various automated features, the game remains surprisingly easy, undermining the potential for a rewarding and engaging experience. Notably, the inclusion of a respawn system that grants substantial advantages upon failure further exacerbates the issue, trivializing encounters and undermining the sense of achievement.

    Conclusion:
While marketed as a Final Fantasy title for a more mature audience, the game struggles to maintain the intricate balance between light and dark that has defined the series. Departing from the franchise's established atmosphere, it falls short in incorporating the depth, exploration, and engaging side missions that fans have come to appreciate. The oversimplified gameplay mechanics, coupled with an overly forgiving respawn system, diminish the challenge and overall satisfaction derived from the game. As a result, one may question the decision to attach the Final Fantasy name to this installment, as it fails to authentically deliver the hallmark elements expected from the renowned franchise. Because of this I feel this descision was economically driven.

    - It also lacks of lightweight moments. I know it is suppose to be dark and mature. But this one is actually just joyless depressive and meaningless brutal.

    - the worlddesign is quite boring. Especially compared to FF14, FF12, FF10, FF9. It doesn't feel high fantasy for me at all. It's medieval with fantasy titbits here and there.

    - It has way too many and way too long cutscenes.

    - No actual party-system, elements and buffs/debuffs, minigames. Equipment is there but it doesn't matter much.

    - The so praised summon battles are cutscenes and quick time events for the most part. FF10, FF12, FF7R handled it a lot better, imo. Cool graphics just don't impress me as much as cool mechanics. Sorry.

    - I refuse corridor leveldesign like this. It's acceptable in FFX and FF7R because the combat was fun enough to carry it. But we are at NVME-SSD's now and I'm just tired of it.

    - And to make it even worse, they weren't able to make exploring worth it, even it's that linear already.

    - The sidequests are that bad, too.

It's basicly just an interactive movie with some hack and slash sequences, which feels way more backwards than FF13 at this point.

One point for the music though. Square never disappoint here.

The good things are the great graphics, the at least decent story and gameplay fells fresh.

But at the end of the day it feels like watching a movie with interactive options from time to time.

Big FF fan. Really loving the game. With the FF7 remake and this feel they are slowly coming back.
Just for context, I am at 26 hours into the game.
Really don't understand how people can give 0 when there are games like Redfall which is barely playable. Of course, there are some flaws just like any other game but I don't think is a game-breaker. Here are some Pro and Cons Pros -

Really don't understand how people can give 0 when there are games like Redfall which is barely playable. Of course, there are some flaws just like any other game but I don't think is a game-breaker.

Here are some Pro and Cons

    Pros
    - The combat feels great to play. It is simple but can be very complex if you wanted to be (Just like DMC)
    - The world and visual is candy to the eye.
    - Boss battles are epic and feel different each time.
    - Music is emotional and always fun to listen too
    - Story is more subjective, personally, I like it compared to other J-rpg or FF where they just make it weird and complex. Sometimes you have no clue what is going on. There are some points low points however it always ends with an epic boss battle.
    - If you love Lore and world-building. You have a Button during the story to further understand the context and a few NPCs teach you the history and the settings of the story. (Think every game should give one)

    Cons
    - Side Quest is pale compared to the main story quest. There are a few that is good later half of the game but most of them I really didn't care much about. Especially compared to the rewards, although there is a system introduced to the game later to help this.
    - The items in this game are mostly just small stats boosts. I found a few items which are interesting but not as epic compared to previous FF games. Which impacts the fun of exploration (At this point)

Other a few points other haters' comments I want to address
    - Yes technically you can finish the game with just one or two buttons and overall it's not the most challenging game. But I think is more about pulling off cool combos and moves to make you feel epic. If you are a DMC fan you will understand. As I mentioned above it can be very simple but complex if you wanted to be pulling off the crazy combo.
    - Not having party members. I think this can be hit or miss for some people. I personally feel the reason the combat feels very good is because it focuses on one character. But at the same time, this is a FF game. Having no party member feel less like a FF. But I don't think is a big issue since you get many Eikon abilities along the way to make you feel different.
    - There are some framerates drop here and there but its not a big deal. They say they are going to fix it soon anyway.

I played the game till the end. 45 hours.
I think this game tried to incorporate the best parts of other games and movies and it didn't all work.
There are some interesting parts. But it is by no means a masterpiece.
You can't count on 0 or 10 points for reviews. If you have played the game to the end, you will know that a score of 4 to 6 is about right.

The trailers and demo of this game lie to you making you think this game is fun. The concept of how summons work in the same way and sense of titan shifters in Attack on titan was so amazing with so much potential for story and gameplay elements, only for it to fall flat and end up being really stale and heavilyunderutilized. There are like 6 Eikon fights in the game, something that was shown off as a selling point of this game and theres like barely 2 hours worth of these fights, with arguable the best fight being the one you play in the demo. In terms of expericing the story, hearing the best music the game has to offer and expericing most of the best moments of the game, it could all be experienced in the demo. The side quest and the really really slow parts of the story is just so frustratingly boring, I ended up having to skip through most dialogue and just straight up skip entire side quest cute scenes, and I feel bad cause the voice work in this game is incredible with every VA doing an amazing job, but I just couldn't be bother to care with how slow and tedious the writting could be. The story and environments are so uninteresting, oh boy I sure do love walking through grass area 1 and unlocking grass area 2 and then heading to boring brown ugly desert with nothing of real substance to do in any of these places, its a shame this game limits itself to these boring uninspiring locations and not even making them fun in any way with stuff to do or what not but thats okay its the best this small indie company can do with a IP thats not that well known so they really had to limit themselves on what they could do. And the gameplay gets so stale so DAMN quickly, I love pressing square 5 times and then pressing one of 2 abilites I have at the end and calling that a COMBO, maybe I should spicy it up after the 100th time of doing this and press triangel imbetween each time I press square, whoa! now this is cool action game gameplay. Don't even get to control a different party member or change my weapon at all, forced to play the exact same from start to finish with never any real combos just **** ability moves that like pretend to be combo moves but they're just extra moves you press every now and then.
THAT DIRECTOR 100% LIED TO **** EVERYONE
Ryota Suzuki, the Goddamn DMC director, you cannot tell me ff16 is your personal masterpiece when this **** isn't even in the same league of DMC combat, you sir are a liar and need to rethink what your personal masterpiece is cause this is far from it.

Look I really wanted this to be good, the trailers and demo really painted a picture that this game would truly be a masterly beautiful final fantasy game, and I could excuse most of the problems I have with this game if it kept the same enegry and motion that the demo had with obviosuly more then a pathetic number of 6 Eikon fights and just been more creative and exicting with your story Goddamn it your final fantasy with unlimited themes and potential WHY are you limiting yourself like this.

    Still better then ff15

    Battle system:
All you have to do is press a single button to attack an enemy. Sometimes you have to dodge, but most of the time you can't even see that the enemy is going to hit you because of the ridiculous amount of effects. Most of the combat mechanics are unusable or simply useless. Pressing a square button does 99% of the fighting.

    Optimization:
It is just terrible. Despite average graphics, it can't even maintain a stable 40 fps. The developers are just brаinlеss idiоts. As for 2023, it is simply unplayable. Even though they released the game on a single platform, they didn't manage to give it a decent optimization.

    Conclusion:
It is a pity that nowadays developers dare to release such low quality gаrbаgе. Maybe the story is much better than the rest, but now I doubt I will finish the game.

Not to mention the generic medieval European’d world. It’s just not captivating like past Final Fantasies. Praying and hoping no future Final Fantasy would miss the mark this badly. I’ve had much more fun with FF15 and I’m not exaggerating. And FF15 was like my least favourite Final Fantasy.

Tales of Arise had depth to the combat and many different ways to play. I was shocked when I saw how overly simplistic the gear and skill tree was. I mean, the gear is nothing more than a stat stick, nothing promotes any unique style of play or gameplay modifier. Honestly, I’m disappointed. Find that cool new sword? Well, the only difference between this one and the last one is +10 attack. And no, you can’t mod it with any sort of interesting perk or status effect. The most recent Tales had multiple party members and even then each individual had a broader skill tree to choose from. As an rpg fan, what am I supposed to make of this? Is this *enough* for an ff mainline game for you guys? Hell, even DMC5 has more depth than this. I understand that the ff franchise is predominately known for its great narrative direction, but they've always coupled it with excellent and oftentimes very sophisticated and complex gameplay elements. Remember the gambit system in ff12? What we see here is a gimped dmc5 and a tacked on stagger system that was ripped from the corpse of ff13 and stitched onto this. Given the glowing reviews, i was expecting just so much more, and instead i got one of the most barebones gameplay offerings ive seen in a long time. Save yourself some cash and just watch the cutscenes online, its basically the same experience. $70 for a movie is a bit too rich for me.

it's a 5. Most mid game ive ever played. Guess we'll try again in another 8 years. damn...makes me feel sad just thinking about it.

The skill corollary is very poor and very little customizable, making the experience quite tedious and repetitive.
Although this is a game, unfortunately there is very little enjoyment of this aspect. FFXVI is a beautiful feature film with wonderful visual effects and excellent music, but which lacks real moments of pure gameplay, weak in the lack of RPG elements that made the franchise unique. The party system does not exist and the only character you have a minimum of control over is the protagonist, making the various secondary characters mere puppets of presence.
Grinding and side missions are useless, you can easily follow the main quest alone to get to the ending without too much difficulty.
We go back to the origins with the lore based on crystals in a medieval world, but it is not enough to save a botched and disappointing plot, from many points of view. The villains are empty and without any real purpose and the secondary characters are only fit to the small portion of the story they experience first hand, making them immediately forgettable.
The pace of the game starts fast and pressing, and then disappears behind very long corridors that lead nowhere, endless and unskippable cinematics where nothing is added to the plot and where not even the last game elements that are presented (such as bounties) can save the game from its bitter and disappointing ending.
Overall, only the environmental lore (which however is rendered useless in its final explanation) and the music are saved. I wish I could say the storyline is a strong point, but sadly that's not the case. It could have been much more, but instead...

Technically, both graphics and sound are top tier and the art-style really matchs with the vibe the story and world of the game, more on the darker side for sure.

Combat is super fun and engaging, is not a hard game by any means but you still enjoy very much using the eikons skills and is super satisfying. I never went into a fight and felt bored, even deleting trash mobs is FUN.
They really nailed the customization and build, not making a sphere grid of hundreds of useless nodes just a few and very significant, game-changing choices.

Side content, specially quests start really bad but they got a lot better adding a lot the context and message the mains story tries to send. I never felt like i was doing it just for completionist sake, instead it was interesting to learn more about the game and characters.

Really solid game and my personal goty pick so far.

For me this is already in the Top 3 of my all Time Favorit Final Fantasy's after 7 on one and 10 on two. It is one of the best Games i ever played in over 20 Year's as a Gamer. The best Game for me since Red Read Redemption in 2018 and the best Final Fantasy since 10 in 2001. Absolut amazing and i love it. Can't wait to play New Game + again.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
