Before anyone tells me I should lower the framerate turn off the HDR or Go to performance mode, why? Why should we have to accept it in a sub par form? We have spent over £500 for the console so why can't it run the game how it's supposed to? There isn't another version of the PS5 which is more powerful so pray tell what are we meant to do? We should expect better from a cold industry who thinks it's acceptable to release a game that is to powerful for the console to handle. The storyline is good but fairly obvious what's going to happen, feels a lot like game of thrones which to me is a good thing. The game mechanics aren't as good as 15 but it has got some interesting changes. Id say give the game a chance if you have the patience to either play it at a sub par level or have a air conditioner blowing directly onto your ps5 or like playing it and it crashing intermittently (Usually during a 20 min cutscene at the 17th minute) Expand

I’ve been a fan of the series since childhood and it’s greatly shaped my creative journey, when 13’s sequels and 15 came out I wanted to love them but they had such blaring issues that I couldn’t ignore despite feeling the series was the epitome of story driven media. However from start to finish of 16 I was invested in the world, characters, battles and ESPECIALLY music. The game only allowing control of Clive isn’t completely new for final fantasy as most games had a locked over world character and the original 15 was this way. Clive is and is surrounded by realistic characters that aren’t overly virtuous, flawed, and likeable. The Eikonic battles drag a bit at times but the diversity in gameplay and spectacle make them each separately spectacular, and the combat is satisfying and fun to play around with. This game is such a love letter to the series from the initial pose the Dragoon is in similar to the FF4 logo, the battle theme from 8 being remixed into the battle theme here, the overall Final Fantasy musical theme being incorporated into a few songs, and even the voice acting being some of the best in any game with none of the constant gasps or grunts shoehorned into very basic movements like opening something, or moving a particular way that was littered in 15 and 13. From start to finish I was the wide eyed kid again that experienced FF7 for the first time wondering how a presentation could be so beautiful and compelling. This game will stay with me likely for the rest of my life along with GOW2018/RAG, Sekiro, and FF7. Extremely thankful to have experienced this project. Expand

It has a wide range of characters which are likeable, and are not merely black and white. Sure, you’ll hate one person or another, but you can understand their reasoning for doing so, and it can feel like the world is moving whether you’re there or not, and not that the world is revolving around you that can be the case in other games.
Combat is fluid and highly engaging, with an extremely high degree of customization available, to be able to fit to your playstyle. There has never been a combat situation in this game that was not fun.
The side quests, which unlock as you progress through the story, are inoffensive at worst, but offer unique insights into people’s lives in the world of Valisthea, or offer some unique lore that you wouldn’t get otherwise.
Environments are stunning to look at and are filled with things to marvel at. At some points when exploring I did note that some frames were dropped (I played on Frame-rate mode), but as I was exploring, and frames never dropped in combat where it mattered, this was a non-issue for me.
Finally, the music, I believe, to be in a class of its own. Masayoshi Soken has knocked it out of the park with every ambient piece of music, embodying the zones overall feel. Character themes are on yet another level, leitmotifs abound and calling back to previous scenes, it is purely a joy to listen to.
Overall, I think this is a definite recommendation, and one that I believe will stand the test of time and be remembered for years to come.

Critic score seems overly generous. I desperately wanted XVI to achieve perfect scores, demo raised optimism, but awarding 100% is undeserved (exaggerated fandom?). Having experienced XIV from initial launch to remake, I knew what to expect from Yoshi P & MMO team. Turned out concerns were warranted, but they still managed to build a superb game probably ranking 6th amongst my favourite Final Fantasies.

    Music 10/10
Great & grew on me throughout: catchy, suspenseful, atmospheric & fits the moment more often than not. Never quite hitting heights of Uematsu’s genius — a tough ask as he’s in his own untouchable tier. Soken meanwhile is top of also-rans, demonstrating consistency, versatility & production quality, albeit surprisingly quirky in parts.

    Combat 7/10
Shift was a big talking point I found interesting with plenty of choices on the skill tree, but I soon figured you could get away with ability spam & there’s very little challenge or strategy required if keeping equipment upgraded, even for S rank hunts. It becomes somewhat automatic & akin to MMO-style “cooldown” combat with a faster pace. Very flashy and responsive with a lot happening on screen that it’s almost a firework show with numbers plastered everywhere. Often difficult to see the character models. It definitely keeps you busy but a lack of status effects, item variety & proper magic spells simplifies things greatly. I have seen videos of people performing “sick combo’s” that flow seamlessly, but that’s completely unnecessary & requires you to work harder for the same outcome unless you are concerned with number output. FF7R has the upper hand in this department, offering a mix of action & turn-based, being overall the more interesting approach & can be played like an action game if the player chooses. I personally prefer having control of multiple party members with different styles.

    Graphics & Visuals 9/10
The world of Valisthea is beautiful, grand & unexpectedly breathtaking mixed in with a few other drab landscapes. Overall visuals are of a high quality & warrant next-gen status. Performance mode is so inconsistent that I unusually went all-in on fidelity. Concerns of linearity are addressed early on as areas don’t appear claustrophobic without being fully open world. It maintains the right balance for story focus while allowing exploration as each region opens up. One of the main issues is that exploration is largely unrewarding in terms of items & gear. Loot in general is lacking and underwhelming, including most quest rewards. Some iffy animations.

MINOR SPOILER: summons (Eikons) take the stage in a new way & these battles sometimes overshadow anything I’ve seen in gaming thus far, even eclipsing Marvel movies.

    Gameplay 6/10
The is an apparent lack of traditional RPG elements where stats are concerned. Everything has been streamlined or even “dumbed-down” as some might say, possibly to expand appeal to newer fans without being overwhelming. Equipment choices are somewhat limited if you enjoy different builds & the next upgrade is almost always available to increase the few numbers that matter. Accessories offer time reductions to certain ability usage & damage increases, though this is barely relevant in the grand scheme of things. There are also ones that increase item potency, which are plentiful anyway if you can time dodges well.

    Characters 9/10
Interesting & I cared deeply about most of the core group. Voice acting is performed well, but opinions may vary depending on taste (I did not think Ralph Ineson as Cid fit the character despite being familiar with the actor beforehand — it might have even suited Hugo more who I found dramatically awful).

    Story 9/10
Fantastic, satisfying & shocking in parts, I was intrigued & excited for then next segment to arrive. The pacing is questionable as there are large lulls in between. My main gripe is that there are far too many inexcusably uninteresting side quests. How anyone can find fetch quests to be their idea of fun is baffling. Luckily they can be skipped entirely unless you want some extra rewards from the ??? points they give. However, I would advise to not miss the important quests having a plus icon. Or, in some cases if you want extra world-building lore then they’re also worthwhile. Being a completionist I was extremely bored by the halfway point. Most serve purely to extend the length of the game which could be half as many hours long without.

Major positive: fleshed-out world & lore. Fellow Game of Thrones fans will notice many similarities. Lore system is incredible & may spend lots of time reading archives (sadly locked behind an NPC!). Active time lore feature a nice addition — pausing during cutscenes becomes quite distracting if used too frequently.

TLDR; solid game w/ some inconsistencies, shallowness & genre clichés/tropes

Some story beats are pretty "tropy", mostly during the fight half of the game IMO. I've had some trouble getting into the gameplay at first, but it really clicked well around the 40% mark.

But as you can tell, those are mostly minor things, and ABSOLUTELY everything else was AT WORST average. AT WORST. Which means all the rest was good, or amazing. So yeah. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'd give this an 8.5 in general, but there's no option for that sadly. There's a great deal I enjoy about the game, and the best parts of FF16 have to do with its characters, dialogue, lore, presentation, and the boss fights and Hunt Mark side quest. There's a few points where the game has some pacing issues, namely due to early side quests (basically before the 50% mark in the game's story) and how the game is attempting to balance periods of combat with cutscenes. That said, if this is a major issue for you, you've never played much of the Final Fantasy franchise (or JRPGs in general), have you?

This is where I transition to talking about the combat, which is where a lot of the controversy and most polarized and negative criticisms exist. I think a lot of people expected this to play more like Devil May Cry 4/5 or Bayonetta, but that direction would hurt how Square-Enix is trying to open up the game to both JRPG fans and newcomers. The game plays a lot more like NieR: Automata/Replicant, and the enemy variety matches that. The level of complexity in combat is the same in FF16, where you're going to style on most enemy/mob encounters, which serve to put the game's pacing in a somewhat formulaic pattern: narrative/lore/dialogue, exploration, combat, exploration, some more combat, maybe a few sidequests involving a fetch quest or special enemies, then the next part of the main story. The only times you die are when you're fooling around too much. In that regard, the game is easy and very forgiving, but it's still reminding you that there's some challenge.

The optimal way to handle the more challenging combat encounters is to prioritize attacks that deplete an enemy's break gauge, which leaves them staggered for several seconds, before laying higher standard damage attacks on them. Rinse and repeat. This leads to some players using cheese strategies where they cycle through the same three to four abilities and spam combo attacks, never experimenting with using abilities offensively, defensively, and to outmaneuver or reposition. While the game isn't anywhere near as complex as your standard character action game, its combat is the kind where the more you invest and experiment with the different forms and abilities, the more you get in return to really style on enemies. This is particularly helpful against bosses, some of whom will be unforgiving with their attacks in later stages of their fights.

tl;dr for this part: don't simply spam Ignition, Will-o-Wikes, and Garuda and Odin abilities. You're the problem if you do.

If people criticizing the game were to say that it gets repetitive and puts a damper on their enjoyment of the game, I'd understand. Many of the more bombastic moments that are meant to excite can fall flat with those who aren't familiar with tokusatsu-styled presentation or thematic elements carried from past games in the franchise. Most valid critiques specify that, but I'm not seeing that among those who rush to parrot the same hyperbolic claims about the combat and story. It's pretty easy to see who among those who rate the game poorly have never actually played the game, and who were among the hate train when excitement over FF16 grew in strength last December. Thankfully, the endeavors of those who sought to derail the game have failed, and I feel FF16 is being reviewed fairly.

That brings me to where the game shines the most: the boss fights. Perhaps it's a bit detrimental to FF16's overall experience, but it has this narrative and gameplay flow that reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus, where the game's world and encounters are beautiful, but they serve as a means to carry you to story points and boss fights. Each fight carries its own challenges whether you're playing as Clive or during Eikonic Battles. Masayoshi Soken elevates how impressive these fights are with his music and compositions, and they're definitely a vital part to this game's identity.

I suppose that's a good place to move on to the last part of this review: FF16's identity. A lot of people ask if this can be considered a Final Fantasy game, and even ask if there is a definitive answer to the question "What makes a Final Fantasy game?" Well, if you've been in the fanbase as long as I have (hard to believe I've followed the series for over 20 years), you'll know there's two tonally distinct halves to the franchise. One stems from FF1 through 7, while the other stems from FF Tactics and 9. 8, 10, the 13 trilogy, 15, Stranger of Paradise, the FF7 remakes, and even Kingdom Hearts share this. The other side covers the Tactics series, Vagrant Story, 11, 12, 14, and this game. Playing this game shows it has a tonal blend of both sides, and it all ties together well, though it's clearly hailing from the Tactics line.

Easily one of the best games of this year. PC players will be in for a treat when they get their hands on FF16.

It's a really good final fantasy little bit different than the others and more mature, the only fault it's about there's not traditional turn base battle.

The game plot is so childish. All the villains are stupid. Very disappointed. The character design is good but not get enough supported in the plot. It is not RPG but I am ok with it.

Final Fantasy 16 sucks for the following reasons:

(you can literally finish the game without changing your weapon and without ever using any kind of items)
    - the plot is poorly written, and the story is just boring. Because based only on forced pretexts, and illogical motivations of the characters involved, and all this to bring out such a bland and banal protagonist dish that it competes with Vaan to be the worst in the series
    - has a linear and empty world. The map is just a menu where you select your destination and access the mission area. And it is a pity to note that despite this the maps of these missions are mostly empty and linear and therefore useless to explore
    - the dungeons design are bad, because they are all linear and empty corridors
    - the boring Lore
    - the quests are all garbage tier
    - poor technical performance. Even considering the technical structure of PS5, this FF16 turns out to be in some ways worse than an oldgen game

No ailments, no spells, no steampunk/tech elements - too fantasy-y, one character with very shallow progression, very little side content gameplay wise (because the lore in sidequests is superb). Much has been already written here by other players giving 10/10s, so I don't want to be too repetitive. My personal highlights in the game: the gripping main story with the most epic boss fights I've ever played, perfect soundtrack, top-tier voice acting esp. by Ben Starr, Susannah Fielding, and Ralph Ineson! The combat system took some time to get used to, but it clicks eventually. The number of side missions was intimidating, but since they become available throughout the game and are fairly short, they were easily manageable. Also, their purpose was mostly to add to lore and world-building or provide an opportunity to take a break from the highs of the main story, which I greatly appreciated.

I ended up at about 90hrs in my first playthrough and enjoyed every minute of it! I even caught myself unnecessarily extending the playtime because I didn't want it to end! This rarely ever happens, but just shows how much I loved experiencing FF16.

As an rpg this game was really unwhelming honestly because of how little customization there was in building your characters or lack of any real influence over your party set up or party members. But as an action game this game really slapped. Like this easily the best 3D hack n slash action since DMC 5 came out. The mechanics felt good to use, I alway felt like I was in control, the ekion abilities were basically this games style switching and those leg do all kinds of cool moves that really rewarded skillful play if you actually spent the time to learn how use them properly. My favorite ekion to use was probably Titan because it really require good timing to use tho shiva was also fun to use for the same reasons. My only real criticisms with this game is the its pacing/ length, it took me 37 hours to clear this game when personally I think this game would have been better if it was 8-10 hours shorter due to fact that you go long periods of time without learning new moves which really hurt at the beginning of the game and also was impacted by how little variety there was in this games gameplay loop. This game is nothing but fighting and town exploration and not much else. Like there aren’t any mini games, real dungeons with actual puzzles or gimmicks to mess around with, just more enemies to fight which is certainly way to design a game. But inspire of how repetitive this game could be at times I still loved it in the end and that was mainly due to how fun the combat, this games trully EPIC BOSS FIGHTS, it’s actually surprising pretty well written and engaging story. Like boss fights were really fun and well designed and varied. The big ekion battles were genuinely epic and some most enjoyable boss fights I’ve experienced in a video game and had more going on just spectacle they actually required some skill to get through especially some of fights in the second half of the game. No spoilers but The story actually hits pretty hard and is actually well done, it even got me shed a tear at the end. One last thing soundtrack is LEGENDARY, nuff said. 9/10 Expand

If you master one skill u can use that skill on another eikons slot.
Magic doesnt deal so much damage in game (not inlucing eikons magic) i mostly used in combos or for flying enemies also charged vers kinda deals ok damage.
Limit isnt special attack in this game, its kinda like dmc devil form.

Eikons fights are epic not button spam(sometimes)

Side quests was balanced between goods and errands. Some sidequest gives u really good info about side characters or lore , some other gives upgrades and some others are just errands.

It has hunt missions like ff15 it was one of best things in ff15.

U can learn terms or see character lore by talking loresman in game it really helps and it fsr better than watching video or searching on google.
Also u can learn things about nations, map and events timeline by talking vivian.
It has dog assisting and chocobo to ride.(chocobo unlocks after side quest)

Game isnt open world but kinda like open world. All map isnt connected but cities in a region connected. Ig its good thing cus u dont have to walk all day in map , u have many location to fast travel
World desing is ok it doesnt have smth epic or bad , it has corridor like part not good but overall ok imo.

Game isnt hard also if you use auto dodge or item that makes time slow to dodge it makes game so easy.

Without using them its not that easy but not hard too.
Game has eikon skill time challenges they are hard to find in map but not that hard to beat i beat all 1st try.

Games doesnt run at 60fps on performance mode its like 45 50 mostly but sometimes drops in 1 or 2 cities also it drops when so much explosion happens.

Final Fantasy XVI is different. It is mature, bold, and the game knows what it wants to be. I haven't experienced emotional highs and lows like this in a Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy X. The story had me tearing up, jumping for joy, and on the edge of my seat for what felt like the entire campaign. I haven't experienced a video game story like this........ ever.

While I prefer turn based combat, I have loved the action based combat developed by Ryota Suzuki. At times I did wish it was more difficult but they've given me arcade mode and Final Fantasy hard mode to challenge myself appropriately. Even in the main story difficulty, performing a parry, dodge, or proper combo feels really good. The main story sequences are epic, grand, and bold and I understand why Yoshi-P went with action based combat to make the transition to these scenes more realistic. Performing a cinematic strike feels epic.

I get why this game is so controversial. For the first time in 17 years Square-Enix did not pull their punches. They went with the direction Yoshi-P wanted without holding him back. Many people will not enjoy it, and that's ok. The people that do enjoy games like this will absolutely love it. For the last 20 years I have bounced between Final Fantasy 6, 7 and 9 as my favourite in the series. Final Fantasy 16 has cemented itself as my new favourite and I do not say that lightly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a Work of art, best in the series with traditional final fantasy themes reinvented for a modern world all whilst being a medieval fantasy game, it’s combat is similar to DMC with its fast paced hack and slash abilities, the UI is fantastic and clean, the bosses and battles will blow you away and the story is beautiful in more ways than you’d expect from square enix, I will say there’s ALOT of gameplay to expect and if you do play the side quests you’re adding an additional 20+ hours on top do campaign, the cutscenes are worth it, there’s a few complaints but I think everyone’s got tiktok brain rot and can’t focus for longer than 30 seconds, if you liked Witcher 3, DMC and final fantasy 7, you’ll love this I was and still am not over the game, it’s made me feel like I’ve genuinely been a part of the story and most final fantasy games in recent years haven’t given me that feeling, it’s bringing new and old fans alike into the series and with the battles reinvented (summons to eikons) in a glorious epic showdown style, I don’t know how you can’t enjoy this game, you’ll laugh and cry and get angry for the characters, it’s beautiful honestly. Amo este juego es de los mejores final fantasy, obvio el estilo de combate ha cambiado pero eso no lo hace menos, es un mega juegazo, una historia increíble te conectas mucho con los personajes, visualmente espectacular, batallas divertidas y un final inesperado.

Beautiful graphic, great story and soundtrack, but could use more in depth RPG features like a proper party system and more impactful gear.

Sadly this is just "we have god of war at home" with off-brand DMC combat. Also performance is absolute **** in the 60fps mode and the 30fps one genuinely hurts my eyes after more than 10 minutes. 99% of side quests feel like caricatures of MMOs. Levels are ff13 hallways all over again. The gear system is somehow even more braindead than ff15.

I seriously hope that CU3 never makes another

I hate this game. I waited 10 years for Final Fantasy 15, and I waited 7 years for Final Fantasy 16. How many more years do we have to wait for the next Final Fantasy? "Final Fantasy 16," let's just call it "Devil May Cry 16."

First of all, it lacks any RPG elements. The equipment system, at least, is just for show, and it has almost no gameplay value.

Secondly, the character development is terrible, except for Bahamut. In this game, only Bahamut's character design is successful. The main character and the female protagonist are both failures. One is only focused on revenge, and the other lacks any presence.

    FF4, FF6, FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10 where art thou?
How I miss those days of greatness, where those games where deep with story, mechanics, magic, items and lore. Opening every treasure box was exciting. Will I get a new armor, weapon, maybe a new magic?
And this, what is this? FF16 has nothing of the above. I agree, the graphics are good and some of the battle music is excellent, but where

I agree, the graphics are good and some of the battle music is excellent, but where is the game?
No party, no weapon selection, no armor, no magic, no strategy, juts walk around, see cutscenes, find useless loot, evade and kill.
Yes, the boss fights look epic, but deep beneath, I can kill any HP bloated boss by just clicking the attack and evade buttons.
Square Enix said that with FF16 they are returning to the roots and getting all veteran fans excited. I prefer playing FF6 for the 10th time and not this.
In my country I paid $90 for the base game.
I will finish the game because I paid so much, and the story is interesting enough, but the game, where is the game?
I created a Metacritic account just to show how disappointed I am and warn other FF veterans to stay away from this game.

This is the most disappointing game I have ever played in these year. Story is terrible. I really really think we should re-evaluate Final Fantasy Origin after this game.

Just another Final Fantasy game, that fails to deliver. The world looks great, but it's just a lifeless scenery. There are barely people you can actually talk to and if there are, they don't have anything interesting to say. The characters also look too clean for a medival fantasy game.
The battle system is again very chaotic. Once you gain more abilities there are light shows all over

The battle system is again very chaotic. Once you gain more abilities there are light shows all over the screen and you barely know what's going on. It just isn't a problem, because most enemies don't even pose a threat. Except for their large health pools they don't have anything going for them. So even with blind button mashing you'll be fine. The battles just drag on for way too long.
Also it's very annoying, that you often get animation locked by your abilities. This is so counterintuitive for an ARPG. If you want to make action combat, design your skills for action combat, so that my character responds to my input and isn't locked for 3 seconds, because he has to go through a lengthy animation.
If you want to make lengthy and flashy animtions, go back to making turn based games. At least there players can enjoy those animations. In an ARPG they are just an hindrance.
The side quests are the worst type of fetch quests you'll ever see in a video game. It's unbelievable how a series known for their great side quests could turn into this.
There is barely no RPG and almost no J left in this JRPG. It's more like a character action game than anything else. The skill progression system is so shallow, they could just have removed it all together and turned the whole game into an Action game instead of an JRPG.

But the worst thing are those Eikon battles the game advertises with. They just aren't fun and fell so out of place. You see like 20-30 seconds of interesting animations and actions, but the battles drag on for 5 minutes or more. You just keep repeating the same mind numbing stuff over and over and over again, barely doing any damage to your enemy and having to rewatch the same animations over and over and over again. So after a while you get really annoyed by those animations, that were supposed to be cool and awesome. You just wish to finally get over with this fight and move on with the story. It would have been much much better if SE made the Eikon battles just 20-30 seconds long cutscenes.

The story and characters are the only good aspects of this game, but they can't save this trainwreck. Before you buy this game check out the demo.

It’s really no fun to play. It’s like a bad Bayonetta or Devil May Cry. Story is weak. It’s just running forward and pressing square. By far the worst FF ever.

I Don't get the hype for this game it barely feels like a Final Fantasy game. It just rips off DMC's combat and the length of MGS cutscenes. Do not get this game you will be disappointed if you're a fan of the older and superior turn-based Final Fantasy games.

This is just a light action game with FF14 style, the more you play it, the more boring it becomes, there is really no rpg element and game map exploration in this game, I prefer FF15 over this, If you like JRPG and ARPG, you should play some game like Ys VIII: Tears of Dana instead.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
