Story, animation, and voice acting are incredible. The game feels hand crafted with care and attention to detail.

A valiant shift with it's gameplay and it's narrative story. But also captures the fascinating and magic that brings this series to life . With its stunning graphic and beautiful soundtracks it earns it's entry in already beloved franchise .

The craters were not afraid to get dark and ugly with the story, they really went all out! I do have two small complaints though. The system with switching the dogs and potions needs better indicators as to which you're on. I have wasted many potions thinking I was giving a command to torgal the dog. The other is that you can't play as or level up other characters that join your party. Using different characters fighting styles is one of the best parts about RPGs like final fantasy! But nothing is ever perfect, and this is an amazing game that deserves to be experienced! Expand

I have finally crawled out of the hole I spent the last 4 days to write a review. Please bear with me as I ramble on here, because I don't actually know what I'm going to say yet.

    Where to even begin?

For the past 4 days I've been glued to the screen for 12+ hours each day, absolutely gripped by what we have got here. Wearing my bias on my sleeve, the only other FF game I played before this was Crisis Core and XIV. The rest I couldn't give a toss about. I played this game not because it's Final Fantasy, but because of the people who mad it. Heck, I got a PS5 because of the people who made this game.

In one short sentence; Worth it. Not disappointed.

For those that don't know CBU3 (Creative Business Unit 3) was responsible for the revitalisation of Final Fantasy 14 after its initial failed launch and its subsequent development since. Helmed by their director and producer Naoki Yoshida, the MMO has been going from strength to strength, which is a rare occurrence in the genre.

So when I heard that the next mainline FF game was going to have the same team attached to it, I knew it was going to be a great time. Just wasn't quite ready for how great of a time it will be.

Let's get something straight right out of the gate; Combat, gameplay loop and systems a Final Fantasy game does not make. Story does; and the story we have on hand here is most definitely 'Final Fantasy'. That means a great world, loads of character drama intertwined with the current geopolitical state of the world as we observe these larger-than-life tragedies through the characters they affect, rather than from a bird's eye view. We see and feel the personal stakes each character (protagonist, antagonist or otherwise) has wrapped up in the days' problems.

Combat is great and yes, it is FINALLY full and fully action combat. None of this weird, locking you into an attack animation once you press a button so it's not turn-based but actually it's turn based thing FF7R did.

Although playing in Graphics mode, being locked to 30fps, definitely introduces some input delay which can make or break some of the tougher encounters when it comes down to the wire, though it's nothing you can't get used to over the course of the game's runtime. Eikon abilities I'm happy to say are varied and combining them allows for countless different playstyles. Personally I prefer to endure a foe with precision dodges while whittling down their 'Will Guage' so they open up with a Stagger, which is when I unleash my big hitting, single target abilities while Limit Breaking or 'Priming', as Clive enters a Semi-Eikon status. Which is an approach just as viable as any other build. There is definitely a freedom of choice on mixing and matching abilities and builds are only as viable as the player's skilled at using them.

    Soken music.

Now at this point you might be thinking 'well but Yoake why did you give the game an 8? you've been singing its praises'

It's locked behind the purchase of a magical box from the wizard Sony.
The motion blur is still very noticeable even 40 hours in. We need to be able to turn it off, period. That alone is probably worth a full new playthrough as the scenery is extremely smeared anytime you aren't standing still. Not a problem during combat, as things move fast, but just for exploration and moving around, it needs to go.
Some pacing issues in the story that I understand, but still find jarring.

    All in all, this game is a masterpiece that will define the PS5 as a console. It is a must own and a must play. I eagerly look forward to CBU3's next entry into the line of Singleplayer FF games. Also while I have your attention;

It would be a 9 if it were technically better and a little more variety in the fights. I would have preferred a system like the one in the FF7 remake or that Jill is more involved in the fight and that you can switch between the two and combine the attacks.

Unfortunately, the game is also another step away from FF.
Even then I hated that they called their FF MMO FF11. Even that had nothing to do with FF except for some elements that keep coming back. FF series is a pure single player series.
It was a big mistake not to call it FF Online or something like that back then. Just like other FF spinoff series.
The same with FF14. FF 15 and especially FF16 do not have the problem that it is a pure single player game, but that it is too much single player.
The parties themselves are not important and you cannot control them. (FF15 had it patched but still not the real one)
In short, FF should be an RPG or JRPG where you have a party and you go on adventures with that party and ultimately save the world.

FF16 has the problem that you don't have a party and RPG elements are almost non-existent.
Every Souls game except Sekiro has more RPG elements, which is just wrong when such a series has more RPG elements than FF.
FF stands for the fact that JRPG became big and well-known in the west. Now you have a good game, I would say, even if it unfortunately has some bugs, which has almost nothing to do with JRPG.
It would have done so much better for the title to be released as an FF spinoff. Just like back then with FF15.
But then they would probably sell fewer units because the title FF16 alone attracts more customers than an FF Game of Crystal or whatever it could have been called.
It's a shame that SE doesn't really want anything to do with JRPGs anymore. At least not with a big budget and want to develop names like FF.
FF is the only name that would still be able to bring turn-based JRPGs to the masses.
I would have wished that they would take up this again and revive and further develop the turn-based JRPGs, that the genre would not die out and was only developed for low budgets.
The games these days all suffer from the fact that they are becoming more and more the same anyway.

As already mentioned, there are some problems.
The performance could be better. especially the 60 fps mode is not good. You should turn off the ray tracing so that the FPS is at least halfway close to 60, away from the fights.
Especially since you don't notice anything from ray tracing.
Gives option to have it off or on.
    Just like with motion blur.
It's a real shame that you can't control your combat companions. Apart from the dog, which is also rather annoying in the long run.
Why not something like in FF12, where you set the companions in advance in a menu, how they should react in fights and when and how to heal etc.
So they do almost nothing but stand around. Particularly weak from Jill, who is Shiva, she should be able to wipe the floor with just about everyone.
But I play it through quite clearly. As I said, it's not a bad game, but it has too little to do with FF to call it FF16, a mainstay of the series.
German synchro is unfortunately partly not good but that was already the case with FF15. The important speakers at least have good synchro. NPCs is unfortunately cringe and you can tell that you didn't put a lot of money and time into it.
But you can fix it if you play it in English or even better in Japanese.
I'm glad to get a German synchro at all. Many don't do that anymore.
The combat system is ok but not nearly as good as DMC. It's a mixture of KH and DMC, which is logical. It's partly too simple or simplified compared to DMC and KH, but I think that did the game good. Otherwise there would be too much frustration. The game is not designed or made to have precise inputs like DMC. Especially since the camera is too close to have an overview of the battlefield and always know exactly where each enemy is and when he is attacking you.

Some boss fights were a bit annoying. Doesn't like fighting the big bosses that much if you're not fighting as an ifrit yourself. Doesn't feel as fast and good as DMC. But I am satisfied with it and a gigantic step forward compared to FF15. Tried replaying FF15 before starting FF16. This was not possible. In my opinion, FF15's combat system has aged very badly and is no longer really playable for me. FF16 does really well in comparison and is a dream. But that brings me back to my main criticism, did FF have to become more of a DMC and KH? Why didn't you move away from FF15 and go back to the roots? Luckily we didn't get a stamina bar. Hope we never get a Souls FF. If so, please only as a spinoff ser

Square reinvents its oldest franchise A New Era: I'm walking straight into the house - Final Fantasy 16 is by far my favorite part of the entire series. Naoki Yoshida and his team at Square Enix have created a bombastic RPG monstrosity that categorically defies everything that is Final Fantasy. And yet the core, the spirit of the series is more intact here than it has been for many years To the quality. I've been enjoying the game for 50 hours now and I haven't noticed a single bug until now. The game runs smoothly and the transitions from the game to the video sequences run seamlessly into one another. Of course you can complain about the performance mode, but that doesn't make your masterpiece unplayable. I bet it will be reworked. I also don't know of any game except now Final Fantasy 16 which was released on day one with no errors. Not at Microsoft and not at Nintendo either. Made very strong Square Enix. Gameplay. The focus on the action layout and no longer on the long-winded round-based battles, as in the past, is not only good for the game but also makes it much more interesting for many players. Please do not get me wrong. I grew up playing everything Final Fantasy. But let's all be honest. Turn-based battles are not only boring, they also take the pace out of the game. It just doesn't fit our time anymore. That's why I love the new direction. to the story . The storytelling and staging of Final Fantasy 16 leaves all other parts previously released looking old and boring.. Final Fantasy 16 is dirtier, more dramatic and more gory than any other game in the series. Final Fantasy has finally come of age and it suits this franchise incredibly well. The characters suffer and have flaws. They doubt themselves and question their actions. You don't give up. You sympathize with them and mourn. You laugh and you cry. But above all, you never want to put the Gampad down because it is so incredibly exciting. I can only recommend you. Buy and play this game. It's worth every penny. I have been a final fantasy fan since FF6, and have always loved the series for its music, characters, and stories. The gameplay becoming more action based never mattered to me, I like both but at the end of the day it’s not why I play FF. FF16 has great gameplay but most importantly has a great story, great characters, and great music that I have always loved from the franchise

Tbh it's more like 8.5/10, not perfect but ultimately very good, but I'm giving it a 10 to spite review bombers. Gameplay's excellent, best boss fights I've ever seen, one of the best OSTs ever composed, an often iffy plot that occasionally scratches the heights of what a story in a game can be. Definitely recommend.

Undoubtedly it is a great game. Well polish. Heavily focusing on story as it is heavily loaded with cut scene, ATL, librarian, Map and history board trying to let player understand the story to the fullest extent. On the combat system which failed me on this part a bit as the producer claimed that this is his greatest work of all time but it is actually fatigue more than fun. Combat are somewhat deep but lacking of variety as we only control one character. Fighting every bosses and mini bosses feel the same way as the loop of breaking and spamming ability after successfully break them goes on and on. As a good action game player need to be clearly sees what happen so player can response in time but for FF16 their is not totally failed on this point but player can be blind by so many special effect resulting in failure to response properly.
Exploration and undiscovered the secret is no more. Poor level design. Just a plain beautiful field that we almost cannot react with it. Straight path way leading from point A to point B.
Storytelling can be hard to digest as the world is setting in heavily political driven. Character is great but party member interaction is lacking. Only Clive and Jill go save the world. Even FF15 doing better on this part. How can we forget the last camp fire scene on previous title even so many years later?
Feel like the producer put so many budget on story telling and cut of exploration, level design, and playable characters part. But still, it is a great game.

Because it just doesn't make sense to keep obsessing about something that you clearly don't like. You are not real Final Fantasy fans and that's absolute fact. You are sad pathetic haters and nothing else.

The splendid graphics and elaborate lore were like a love letter to the long-time fans, capturing the spirit of Final Fantasy in an entirely fresh light. Sure, there were moments when the pacing stuttered, action sequences teetering on the edge of stagnation before roaring back to life, but these minor blips did little to dampen the overall experience.

Each line of dialogue, delivered with a rawness that rang true, reminded me why I love this series so much. The characters might be embroiled in circumstances far removed from my reality, yet I found their joy, courage, and uncertainty echoing within me.

The game's climax was a masterstroke – unexpected, disorienting, and profoundly moving. It was the kind of twist that hits you in the gut and makes you question everything you thought you knew, sending you back through previous scenes with fresh eyes.

Gameplay was immersive and challenging, marked with minor glitches that will undoubtedly be smoothed out. These tiny flaws, though usually bothersome, were dwarfed by the game's overall excellence and immersion. The emotional odyssey, the high stakes, the loveable characters – all of it was, in true Final Fantasy style, beautifully human.

"Final Fantasy XVI" is not just a game; it's an experience – an unforgettable journey that seizes you from the first cutscene and refuses to let go. It's a testament to the power of storytelling and the magic of Final Fantasy. A wholehearted 5 out of 5 stars.

I will come back and complete my proper review once I have completed the game. I am however sure this will be a fairly high score as I have been having a great time in the 10/12 hours I have played so far.

OK so after a while longer playing there are some flaws... Dropped to 9/10.
The performance mode was slightly unstable at times especially in a couple of the big fight sequences.

I started playing on Friday evening, I'm up to 22 hours played so far and had to pause to come on here to highly recommend it. No spoilers. It's slow going and linear at the start, but once I hit around the 10 hour mark, the game world opens up, zones stop being linear, and the story takes off like a rocket ship. I'm addicted and gotta know

Only about 20 hours in but I'm 100% emotionally involved. The characters are believeable, loveable, and relatable. The story is completely captivating and the action is top notch. Coupled with the graphics, I can honestly say this is one of the better Final Fantasy games, maybe top 5 -- and as a 41 yr old gamer, I've played them all ;)

A sign of the times, the world we live in where moronic people review bomb. This game is great, the story is fantastic, as one has come to expect from a Final Fantasy game.

The graphics are great with beautiful landscapes all around, and great character models. The combat is fast paced and fun, perhaps not the greatest combat of any action game, but certainly fun and gets better as you

The eikon battles are especially awe-inspiring and well done. The soundtrack is fantastic with callbacks to many previous ff games. If you are a fan of the series you will find yourself feeling nostalgic quite often. There is no way this game deserves the 0's the idiots rate it. Sorry people but get over the fact that it's not turn based anymore. Guarantee most of the 0 raters haven't even played it. Try for yourself, and enjoy, because if you give it a fair chance, I'm sure you will.

The game is a solid action game and, if it were not a mainline FF game, it would be considered a great new IP. HOWEVER, the game does not quite feel like Final Fantasy. It feels lazy and quickly churned out. For what it is, it is great, but from FF, I have grown to expect some soul and some great stories and this game has NEITHER. HOWEVER, the game does not quite feel like Final Fantasy. It feels lazy and quickly churned out. For what it is, it is great, but from FF, I have grown to expect some soul and some great stories and this game has NEITHER. First, the story is as generic as it gets. The characters are dull and boring with Clive and Jill essentially being the same exact character. The first like 15 hours are just Clive not understanding what was rather obvious and coming to terms with his failure again and again. Jill has the exact same problem and the exact same solution. There are moments here and there where the game has moments of Final Fantasyness but overall it is severely lacking in the soul department. Even FF13 which has been unfairly panned for years now had a charm and exuberance that made it distinctively Final Fantasy. In FF16, they try hard to incorporate certain things like the spells and abilities we are used to but the truth is Clive is monochromatic and every enemy can easily be killed irrespective of which Eikons you choose. In total, he has like 4 abilities for each Eikon. The magic button is completely useless and basically does chip damage for when you are far.

The world is boring! Valisthea is tiny and repetitive. You have these little towns with like 3 buildings each. I am approximately half way done and thus far there have been two or three dungeons beyond the two unimpressive and tiny zones. I think there are two other equally unimpressive zones coming up with some fetch quests but I am not looking forward to them. The production value is obviously high and the game is entertaining but, WHEN IT IS ALL SAID AND DONE, this will be remembered as a game that is closer to FF15 than to FF7, 8, 9, 6 or even 12.

Lastly, the characters are so lame that they took Balthier, called him Cid, and thought no one would notice. They also took Basch and called him Rodney. They even look like their source material. Clive will go down with Noctis as the worst protagonist in FF history while Jill will go down as the overall worst character ever. The only characters with any soul are an NPC named Gav and Torgal who is a wolf with no dialogue. Despite having no dialogue, his personality is more fleshed out than that of Jill.

Is this a perfect game? No but it’s close. Final Fantasy have always innovated and 16 isn’t different. Combat is solid, button customisation would be nice but developers said they are looking into that. Story hits you in the feels multiple times. Some side quests are fun and interesting but some are boring fetch quests. Protagonist is generally likeable.
Personally I had no noticeable FPS

Personally I had no noticeable FPS issues, one bug which I’d call minor at the blacksmith which was fixed after a restart. In all a fantastic game.

Wow. This is one of the most amazing, life changing Final Fantasy entries ever to be introduced to the world. I rarely feel so much emotion while playing a game, and there are just so many breathtaking moments. There are certainly things which could transform it into one of the greatest games of all time, such as better side quests and things to do, or just imagine what an open world would have been like—yes, we are bored of poorly executed open worlds, but that isn’t an issue with the concept and promise of them. That said, Final Fantasy 16 still manages to raise the bar for the franchise in so many ways, and significantly so. It is still absolutely Final Fantasy, despite its transformation from turn based to full action, which is done with perfection here. Clive’s abilities are smooth, fun and not confusing like past games. Honestly, I think it would have been just as good without the M rating- one of the best things about the series was its ability to evoke strong emotions without the usual bloodlust or profanity. It does this sometimes awkwardly, but they’re doing what they can to win over a new generation that’s used to Game of Thrones and Mortal Kombat fatalities—a rather disgusting side of humanity that harkens back to the Roman colosseum and public executions by the French guillotine. Why do we enjoy watching this? That aside, this is a significant leap in the right direction overall, and we look forward to where this takes us in the years ahead. Expand

This game includes some of the most jaw dropping spectacles I've ever seen in any medium. I am constantly left speechless and often teary-eyed. The combat is some of the most intricate and explorative I've experienced. The soundtrack gives me chills as it weaves in and out of situations seamlessly. The narrative and performances come together in ways I will never forget.

The quality AND quantity of Final Fantasy XVI could have spanned 3 titles and each one of them would come together as masterpieces. This game does it in one.

Final Fantasy XVI is an excellent game in every way. If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry. This is a solid RPG/action game. Some elements of the game are unusual and fresh for single-player parts of the Final Fantasy series, but some are too dull and rudimentary.

New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
