    I want to like this game, but, unfortunately, I can't. For all its spectacle and presentation, it has some very glaring flaws. The high are very high, but the lows are very low.

    Pros: When the game ramps up, the spectacle is captivating. The game is load, bombastic, and phenomenal. You feel the power fantasy the game is striving to deliver. This game is what God of War used to be,    I want to like this game, but, unfortunately, I can't. For all its spectacle and presentation, it has some very glaring flaws. The high are very high, but the lows are very low.

    Pros:

    When the game ramps up, the spectacle is captivating. The game is load, bombastic, and phenomenal. You feel the power fantasy the game is striving to deliver. This game is what God of War used to be, what the new installation of GoW should have been, not the lame duck it has become.

    The cast of characters is likeable. Clive, Jill, And Cid are phenomenal characters. I liked spending time with them. I didn't mind not being able to control them. I didn't mind not always having them in my party. The story is very much Clive's story, and Clive is strong enough to carry the narrative on his own.

    The game looks amazing. I played it on Frame “Rate mode” over “Graphics” and it still impressed me on how visually stunning the game is. The amount of detail that went into this game makes it worth owning a ps5. This is next gen gaming, and it was about time we got a game that merited the purchase of the ps5, because after 2 years of its release, almost every title we’ve had has been a ps4 port.

    Cons

    The story is bogged down with a lot of pointless filler. At first it wasn't a problem, but towards the latter half of the game the filler becomes egregious. It dampens the flow of the narrative. Every major chapter completion is mired down by a pointless fetch quest that does not add any value to the overall narrative. These moments should have been made side quests. For example, looking for a hooker has no impact on the overall narrative and should have been written out of the main narrative.

    Side quests are dull and repetitive. Many side quests are "go there, mindlessly kill a few enemies, and come back." While many games follow this formula, the stories tied to them are lackluster. There are very few side quest that had worthwhile interactions. After a while, I just ignored all the talking. I did them only to get for the few rewards they provide.

    Hunts are fun. Some of them pose a little challenge, but everything rewards you with material for a crafting system that has absolutely no value, there is little to be gained from them aside from the fun in engaging with them.

    There is a lack of enemy variety. While there is good selection of enemies to fight, the more interesting types are locked behind the campaign. The world of Valisthea is an expansive open world, but you do get some small areas to explore. However, most of these areas have the same three types of enemies: bugs, goblins, and chocobos. These enemies don't really pose a challenge. They’re sponges, but that’s it.

    The combat system is too plain. The game can feel like a one-button smasher most of the time. I have to intentionally make it challenging for myself since most enemies aren't engaging. The only time the combat shines is when you're fighting a mini-boss or boss battle.

    The implementation of an upgrade system baffles. As you progress through the story, the game gives you the gear it wants you to utilize. It drops a lot of upgrade material, but there is absolutely no use for it. There is never a moment you need to worry about crafting or upgrading a weapon or gear. Every boss fight gives you a weapon to "craft". Once you “craft” that weapon, you have no incentive to see the black smith again until after you’ve killed your next boss. Since you can't upgrade these weapons and since they're the strongest weapons between every chapter, you don't have a need to see the black smith. The game should have just given you the weapons.

    The crafting system would have been more sense if none of the weapons in the game had attack values, rather different elemental properties or effects. With all weapons being on par with each other, upgrading could have been more engaging, but that leads into another issue.

    A lot of the strategy from former titles has been stripped from this game. Let’s say one of the swords would have had an ice element to it. It could have been your go to weapon to fight fire type enemies. Everything is so bare bones.

    Every town in the game feels empty. There are lot of towns in the game, but despite how many npcs, there are, most of them feel empty. How difficult would it have been to add shops, smithies, and Inns to these locations? You can’t even rest at an inn to heal your wounds. You either have to die intentionally, or buy potions heal, then buy more potions.

    They say there's some challenge in new game +, but new game + only works if the base game is good enough to pull me back into it.

    I like Final Fantasy. I want these games to success, but this is a great game to buy on sale.    … Expand

    I clocked in a little over 70 hours at the end of my first playthrough, which includes ALL sidequests, chronolith challenges (out in the wild -- I did not do any redos back at base to "beat records" or any of the sort), and all bounty hunts. Please take this into consideration that when people say this game had too much cutscenes and not enough gameplay -- I believe it was estimated to beI clocked in a little over 70 hours at the end of my first playthrough, which includes ALL sidequests, chronolith challenges (out in the wild -- I did not do any redos back at base to "beat records" or any of the sort), and all bounty hunts. Please take this into consideration that when people say this game had too much cutscenes and not enough gameplay -- I believe it was estimated to be about 11 hours of cinematic cutscenes. Most reviews that are bashing this as merely watching a movie simply either didn't stick through the beginning, or chose to "skip" the gameplay.

    To that point, I felt the sidequests were really great worldbuilding. In fact, side quests towards the end are crucial for understanding how the story wraps up, and it is clear from reading reviews that many people who formulated their opinions simply did not do the quests. Sure the game runs linear through its chapters, but it is by nature of the type of story it's telling. I tried to pace myself to finish all sidequests available before moving on to prevent a pile-up that would cause burnout -- it was very doable for this game. The only thing I did postpone a bit was some of the hunt board, which is basically just going to find a monster out in the wild and slay it.

    Content-wise, there were moments of joy and moments of anguish; fists were clenched, and tears were shed. This is an emotional ride that left me wanting more -- and I do feel compelled to play NG+. I'm a fan of how they documented and organized lore within the game and allow you to read about different locations, history, and character profiles. The fact that NPCs change their dialogue as you walk by them through various parts of the game adds much to the immersion. The voice acting was on point.

    Where this game could improve: pls, the text can be hard to read sometimes. I was playing on a 65" tv and i'm not sitting too far from it; I can't imagine someone playing on a smol monitor. The weapon/equipment system was also lackluster, though abilities more than make up for it in that you have quite a number of combinations of skill sets to choose from -- making your gameplay unique.    … Expand

    A masterpiece of action, Final Fantasy XVI manages to combine combat only Capcom could make so far with great storytelling, compelling characters brought to life by incredible acting, and amazing setpieces with Square Enix's legendary cinematic quality.

    It's as epic as the series ever has gotten in ages! The music is absolutely incredible, followed by equally exhilarating fast-paced action combat, all tied up by an extensive lore, beautiful and breathtaking cutscenes and a gripping story! Again, the dualsense controller haptics implementation is masterfully done. All in all, it is a MUST BUY PS5 GAME!

    CBU3 has reached back in time and brought back the magic that was a Squaresoft FF with 16.Story, pacing, graphical fidelity, combat, this game looks and feels next gen. The characters have depth and Clive Rosefield is the best FF mainline protagonist since Cloud Strife. Absolute Masterpiece.

    My new favorite Final Fantasy game! Story is top notch, and gripping, and it is a breath of fresh air to the franchise. The character development is in depth and leaves me hungry for more backstory on each character I encounter. The combat is cutting edge, I do miss the turn based combat, but man this action combat system just fits this game like a glove. Musical score is a 10/10My new favorite Final Fantasy game!     Story Till now the game hasn't missed any story beat for me. Some lines do feel cringe especially when Clive is trying to act traumatic, but the main story is just epic and full of surprises and hype moments World
    With GOW R and this game I am glad more and more games are ditching the mindless empty open world formula. Open zones in ff16 have distinct personality and are brimming with details. Towns and cities are lively, dungeons have a unique theme Boss

    Even if the fighting was feeling strange at first and the story won’t hold the fast pace of the demo this feels like FF and is now my ne favorite part. i am a fan of the old ones and this one reminded me of FF5.

    After waiting almost 20 years for Square to produce a game that took my attention away from the real world and into a world of fantasy (ff10 being the last one) I'm happy to say that this has delivered. Yes if I could have it my own way I'd still be playing turn based and have a free roam world but I just need to accept that times have changed.

    Honestly I can't fault the game. I've always been a huge FF fan and I'm glad they change their games up every time. Could you imagine if all 16 mainline games played the same way? I know I'd get bored.     This game is perfect, maybe not for every Final Fantasy fan but a game that can be enjoyed by every player new and old. The OST is unbelievable, I mean bravo to who ever was involved in that. Boss fights are big and some are huge each with their own way of fighting ensuring you make a wide use of your techniques I often finished a boss and then dropped the controller in disbelief at what IThis game is perfect, maybe not for every Final Fantasy fan but a game that can be enjoyed by every player new and old. The OST is unbelievable, I mean bravo to who ever was involved in that. Boss fights are big and some are huge each with their own way of fighting ensuring you make a wide use of your techniques I often finished a boss and then dropped the controller in disbelief at what I had just witnessed. Story is great and helps you feel engaged with all the characters you come across on your journey and although the side quests you do for them to begin with may seem pointless they often finalise with a good payoff. I can’t fault the game and I believe that should the game sell well for SE they should consider a direct sequel expanding on the story and the characters.… Expand

    The game is fun, the characters are likable, and the battle mechanics are great. The plot was very interesting, and there are all sorts of dark twists and turns that keep your attention. It’s pretty violent, but I’ve definitely seen worse. The graphic and the soundtrack are stunning.

It speaks volumes considering Final Fantasy 15 came out incomplete (took two years for all the FF Royal content to come out). This feels like a very complete experience and I couldn't be happier. The performance mode definitely needs to be optimized. However, if you play on graphics mode it holds pretty steady.

    Definitely a fantastic game. It may not be for the more traditional final fantasy fan. But if you can get past that, you are in for one heck of an experience    … Expand

The gameplay is phenomenal and is fresh. There is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning but by the end I had a flow for all my abilities. The eikon battles are particularly spectacular. On a note for those who are wary because of the review bombing I don't feel these are worthy. Yes there is less diversity in terms of skin colour in this game then perhaps in others however I don't feel this is deserved. The story and themes are what are important and those are very mature and raise social issues in their own way.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is incredible! I bought a PS5 specifically to play FFXVI, and I have absolutely no regrets.

    I was mesmerised the whole way through. The story, music, visuals, and voice acting were all so well done. The combat was super fun, and while it initially felt a little simple, figuring out new and more effective combos as I got further into the game gave it so much more depth.

    The world and the characters were brilliant - I really bonded to all of Clive's hideaway family, as well as all of the side quest characters dotted around the world, and I found myself celebrating and mourning every twist and turn of the story with them. Once I had cleared all of the side quests and hunts, and it was time for the final battle, I desperately didn't want to go. It took me most of an evening before I felt ready to leave the hideaway. But holy moly it was worth it - even with the half an hour of sobbing through the credits afterwards.

Hands down the best Final Fantasy in a decade plus, if not the best all time. This is the best Cid of any Final Fantasy game, and imo Clive is the best protagonist in the series. The mature themes are a refreshing and modern take on the franchise. My biggest issues: Elemental magic doesn’t really exist in this game (fire should be strong against ice, etc. They all do the same damage regardless) and the grand amount of crafting materials you pick up throughout the initial play-through don’t go to much use after the midway point of the game even though that’s the majority of rewards from chests and exploration. 10/10 game and the story is gripping and you become invested in these characters and the world. Keep in mind I haven’t completed a new game+, but do have 47/50 trophies and over 75 hours played.… Expand

Final Fantasy XVI takes a lot of gameplay and story inspiration from the likes of the recent God of War games and the Devil May Cry series and it shows. The epic Eikon fights, and the hack and slash combat remind me of these games. I personally think these kind of games are fun, it reminds me a lot of .Hack as well. The characters have a lot of depth, and there are some really raw emotional scenes, and Game of Thrones-esque family and political drama. Clive's and Dion's voice actors especially really impressed me in those moments The side quests also have Clive build a lot of relationships with some important side characters that pay off a little past the halfway point in the game. The awesome boss fights and the mystery of the Eikons were exciting enough on their own for a game, but I think what I enjoyed the most was watching Clive grow as a character. He starts out as a 20 something, brooding, revenge seeking, dark hero, who feels he can only trust himself, and he grows up to understand that there are a ton of things he can't do on his own even with his magic. He builds trust and friendships through sidequests and learns that there are things that everyone can do. I thought this theme of a hero building on people's talents through his relationships and learning to accept help when he needs it subverted the dark hero trope in a really special way.     I have played almost every Final Fantasy games since 1990. I enjoy how every FF game is unique and its own story. You don’t have to play any of the past games to enjoy the latest in the series. This one does a great job with combat, world building, and story. Great game and outstanding edition to this legendary series.

    Sincerelly I'm in love with this game. Story is being awesome, its not childish like foster Final Fantasies, the game grown more, has a great battle, you have more and more things to discover and get hyped with development of the plot. Will not be loved by everyone, but nothing will.

    But I must say that I HATE quick time events and there is a lot in this game, so, I can't give a 10.

    FF16 desires to be the best in the series however it does fall short but doesn't mean it's not a great FF game because it is. FF16 has improved what FF15 lacked in even though I feel FF15 did somethings better in my opinion. But that said FF16FF16 desires to be the best in the series however it does fall short but doesn't mean it's not a great FF game because it is. FF16 has improved what FF15 lacked in even though I feel FF15 did somethings better in my opinion. But that said FF16 is a step up and when I say this is by story, combat, and characters and my word the soundtrack is god tier possibly the best ost in a FF game it deserves a Grammy nomination for how gorgeous the soundtrack is. Voice acting is well done but a few hit and misses. FF16 is a game that has influences of God of War, DMC and Game of Thrones and a few others. It blends well to the overall arc and FF16 has the most appropriate lore menu to know the world and set of characters and environments. You can switch different types of abilities that you get as you progress in the game to do heavy combo attacks. You can make the game easier for you if you put necklaces like extra Gil, extra exp or successful dodging. I highly recommend you don't but if you find yourself struggling then by all means. The soundtrack is a masterpiece and it defines what a jrpgs are about! Any jrpg fans knows when you hear Latin chants and orchestra music you know stuff is gonna be epic. Characters are all great in their own way. But some don't get enough screen time and it's hard to care for them. Boss fights are epic, poetic it vastly the best part in the game. Now the bad.. technical issues. FF16 was never supposed to get a day one patch but was not the case however the patch didn't do nothing to fix the issues regarding the frames in performance mode and I mean it drops all over and that's not good especially when it was never supposed to get one til later after release. Hopefully the next patch fixes this issue. Side-Quests..well they are okay some are rewarding and some are just bland. Motion blur is terrible.

    From my experiences with FF16 with 20 hours playtime I can say it's a masterpiece in it's own way with a few minor issue that needs to be fixed asap. Other how great the story is, this not an open world but a liner road with semi open fields and valleys. Party is two or three depending on who is with you. If you need healing your K-9 will heal you if you ran out of potions. Crafting is a basic as it can get if you have the materials then your all good. The game does have a training grounds to test out your new abilities and there is an arcade mode you try out to get high scores in previous locations and play the bosses again if you like.

    My final score for FF16 is a 10, however this doesn't mean it's a perfect 10. I have debated if I should give it a 9 but if you fix the issues on a technical side it deserves a 10. FF16 bares out to be the best along side FF10 and 7 og.    … Expand

    Terrific story and characters. A marked improvement on FF15. Combat might not be to everyone's tastes but I liked it. Final Fantasy has always been about pushing the envelope and trying new things and this is no different.

I still think it deserves GOTY and I loved my experience, especially with the boss battles, combat, and characters. However, there were some unexpected low lights, mainly about story (unexpectedly) and game systems (especially crafting).

    it is a game that was built "in scope" and on time. Many of my wishes are for systems which could've likely been added with infinite time and resources. But game companies don't have those, so I can appreciate that. However, I did not expect to be disappointed by the story in the way I was, so that is really unfortunate. Still it has one of the best game stories I've played in recent memory and I really applaud it for that! I want other game devs to take the story in this game as inspiration; I just had maybe unfair levels of expectation for the story which I feel did not totally play out.

    Voice Acting - 10/10, honestly, I'd say 11/10. IMO there has never been better voice acting in a video game, period. Every actor gave themselves to their role, you could feel their pain, happiness, sadness, hope.

    Music - 10/10, There were no misses for me on the music. Every track was beautiful, emotional, fitting! The music was gorgeous. Soken NAILED it, you can feel his and his team's passion and talent.

    Eikon/Boss Battles - 10/10, The spectacle of these battles is something I've always dreamed of in video games. It's like dreams coming to life. Beautiful, immersive, exciting. Every Eikon battle, I felt delighted and a little anxious. Every single one kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was next! I LOVED these, I could never wait for the next one, what a treat!

    Characters - 10/10, Everyone is so well realized, even the most basic NPC in the Hideaway has something to share about themselves with Clive. The characters are deep, relatable, fun to interact with, interesting to learn about. I also think the character based side-quests are really effective.

    Combat 9/10 - The combat REALLY worked for me. As a person who loves FF eikons, enjoys action combat, but also enjoys simple, easy to understand systems, this combat system felt satisfying and fun. I have never experimented more with different builds mid-playthrough in a game. Normally I to find the most efficient way to engage with combat systems and don't experiment much, but this one encouraged me to try new abilities and I really enjoyed that! The only thing I wish is we could've used our ability points to customize the companion characters' fighting styles.

    Side Quests - 8/10, I think some will say there were too many side quests, but I'm not sure about that. I think there was a good amount. The dev team said they wouldn't just "make you kill 5 wolves for no reason" and they definitely delivered on that. Every side quest had a reason and they were effective for world building. I would've preferred more focus on the main characters in the side quests rather than side NPCs like Quintin, Martha, and L'ubor. Side Quests to help you learn more about Barnabas or Ultima for example could've helped and I didn't really care for those 3 hub characters.

    Game Systems - 7/10, This 7 sadly pains me, because Active Time Lore is a huge for me, I think every story game should have this. I read every entry multiple times. To the low lights: a massive low light for the game is crafting. It's really disappointing. As a person who loves to explore and see every inch of the map, at first I was excited that there were so many items to also collect. But there is no purpose for the literal 1000 bloody hides you will collect, despite helping Mid make a workshop. I was so excited, maybe we can use the Workshop to do projects for the hideaway? But no. The game really needs some use for all the crafting items you are given. The forge is ok, but all of the weapons are just straight upgrades. I wish there were some options, even if basic "make this one to do more will damage", or "make this one to gain more LB charge", IDK something unique. it was just +stats each time. I really think there was a missed opportunity to use the crafting items. Either make gear for your party members or make cosmetic items for the hideaway, something, anything!

    Story - 7/10, it's an epic FF tale and every aspect of the story related to the Eikons was compelling. Demo story - 10/10. Game story through Bahamut - 10/10. After, it starts falling to 6/10. I hated Barnabas and Ultima and they never paid off as villains for me. it is hard to relate to either of them. I had higher expectations for the villains as a CBU3 fan. I left the game adoring Clive, Jill, Joshua, Torgal and Dion. I did every side quest, and upon doing that and heading for Origin, I had real hope that we could give these characters peace. To end on tragic ambiguity was just gut wrenching. Did you have to? It was such painful ending that it did sour the journey for me a little.    … Expand

    Far exceeded my expectations. What a ride! Great English cast as well, I tend to play these in Japanese by tried English for this one and was not disappointed.

This games has it all, a rich and impactful story of adventure with well written characters who grow, a fun battle system that never gets old, and a score that heightens the games most memorable moments. 2023 has been a great year for gaming, and Spiderman2 has yet to hit.     Estou com 20h de jogo e posso dizer que as batalhas dos eikons e os gráficos estão épicos, gameplay insana a jogabilidade e muito boa mas o ponto forte é a história a cada capítulo fica a curiosidade de saber mais e qual será o final dela.     Good game, not genre-defining or something like a masterpiece. It's a solid game but a departure from RPG with inventory & party management that defined the FF series. I had a good time but felt bored from some tiresome fetch side quest.

    El inicio puede hacerse un poco lento, ya que hay mucho dialogo para introducir la historia, y uno solo quiere explorar y pelear para ver las mecánicas, pero una vez que agarra ritmo, no baja su intensidad. Respecto a las mecánicas de batalla y de mapa, es bastante similar a ffvii remake.

    My Game of The Year so far. Great combat, great story, great visuals, greats music, awesome action sequences and cut scenes. Final Fantasy successfully reinvents itself once again. Highly recommended.

If you're a fan of the series for the stories and characters, you won't go wrong here, and if you've avoided the series for, say, turn-based combat, the sixteenth installment offers the perfect opportunity to get started with this legend of the gaming industry.     New numbered FFs are good again. Stunning to look at, with new, punchy combat, and a great yarn, it is, if anything, too focussed, lacking a bit of the weird. [Issue#30, p.78]
