I bought into hype because of the “modern warfare” title once again. So I pre-ordered the game to play campaign early. Unfortunately, it felt more like a spinoff than a sequel.

Usually, sequels are set up by the previous titles. But in MW II, the story is being set up in a prologue. 10 years ago we killed a baddie, so the antagonist wants to take a revenge. Too bad Al-Asad was left out for lousy MW I spec ops. And Zakhaev was killed in a Warzone cutscene. The new villain, Hassan, is not interesting.

I’d much appreciate Farah’s brother who became a terrorist. That would be a great material for a misunderstood villain. All we know is that he was captured by CIA and that’s it lol. By the way, I cringed so hard when they let Hassan go.

I understand that the sequel didn’t want to continue the “occupation war” theme. So instead, they went with a corruption theme. Modern warfare is just about corrupt cops and army, so we fight cartel. This felt more like Battlefield Hardline as I had to chase a freaking mexican gang. I liked the first part for its “spec ops: the line” vibes. While replaying, Farah’s mission has deeply resonated with me because of the Russian war against Ukraine. The new game doesn’t care about that anymore.

I’ve also noticed that the game was trying to jump into different genres. There was a car chase mission that borrowed a lot from Uncharted. And then 1.5 missions with crafting features out of nowhere. That was odd! But when the series become repetitive, I suppose it’s no wonder the devs want to try something else.

And what’s up with the ghost team? The ads seemed like we’d see ghost team in more action. And Farah was supposed to be a part of it! What we got was a 1-time mission for the ghost team. Somehow, at the end of that mission, no one wore the ghost masks anymore. That was very raw.

Overall, I feel disappointed. I know that I shouldn’t bother because it’s just a COD 2K22. But the “modern warfare” games captured the best of my teenage years. That’s why I wanted the reboot to be just as good. I am a MW2 (2009) sucker!

    Menu is counter-intuitive

Multiplayer fails to find matches 99% of the time.

The initial download is 70+GB, takes hours, then when you finish and try to play ANY mode, it asks you to DL that mode... leaving you questioning, "what did I just download then, a giant/counter-intuitive menu?" Get out of here with the garbage narrative of "allows users to free up space by not downloading features they want"

Online connectivity is trash, classic reason I stopped paying cod a decade ago was dying right after rounding a corner (thinking you're safe) just to die because of connection inconsistencies.
No improvement in the last decade means these devs (or the corp they work for) do not care about quality, only profit. Which, they continue to receive when people, like me, get duped into buying a steaming pile of garbage like this for a AAA premium...

    They know what they're doing.

I would give the original MW2 a 9/10. This remake deserves a 0/10. I can't say the word enough - GARBAGE. Absolute TRASH. Avoid this game at all costs, as it will leave you feeling robbed of your time and money.

I will NEVER buy another COD installment because of the consistent, time-proven shortcomings of the teams & companies responsible for producing such trash and fleecing the public of their hard-earned money for an experience that seriously is just... NOT WORTH IT ANYMORE.

COD is a name of the past. Don't give this company your money!

Modern Warfare II is pretty in terms of stylistic realism, loud in terms of outstanding sound design, and ferocious in terms of gameplay. To start this off, the campaign is a bigger improvement over its predecessor as the story was quite a bit longer than the original. The things I was very impressed with is blending the war on drugs in Mexico inspired by Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario and nuclear warfare theme that made my walkthrough quite engaging where I did not expect this narrative to be so good. The old characters are back and brought back more depth and personality to the sequel and the introduction of the new characters like Alejandro and Valeria are a nice touch that added a unique flare in this installment. Is this the best campaign compared to the original Modern Warfare 2? No, but it is certainly fun in its own way. Level design in general is great, but not perfect compared to clean house from Modern Warfare. The villain in the game is bland and lack motivation just like Barkov. And General Shepherd, well he’s still General Shepherd. If I was honest, it is better than Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard by a mile. Now, there goes the pipebomb, MWII multiplayer is a big chaotic mess in terms of launch day content, ugly eyesore mobile-like UI, gameplay breaking GTA Definitive Edition-like bugs/glitches, and uninspired map design especially Border Crossing became a meme at launch. I honestly had difficulty playing the game as the game felt even more aggressive than the predecessor and less rewarding. And of course, special ops is mediocre at its finest but more aggressive to the point where I lose interest playing the co-op mode as enemies wear armor just like in the campaign. It is honestly a darn shame that most video game developers in the industry right now rely on updating the game monthly instead of completing the entire game before launch following Epic Games’ steps from Fortnite. It is like we offered cheese pizza instead of pepperoni on top without a special aftertaste. I love Call of Duty, but this trend in gaming needs to stop and I really do not think gaming will be fun soon anymore. Modern Warfare II is a great looking and playable sequel but lacks substance to the point where the game felt incomplete aside from a great campaign. Expand

The developers were too cheap and lazy to add all of that in the disc. It requires internet just to be able to play the campaign. I was on the verge of giving this game a negative score for that reason alone, but I would be in denial if I said I didn't have an absolute blast with this game. This game has tons of replay value with the multiplayer. There is even a third person mode in multiplayer.

The campaign has fun and diverse missions, although there are some parts of the campaign that can be annoying. It has good attention to detail and interesting moments. Very well paced. The story was okay I guess, didn't really care much about it. The gunplay and player movement are well designed. The graphics are biblical. The environments look stunning. You can play offline multiplayer, but there are only like 3 maps that you can play offline for some reason.

As I mentioned earlier, internet is required to play the campaign and offline modes. So once the developers decide to switch off the servers, you won't be able to play it unless you keep it installed in the PS5 I assume. I will eventually delete it, so it'll end up in the trash can. And the greedy developers had the audacity to charge $70 for this. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the multiplayer. Ground war is better and more balanced. No longer do I feel defenseless when I see a tank. The customization is good. The maps are well thought out compared to the recent CODs. The inclusion of the border crossing map and the F1 raceway map is a stroke of genius. There is even a third person person mode. The skull on the boxart has a cringeworthy face. This made me remove the cover paper off the game case and rip it into pieces. I recommend you get this game until it is like $30-$40.

Multiplayer - it's trash. I'm new to Playstation, but an experienced PC player. This is just worse than other shooters, you get matched against high level pros with camos and stuff, while you just started playing it. Totally a flop for me. Not worth buying this for multiplayer IMO.

Multiplayer is not perfect but compared to CoD games of the past few years it's pretty damn good. The new maps are fine overall, they are not too cluttered, and I'm looking forward to classic maps reportedly coming in the future. The seem to have pretty much nailed movement and gunplay. Movement seems smooth and pretty tame and I like the new visual recoil. I would also remove bunny hopping but that is just me. The UI is not that good, but the game itself runs very smoothly, which is the important part. Incidentally, people that still play on the PS4 are telling me that MW2 is already way smoother than Cold War ever was. In summary, given that this will be the CoD for the next two years, it could have been a lot, lot worse, so I'm quite satisfied with the result. It's sad that I have come to think like that, but for now I'm just happy to enjoy the game, hopefully the next installment doesn't ruin it. Expand

Visually speaking, Modern Warfare 2's campaign is strong, albeit a little underwhelming in some instances. The variety of locations and lighting is the big standout and makes it feel like you're covering new territory most of the time. That said, the story is just good enough to be mildly enjoyed but not a standout for shooters. Speaking of visuals, the multiplayer barely looks like an upgrade from the previous Modern Warfare entry. 120 Hz refresh rate is nice but I think we've hit that point where the refresh rate push needs to slow down - there's not enough return to warrant a constant emphasis on pushing that boundary. The eye can only see so many frames per second and refreshing the image beyond 60 times per second rapidly loses value. The tradeoff comes with the detail of the game and what you're encountering, whether in the campaign or in a multiplayer match. Granted, it's not like you're constantly checking out the environment when engaged in a firefight but you still like to have the immersion when you enter a game of this caliber.

Speaking more toward the gameplay and its variety - it's COD as usual. The baseline matchmaking content is there as it has been for decades. That stuff is fine - I'm getting close to being over normal matchmaking games though so while I do spend most of my time in this part of the game it's mostly because my friends are there - not because I feel it's the best experience. What is the best experience? In my opinion, it's in the other gameplay modes. There's a 3rd person combat experience (what a shakeup!) and a Battlefield-esque Ground War - no longer just a slightly larger standard map but rather a larger-scale experience with unique environments where you have a lot more room to move and quadruple the player count - quite a shift in dynamics and options. This is where I think Call of Duty has its most potential to grow. Vehicle play is pretty good, usually tight, but there's not a lot of emphasis on airborne combat - that's mostly left to killstreaks/scorestreaks while you scramble on the ground by foot or by tank/hummer.

Modern Warfare 2 is welcome simply because shooters are in a tough space. Halo fell apart within a few months of launching, Bethesda's Starfield got delayed, leaving you to play mostly Apex, Warzone 1.0, Destiny for the most polished shooter experiences. Speaking of Warzone, Warzone 2.0 launches a couple weeks after launch. As of this review it hasn't launched but I do look forward to mixing up the COD experience again with a revamped Warzone experience. My biggest complaint against Warzone 1.0 was its sluggish performance, limited framerate, sometimes janky controls. If 2.0 plays just like typical matchmaking I will be impressed and will find more enjoyment out of that kind of step forward. But that's technically not MW2 - that's a separate aspect of COD and just so happens to be releasing near MW2.

Modern Warfare 2 is pretty good it just doesn't standout well above the competition. It's greatest strength, if we're being honest, is it launched more polished than Battlefield 2042 and is likely set to receive consistent content updates and Battle Pass content every couple months. If you were waiting for Call of Duty to take a giant leap forward, I think it's safe to say that you are still waiting and it's likely that COD won't reshape its formula ever. Expect the studios relating to COD to have to release an entirely new IP that is much different, stands alone from COD. I actually expect that but that's a different conversation.

Personally believe it has the third best story mode in CoD (after original MW2 & BO ). It has some technical issues but no that much that bother you. Campaign is really good especially since Vanguard was so mediocre. COOP is better than what we had on previous modern warfare game in 2019 its more fun and less stressful. Multiplayer is the best part of this year's CoD and I definitely see my self playing this game for a full year or more as it is basically MW2019 but better and improved in almost every aspect.

It's a solid COD game but not better than MW2019. Graphically looks very good, sound effects are fantastic and the new gunsmith is a welcoming addition. However, maps are plain average (Some of them really bad), pretty much the same weapons, bad perk system and a disappointing campaign. I still recommend MW2 if you enjoyed MW2019.

The gameplay for the missions is one of the best and breaks tradition for COD game offering different types of styles and moods to each mission presented making each mission unique.

Multiplayer is a mix bag in a lot of ways as from what I've played. There are things in the game that have to be addressed such as the awful UI (User Interface) which was made by ex Hulu developers and it clearly shows. These types of menus should not be allowed in any triple A shooter game ever. The progression for weapons is questionable, in the past you'd mainly level up and once you got to say level 25 or something, you'd unlock a weapon. While that is still true here, there are now new ways to unlock not only guns but attachments as well. It will say in order to use this AR you have to level up a Marksman rifle to level 12 in order to use the AR you want. This is also the same for attachments like muzzles, barrels, grips etc. Making it feel like an unnecessary excuse to use guns that players may not want to use whether it's skill with the weapon or personal preference. The value of the game is bigger than any other COD launch with the amount of game modes in MP that if offers new and old ones combined, however the maps seem to be ehh at best and there isn't that many as compared to what Vanguard launched with most times you'll find yourself being bored playing the same map rotations and that can kill the reparability of the game. One of the modes Invasion, is set in the Ground War maps, but has both players and AI fighting in both teams. This is mode is amazing for XP and Weapon XP so if IW ever does a double XP event, go to that mode as you'll get XP for killing AI combined with getting player kills. New features like the firing range which is similar to the gun ranges we saw in both Advanced Warfare and COD WW2, it works the same way. You customize your gun and if you want to test it before going into public matches, you can hit the firing range button and test it out easily defiantly a great addition to bring back to COD and Warzone 2.

In terms of Spec Ops, it's better than what MW 2019 did but its not something you want to keep playing which just shows how Zombies for COD is a prime PVE mode rather than Spec Ops with only 3 missions and that's it. My take is that it will die out like MW 2019's spec ops did because of Warzone.

Overall, the game is a better value in terms of what you get for $69.99 across all platforms for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC in both Steam and Battle.net, but the main issues is just not really being casual and with problems that seem so overlooked for a COD game. We may have 2 years of this game, but Activision needs to step up and focus on quality rather than seeing how much money they can get out of our wallets in the store with all the bundles. It has great things and fun things to keep you playing, but not for a long time when SBMM comes in and turns matches into a CDL match. I enjoy this game, but it is nowhere near perfect and most focus already is going into Warzone 2 rather than focusing on the players that spent $70 on a game with missing features, glitches, sever issues and tick rate, horrible footstep audio, less maps, and a questionable weapon progression system makes this game not a look back in the glory days of COD, but trying to make a slower pace, try hard shooter FPS game that is not getting attention months after launch other than seeing what they can sell in the store for a quick buck.

Now besides that the games multiplayer is evolving into battlefield and battlefield is trying to become call of duty. What I mean is that it's slower gameplay as you have check your surroundings because in MW2 has a faster time to kill. Camping is more prevalent than before as it's a more viable strategy so that is something that will people will have to get used to. The really bad is the dang User Interface quite literally scrolling through the menu like I am scrolling through the menu on Hulu, second is the weapons progression which is a double edge blade as its good but a huge grind fest but it also feels as though attachments makes some of the gun worse than when you run without them, third is the perk system you get 2 base perks and then a level 2 perk unlocks after a certain time and a level 3 perk after even a longer amount of time so when you build a loadout you have to wait for the perk to activate to make gameplay more fun in which it doesn't feel like your class because you can't be fully geared and can counter a specific build until a certain amount of time has passed in which makes the game slower or more frustrating than it has to be. Currently the disable crossplay option for PS5 is merely cosmetic and does not function while playing multiplayer. Turned off crossplay chat off at the same time and found myself in a multiplayer lobby with random people pre-muted. Being unable to inspect their profile cemented this fact. The fact is that I spend most of my time playing multiplayer angry due to the BS fact that someone has a PC with 180 FOV pulling off a near 180 quick snipe on me every match. Multiple large maps are sniper heaven with close range dominating the few buildings that are there. Leaving little to no cover. It seems they pulled another lazy move of making maps for Warzone first and multiplayer second.

Is there a Multiplayer with 12 yo dominating the chat and screaming in your ear if you forget to mute all? Ouch.

Are there Kill Streak Rewards for bumping the already strong players and punishing their cannon fodder? Double Check.

Is the single player riddled with the same "run to point X and the enemy respawns will stop" trigger type maps? Oh yes!

Is there a level where you have to jump from car to car, while driving a car yourself, shooting out enemies and obstacles while driving and then jumping out of the car before it explodes to hijack another car driving at full speed - a level which is so painstakingly maddening that its designers should be bumped down to replay it for all enternity to see how dumb that design is? A somewhat droll campaign will greet players of Modern Warfare II. It's a short bombastic romp with some fun gunplay moments and fantastic graphics. The multiplayer, however, is a miss as it is no longer a properly combined entity and the lack of replayability is disappointing. A recommendation for CoD fans but for anyone even slightly on the fence perhaps keep shopping or waiting for a sale.

CoD MW 2 is a refreshing single-player experience, providing players with some of the best action-packed moments and great characters, but riddled with multiplayer balancing issues and extreme performance and technical problems. It still is CoD and is fun for anyone who finds its casual shooting gameplay compelling, but it plays safely and doesn’t present itself as something revolutionary for the franchise.
