A terrific revival of a genre with plenty of life to give. Brilliant, slick controls and funky vibes have you owning the streets, but could use more challenge. [Issue#32, p.69]

Taking inspiration from Jet Set Radio, this game effortlessly carries on its legacy. With great gameplay mechanics, a deep story, and fantastic music Bomb Rush Cyberfunk raises the standard for indie games and making it one of the best indie games you'll play this year.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is a modernised love letter to Jet Set Radio that combines fun and stylistic gameplay, with a kaleidoscope of updated Dreamcast-era visuals and sound to create a sequel in everything but name. We may never see Sega release another Jet Set Radio again, but this is the next best thing and an exciting foundation for the future.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is no doubt a worthy successor to Jet Set Radio. That’s not to say the game is perfect; there are some notable issues, such as falling through the floor on occasion, as well as the aforementioned poor combat sections. But those issues don’t detract from this still being one of the most fun games released this year.

Bomb Rush Cyberfunk may come across as nostalgia bait and falter with the tagging, combat and difficulty. However, as a homage to Jet Set Radio, it succeeds while offering some neat little twists.

    Good-
Nails the atmosphere and aesthetic of Jet Set Radio, especially with the cutscenes. Interesting story with involving characters.
    Good-
Nails the atmosphere and aesthetic of Jet Set Radio, especially with the cutscenes. Interesting story with involving characters. Controls feel nice and responsive.

    Bad-
Not very challenging, and mechanics like tagging feel overly simple. Combat gets the job done but still feels awkward. Gameplay loop can feel repetitive when it comes to challenging rival gangs.

    Thoughts-
If Bomb Rush Cyberfunk achieves anything, it’s in proving that there’s truly no such thing as “The End” on the streets. It’s a story that will live on, hopefully creating as many interpretations of Jet Set Radio’s legacy as it does glorious homages. Maybe it could serve as a base for Team Reptile to flesh out its ambitions and flex its design muscles. For now, I’m content in basking in the nostalgia, even if it doesn’t outright transport me back to the glory days of the Dreamcast.
