Powerful Wizard Kings have returned to the realms to reign as gods among mortals, and players will rise to challenge their rule using Tomes of Magic to unleash arcane destruction and evolve their armies, gaining new abilities and forms. For the first time in the series, players can create their own custom factions, and leave their mark on countless worlds through each choice they make. Create the Empire of Your Wildest Fantasies: Craft your followers by combining bodily forms, societal traits, and arcane powers. Build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves, or recreate your favourite fantasy tropes. Seek powerful tomes of magic to enchant your armies and see your people physically change as they morph into angelic beings or scions of chaos to face their enemies. Strategy Meets Role-Playing Like Never Before: Every choice opens up new possibilities and tactical advantages; deep, multilayered strategy allows you to try new tactics or explore new powers at every turn. Tactical turn-based battles bring your armies to life, from skirmishes with roaming monsters to vast sieges with many units on each side. Write Your Own Legend: A new event system provides unexpected levels of storytelling for 4X games. See your decisions shape the world around you as you seek glory through brutal domination, cunning alliances, or ultimate arcane knowledge. Your own creations may even appear as potential rivals or allies in subsequent games, as you experience the next chapter in your own story. Make Your Mark on a Vast, Reactive World: Explore a new realm in each session – or create your own! Challenge new variations and combinations of locations and features, from frozen wastelands ruled by ice queens to desolated ruins where dragons roam. With a tremendous variety of empires, units, and environments to keep the game endlessly replayable, Age of Wonders is more open-ended – and mod-friendly – than ever before in the series’ history. You’ll find yourself with more saves than you know what to do with and still be excitedly coming up with ideas for what unique creation you want to try next. [Issue#28, p.90]

A massive and complex fantasy themed 4X strategy game, made appealingly straightforward thanks to its cleverly refined interface.

Age of Wonders 4 offers a rare and refreshing level of flexibility for a 4X game, allowing you to customize your leader, people, and realm to an impressive degree. This can be a bit bewildering at first, and the level of complexity threatens to overwhelm the game’s limited tactical battles, but it all comes together as a satisfying package after a bit of trial and error. Age of Wonders 4 may not be the perfect potion for all turn-based strategy fans, but it should enchant a good portion of them.

I keep learning something new and starting a whole new character and tribe to take this knowledge into a new game. Each time I do this I see something cool and unique. Having built my character and tribe I feel invested in getting them to prosper. The presentation, art style and graphics are reminiscent of other great games in the genre. I can confidently say I will be playing a lot of this game for a long period of time. Expand

My negative critic is bassed on the games perfomance on console.
It crashes quite often (tested on 2 consoles) and when it doesnt the games perfomance degrages drastically with playtime even in the tutorial map up to a point where it seems as if the game has crashed again but then suddenly after about half a minute of a frozen screen with no sound playing it resumes to let the player take action.

The game doesnt look bad, but isnt all shiny neither, it doesnt need to because it isnt a focus point.
It offers diplomacy, though the AI doesnt really negotiate but ditcates what it wants for any trade.
The system around declaring war is okay, penalizing for surprise invading by reducing the rate at which a certain ressource is gathered or grants a bonus in case the war is considered rightful.
The units system is actually good, of course lending to the basis of different established unittypes like Sword+Shield to block of the enemy, Cavalry for breaking through, Pikeniers to prevent Cavalry attack, Range units and Support units for healing or buffing up ones own army or weakening the enemy army.
The strongpoint here is the upgrades to each unit that the player can unlock to define his own style of fighting on the rather small battlefields.
This is important as the games victory types all require the player to have quite a strong army to either conquer all enemy capitals or defend structures that will be required for 2 of the other victory conditions - in essence it is the same, but the trigger to activate them is different: either by research or by growing large.

With all that being said: it is a fun game to play when it doesnt crash, and when it does I gladly just use the last automatic saved point of progress or a few turns before that.
