    Thoughts-
A Plague Tale: Requiem is an absolute gem of a game. It’s not flawless, but it outdoes its predecessor in just about every way possible. Most of the improvements it makes might seem small and very iterative in isolation, but all of those smart changes come together to deliver a gameplay experience that feels significantly meatier and, as a result, much more enjoyable- and of course, the story, in spite of some writing inconsistencies, continues to shine. If A Plague Tale: Innocence laid down a solid foundation, Requiem builds a sleek and impressive tower on top of it. It’s one of the best games of the year.

Now, the graphics, yes sir, take off your hat, glorious. If you don't like stealth don't buy it and the story in my opinion is great. Very good game, worth every penny.
But really, what surprised me the most are the graphics, and I played many games with very good graphics, but in this one especially they are wonderful.

There are still a couple of things which the dev can improve for their future games. Like some players has pointed out, 30 fps is a bit on the lower side and the controls seems to be a bit slow. The gameplay might feels a bit repetitive, but for the game hours its just good enough.

Since the last game they added Naughty Dog style set pieces as the environment around you constantly seems to be falling apart. Above all there is a sense of meaningful journey in terms of distance that you cover, enemies that you fight and the development of main characters. Side characters have their own minor story arcs and seem likeable. The quality of ending might be subjective but I side with those who claim it ended on good note providing poignant closure to the entire journey that encompasses two games - at the same time avoiding any major plot holes or inconsistencies. Eventually it's all coming together and starts making sense.
As for the flaws - combat is as clunky as it was in the first game. Certain combat encounters in which Amicia takes on nothing short of entire army look absurd even for the videogames standard. Instead of dying instantly on contact with enemy - like in last game - Amicia can now withstand one hit from most enemies but there is a larger variety of them as some of them throw spears and fire projectiles from the distance while some of them charge at you head on. Fully upgraded crossbow with retrieveable bolts is way OP especially during later encounters.
Weak performace is a big let-down. The game runs at 30 fps most of the time but every now and then it suffers from drops below 30 fps. The trade-off is that the game indeed is visually stunning but the lack of performance mode is a downer. On the good side - no game-breaking bugs and just one crash throughout the game.

Everything is fantastic but the animation of the face while in the live game ( not in the cutscenes) is poor just like the robot, the story excellent but it's not good enough, I was expecting more explanation for the plague, I don't care about fps too much but in ps5 was enjoying a little pit

Beautiful and heartbreaking. Loved the game and could barely put it down for hours. Graphics look amazing and I love the new crossbow you get. Story really makes you want to keep fighting and the game has left me emotionally raw. Had a few weird moments with enemies that seemed to spot me but I couldn’t see them but nothing game breaking or too bothersome.

This is my first time writing a review. I don't usually feel the need to share my experience and thoughts after watching a movie/tv show or playing a video game but A Plague Tale Requiem was such an epic, overwhelming and immersive adventure that I am not yet ready to let go off yet that I HAVE to take some time to write something to honor it.

This is my first time writing a review. A Plague Tale Innocence was the first game that I played on the Playstation 5 after I bought it. I had no high expectations but I instantly fell in love with Amicia and Hugo. The visuals, the setting, the story, the OST - everything was perfect. The same goes for Requiem. The latter is an amazing follow up to the first game. The story is powerful, it explores even more the bond between Amicia and Hugo but it also introduces us to strong and endearing characters such as Sophia and Arnaud. I wasn't able to let go off my controller, I wanted to know what happened in the next chapter but I also wanted to take it slow because I didn't want my adventure with Amicia, Hugo & their friends to end. And when I finally got to that ending, oh boy, was I heartbroken.

A Plague Tale Requiem is a real next-gen beast. Visually it's just perfect - even though the 30 fps is hard to swallow, you get over it after witnessing the incredible story and visuals unfold before your eyes. The music adds another layer and depth to the game. Just like Naughty Dog did with TLOU 2, Requiem goes deeper and deeper into its characters and makes them human... you almost forget that these are animated fictional characters and you start feeling happy, sad and angry whenever they too feel those emotions.

A Plague Tale Requiem might be one of the best games of the year 2022.

This game did a stupendous job at taking the good stuff with its predecessor and building on it, both story-wise and gameplay-wise. I'm personally not too big of a stealth gamer, but I still really enjoyed playing.

A Plague Tale: Requiem takes place six months after the first game, where Amicia and Hugo defeated Grand Inquisitor and foiled the Inquisition’s malicious plans. Hugo still has the sickness, Macula, in him. They thought his powers were under control, but they are awoken yet again. With that comes the rats that literally destroys everything and kill all people in sight. But, there’s a hope; in Hugo’s dreams he sees an island where he thinks lies the cure for his illness.

So, that’s pretty much the basic storyline. It surely has twitst and turns, and all kinds of new characters are introduced in the game. The gameplay is pretty much the same, but this time Amicia and Hugo has new moves in they use. The only thing that I must say immediately, that the game introduces new moves throughout the game, but then they aren’t basically used anymore in the game. It introduces lots of other things, but seems like they had too many ideas and the game would’ve benefit for it being more simple.

THE SAME GAMEPLAY ISSUES THAN BEFORE
Then comes the bugs that might just ruin your gameplay completely. There are scenarios where I had to sneak amongst the enemies and also deal with the rats. Amicia had lots of different items she can use, then there’s the light that have to be used against the rats (because they are afraid of it), then there’s the soldiers that varies, meaning some I can kill and some I cannot because they have armor on them. So it is a lot to think about and to do. In these situations, where even millimeter out of light might get me eaten by rats, and I have a NPC with me that might suddenly run somewhere and die. Or the janky gameplay in general get me killed. So, there’s lots of dying and fustration with this game, in all together. So don’t expect perfect and polished game at all, it still has the same issues like they had with the first game.

What comes to the overall length of the game; it is a way too long. This is an issue what I see in lots of games. They don’t know when to just cut things off. Every time when I thought that the game is about to end, a new thing happened and the game went on. It was very much like this: a peaceful moment with Amicia and Hugo and everything is fine, then the rats came and destroyed the whole city and ate all the people, then they have to survive through it and soldiers, then a peaceful moment again… so it was very much rinse and repeat. It only took so much until the effect of it dies.

Visually, the game looked a-ma-zing!! I took so many screenshots and used photo mode all the time. The game is gory and dreadful, and it’s not even shy about it. The game is very emotional and the storytelling is good. What makes it even better, is the voice acting, which was great, but might get little used to first. The relationship between Amicia and Hugo feels genuine, and it’s very endearing.

The puzzles, the few that were introduced, weren’t that hard to solve. There was only one puzzle that took me a while to solve.

    THE FINAL VERDICT
A Plague Tale: Requiem is a good game. It is longer than the first one. It introduces new characters, huge areas and cities, new gameplay mechanics and graphically it is a very polished game. I liked the story, even though the game was a way too long and streched. Do I recommend it, is it a must play? Yes, it is.

There is not enough mode with 60 frames per second, because it was possible to add such a mode, even at a resolution of 1080p, as well as voice acting in Russian, since reading subtitles is very distracting from the gameplay and does not allow you to properly immerse yourself in the game. The rest turned out to be quite an exciting adventure.

For me there was a lack of familiarity from the get go, which isn’t bad but I wanted the story to continue, the change in amicas voice took a while to get used to (which to honest was an massive improvement as the faux French that was well almost laughable before ) it disconnected me from the character and then…the graphics… when moving the game stuttered frequently, such a shame as when standing still or during cut scenes was gorgeous, this was infuriating as the previous game ran so smoothly so that’s the 2points lost there.
I found the game more challenging due to the larger environments and had appreciation to the new management/weapon system, the new characters were good, and the addition to the knife was welcomed, I did find myself missing the old upgrade system though as finding basic parts just weren’t as exciting to find as that piece of leather etc that you could use to upgrade or make luminosa for extra exploration or save self from infestation.
The story held up and I hope the story continues if not in an another sequel some dcl. Hugo was annoying but didn’t expect him to die, maybe his voice will forever live in Amicias head who knows but in honesty if not for the graphics I’d easily give this a 9/10

I played this on Xbox Game Pass (PC) on its release day. While I enjoyed the story but encountered so many bugs/glitches that prevented me from continuing the story. I literally got stuck around Chapter 2's puzzles because the interactions disappeared. Hopefully, if the bugs/glitches are fixed, I'd recommend it since the story was good. But if it's still broken, I'd recommend waiting a bit.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was both beautiful and decently okay, my problem with this game lies with the fact that Beatrice, Arnaud, and Lucas appear again very late, only just to be killed off. What was the point of reintroducing these characters into the story again just for them to die? We could've at least gotten some time to spend with them before they died. And yes, I am aware Lucas didn't die but still.

Another issue I had with this game is that we only mainly get to spend time with one character for the whole duration of the story, which is Sophia. I wish we could've gotten to explore the other personalities of the characters. Overall, the story was okay, it felt like a wild goose chase only to find death. But A Plague Tale Requiem is such a major improvement from the first game.

I wish i liked the game more. I loved the first one, but this... Boring story, lack essence from the first one. Extremely overpowered main character that destroy the realistic-fiction feeling, is that a sling or a machine gun? Scuffed and clumsy combat system. Stupid enemies.

There are certain moments within the narrative that could have been made in a different way, and still deliver the dramatic effect the game carries from the beginning. The lack of justification for some of the narrative choices is sad, and they wasted a series of possibilities which could have made the game much better.
Hopefully they will stop at the second one, and not carry on with the series.

    Pros:
    Beautiful graphics
    Incredible sound effects
    Tense action

    Cons:
Feels disconnected from the first one, almost as if they didn't like any possibility of a mildly pleasant ending.
The lip sync is for English only, and considering it is a game in XIV century France, that is very disappointing.
Story way too tragic, feels excessive and could have been less so.
Some action scenes (running from rats) are repetitive and unnecessary.
The aesthetics the Amicia embraces feels kinda forced and out of place. She is a French teenager in the XIV century, and the trans-gender-neutral aesthetic is very XXI century.

Overall, a good game, but I really think they exaggerated on the "Last of Us" narrative and created a unnatural and over the top narrative of their own.

There's an interesting skill system which allocates skill points to you according to how many enemies you kill. On the other hand, upgrade crafting mechanic is downgraded. In the first game you collect 3 types of rare material and 3 common types of resources. In Requiem there are no rare materials and common resources are for crafting throwables only. Rare materials are reduced to a boring "currency" called "pieces". This is not enough to motivate you to look for materials or even bother opening chests.

Stealth and combat make only 10 % of the game. The rest 90 % is either walking, "cinematic experience gameplay" (running) or cutscenes. Moreover, the game often dictates your walk speed, forbids you to use throwables in certain areas and if not, it can cancel the effect of them on rats. Even the largest area is for "exploration" only. This direction of the game is pretty disappointing. The game is 17h long (Innocence 11h) which is too much for a very story driven game. It has rather slow pacing with the beginning chapters being fetch quests. The story doesn't move until the 11th chapter (there are 17).

The devs chose "great cinematic scenes" over gameplay. The game drops below 15 fps in fiery and rat flooded areas.

Good graphics and interesting story, really bad and clunky gameplay like Innocence. They introduce nice new mechanics but they are used only once or twice. You will need lots of patience with the controls and the trial and error.

Terrible frame rate issues + A strong narrative with great voice acting (sans aforementioned annoying kid) - with gameplay hampered by the same old and trodden mechanics that were part 1's weakness - along a hefty difficulty curve, as was the case in Part 1.

The gameplay mechanics did not change from the first iteration, in all that's bad and good about them - they are repetitive "escape the rats with casting light on stuff" riddles that become increasingly complex. The graphics are the high part of the second showing, as is the voice acting.

And yes, Hugo still has the same annoying kid voice as in the first part. Amicia is playing the role of tough strong female and has some new tricks up her sleeve - but many of the old mechanics are regurgitated ad nauseam. You'll find yourself looking desparately for what the devs must have thought obvious places to advance in a room (hint: most of them are not obvious) - voice cues should give hints but some are confusing even more as to what the solution might be.

That said, it's a strong story with a mystical element as to what the sickness really is - and how to get rid of it and a strong narrative is presented throughout the same stale gameplay mechanics that were making the first part frustrating for many, me included.

Huge waves look cool, no doubt. The landscapes are beautiful also, but I honestly can’t say it’s something unique.
The story is great as well, might be not my cup of tea, but I get why people like it. Won’t say much here, there is enough written in other reviews
But what’s with gameplay? I might be missing something, but it just doesn’t seem to work. Whats the point of all this “rpg elements”, skill tree, upgrades if it basically change nothing. The only real purpose of all this hidden chests is just to give you motivation to explore the levels and that’s it. All this upgrades might give you a small advantage but why would you need it? In a nutshell the game is just a linear sequence of puzzles. So if you are already good enough in solving this puzzles, you would get advantage in solving them, so if they are already easy enough they would only get easier. Like what’s the point? I’m not an expert in game design but this approach really seems to be awful. And there is almost always all the necessary resources laying just in place where they are needed so it’s not a big deal to figure out what should you do
Normally, if you are unable to complete the quest in RPG you just go grind somewhere else and then return when you get enough power/skills/resources. Here all this is pointless because you always have enough resources Apart from that it’s a nice game

There was something "off" from the start, but then, with that ending and the lackluster gameplay throughout the whole thing... I feel nothing, but regret for myself for wasting my time or getting excited for it in the first place.
As much as I loved the first game, I was disappointed with the second one. We spent the whole first game growing our power and relationships, just to make it all meaningless in the second game. I get resetting power level, but character growth? Relly? It's so disappointing, especially when Amicia was the one acting like a child.
On top of that, at one point the suffering was just too much and the game became just a depressing walking simulator.
I've seen people praising it for tackling the topic of terminal illness, and that's fair I guess, but I don't think the message the devs were tying to convey hit the mark or left any positive(!) impact. If you have been so unlucky in life to experience something like this, then this game to you is just pure torture p*rn.
I gave it a 5 because there were interesting parts, sometimes the story did make me wonder what would happen next and the few longer gameplay segments were fun.... but it still can't be compared to the last game.

It makes me sad - knowing how excited I was for it, how much I wanted to love it and now being disappointed by it.

I guess there is only so much you can do with fire and light.

Even the different sections where they try to make it interesting by ramping up the action are just frustrating as you'll likely just die continuously until eventually by trial and error you manage to get through. It's the same with stealth as it's never entirely clear whether you'll be spotted or not.

Then we get to the performance, luckily I have a 120hz screen so am able to play at 40fps, but at 1440p I really don't think that's good enough, and there are quite a lot of frame rate dips below it. I don't believe in 2022 40fps is adequate, the graphics are nice but don't justify this sacrifice on next gen consoles, 60fps I believe is entirely achievable there's just some serious optimisation to be made to get there,

Overall, I found this a nice looking, interesting story but I couldn't face the constant terrible combat/stealth/puzzle sequences, I didn't find the story worthwhile to put up with those so ultimately didn't make it to the end

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Loved the first game, but this one fell apart so fast. First of all Amicia just wont shut up for the first half of the game. She only has one mode: panicky. It doesn't make any sense in the context of the previous game's story. She's constantly losing her sht and the voice actress overacts so much. This is so weird since the previous game was NOT like this.

Then we have the story. My goodness was I annoyed and bored out of my mind playing this with my gf. Arnaud tries to kill Amicia and Hugo, but then SUDDENLY, for no reason whatsoever he saves them. There is even a sequence with him where he WILL kill you if he catches you, constantly taunting Amicia. Oh, then he's just your ally, because this is the level of writing. I would sometimes just blurt out loud "maybe the frenemies were the enemies we made along the way".

Hugo ends up literally just chasing a blatant lie, there is no cure. We of course could have suspected this from the very start, but the story thinks it's being clever trying to trick us. Really, the BEST thing that could have been done from the very start would have been for Amicia to put a rock in Hugo's head and spare all the millions he kills. This is what ends up happening anyway.

Did I mention Huge kils a sh1ton of people? It's hard to relate to the little sh1t since he doesn't feel any remorse whatsoever. Oh, neither does Amicia who should know better how Hugo is a walking disaster.

At one point they split off from Lucas and their mother and I get the feeling they couldn't give two fks about the people they were supposed to care about in the first game.

They reach an island where the "cure" was supposed to be. Locals have a legend about a child of embers, phoenix tropes, blah blah. Turns out the Count, the main villain, just made that all up because his wife is crazy, but somehow Hugo has a vision of this at the start of the game? Why? Because the Macula curse "tricked" Hugo? Huh?

Amicia has these utterly stupid girlboss moments, but she gets slapped down every time. The toxic female empowerment here is off the charts, but somehow the writers thought they shouldn't push it too hard. It doesn't make much sense anyway since at one point you find Amicia's predecessor who took down like 40 soldiers. Yeah, sure she did, you slay queen in a universe where it's accepted that strength and armor do matter in a fight. Heck, a dude wouldn't have been able to do that, especially given the puny size of her predecessor's armor. This even happens in a fight were Amicia is injured and stupidly tries to use a two handed sword with one arm. She gets sliced up good, but is fine 5 minutes later.

By the way, it was never really clear where the rats came from. Turns out they really are magical and are created in these huge disgusting pods. So when Hugo first arrives on the island he says he can't feel them. Then you find like a zillion under the island in a nest. The nest is literally formed of tens of thousands of skeletons. Like, how could people not have noticed this and kept coming to a remote island that literally couldn't house the population found in the rat nest?

Then there's the tonal shifts. The game will literally be at its most doom and gloom, yet they find some flower and are cheery all of a sudden.

Look, this game should never have been made. It's a shameless cashgrab with a story that is forced, the worst kind of sequel. Stick to the first one.

A disgusting game, as well as the developers who could not get their hands out of their asses to make 60fps.

    Boring, slow game.
Great graphic and beautiful story, but its a very boring game. No gameplay upgrades from first game. Could play 3 chapters only and then get bored

That little kid that you have to escort around 100 % of the time is annoying. And you can't kill him or throw him to the wolves. Who the hell wants to play a never ending escort mission???

Sad that you don’t get the same experience as PC or Xbox. Looks great IF YOU STAND STILL.

No day one patch even after a few days after the game is launched. Game performance is bad and not an amazing experience for a PS5 player.

So, I never got over what happened to Joel. And now this game. I think, I will stop playing games like that. That’s enough.

Voices in English are not good, in Spanish even worst. Maybe good to play in french, bat it could be tedious if you are not a french speaker. I don't know where all the positive reviews are coming from. Expand

its one of the most boring game ive ever played, there are so many sneak mission, and all you do is wait, and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait. and wait so more.

By the time youve finished waiting and sneaked pass, you do not even care anymore, because you've so tediously bored.

This isn't a game, its a screen saver.

„Remember no preorders”, what a great slogan! I am afraid that we living in times when we need to write a new one. Remember don’t buy games on day one. The game would be easy 8-9/10. But on PS5 it’s a disaster. OK if the game is 30 frames at all times (that’s nonsense too) I can manage, but that drops it’s a slap for your face when you paid 60 bucks. Don’t buy it wait for 60 frames patch.„Remember no preorders”, what a great slogan! I am afraid that we living in times when we need to write a new one. Remember don’t buy games on day one. I don't know what to say.I'm dissappointed because some things are not smooth. The game looks great yes but it didn't blow me away with some huge ''wooow'' effects. Maybe the game isn't for me.I played the first one and I had more fun with it.

This game is a huge steaming pile of garbage. The story is poorly written. I point and laugh every time at the developer's pathetic attempt at trying to make the game "hit hard". The only thing that hits hard in this game is the FPS. The greedy developers are charging $60 for a next-gen game that runs at only 30 FPS. Are you freaking kidding me? This game is on a PS5 console. The only thing that hits hard in this game is the FPS. The greedy developers are charging $60 for a next-gen game that runs at only 30 FPS. Are you freaking kidding me? This game is on a PS5 console. There is literally no excuse as to why these developers can't add a performance mode in their $60 game. It just goes to show how cheap and lazy these developers are. The physics are trash. The gameplay is boring and repetitive.

There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $60 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. That little kid could have made for a decent co-op, but the developers were too greedy and lazy for that. Speaking of that kid, he is annoying. If I could just RKO that annoying kid in this game, I would rate this higher than a 0. I don't recommend this boring game at all.

P.S. Hey Metacritic, are your mods full of children? I have an opinion. Like it or not, learn to accept it. How dare I give a game a 0 for failing to meet my high standards for $60 games. It doesn't even have a performance mode on PS5 for goodness sake, and I can't give them a 0? Not to mention that you chose to make 0 an option in this site.

Very Boring Story, Very bad Animations and Lip Sync. Here and there some good looking Landscapes but destroyed cause of boring Gameplay mechanics. Only good can be the graphics when you stand still. When you move the choppy Framerate gives you Headache.

Poor graphics and poor optimization for next-gen console (30fps and not even 4k). As soon as you move, the graphics get ugly

By the time A Plague Tale: Requiem concludes, it will feel like being dragged by a pick-up truck, across miles of concrete. The world depicted is a bleak and cruel one with no light at the end of the tunnel. Players will be getting their money's worth, as this is a very long game that is punctuated with lots of gimmicky sequences that add value to the package. The story does have a lot for fans to discuss, and the visuals are amazing, even if they came at the cost of a high frame rate. The gameplay is technically better than the first, but it was never amazing to begin with. The over reliance on prebaked contextual actions and the rigidness of simplistic stealth is something most could expect from a seventh gen console title, not a ninth gen console release.

If you are on a quest to find a video game that could make you cry, may your quest end right here. A continuation of a story that was fine on its own, Requiem delivers one of the most powerful stories ever conceived in a video game. But be wary of the framerate drops on the PlayStation 5 console, which bring their own set of unforeseen despair.

An essential purchase if you enjoyed Innocence, and an imperfect but gripping starting point if you missed it. Hopefully not the end of the tale. [Issue#21, p.80]
