In its best moments Vampyr is an atmospheric action roleplaying game with great dialogue and motivating battles. But you also get your fair share of limited exploration as well as all-you-can-loot-mentality that is more constricting than helpful.

For those looking for a unique, dread-filled experience in the RPG realm, Vampyr offers a type of game seldom seen. But much like the streets of 1918 London, expect a few bumps along the way.

Ultimately, Vampyr is definitely a game worth playing, even if just for the moral choices and the fine character building Dontnod managed to achieve. Don't get this one if you're expecting a combat-heavy RPG with your favorite vampire character.

Awkward at times, the developer's ambition is obvious but the effort never quite comes to fruition. In other words, it doesn't suck but it lacks bite. [Issue#151, p.81]

Vampyr is a far more interesting social simulator than it is an action game.

Vampyr would’ve been far better as Jonathan Reid’s Point and Click Tale of Moral Adversity than what we got, which was essentially Jonathan Reid’s Mashy Exercise in Combat Frustration Sparsely Sprinkled With Plot. Games do not need combat sequences if those sequences do not serve the game’s themes and story.

An inspired use of the usual vampire clichés with some fascinating moral decisions to make, that always impact the game world and its combat in unexpected ways.

Vampyr has a great universe, a great narrative and a great concept, although the execution is a little bit flawed. We’ve enjoyed it even with its flaws so, if you are just a little bit interested in the story and the setting, give it a try.

Vampyr is a slow burn of an RPG, taking its time to ramp up its intriguing blend of science and the supernatural in an elaborately gloomy version of London. When it gets going you can see the potential of the way it offers you more power if you consume its interesting citizens. But Vampyr never commits to this idea to the point where I felt I needed to make that sacrifice to succeed in its relatively simple combat, which leaves it feeling toothless and vulnerable to having a lot of its fun sucked away by technical issues, despite its genuinely engaging story.

Vampyr serves delicious ladles of angst and drama with a hearty slice of excellent, morally grey choice system that will genuinely surprise you, all wrapped up in a wonderfully gloomy London. It's just a shame the combat turns a bit sour.

And yet, the credits roll on Vampyr with the realization of how seldom we see an open-world RPG experience like this, where being a citizen with a responsibility to a place and its people feels personal, even if that investment lies in who looks delicious tonight. Vampyr is certainly shaggy and rough in the technical department, but its narrative successes still make for an impactful and worthwhile experience.

As much a detective story as a horror one, Vampyr rewards you for taking an interest in the people around you and tests your moral compass with a lack of black and white options.

Vampyr is very ambitious and presents a lot of cool and interesting ideas, but just doesn’t quite hit its mark.

Despite the strikingly different premise from Life is Strange studio Dontnod, the team's expertise in characterisation and world-building dovetail neatly into this vampire romp. Reid's world is full of detail and flavour, its cast fully-realised and three-dimensional. It's just frustrating that its clumsy combat and limited loot detract from its otherwise unique ideas and exhilarating story.

Vampyr's social web is intriguing, but bland combat and a conflicting premise hold it back. [Aug 2018, p.70]

Vampyr is both amazing and irritating. Yes, the fighting system is very forgettable and the level-design is frustrating, but the world and the NPC are so great you’ll have a good time anyway.

Through the fog awkward mechanics and unsatisfying decisions (not to mention some dumb story twists), the fun and intriguing core of Vampyr is sometimes visible. Unfortunately, that fog lifts only rarely, leaving most of the experience shrouded in darkness.

Although this gives us more of a grounded portrayal of Reid’s character, it makes the game frustrating and overwhelming at times. Vampyr is full of promising concepts, excellent character building, and lifelike communities, but ultimately Reid's bloodlust can't help but get in the way.

Vampyr has a ton of interesting ideas, an intriguing world, and a great cast of characters, but is ultimately let down by its narrow-minded focus on unnecessary combat.

Although flawed and at times painfully inconsistent, Vampyr manages to offer relatively engaging gameplay in spite of a lack of overall polish. Combat is stiff and quite mindless, but Jonathan's progression deeper into Vampiredom is handled well and the abilities at his disposal go a long way towards masking some of the more mundane aspects of the battle system.

Much like its early 20th century setting, Vampyr feels like a bit of a throwback to a past age of action RPGs. In a time where the genre is evolving Vampyr holds on to past ideas for much of its tenure, and it doesn’t have a story strong enough to overcome that fact. The world itself is ripe for lots of stories to be told within, with Dontnod having done a good job with world building, but while Vampyr isn’t a bad game, nor is it as great as it could be.

The story may be a tad lackluster, and the combat may be clunky as hell, but Vampyr does offer a compelling adventure for those looking for some blood-sucking fun.

Vampyr wastes its setting and premise on tedious combat and a story that’s much longer than it needs to be. Technical problems and dimwitted AI make progression a chore, while the striking locations become mundane. Just a few standout characters and excellent story moments help Vampyr claw out of the grave from disaster to mediocrity.

Vampyr is a set of ideas that cohere on paper but not in practice, coupled with a dreary setting that becomes less atmospheric the longer you spend with it. [Issue#322, p.114]

Vampyr competently displays an understanding of combat, dialogue, and narrative choice, but it never rises above mediocrity, and is an utter failure on a technical level. The aesthetic of the world is the best thing on display, but beyond it lies a derivative title that fails to leave a lasting impression.

Vampyr sports an interesting cast and a compelling morality tale with unexpected twists and turns, but it's horribly weighed down by performance issues, dull combat at best and a city that's a chore to traverse.

With my review, I set my sights on putting this to the test. Could I save London while resisting the temptation to feed? During my time with Vampyr, a more important question emerged. One that strikes at the heart of the matter. The killing blow, as it were. “Does it really matter when everybody in this town sucks?”

A bundle of great ideas and characters, shackled by some abysmal mechanics.
  2. Jun 4, 2018
Dontnod takes a thrillingly Gothic perspective on early 19th century London, but squanders it in a dreary and indecisive adventure.
  3. Jun 4, 2018
The idea of being a vampire stalking the streets of early 20th century London seemed like such a cool idea, but the game's poor execution on almost all fronts is egregious. Vampyr has almost no good qualities, and any that you can squeeze out of it are far outweighed by the negative qualities.
  4. Jun 6, 2018
I’ve played Vampyr on and off for a solid week and so far I’m enjoying myself immensely. Trouble is, I just can’t bring myself to murder anyone.
  5. Jun 4, 2018
It is astonishing that Vampyr is a new, full-priced video game being released in the year of our lord 2018, and not some obscure PlayStation 3 title that developed a cult following and sells for slightly more than you’d think on Amazon. I mean this—I promise—as a compliment.
  6. Jun 10, 2018
A bit of a janky game...A bit messy on a technical level...But I can't deny that I'm having a giggle with it. Sincere, heartfelt fun.
  7. Jun 10, 2018
Vampyr is a messy game, with frustrating combat and systems like crafting that soon become a chore. But the characters and their stories make it worth pushing through.
  8. Jun 4, 2018
Vampyr is a remarkable game that gives me genuine hope for the future of single-player RPGs. What it lacks in polish, it makes up for in ambition.
  9. Jul 3, 2018
The new game from the developers of ‘Life Is Strange’ writes checks for ambitions it can’t cash, but it’s worth the ride.

    It doesn’t suck
Vampyr is a 3rd person action adventure rpg where you play as Dr Johnathan Reid.
    Youre dead. Well. Youre undead.
Youre a vampire. Things happen that set you out to get answers and to save early 1900s London which is where this game is set…
    During the 1918 spanish flu…
The game takes place in an open world with vampyr hunters crawling the streets, youre given tasks and markers on the map, and you spend the games 13 hour long campaign going from place to place, at first gathering materials for the hospital that takes you in.. in between all of these areas are of course enemies wanting you dead.. lucky for you youre a vampire… you have a skill tree that you dump your experience into that’s earned off of these enemies and that you get from completing quests and sidequests…
and at the end of these missions theres usually a giant boss to take down, test out your skills, switching between one handed and two handed weapons, stunning enemies so you can bite them and drain their blood which allows you use the moves you’ve unlocked in your skill tree that not onlky need blood but run on a cool down as well.. and then the rest of the game youre investigating and gathering information..
I guess you could say.. youre londons batman…
this is when the game really starts to come to life.. you gather hints from characters that will unlock new dialog options of other charcters and you can go back and forther gathering info on the location of a person youre searching for…. But more importantly this is where the whole you being a vampire thing comes into play…
you can play this game as a good vampire, controlling your thirst for blood.. or you caun be like me.. a naughty vampire.. sucking all that blood. If you see someone out there looking like a snack.. they can be..
you can mesmerize characters, bring them into the shadows and drain them of their delicious blood, granting you a massive xp reward.. youre rewarded for being bad in that you can afford more skills, you become a more powerful vampire, thus the game is easier for you…
but by doing so chaos will break loose in the territories t hat you take too much life from.. and this is where I had the most fun.. in the role playing of a vampire.. of getting my victims to invite me inside and little do they know im just a little thirsty…
But now comes the tough love,
Vampyr is essentially a mid life cycle ps3 game.
There are so many mistakes made in this open world that just make this game painful.
for starters there is no fast travel.
there are hideouts spread all of this map where you can rest to spend your xp, refill your ammo, upgrade the weapons you find in the world.. but you cant travel to a single one of them…
and its not like the game slowly moves you along the map, no.. these missions will have you running back and forth across this world constantly…
this is made worse by the annoying decision to lock every single gate in the game.. you can just run from territory to territory, because theyre going to put a gat in the middle of the street that if you didn’t unlock from the otherside 7 hour ago, youre gonna have to run all the way around the map again.. dealing with other locked gates and paths…
but a las it gets worse…
its not as simple as running from one place to another there are enemies all over the place and you cant interact with unlocked gate while enemies are around.. forcing you to have to engage in combat before moving forward..
    but it somehow gets worse…
the combat here is sluggish slow and unfun, special attacks use way too much blood for how little damage they do, and to get more blood you have to do enough stun damage for an enemy to be vulnerable to be bitten… fights just drag on forever.. im a vampire.. I want to feel like some untouchable god when im dealing with these hunters and vampire rejects in the streets…
the only time the combat is fun is during boss battles.. boss battles are addictive and challenging.. forcing me to strategize.. its like the combat was made only with boss battles in mind and the street enemies weren’t balanced… fighting them isn’t fun.. theyre a nussiance.. it’s a chore
    BUT. IT. GETS. WORSE.
youre not even rewarded for dealing with these garbage encounters
These annoying enemies crawling all over the place only gain you 5 to 15 xp each.
Higher level upgrades cost about 2000 xp each.
That means you have to kill 130 to 400 for one single upgrade….
I don’t know how this ridiculous unbalanced in risk reward was overlooked but it was..
These enemies are far too much of a threat for you to need to kill 400 of them for an upgrade.
    Get out of here.
That being said vampyr is still a good game.. I enjoyed the game, its currently one of my top 20 games of 2018 so far.
Im just baffiled at the ps3 era mistakes made in a 2018 game
thankfully The story, the world, and the roleplaying save this game..
