Vampyr is a 3rd person action adventure rpg where you play as Dr Johnathan Reid.
    Youre dead. Well. Youre undead.
Youre a vampire. Things happen that set you out to get answers and to save early 1900s London which is where this game is set…
    During the 1918 spanish flu…
The game takes place in an open world with vampyr hunters crawling the streets, youre given tasks and markers on the map, and you spend the games 13 hour long campaign going from place to place, at first gathering materials for the hospital that takes you in.. in between all of these areas are of course enemies wanting you dead.. lucky for you youre a vampire… you have a skill tree that you dump your experience into that’s earned off of these enemies and that you get from completing quests and sidequests…
and at the end of these missions theres usually a giant boss to take down, test out your skills, switching between one handed and two handed weapons, stunning enemies so you can bite them and drain their blood which allows you use the moves you’ve unlocked in your skill tree that not onlky need blood but run on a cool down as well.. and then the rest of the game youre investigating and gathering information..
I guess you could say.. youre londons batman…
this is when the game really starts to come to life.. you gather hints from characters that will unlock new dialog options of other charcters and you can go back and forther gathering info on the location of a person youre searching for…. But more importantly this is where the whole you being a vampire thing comes into play…
you can play this game as a good vampire, controlling your thirst for blood.. or you caun be like me.. a naughty vampire.. sucking all that blood. If you see someone out there looking like a snack.. they can be..
you can mesmerize characters, bring them into the shadows and drain them of their delicious blood, granting you a massive xp reward.. youre rewarded for being bad in that you can afford more skills, you become a more powerful vampire, thus the game is easier for you…
but by doing so chaos will break loose in the territories t hat you take too much life from.. and this is where I had the most fun.. in the role playing of a vampire.. of getting my victims to invite me inside and little do they know im just a little thirsty…
But now comes the tough love,
Vampyr is essentially a mid life cycle ps3 game.
There are so many mistakes made in this open world that just make this game painful.
for starters there is no fast travel.
there are hideouts spread all of this map where you can rest to spend your xp, refill your ammo, upgrade the weapons you find in the world.. but you cant travel to a single one of them…
and its not like the game slowly moves you along the map, no.. these missions will have you running back and forth across this world constantly…
this is made worse by the annoying decision to lock every single gate in the game.. you can just run from territory to territory, because theyre going to put a gat in the middle of the street that if you didn’t unlock from the otherside 7 hour ago, youre gonna have to run all the way around the map again.. dealing with other locked gates and paths…
but a las it gets worse…
its not as simple as running from one place to another there are enemies all over the place and you cant interact with unlocked gate while enemies are around.. forcing you to have to engage in combat before moving forward..
    but it somehow gets worse…
the combat here is sluggish slow and unfun, special attacks use way too much blood for how little damage they do, and to get more blood you have to do enough stun damage for an enemy to be vulnerable to be bitten… fights just drag on forever.. im a vampire.. I want to feel like some untouchable god when im dealing with these hunters and vampire rejects in the streets…
the only time the combat is fun is during boss battles.. boss battles are addictive and challenging.. forcing me to strategize.. its like the combat was made only with boss battles in mind and the street enemies weren’t balanced… fighting them isn’t fun.. theyre a nussiance.. it’s a chore
    BUT. IT. GETS. WORSE.
youre not even rewarded for dealing with these garbage encounters
These annoying enemies crawling all over the place only gain you 5 to 15 xp each.
Higher level upgrades cost about 2000 xp each.
That means you have to kill 130 to 400 for one single upgrade….
I don’t know how this ridiculous unbalanced in risk reward was overlooked but it was..
These enemies are far too much of a threat for you to need to kill 400 of them for an upgrade.
    Get out of here.
That being said vampyr is still a good game.. I enjoyed the game, its currently one of my top 20 games of 2018 so far.
Im just baffiled at the ps3 era mistakes made in a 2018 game
thankfully The story, the world, and the roleplaying save this game..

This is one of these games that made me being torn between given it a 4/10 or 8/10. Because of that I chose 6/10 and will further explain why I think this game had so much more potential then it delivered due to some poor decisions and optimizations made by the developers.

First of all I ve been playing this game on my PS4 Pro SSD and I cant say that this game is well optimized. A lot of the graphics dont look detailed or crisp but still the game has frame drop issues. I also had mutliple freezes which made me nearly softlock because it happened on the same passages over and over so I had to take detours to prevent this. Also I had to re-do some boss fights which was highly annoying. Besides that I had bluescreen crashes in different chapters, gladly only a few in comparison to the freezes. The game has popup issues even on Pro SSD and also this game has so poorly loading optimizations that sometimes it needs even time to buffer when you want to talk to someone. In my personal opinion this is completely unacceptable and deserves 0 points.

On the other hand the narrative, the story and the atmosphere created by the developers is very well made and deserves at least some praise. London looks vicious and deadly. Wandering through bloody halls and gloomy streets made an excellent basis on what the story plot tried to deliver. The devs put good efforts bringing storylines into each of the characters. The neighbourhood system is interesting but flawed. Even if you kill a side character it can happen that the whole borough gets wiped. If you kill a pillar in a bad borough situation at whole it can also wipe multiple boroughs. It is interesting because your decision do have consequences but it is bad design that this is not really clear to the player. You can manually save, so if you did something wrong by not knowing you have to re-play the game.

The leveling system is not bad. I felt to not use a lot of the skills and concentrated on a few. The game has interesting balancing options. You level the most by killing but in a pacifist run you are not allowed to, but the weapon dmg remains static whereas the enemies scale making it a viable balance. You can find, buy and craft things but the variety is limited.

It is really hard to summarize my feeling on this game. I would ve rated it 8/10 probaby if not for the various crashes, freezes and performance problems. Switching between 1080, 4k, supersampling etc. did not help me. To be fair these issues are random and do not happen to all of the players it is still unforgiveable to me because it ruins the gaming experience a lot. I still had fun with Vampyr. I might even be willing to suggest buying it but only at a large discount.

The best that could be said about Vampyr is that it's an ambitious AA game that manages to accomplish quite a bit considering its tiny budget. Unfortunately its biggest accomplishment is its existence, being a complete game with quite a bit of content, but when you look at it as an actual experience it falls apart very quickly.

Let me start off by saying that I couldn't care less about the generic plot, I truly wanted to get into it seeing as 60% of the game is an obscene amount of dialogue and exposition (an insane amount of side missions). However around 3 hours into the game I stopped trying and just started skipping the poorly acted dialogues, saving myself what I can only guess to be around 4 hours of boredom. The plot is paper thin and the character development never amounts to anything of substance.

The gameplay and world don't hold up much better. London is tiny but getting around it is tedious. Because of the endless dead-ends and locked doors you spend hours just trying to figure out how the hell you can get from point A to point B - the hordes of respawning enemies are also frustrating since you never feel like you are progressing - they always spawn in the same places and in the same numbers slowing you down in the cheapest way possible. The combat feels like it's pulled from an early PS2 game, hit detection is terrible, locking on is a 50/50 bet and due to the adaptive difficulty, all of the enemies level up along with you so you never feel as though you've gotten more powerful.

The game's worst element is it's adaptive difficulty which is based on the way you play. A pacifist playthrough results in endless grind, absurdly long battles and an overall feeling that you are always the weakest around. If you go wild and start killing everybody (which is what I did at one point when everyone was 10lvls above me and combat became nearly impossible) you will quickly start overpowering most enemies turning the combat into an annoying chore untill you reach the end where you will experience a truly absurd difficulty spike during the final boss battle (good luck fighting someone 15lvls above you).

One final thing I want to mention is how badly optimized this game is. During my 30 hours with it I experienced over 20 hard crashes, endless loading screens which drag on far too long and hundreds of freezes which left me guessing whether my game had crashed or was just stuck, loading some textures.

Overall, if you have 50-ish hours which you are ready to sink into a very mediocre AA game that feels extremely last gen, maybe Vampyr will be perfect for you and you'll be able to play through everything it has to offer. For everyone else tho, skip this one, it's yet another bad PS+ free game Sony got from the bargain bin.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Vampyr has an original concept of level up system. You either complete side quests or suck people's blood for xp. It's a decision between morality and faster xp gaining. The xp value of one's blood can be increased by finding clues about them and by doing the mission they give you. Although some of the personal stories are interesting, the only outcome of a character's development (there are 66 characters) is death by bloodsuck or death pending. There aren't really any other resolutions but the two mentioned earlier. The side characters are simply xp storages waiting to be claimed.

Combat is clunky at first but can be mastered quickly and be then enjoyable and fair. However, most of the gameplay is hours of mostly boring dialogues presented with monotonous voice and little to none facial animations which are seen through fixated camera view. And no, you can't hammer x because it would skip all the lines of speaker A until speaker B says something and not just one line of subtitles.

The game is 4 years old and optimization is abominable. The game regularly hardlocks and crashes.

Between the two main characters, there is a romance which is so forced and therefore cringe. It goes from no indication at all (not even in optional dialogues) to "you're the only a woman I've ever loved" after one 20-minute long dialogue session. And then the romance revolves around the story until the end of it. I can't recall anything so fast-forward like this. Maybe "romances" in Mafia (2002) or Metro Last Light but those are rather for a sex scene and are more irrelevant to the story. Not such great effusions.

On the top of that, the game is brimming with woke schütt. People using "independent woman" unironically, screaming feminist/marxist slogans at night. The game sometimes lets you pick one of three answers on a question but when you catch some gays doing gay things, the only thing you can say is "I support gays" or "I support gays very much" or "damn bigots!" Same with religion related questions, you can just hate Christianity but you can choose how much (not to mention every Christian is depicted as a molester or a complete lunatic).
There were like just over a hundred Africans in London in the early 20th century, yet you meet 4 of them and all of them whine about oppression. Historically accurate.

But this game is story driven, not just standard hack&slash or action RPG.
And Atmosphere is the most beautiful part of the game. It is really create a feeling like you are in the game:
Details. It is beautifully created world with lots of details. For eg. just look in the windows and you could see the room with furniture and other staff inside. There are some flaws like - 3 same paintings in the mansion (sure people have a money to purchase different painting). But the rest is so beautifully recreate the gloomy atmosphere
Music. It is support the dark atmosphere and perfectly match other details
Gameplay. Surprisingly it is very enjoyable. Something between Dark Souls and Witcher. Each time you are develop your character, the battle become more interesting.
Characters. The crucial part of the game. They are very well developed and implemented with own personalities. And you could kill everyone :) but look, they are so awesome, that my first playthrough i tried to keep everyone alive, but the story and you actions could lead to unexpected course of events. And the world is adapt, if you kill someone, next night his wife could already be with another man and related persons are saying about his death. And this is so influent. Wasteland 3? maybe it has more variety of the choices, but for me they are more straightforward.

    Cons:
Sure this game wasn't develop by big Company, and not so polished as RDR2, the movements and some texture is not so superb, but creators made a fantastic game with resources they have.

I score 10/10 because i would like the team to continue what they are doing, it is really outstanding games with the soul compare to EA and Ubisoft games focused on your money not the game itself.

The game takes place in 1918 London, with eerie atmosphere and old buildings all around you. I must say that they have captured World War 1 London quite good. It gives off a proper Vampiric vibe and it instantly got me comfortable in their world.

Social Network: First thing to note, you'll be doing a LOT of talking. It requires you to find out everything you can about the people in it and their social network. You can tell with your Vampiric Vision if a person's blood is clean or not and you can also create serums in order to heal them, so that they'll provide more exp if you decide to kill them. If you leave the people that are sick, the district's health level will get lower and lower until there is an epidemic and most of that district's citizens are wiped out. If you do decide to kill a person, you can "mesmerise" him to take him somewhere out of sight and depending on the person, they'll provide a massive XP boost in order for you to get more skills and enhance your abilities.

Lore: The Lore is really enjoyable and informative. I love it when a game goes deep into the lore as it makes it feel more real. The vampiric abilities do not only explain what they do, but what actually happens as well, for example it states that Vampires can use their incredibly fast reactions and speed which makes it SEEM like they disappear into a puff of smoke and pop up elsewhere, not actually teleport.

Story: I haven't gotten that far in the game so I can't really tell, and I don't want to say something that may be a spoiler either, however it got me hooked from the get go as soon as it started. It's mysterious and slow paced, so you'll be finding out things at a slow pace. You are a Doctor, a blood transfusion specialist to be exact (how ironic). As a brilliant doctor, you are respected and admired even though some Doctors do not approve of your methods. You are not above using your influence and authority as a Doctor to get what you want. As a vampire, you'll have to be invited into people's homes before you can enter, and you can also break a person's psyche in order to make them tell you the truth.

Combat: Oh damn, this is lackluster. The combat doesn't make you feel powerful at all as the skills the hits don't really have that impact to them when they hit. The movement of characters is clunky and feels like i'm playing a generic low budget PS3 game. I was not expecting much from the combat as from what I had seen it had already looked a bit bland, but nevertheless I always like to try things out for myself. This is probably my biggest gripe with the game, as the vampiric skills they have are really awesome, but lack that OOMPH when you're actually using them.

Overall I'd say i'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 and recommend it to anyone who likes Vampires and eerie surroundings and atmosphere.

A good enough RPG that does just the bare minimum to keep you chugging along until the next big release. Vampyr does nothing fantastic but it doesn't do anything horribly wrong. Vampyr's ultimate weak point, imo is the combat. Seeing gameplay previews before release, the combat looked relatively precise and deliberate. After playing though I found it not so precise and not at all deliberate. I felt like someone with a severe lack of depth perception. Being mostly melee, most of the combat is close up and personal, but whenever Jonathan (the protagonist) seems close enough to attack he actually isn't at all which leads to a lot of misses. The same can be said for enemies though. It seems the NPCs have the same lack of depth perception than you. When I found myself making mistakes that left me wide open for an attack the enemy would get within striking distance and miss completely. The good news is it makes the game easier. The bad news is it makes the game easier. Imo, this is what turns what could be great combat into very sloppy combat. When enemies miss more than half the time it makes combat feel more tedious and boring. Don't get me wrong, I kinda make that sound worse than it is because its not awful by any stretch, it's just not great. That is probably what I found to be the worst part of the game. Everything else though, the feeding mechanic, looting and dialogue are all good enough to pick up the lack of exciting combat pretty well. I would go more in depth with the feeding mechanic but I don't think I can articulate without giving too much away. All in all I did enjoy my time with Vampyr but if I were speaking to a friend I would suggest waiting for a used copy or a price drop. Expand

I just beat the game, not about to spoil anything but.... it's a game that often goes between good and great. Combat needed more polish, but it's still fun and makes you feel like a vampire. Though I think it's a bit of a letdown that there is no new game plus, not even a free roam after you beat the game, which makes matters worse when the game has no manual save options.

Though I think it's a bit of a letdown that there is no new game plus, not even a free roam after you beat the game, which makes matters worse when the game has no manual save options.
Also you can only get a good ending if you don't kill ANY citizens. And you get the most depressive ending when killing just a few.
Every other ending beside the pacifist one are terrible. Even if you decide to kill just 1 guy who had it coming. I was afraid the developers would do something like this. It's very disappointing.

it's clear that this game focuses more on story and dialogue choices than gameplay. But i really wish they had had focused more on the animations, they look very outdated. Don't get me wrong it's still a fun game, but you can unlock several skills but can't use all of them during combat without going into customizations menu, as there are only the 4 shoulder buttons to assign them on.
And even if you could use them all at once, there is no incentive, as to unlock most of them you'd have to kill a lot of people, knowing that you are going to get one of the bad endings.

Still it was not a bad game. This game had the potential to become the best open world vampire rpg game out there.

I hope when and if a sequel comes out, the developers will do better with the story, but especially with the gameplay and animations. The game shines in its enviromental details and lighting, and each NPC feel important, some obviously more than others.
I think that most people who are giving this game a poor rating, doesn't seem to realise that no other vampire game has ever done anything like Vampyr: Where you feel like a vampire, you evolve as one according to your choices, and you blend in in an open world.... but the odd choice was to have your eyes look more demonic once you feed on a civilian, and yet somehow no one treats you any differently because of it. Another odd thing is that feeding on civliians gives you a chunk of exp, while if you feed on vampire hunters, even if not fully, gives you little to no exp. There should have been an option to sneak up on drain them fully like you would a civilian. But instead unless your bite attacks are fully upgraded, you will only take a small sip and do a little damage.
One thing is certain: if the developers create a sequel, using this first game as its foundation and improving on everything, it could possibly become one of the best RPG games out there, on par with the Witcher 3. But as it stands now. It needs more work. But considering how even the very first witcher game started out compared to this. I believe Vampyr has a shining future, as long as the developers can remain passionate about this game.

The more abilities you get the more fun the combat gets. It reminds me alot of bloodborne and the vampiric abilities are awesome and fun as hell to use. The rpg systems and choice based gameplay result in a great experience. You have to live with your choices and accept any consequences that may arise. The lore in the game is very detailed and interesting. Overall i just really enjoyed it and glad i gave it a second chance. It's definitely a hidden gem and my fav vampire game. Vampyr’s intriguing story and innovative gameplay mechanics make it a worthy purchase. It’s a shame the game has an abundance of frame rate drops and glitches ,but the setting and overall gameplay mechanics do make up for it. It also has a decent levelling system and some remarkable vampiric abilities at disposal. Overall it’s an excellent vampire game and a great RPG.

Very innovative and unique little game. Must play for people who liked Vampire the Masquerade, whether pen and paper RPG, or Bloodlines video game. The combat is merely serviceable, but the story, character interactions, writing, atmosphere and music are top notch.
Sleeper cult hit, despite twitch-shooter kids bashing it (possibly because they can't read, can't play or both).

The part of gameplay that truly makes this game distinct is the "civilian system" every npc has their own routines, homes, personalities, blood quality, etc and their well being will effect your playthrough. Gameplay wise that is what shines here! It is brilliant and fresh!

In conclusion; if you want a rich story with a strong protagonist, original gameplay mechanics (the civilian system) and a world drenched in atmosphere. This is it.

Now let me tell you that Vampyr is totally worth it for 45-50€, which is the price for an AA (like Kingdom Come: Deliverance for example). This is another masterpiece made by Dontnod. Intriguing story with choices and consequences, wonderful level design and awesome soulslike combat. Vampyr delivers a really atmospheric world, albeit with a fairly predictable mission of discovering the cause of your vampirism and what it means. London is rendered in a fantastic macabre way and the ravages of the Spanish Flu have left it sparse, making interactions with individuals feel fairly weighty and meaningful. The real issue undermining the world itself is the incredible amount of locked doors and the lack of intuition. Although I'm not expecting BoTW levels of freedom, if I can teleport 20 feet in the air I expect to be able to climb over a crate half my height.

Where the game really shines is in the conversations, which are interesting and it's fun to explore the depths of each character. They can be a touch immersion breaking when you don't follow the most natural order - for example, after a character reacts to you in fear, you can ask some generic questions about the location and their job, exploring all the dialogue fully before saying 'don't be afraid'.

The only other thing I'd mention, and this is more for the developers than anyone else, is that it's really not great if you don't have perfect eyesight, or in my case, if you play on a 30" TV. While there is an option to make the subtitles as big as 'medium' (why no large I have no idea), the flavour text in notes is near illegible, while the names of ingredients in recipes is so small I have to either walk up to my tv or google it on my phone. A minor complaint maybe, but a bit of a microcosm for how the game has good ideas but fails to follow.

7/10 wouldn't play again but enjoyed completing it.

Vampyr's greatest strength is in not overstaying its welcome in any respect. So for example, though the combat (probably the game's weakest feature) gets repetitive, you never spend long stretches in combat. Likewise, even though Vampyr contains a lot of dialogue, you can take it pretty easy and learn about the characters at your leisure. Nothing in the game is particularly original or deep, but it's all done well enough that the little spoonfuls you get make for a great adventure.

    I've heard complaints that it's a full-priced game, but I didn't feel like I wasted a cent. If you find it on sale, it's a must-buy

The Gas lamp lit streets of London are interesting to explore and offer plenty of collectibles and vampires to battle. The other side of the game is the investigation/interrogation side of the game. Anyone familiar with the last few Sherlock Holmes games will recognize the rich and well written dialogue sections with NPCs you'll come to know. Many games claim that "your choices matter" but with Vampyr it very much true in that you will need to balance your surgeon vocation in helping the wounded and sick as well as your vampiric desires in determining who and when you should feed. On the surface it may seem like an over ambitious game, but it's rather humble in it's execution and as I stated before, it all comes together quite nicely. As some of the other rational user reviews have stated; This is NOT a AAA game, it's a AA game, so don't go into thinking it'll have the polish of a mainstream AAA title. If you liked DONTNOD's previous games Remember Me and Life is Strange than you'll have a good idea what kind of passion project this is. If you like the Sherlock Holmes games and don't mind a little action thrown in than you'll be pleasently surprised. I'd give the game an 8/10, but most of the negative user reviews are clearly trolls, for whatever reason, so I'm going to give it a 10 on here. Expand

I don't know if it runs better on a more powerful PC, but the loading screens are hideously long and if you sprint across the map a loading message pops up because it couldn't load the textures of the next area fast enough. Aside from that, several things keep this from being a legendary game. If every idea and mechanic just had one additional layer of complexity it would have been amazing. Combat would have benefit from a greater variety of weapons and upgrades as well as skill upgrades. The ability to influence a civilian is the most obvious thing lacking. You learn all about their problems but you cannot convince them to do anything about it. If they hate london, you can't convince them to leave. If they're a hopeless drunk, you can't inspire them to get their life together. All you can do is either eat them, or not eat them. Similarly, they are missing from any sort of epilogue. The ability to sire one or a couple of citizens would have been badass, even if they could just do simple things, like go out and gather you ingredients or they could be given medicine to heal the sick people in a district. In any case, Vampyr is a pretty fun ride with some unique ideas, I would totally recommend it. Expand

I won't bore you with all the mundane details that my surrounding colleagues have laid out for you. I will assume by the time you read this little blurb that you already know the premise of the game.
    set in 1918 -
    Jonathan Reid --
    Vampire / Doctor --

    Got it... good. Let's continue.

I will simply explain what happened to me.
I bought the game with high expectations of a good bit of entertainment coming my way.
I started to play, and found my self perplexed and puzzled. The main character has just realized he cannot die and is trying to wrap his head around what he possibly is, but somehow, without any instruction, explanation, or assistance he is able to evolve his vampiric abilities. As I went a little further in the game to the first of many stiff and horrible combat situations, I found that this was not the game for me.
So like some other colleagues, I tried to take the game back. i soon found that gamestop's return policy was lacking, and sorely I was stuck with a game that did not have the polish i needed in most of the games I have played. This is not something I would have wanted to pay full price for.

So now I am stuck with a game that no longer want. Someone has to pay!

I made up in my mind that would play the game, but I would give 'no quarter' to any and all NPC's in my path. I was on a mission to kill and suck dry all humans and vampires alike, and I held true to that statement.

But something started to happen. I found that I was actually being drawn into the story and wanted to see how it unfolded. However, the game play was the factor that kept taking me out of the immersion I sought.

Here were some of the issues:
    -Bad targeting.

    -Stiff; repetitive combat.

    -Collision detection issues.

-Repetitive NPC use (gets pretty bad when you have chaos level districts ) - Same Monster in 1 new skin, and possibly a slightly higher level, but no real difference in the end.

-Poor Game mechanics - FINGER POINTING -The game seemed to continually remind you when you did something bad, like kill a human character, and it got pretty annoying to see the message every time you made the choice to suck someone dry, But there was NEVER a message to specify letting them live, or helping them out would better help the surrounding area. They give you a choice, but point the finger at you telling you that you have done something bad (and that there would be consequences for what you did), without saying your a bad guy!

-Poor Item crafting mechanics - Make 3rd to 4th level weapons and never worry - The powers and RPG elements are pretty cut and dry. Since I went on a killing spree, I eventually made it to level 48, and I was pretty powerful with a limited set of powers selected. The item customization was pretty broken. Like the old game RAGE..level up that one weapon (Shotgun w/ explosive rounds in Rage, or the CLUB in Vampyr) and you pretty much WRECK the enemies for the rest of the game. I did not have to rely on my powers, and enemy levels were not a factor as I was pretty OP.

This, in turn, took away from the story. I was breezing through situations, not giving a care in the world to my very existence. I was the master and didn't care. When you find a loop hole like this in games you tend to not fear death, and thus further disconnect yourself from the true purpose of the game.

Story wise, I was hooked. The characters in game are nice and complex. They have depth, and that is what the developers hoped you would see and feel. Thus, it would have made it hard for you to suck them dry. I, on the other hand, harbored ill will at both the game, and gamestop, so it was easy to kill every last one of them, though you will need a little strategy to do that task as you could put yourself in a bind if you kill a whole district too fast and you do not have the correct level weapons or powers.

The ending was confusing, the last boss, was easy to read, and sadly a few more levels than myself, but I had no idea why they were the end boss, and there was no real mention of them until literally at the very end in a cryptic conversation with your maker.
    WHO?
    WHAT?
    HOW?
These questions come out, but are not answered. It seemed severely rushed and left me scratching my head.
So we just add a random new boss at the very end with no context? Fine.....

The epilogue was a kind change. This really intrigued me as I was not ready for a detailed ending such as that.

I am happy for the story, and sad at the effort it took for me to learn of it. I would have had a better time watching the whole thing play out on someone Youtube channel and saved my $60.00.

The game is a bargin if you get it used after waiting a month... trust me, that would be the adequate price for it. I have completed my mission and I encourage all to try and kill all the people, you will find some cool twist and turns.

First of all it's a combat system. It is no interesting or entertaining in any aspect. And there's much stuff in game that revolves around it. The whole character level up system is made for combat. The beautiful world is inhabited in such manner, that you have to fight ton of monsters every time you travel from one NPC domain to another. It would've been ok if it helped level up, but no! Most of experience you get for completing quests or sucking blood from NPC. Fast travel would've helped, but hey, guess what? No fast travel, well it wouldn't be needed if you could reach NPC locations without having to kill respawning monsters. Oh yeah, and the level up too as you progress. Look at Deus Ex, there's no need to traverse hostile environments to reach certain NPC. The mechanic of characters becoming ill is awesome (although a little repetitive closer to the end of the game), you have to keep them healthy. But every time you have to run through enemy lines. So annoying.
The other sad thing but no so annoying thing are a lot of empty environment. Sometimes you go into room, or place where you find just few cons, even though place is decorated like there could be something important.
The game just feels like very cheap indi of 10 years ago, except for the graphics. Animations, controls, combat. It's just not an AAA game at all.

I first got interested in this game when I heard this was a vampire RPG. Sure, the graphics didn't look that great from trailers and all that considering how it is a Double A Game, but Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines is one of my favourite RPGs and its graphics aren't exactly great either.

Anyway, you start the game being dragged by a pit filled with bodies while a bunch of grave robbers relieve you of your possessions. This is after hearing a creepy nursery-rhyme from a mysterious voice. As you flee from them, the world is tinged in grey but in the distance you see a human walking around. Or, to be more specific, you see their red blood-filled veins and pumping heart. Acting on instinct Johnathan Reid, our hero, sinks his fangs into the neck of this person and sucks them dry...only too realize too late that it was his sister.

After this, he gets chased through the streets of London and searches for a place to hide. Especially because the sun is coming up and he feels it burn him. Eventually, he does find a suitable location where he finds a gun, takes it and places it against his chest as he lies down on the bed. But even as he pulls the trigger, he still awakens the next morning.

As you probably could have guessed, even before actually starting the game, Johnathan is now a Vampire.

What follows is an interesting tale of Johnathan learning more about his condition, and others like him, as well as trying to figure out WHO exactly made him this way. Not only that, but there is an epidemic raging through London as well. The Spanish Flu. Only, it isn't like any flu anyone's heard of before.

Personally, I thought Vampyr had a strong and interesting main storyline and their spin on Vampire lore was a lot of fun as well. Another strong point, which I hope more games will use from now on, was learning more about the NPCs. In Vampyr, you need to learn certain hints about NPCs as it strengthens their blood and thus give you more EXP when you finally decide to suck them dry. You can learn these hints through conversing with them, conversing with other NPCS, eavesdropping on them during certain events or by reading journals or letters. Barring the last options, I don't think I've seen a lot of games handling acquiring information this way. In a lot of cases you just find written or recorded journals were you'll get an info dump about the world or a character, or you have to build up a characters trust or whatever by speaking to them multiple times or selecting the correct dialogue option. (That is still a thing, by the way. You can lose a Hint by not picking the correct one.)

But as much as I might have liked Vampyr's main story, their lore, the way you aquire information and even the atmosphere in London. It is not a perfect game, even if you keep in mind that it is a Double A Game.

On PS4 loading screens would pop up randomly as you move through the city, which could be quite immersion breaking. Fighting is...kind of dull. Some of the boss fights were cool, but fighting the same mobs over and over as you walk through the city gets boring FAST. Not only that, but I think I went with the same strategy for most of the game. Use a combination of blood powers and melee attacks, stun with stake to suck blood. Rinse and repeat. There is also no fast travel, which is a minor annoyance because you CAN unlock gates and stuff for shortcuts. But like I said, you have to go through a fight in nearly every street. Although intentional, the fact that you can only use one save slot which saves automatically can be pretty annoying if you just want to save and check all the options you get during certain parts of the game. Though I guess it will encourage multiple playthroughs. Finally, although there are loads of important NPCS that all look unique. When it comes to their models and voice acting, you can tell that the most effort has been put in the main characters, the villains and the pillars.

My final verdict for the game would be a 7/7.5. Definitely a game to check out sometime. But it would probably be best to wait for a sale.

Vampyr you play Dr. Jonathan Reid a recently turned Vampyr who is trying to find his maker.
The story may sound simple, and it is, but for this game I didn't need something super gothic or Shakespearean. The games story lets you follow the type of characters you'd expect to see. They have a man of science trying to cure vampirism, the femme fatale who your character falls in love with even though they barely even speak, and the old vampire club that have been around for centuries that pull the cities strings. The game story has you make choices on certain characters that for the most part don't seem to matter. I was so evil in this game, but everytime he is in a cutscene Jon acts like I didn't just kill 7 innocent people. He acts all righteous and then I murder the hell out of whoever I am talking to. Unfortunately the games ending is a bit lack luster, and I had me thinking that's it?
The gameplay is rather interesting. Unlike other choiced based games that punish you for going evil Vampyr will reward your dickhole ways. The game gets easier the more innocents you murder. Me personally I loved the way you can seduce your prey into following you then having a late night snack. The game plays very similar to the Witcher series with how combat is concerned. Special abilities are on a cooldown, and require blood. You can stun foes with certain attack. It has a minimal crafting and upgrade system that will reward your combat skills and make the game easier. The enemies vary enough so you don't get tired of hitting the same four types over and over. The boss fights are very much patterned based with how you must time and dodge their attacks and wait for the right moment to get your licks in. The game will be easier if you kill people because you can level up more which means you can brute force your way through the fights. So if you want a hard game be the nicest vampire you can be and resist the temptation. What did annoy me is the setting. While Victorian England is nice it is so easy to get turned around when everything looks the same. Soooooo many doors where locked from the otherside it got annoying after awhile.
Overall I liked the game and see myself going back to it a while from now to do more side quest, and maybe get the stories ending a bit better. I liked the kills and combat, but thought the character should fit the choices a bit more especially if you go full on villain. The game isn't perfect but well worth owning at a discount. I definitely think one should BARGAIN BIN this game.

The "story" is as uninspired as the design. The voice acting is mediocre at best and the multiple choice dialog system was all the rage 10 years ago. "You are bitten by a Super Vampire, you "accidentally" kill your sister, you are hunted, you need to find whoever made you into a vampire." What a dreadful boring story.

Of cause they had to throw in a skill system and crafting system that is as uninspired and boring as the rest of the game. They should have spent more time on combat animations sound and design in general.

Stay away from this unless its in a bargain bin and even then you will regret the purchase.

Sure there are some aspects that leave more to be desired - mainly the wonky combat system (if you just use the bonesaw and level it up through the whole game, you end up pretty solid). However, the idea of choice in this game adds that nostalgic feeling for me of "Vampire the Dragon Age Bloodlines".

Depending on your playthrough (or multiple as there are different endings based on your choices), you can easily spend 15-25 hours waltzing through the streets of London murdering or saving as you please.

This should have been called Vampyr: Woke at Midnight. The “wokeness” of this game is pure stupidity. Apparently, 1918 London was as woke as 2019. Dontnod? More like don’t buy. I know I won’t. Thank God I bought it used so my money didn’t support this propaganda masquerading as escapism. It’s incessant. One woke cringe after the next. 0/10

You end up just clicking through it to get it over with as fast as possible. Its too bad really. You end up really not caring about characters because their story about their "gay lover" and life was hard in trench warfare...... but man those bigots are worse. Or I just murdered this guy cause he was actually "racist" so its not that bad, or I was sexually abused by a priest... I liked the atmosphere und the beginning of the story but technically Vampyr is not finished. The combat system is a bad copy of the Souls-mechanic and doesn't feel very good. Furthermore I hate respawning enemies and the loading times. If you leave a building and reenter it, all the enemies are respawned. This is a no go! Graphics could be better but I liked the sound of the game.
In the end I wanted to like it but the game doesn't want to be liked. Perhaps I'll give it another try in a few years when it is in sale. In this unfinished state it isn't worth the price.

The combat is boring and repetitive. To make matters worse, the developers set this game in 1918. I don't know why developers these days are so obsessed with setting games during ancient times. That just give games a boring atmosphere and it limits what the player can do.

Also, there is no multiplayer. So once you beat the main story, there is no reason to touch this game again. $60 for a low budget game with no replay value is a cashgrab. I recommend you pick this game up when the price of this game drops to $5.

I would love to be able to experience the story and uncover more dialogue options but I am so over the combat that I just can't keep playing. The combat is clunky, repetitive and boring. The enemies dart around, moving like a vampire should be but your character feels like controlling a plank of wood.

You can get blood from rats but oh wait, no rats anywhere near the areas you roam. You could bite an enemy, oh wait, you can only do that if you sneak up on them and all the human enemies walk around in such a way that you can't actually sneak up on them (and even if you could, there is no flipping sneak button, you have to press the thumbstick super lightly). It is super easy to die at the hands of a single enemy that you took out with no trouble before... which brings me to the check point system. It sucks. With each fight being tedious and unimaginative it is a royal pain in the ass to take out each enemy and then if you f up, you have to do the whole section again with all 6 of the enemies you (painstakingly) killed respawning.

I don't know why this game chose to include such terrible combat when it has an interesting story to tell. It would have greatly benefited from a 'story' or easy mode for people who don't want to deal with the god awful combat system.

Also it is ridiculous how your character can't even climb over or hide behind objects and how he can supposedly teleport but there's no way to sneak around 3 human enemies blocking a bridge

I wanted to like this game so bad and I am just so disappointed. Never should have been a full price game

Oh yeah, longest loading times after dying than any ps4 game I can remember

I would have put an 8-9 but this game needs to compensate for the bad reviews it got. Its definitely worth buying. I played with a controller and the combat was very satisfying.

Pros: Combat: Dodging bullets, stunning enemies and then finishing them with skills. It was a fairly decent combat mechanic that never gets boring. But its not the combat that makes this game shine.

    Pros:
Combat: Dodging bullets, stunning enemies and then finishing them with skills. It was a fairly decent combat mechanic that never gets boring. But its not the combat that makes this game shine. Storytelling and level design are vastly superior to many games.

Story: The story was a decent 9. Minor flaw was the forced romance that doesn't suit a game with multiple choices and consequences. You play as Dr Reid and renowned surgeon in blood transfusions(see the irony) and upon acquiring his powers he goes on an investigation to understand what happened to him and what that means to the world. The way they present the lore on vampires and backstory for each character is amazing. But the main story can stand on its own. How your character progresses through his predicaments throughout the story and how he copes with it is entirely up to the player. I would say in a way, you kinda create your own story.

World: Its an amazing visual representation of London back in 1900. It really feels like the city is decaying due to the disease. Its very dark. And the game makes you feel safe in populated zones. But when you go outside the safe areas, it feels like all hell has broken loose. Dead people around the corner, abandoned and creepy houses. You never know when a Skal is going to creep out on you. It was really well designed. The world seems alive. And NPCs arent just there to move the story forward but to make you live/roleplay the game a little bit. You can feed of any NPC at a given time and the game motivates you to learn more about the character before doing so. Once you get to know their backstory you get to make the moral decision of feeding or not on them. And you have to live with the consequences of your actions and how your action may affect the relations between NPCs or the world.

Replayability: You get 4 different endings depending on your playstyle. Makes it worth at least playing twice to see how playing good vampires vs evil vampires plays out and differs from one another.

    Cons:
Romance: The romance was the biggest issue with the story. It felt hurried and forced on you. There are no signs that the characters like each other and then suddenly its just there. It was weirdly done. I wish they add some more voice dialogue between them or at least make it optional.

Sometimes the dialogue wheel would offer me three options which were essentially the same because the game was funnelling me in a certain direction. My second main issue was with the combat system and the difficulty. I didn't enjoy the combat very much especially in the later stages of the game when the difficulty starts to ramp up but I did like being overpowered. So I decided to devour everyone and roleplay as an evil vampire. It was going great until the final boss... who is more difficult the higher your level... so at my stage it's next to impossible for me to win. If the combat system was better I'd stick with it and beat the game but it's not enjoyable enough for that. Also i'm quite annoyed that the promised 'you decide the difficulty' line turns out to be highly misleading.
There are really fantastic things about this game. I loved the art style, the layout of the city, the npcs who have really excellent and well written dialogues. The initial sense of guilt for even considering drinking someone's blood. It was all going so well until I reached the later stages of the game and all of that promise came to naught. I really respect the developer's for taking a risk and introducing such an innovative gameplay idea in the form of drinking blood to level up while risking the safety of other inhabitants but these missteps left a real sour taste so it has to be a 7 from me.

Literally anyone can make this in Dreams, and it would actually play better. It's like they have ran out of money and improvised for half or more of the game. Movement and combat is horrible and worse than Mortal Shell and Lords of the Fallen. And it doesn't make up for it in dialogue or story either

Like most double-A productions you'll notice things like dated graphics and some technical issues that stem from having been made on a middling budget. However, developer DONTNOD Entertainment shows once again that they are one of the most creative names working in the industry today, and the unique ideas and compelling world they've crafted here make this title worth playing in spite of its faults.

Set in a plague-ridden London during the 1900s, this is a vampiric power fantasy mixed with a detective simulator (quests are even called "investigations") that lets you play doctor on the side. As you search for a cure for the epidemic that's sweeping the continent you'll be faced with a lot of morally gray decisions that will have serious impacts on the world around you. For example, a choice I made relatively early on in the story that seemed solid inadvertently led to an entire district descending into chaos, with a portion of its inhabitants either going missing, joining a gang, or turning into hideous monsters.

By far the most intriguing decisions you'll grapple with though are directly tied to the game's main hook. Every non-hostile NPC you come across can be fed on for a massive boost in experience points at the cost of their lives. While uncovering their secrets, healing them when they're sick, and completing side-quests for them offers a meager amount of EXP on its own, it also serves the purpose of enriching their blood and making it more profitable for you turn them into your next meal later on down the line. This mechanic creates an interesting dynamic where you can either help people out of the goodness of your own heart or raise them like cattle for the slaughter in order to get more powerful.

This is a significant feature because it essentially allows you to pick your own difficulty level. Choosing not to feed on people will ensure the world remains stable, but will make the overall game harder as enemies will always be at higher levels than you. Meanwhile, taking the alternative path and killing the locals for their blood will cause the city's status to deteriorate, but will allow you to unlock the most powerful abilities and can make combat a breeze. You can also strike a balance between the two options and only devour a portion of the population you deem unworthy of life.

In an impressive move DONTNOD put a lot of work into ensuring each character you encounter has a fully fleshed out backstory and set of motives. I met everyone from heartless serial killers to selfless hospital workers and plenty of types in-between. You can decide if the city would be better off without someone or not if you want to and that's a really cool feature. My one issue with it is that I never found talking to any of them to be all that interesting as your relationships with them never really go anywhere unless they are significant to the main story. So the only reason I ever bothered interacting with and learning about anyone was to get stronger, and even then I found myself skipping through most of the dialogue.

As far as issues go, this is far from the prettiest title on the market, but even the plastic looking character models can't rob this moody, gothic version of London of its personality and atmosphere. Load screens are long and you can even run into some random ones while exploring. I also experienced a few crashes. The biggest problems though are the lack of a fast travel system which leads to a lot of backtracking to and fro across the city and some trouble with the balancing at the very beginning and tail end of the game that are the result of enemies being too highly scaled above you. Part of this is intentional though to goad you into draining the NPCs of life as a means of somewhat simulating for you the protagonist's struggle with his constant thirst for blood. Which is creative, but frustrating nonetheless. There is a "story mode" where you won't have to worry about difficulty at all and can solely focus on the narrative, but playing that way locks you out of being able to get a certain trophy.

While known more today for their episodic, Telltale style adventure games, Vampyr like Remember Me before it makes a strong case for why DONTNOD should break out of their comfort zone more often. While they still weren't able to find the same level of critical acclaim here as they were with their Life is Strange series, they still created an exciting RPG based on original concepts that's worth looking at. Especially since its faults this time are more technical in nature rather than inherent to the actual design itself.

Awesome script, fantastic thick atmosphere, music is beautiful, loved all districts and inhabitants..Nice accents, dialogs. Really loved, so old school, and its a real hardcore game, unlike most of modern games. You need to think wisely, because consequences can be devastating..

However, the story and the atmosphere are super good, really, the eerie and creepy feeling all around the game, sometimes even scary, is amazing and perfectly built and you never get tired of investigating and knowing more about the NPCs because the stories are very well written.
You also have basic looting and crafting and a bunch of abilities you can unlock as a part of the character’s progression. Some are cool, some others are useless and completely forgettable, but all in all it is an average towards good progression system.
Kind of a mixed bag so far, right?
When this game really shines is in terms of choices and consequences, and atmosphere as I mentioned before. You are going to have some tough time making some of the decisions here (if you care about that stuff of course). There will be even times when your intentions are good, and some very nasty unexpected things happen after some of your choices (sometimes I found a bit of unfairness there). But that is really the soul of this game, you need to choose very carefully how you proceed with every NPC as they have their own lives and will impact others if something may happen to them.
The game is definitely worth it, just know what you are getting in to, the pace is slow and is not action driven. But if you are into this type of games, you are going to like it.
I am 8 to 10 hours into it and I am really enjoying the time spent so far.
Also, there is a great and original concept behind it and that is something I always appreciate.

[Edit after finishing the game]: The end is really boring and long and the final boos fight is lazy, absurdly simple and generic. I would have really appreciate a fast travel in the game, as you spend way too much time walking around the map. Also, the enemies respawning in the same corners every time just gets really annoying.
Overall downgrading it to a 6.

Don't Nod studios is a AA development team - so firstly lets get this "it's not AAA quality" trash out of here. Because aside from the fact that it IS a smaller dev group, the game manages to shine in many ways reminiscent of a large budget title - and one way that outshines even the greatest AAA games.

I'm speaking of the games social mechanics, which work similarly (yet more refined)

Because aside from the fact that it IS a smaller dev group, the game manages to shine in many ways reminiscent of a large budget title - and one way that outshines even the greatest AAA games.

I'm speaking of the games social mechanics, which work similarly (yet more refined) to the "Nemesis" system in LoTR.

Meaning: each area of the game consists of persistent AI - each of whom you have the option to learn more about via missions or dialogue, but you also have the option to kill. Doing the latter grants huge XP boosts, while keeping the citizens in good health ultimately adds to your overall good boy points and allows you the ability to see far more of the well-told if not standard story.

It's a very delicate risk reward system that keeps you wondering whether its worth risking killing a major player in the plot or sub-plot for the ability to dispatch baddies more effectively.

At a certain point, the game seemingly forces you into making a decision to end a life. Not that its impossible to progress, simply far more difficult to play saint over sinner.

My one gripe is the voicing of the protagonist. He's plain enough to start, the bitter definition of bleak as far as protagonists go - but I never got any true sense of emotion from the voicing. It was bland, overall - and when EVERY SINGLE other NPC is voiced so well, couple with tremendous ambient noise and a decent soundtrack its even more frustrating to play as this dullard.

Still, it doesn't hamper the experience overall - and if you crave some Western RPG action akin to Bloodborne meets KOTOR - this is a really good bet. 2 hours in and you'll be hooked. I really cant understate just how impressed I was with the AI and social mechanic as well as the UI that connected it all.

Fast and crunchy combat, great sound, good story - but that RPG and social depth is where its at. Definitely don't sleep on this one. 9/10

It's the game mechanics & bugs that let it down (on PS4 Pro v 1.06). It ran okay at the beginning, but the longer I played it, the more the little quality of life (or lack thereof) bugged the hell out me.

Long load times & random loading pauses while just wandering around, especially if you decide to change direction quickly. The random ones aren't too bad as they're short, but there's doors that load into new areas that have long loading screens. Unfortunately, they are marked exactly the same as the doors that don't lead to a new area & have no loading times, so if you click on the wrong door, you have to watch a red bar on a black screen doing nothing, & then again to get back where you were.

Controls don't react for a while after un-pausing the game. If you paused it in the middle of a fight, hope you get lucky.

Controls in a fight don't always work at all. The main 2 attacks & dodge always work, but the specials are a bit hit & miss. I've sat hammering L1 for heal 10 times, & nothing happens. If it was the cooldown timer that would be fine, but it's not. Multiple event one shot cheap deaths immediately after a long loading screen because the controls aren't responding is not cool.

If you get a trophy & press the PS button to see it, when you go back to the game, it's quite often frozen up, especially on cutscenes which can turn into a 1 frame per minute slideshow.

It sometimes crashes on the loading screens, but as the red bar takes so long to initally move, you can't always tell for a while.

If the mechanics were solid, I would really like this game, but the frustration by the beginning of the final chapter have made me put it down, & I won't finish it. Pity

Unlike traditional rpgs, here each person has a double value: you can simply feel rewarded by helping NPCS, unlocking their background or...
NPCs can be killed for experience points: the healthier they are, the more you receive.
The game encourages (but punishes, more on that later) to level up in order to face the various enemies you can find in the game.
As it turns out, the more you kill, the more "hostile" the environment will be, especially if you kill the loved one of a "still alive" NPC.
Combat unfortunately is a hit or miss, a more refined solution would have made the game a lot better.
Although I have not finished the game yet, I have enjoyed my time with it and I really hope a sequel will happen at some point.
Might update once I finish the game...

Now, the bad: The combat is mediocre at best. It uses a semi-Dark Souls like system of locking on and a stamina meter for keeping you from spamming attacks on enemies. You have a limited amount of Vampire powers to use against a fairly small amount of enemies but the biggest issue comes from if you want to NOT use the games touted feature of feeding on NPCs to give yourself XP. The XP amounts you get from combat and even quest is a piddling amount compared to what you get if you drain an NPC you got to know and did a sidequest for, but the consequences for draining NPCs can be unknown at the time you make them, and usually blow up in your face without fail at a later time in the game no matter how scummy the NPC you drain.
Still there hasn't been an RPG vampire centric game in ages so it's still good in that regard.

Vampyr is unique. It’s not beautiful, its combat leaves much to be desired and its limited budget shows, but if you choose to turn a blind eye to these flaws, it will captivate you with its mature, morally ambiguous story and a series of dilemmas that usually lack a “right” answer.
