What we need to keep in mind is that its a AA game. And the game is really done well considering its budget and limitations. Spectacular level design and atmosphere. Strong and interesting story-line.

Very good RPG with a beautiful story. I hope they make a sequel for this game.

The decisions you make effect the game specifically and you can experience this.

But this game is story driven, not just standard hack&slash or action RPG.
And Atmosphere is the most beautiful part of the game. It is really create a feeling like you are in the game:
Details. It is beautifully created world with lots of details. For eg. just look in the windows and you could see the room with furniture and other staff inside. There are some flaws like - 3 same paintings in the mansion (sure people have a money to purchase different painting). But the rest is so beautifully recreate the gloomy atmosphere
Music. It is support the dark atmosphere and perfectly match other details
Gameplay. Surprisingly it is very enjoyable. Something between Dark Souls and Witcher. Each time you are develop your character, the battle become more interesting.
Characters. The crucial part of the game. They are very well developed and implemented with own personalities. And you could kill everyone :) but look, they are so awesome, that my first playthrough i tried to keep everyone alive, but the story and you actions could lead to unexpected course of events. And the world is adapt, if you kill someone, next night his wife could already be with another man and related persons are saying about his death. And this is so influent. Wasteland 3? maybe it has more variety of the choices, but for me they are more straightforward.

    Cons:
Sure this game wasn't develop by big Company, and not so polished as RDR2, the movements and some texture is not so superb, but creators made a fantastic game with resources they have.

I score 10/10 because i would like the team to continue what they are doing, it is really outstanding games with the soul compare to EA and Ubisoft games focused on your money not the game itself.

Combat was basically my only concern for this game, and that's exactly where this game failed me. Plot wise its an interesting game and has some interesting concepts, graphics wise the studio managed to bring that dark eerie feeling that we were expecting, only the combat system is really poor and disappointed me.

This game wasn't interesting from the first sight, and I tried it only because it is from Dontnod. When i progressed deep into the story, it started showing potentional. Really amazing game, because of the atmosphere, the design, the story and maybe even the combat. However, I still think they should stick to the Life is Strange series, because they're amazing at that, and they are new in this.

The game takes place in 1918 London, with eerie atmosphere and old buildings all around you. I must say that they have captured World War 1 London quite good. It gives off a proper Vampiric vibe and it instantly got me comfortable in their world.

The game takes place in 1918 London, with eerie atmosphere and old buildings all around you. I must say that they have captured World War 1 London quite good. It gives off a proper Vampiric vibe and it instantly got me comfortable in their world.

Social Network: First thing to note, you'll be doing a LOT of talking. It requires you to find out everything you can about the people in it and their social network. You can tell with your Vampiric Vision if a person's blood is clean or not and you can also create serums in order to heal them, so that they'll provide more exp if you decide to kill them. If you leave the people that are sick, the district's health level will get lower and lower until there is an epidemic and most of that district's citizens are wiped out. If you do decide to kill a person, you can "mesmerise" him to take him somewhere out of sight and depending on the person, they'll provide a massive XP boost in order for you to get more skills and enhance your abilities.

Lore: The Lore is really enjoyable and informative. I love it when a game goes deep into the lore as it makes it feel more real. The vampiric abilities do not only explain what they do, but what actually happens as well, for example it states that Vampires can use their incredibly fast reactions and speed which makes it SEEM like they disappear into a puff of smoke and pop up elsewhere, not actually teleport.

Story: I haven't gotten that far in the game so I can't really tell, and I don't want to say something that may be a spoiler either, however it got me hooked from the get go as soon as it started. It's mysterious and slow paced, so you'll be finding out things at a slow pace. You are a Doctor, a blood transfusion specialist to be exact (how ironic). As a brilliant doctor, you are respected and admired even though some Doctors do not approve of your methods. You are not above using your influence and authority as a Doctor to get what you want. As a vampire, you'll have to be invited into people's homes before you can enter, and you can also break a person's psyche in order to make them tell you the truth.

Combat: Oh damn, this is lackluster. The combat doesn't make you feel powerful at all as the skills the hits don't really have that impact to them when they hit. The movement of characters is clunky and feels like i'm playing a generic low budget PS3 game. I was not expecting much from the combat as from what I had seen it had already looked a bit bland, but nevertheless I always like to try things out for myself. This is probably my biggest gripe with the game, as the vampiric skills they have are really awesome, but lack that OOMPH when you're actually using them.

Overall I'd say i'd give it a 7.5 out of 10 and recommend it to anyone who likes Vampires and eerie surroundings and atmosphere.

I just beat the game, not about to spoil anything but.... it's a game that often goes between good and great. Combat needed more polish, but it's still fun and makes you feel like a vampire. Though I think it's a bit of a letdown that there is no new game plus, not even a free roam after you beat the game, which makes matters worse when the game has no manual save options.
    Also you can

Though I think it's a bit of a letdown that there is no new game plus, not even a free roam after you beat the game, which makes matters worse when the game has no manual save options.
Also you can only get a good ending if you don't kill ANY citizens. And you get the most depressive ending when killing just a few.
Every other ending beside the pacifist one are terrible. Even if you decide to kill just 1 guy who had it coming. I was afraid the developers would do something like this. It's very disappointing.

it's clear that this game focuses more on story and dialogue choices than gameplay. But i really wish they had had focused more on the animations, they look very outdated. Don't get me wrong it's still a fun game, but you can unlock several skills but can't use all of them during combat without going into customizations menu, as there are only the 4 shoulder buttons to assign them on.
And even if you could use them all at once, there is no incentive, as to unlock most of them you'd have to kill a lot of people, knowing that you are going to get one of the bad endings.

Still it was not a bad game. This game had the potential to become the best open world vampire rpg game out there.

I hope when and if a sequel comes out, the developers will do better with the story, but especially with the gameplay and animations. The game shines in its enviromental details and lighting, and each NPC feel important, some obviously more than others.
I think that most people who are giving this game a poor rating, doesn't seem to realise that no other vampire game has ever done anything like Vampyr: Where you feel like a vampire, you evolve as one according to your choices, and you blend in in an open world.... but the odd choice was to have your eyes look more demonic once you feed on a civilian, and yet somehow no one treats you any differently because of it. Another odd thing is that feeding on civliians gives you a chunk of exp, while if you feed on vampire hunters, even if not fully, gives you little to no exp. There should have been an option to sneak up on drain them fully like you would a civilian. But instead unless your bite attacks are fully upgraded, you will only take a small sip and do a little damage.
One thing is certain: if the developers create a sequel, using this first game as its foundation and improving on everything, it could possibly become one of the best RPG games out there, on par with the Witcher 3. But as it stands now. It needs more work. But considering how even the very first witcher game started out compared to this. I believe Vampyr has a shining future, as long as the developers can remain passionate about this game.

Vampyr’s intriguing story and innovative gameplay mechanics make it a worthy purchase. It’s a shame the game has an abundance of frame rate drops and glitches ,but the setting and overall gameplay mechanics do make up for it. So for example, though the combat (probably the game's weakest feature) gets repetitive, you never spend long stretches in combat. Likewise, even though Vampyr contains a lot of dialogue, you can take it pretty easy and learn about the characters at your leisure. Nothing in the game is particularly original or deep, but it's all done well enough that the little spoonfuls you get make for a great adventure.

    I've heard complaints that it's a full-priced game, but I didn't feel like I wasted a cent. If you find it on sale, it's a must-buy

The Gas lamp lit streets of London are interesting to explore and offer plenty of collectibles and vampires to battle. The other side of the game is the investigation/interrogation side of the game. Anyone familiar with the last few Sherlock Holmes games will recognize the rich and well written dialogue sections with NPCs you'll come to know. Many games claim that "your choices matter" but with Vampyr it very much true in that you will need to balance your surgeon vocation in helping the wounded and sick as well as your vampiric desires in determining who and when you should feed. On the surface it may seem like an over ambitious game, but it's rather humble in it's execution and as I stated before, it all comes together quite nicely. As some of the other rational user reviews have stated; This is NOT a AAA game, it's a AA game, so don't go into thinking it'll have the polish of a mainstream AAA title. If you liked DONTNOD's previous games Remember Me and Life is Strange than you'll have a good idea what kind of passion project this is. If you like the Sherlock Holmes games and don't mind a little action thrown in than you'll be pleasently surprised. I'd give the game an 8/10, but most of the negative user reviews are clearly trolls, for whatever reason, so I'm going to give it a 10 on here. Expand

    Pros:

Story: The story was a decent 9. Minor flaw was the forced romance that doesn't suit a game with multiple choices and consequences. You play as Dr Reid and renowned surgeon in blood transfusions(see the irony) and upon acquiring his powers he goes on an investigation to understand what happened to him and what that means to the world. The way they present the lore on vampires and backstory for each character is amazing. But the main story can stand on its own. How your character progresses through his predicaments throughout the story and how he copes with it is entirely up to the player. I would say in a way, you kinda create your own story.

World: Its an amazing visual representation of London back in 1900. It really feels like the city is decaying due to the disease. Its very dark. And the game makes you feel safe in populated zones. But when you go outside the safe areas, it feels like all hell has broken loose. Dead people around the corner, abandoned and creepy houses. You never know when a Skal is going to creep out on you. It was really well designed. The world seems alive. And NPCs arent just there to move the story forward but to make you live/roleplay the game a little bit. You can feed of any NPC at a given time and the game motivates you to learn more about the character before doing so. Once you get to know their backstory you get to make the moral decision of feeding or not on them. And you have to live with the consequences of your actions and how your action may affect the relations between NPCs or the world.

Replayability: You get 4 different endings depending on your playstyle. Makes it worth at least playing twice to see how playing good vampires vs evil vampires plays out and differs from one another.

    Cons:
Romance: The romance was the biggest issue with the story. It felt hurried and forced on you. There are no signs that the characters like each other and then suddenly its just there. It was weirdly done. I wish they add some more voice dialogue between them or at least make it optional.

Like most double-A productions you'll notice things like dated graphics and some technical issues that stem from having been made on a middling budget. However, developer DONTNOD Entertainment shows once again that they are one of the most creative names working in the industry today, and the unique ideas and compelling world they've crafted here make this title worth playing in spite of its faults.

Set in a plague-ridden London during the 1900s, this is a vampiric power fantasy mixed with a detective simulator (quests are even called "investigations") that lets you play doctor on the side. As you search for a cure for the epidemic that's sweeping the continent you'll be faced with a lot of morally gray decisions that will have serious impacts on the world around you. For example, a choice I made relatively early on in the story that seemed solid inadvertently led to an entire district descending into chaos, with a portion of its inhabitants either going missing, joining a gang, or turning into hideous monsters.

By far the most intriguing decisions you'll grapple with though are directly tied to the game's main hook. Every non-hostile NPC you come across can be fed on for a massive boost in experience points at the cost of their lives. While uncovering their secrets, healing them when they're sick, and completing side-quests for them offers a meager amount of EXP on its own, it also serves the purpose of enriching their blood and making it more profitable for you turn them into your next meal later on down the line. This mechanic creates an interesting dynamic where you can either help people out of the goodness of your own heart or raise them like cattle for the slaughter in order to get more powerful.

This is a significant feature because it essentially allows you to pick your own difficulty level. Choosing not to feed on people will ensure the world remains stable, but will make the overall game harder as enemies will always be at higher levels than you. Meanwhile, taking the alternative path and killing the locals for their blood will cause the city's status to deteriorate, but will allow you to unlock the most powerful abilities and can make combat a breeze. You can also strike a balance between the two options and only devour a portion of the population you deem unworthy of life.

In an impressive move DONTNOD put a lot of work into ensuring each character you encounter has a fully fleshed out backstory and set of motives. I met everyone from heartless serial killers to selfless hospital workers and plenty of types in-between. You can decide if the city would be better off without someone or not if you want to and that's a really cool feature. My one issue with it is that I never found talking to any of them to be all that interesting as your relationships with them never really go anywhere unless they are significant to the main story. So the only reason I ever bothered interacting with and learning about anyone was to get stronger, and even then I found myself skipping through most of the dialogue.

As far as issues go, this is far from the prettiest title on the market, but even the plastic looking character models can't rob this moody, gothic version of London of its personality and atmosphere. Load screens are long and you can even run into some random ones while exploring. I also experienced a few crashes. The biggest problems though are the lack of a fast travel system which leads to a lot of backtracking to and fro across the city and some trouble with the balancing at the very beginning and tail end of the game that are the result of enemies being too highly scaled above you. Part of this is intentional though to goad you into draining the NPCs of life as a means of somewhat simulating for you the protagonist's struggle with his constant thirst for blood. Which is creative, but frustrating nonetheless. There is a "story mode" where you won't have to worry about difficulty at all and can solely focus on the narrative, but playing that way locks you out of being able to get a certain trophy.

While known more today for their episodic, Telltale style adventure games, Vampyr like Remember Me before it makes a strong case for why DONTNOD should break out of their comfort zone more often. While they still weren't able to find the same level of critical acclaim here as they were with their Life is Strange series, they still created an exciting RPG based on original concepts that's worth looking at. Especially since its faults this time are more technical in nature rather than inherent to the actual design itself.

Because aside from the fact that it IS a smaller dev group, the game manages to shine in many ways reminiscent of a large budget title - and one way that outshines even the greatest AAA games.

I'm speaking of the games social mechanics, which work similarly (yet more refined) to the "Nemesis" system in LoTR.

Meaning: each area of the game consists of persistent AI - each of whom you have the option to learn more about via missions or dialogue, but you also have the option to kill. Doing the latter grants huge XP boosts, while keeping the citizens in good health ultimately adds to your overall good boy points and allows you the ability to see far more of the well-told if not standard story.

It's a very delicate risk reward system that keeps you wondering whether its worth risking killing a major player in the plot or sub-plot for the ability to dispatch baddies more effectively.

At a certain point, the game seemingly forces you into making a decision to end a life. Not that its impossible to progress, simply far more difficult to play saint over sinner.

My one gripe is the voicing of the protagonist. He's plain enough to start, the bitter definition of bleak as far as protagonists go - but I never got any true sense of emotion from the voicing. It was bland, overall - and when EVERY SINGLE other NPC is voiced so well, couple with tremendous ambient noise and a decent soundtrack its even more frustrating to play as this dullard.

Still, it doesn't hamper the experience overall - and if you crave some Western RPG action akin to Bloodborne meets KOTOR - this is a really good bet. 2 hours in and you'll be hooked. I really cant understate just how impressed I was with the AI and social mechanic as well as the UI that connected it all.

Fast and crunchy combat, great sound, good story - but that RPG and social depth is where its at. Definitely don't sleep on this one. 9/10

The goal of the game is to investigate the nature of his newfound status, while at the same time keeping the "human" side by helping the people around him.
Unlike traditional rpgs, here each person has a double value: you can simply feel rewarded by helping NPCS, unlocking their background or...
NPCs can be killed for experience points: the healthier they are, the more you receive.
The game encourages (but punishes, more on that later) to level up in order to face the various enemies you can find in the game.
As it turns out, the more you kill, the more "hostile" the environment will be, especially if you kill the loved one of a "still alive" NPC.
Combat unfortunately is a hit or miss, a more refined solution would have made the game a lot better.
Although I have not finished the game yet, I have enjoyed my time with it and I really hope a sequel will happen at some point.
Might update once I finish the game...

Dontnod (the studio that in the past released Life is Strange and Remember Me) went their darkest, moodiest and most ambitious route with 2018's Vampyr and it pays of at (almost) every corner.

Vampyr is truly impressive in using its smaller studios limited resources to make a game that really comes across like the immersive period piece that it set out to portray. Taking place in a living city style open-world (a la Dragon Age 2's albeit unpopular model) Vampyr takes a risk by having you spend upwards of 20-30 hours running back and forth across the same four districts but damn does it do a good job at making those hours enjoyable and adrenaline pumping!

As Dr. Jonathan Reid you are almost immediately tasked with the ethical dilemma of whether or not to consume the residents of London amidst also trying to save them from a devastating flu-like epidemic, and if you're not ready to take some innocent sick people lives then you're going to have a tough time! The developers often discussed their difficulty being adaptive to how many lives you took as a Vampire (it being easier with the more citizens you "embrace" and harder vice-versa). I found that every group of even as small as 2 or 3 enemies was a test of my skills in combat. Thankfully, the game is leveled well enough that the challenge never seems overbearing but when it did ultimately get dangerously close to that point, the game does a marvelous way of "reminding" you that combat would be "oh so easy" if you just took one bite out of good 'ol Rufus the Orphan.

While I heavily enjoyed the combat (something I was honestly surprised about from the responses I'd seen prior to playing the game myself) Vampyr is very clearly a dialogue and choice driven narrative experience. I clocked in around 26 hours on my first play-through and I would guess that a good 15 of those are just spent between listening to characters moan about their slowly decaying health and me sitting on my couch at home deciding which probably bad but irreversible decision I was about to make.

The decisions in Vampyr are truly where I feel that it stands out amongst other choice based games in regards to both innovation and originality, though there are times where the game ends up on the downward spiral of being just a little too ambitious with its sprawling amount of player choice. The auto-save only approach, the "no going back" style that permeates Vampyr's decisions makes them have so much WEIGHT that I stopped myself on multiple occasions from googling the "right" decision for each of the games varied conundrums.

The journey of discovering the cause of the epidemic is one of continuous intrigue and pretty consistently subverted cliche but the only spot where I truly felt a little dissapointed with my time playing was in the last few hours of the campaign. Maybe it's the conditioned part of the player in me but I expected to see more consequences play out on screen and to see more characters from earlier maintain their relevance. You do get to the end of most of the side-stories earlier in the game and a lot of consequences are displayed before the final act or at least are explained via conversation but I felt as though my time with the side stories of London and my choices became simply uninvolved with where the story had gone in its last act. It made sense but that didn't stop me from wanting to know where things went after I did my damage. Was it a big deal? Not really, but I do think it would've been nice to have more time to contemplate your actions in the end. Also, they shoe-horn in some pretty heavy romantic vibes that I felt should've really been more player choice dependent if it was to keep in theme with the games focus on narrative malleability and it's the only note in the campaign where I really feel that it doesn't hit.

Vampyr is not about the Paragon, Renegade and Flippant Grey choice that so many RPG's have adopted in recent years. Not to say that those were bad in their time but more to point out that I feel like Vampyr is really innovative with the way that it tackles choice. I set out to do a pacifist run, as is common with me for RPG's, but even though I was dead set at the start with getting the ever so sought after "perfect" ending, I found myself "Embracing" three citizens of London (in my defense they were all terrible people!) but I genuinely left feeling like my choices were still morally understandable. Vampyr narratively lives in the grey. Not all Vampires you meet are bad, quite the contrary actually, and not all people you meet are that great either.

My experience with Vampyr was really unique and for anyone who loves role playing and is in it for the dialogue, the choices, and the consequences, this is definitely a game worth playing.

The focus of the game is telling a compelling story with authentic characters in a grim setting, dealing with consequences and impact of your choices. The story takes place in London during the Spanish flu shortly after World War I. The Spanish flu was the most deadly influenza pandemic in the history of mankind. The death toll was bigger than World War I and is estimated to be between 25 and 50 million. You play as Jonathan Reid a doctor who returned home from his service in World War I. Before you get home you were attacked and turned into a Vampire. Your creator left you without help, information, advice or even a clue who he was. Here the game begins after a blow of fate caused by your turning. The story and decisions are the main appeal. Like in a detective story you try to find your creator, what purpose your new life had and the secrets behind the Spanish flu. You are always trapped between your oath as doctor and your vampiric nature. You are the medical caretaker of one and later a few districts of London. Here the unique system starts to work. You get nearly no experience from battles. Regardless of levels enemies give only 5 xp. However sucking blood from civilians give from 500 xp to multiple thousand xp and always results in killing the civilian. The clue is that the more you know about a person the more xp you get by sucking / killing. Also it makes it harder because they took effort to make genuine characters with their own life's, philosophies, burdens, problems and reasons. Even the ones who committed crimes have reasons like caring for relatives or poor people. Each district has a health meter. All civilian can become ill and if you don't heal them the illness will get worse or spread. As the health meter decreases people will vanish and stronger enemies will appear up to losing the district with all civilians and merchants. Blood sucking / killing civilians also decreases the health meter. Lastly each district has a patron (leader / guardian) with high xp value and huge impacts of the health meter. Good look with dealing with their fates (I lost 1 district by making a merciful decision but must admit that it was stupid because I overestimated the characters will power and motives). Here you will say you can just reload an earlier save. No, you cant! This game gives you the consequences of your decisions. You have 1 save slot for each new game (3 in total). All decisions will stack. I need also to mention that you can only level up by sleeping at a safe-house which ends a day and all actions will be processed (People not saved die, Ill people you healed get well, not treated peoples health got worse, some will catch a new illness and the results of mayor decisions will happen). Depending on your preferences this is the make or break point of the game. If you don't enjoy this mechanic it is probably a 3/10 game for you or even less. I like this mechanic as it gave all my actions / decisions impact. And yes I restarted my game because I did not like an outcome. This is actual a positive because it showed me that I care for the people and game world. Then there is the xp system I already mentioned above. You can get small amounts of extra xp by curing people, small to medium amounts at side quests and big amounts by continuing the main story. But you will never be overpowered without blood sucking. This gave also impact on your decision. I tried to save everyone and often had to fight enemies above my weight class. It made this game more intense and gave temptations (Also a positive for immersion). The battle system worked well for me. Some of the other reviewers had problems. I had none but I will say it depends on your preferences. Some like the systems of the Witcher 3, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Souls or Zelda and others say the battle system in these games is beyond broken. I want also praise the non civilian NPCs. They took care to develop authentic characters that worked really well because they gave me immersion and I cared for them. There are some negatives I want to mention: There is no quick travel system in this game. It is a semi open world and I wanted more. Overall this is a game you should at least try because it does something that no other game tried (As far as I know). I will give 10 /10 because of that and the immersive world, characters, story and because the budget and resources were limited. Bonus: You should definitely look up the Wikipedia article for William Marshall 1st Earl of Pembroke. Expand

Vampyr is one of those sleeper B-games that is going to be talked about a great deal in a couple years, despite the fact that it'll be like $17 at GameStop.

It's basically a SoulsBorne-inspired, vampire-themed game, but rarely will you find a game wherein your basic decision making has such great effect on what's going on around you. Now, it isn't executed perfectly, particularly at endgame, but it's still better than anything I've seen.

The strongest and most interesting aspect of the game is your interaction with the NPCs. Throughout the game, by doing side quests, finding notes, journals, etc, you unlock special dialogue options for each person in the game which improve their "blood quality," or the amount of XP you get from "embracing" them, or drinking their blood. Interestingly, every single NPC in the game is of value - there are no bumbling characters who just say "good day!" and ignore you. All of them have a place, relationships with one another and interesting stories to tell, like mob leader and a pair of PTSD-suffering soldiers who are secret lovers. Those that you choose to embrace are erased from the game permanently, and the relationships they have will suffer as a result. The trade-off is that drinking blood is the biggest source of XP in the game, so learning the most you can about someone before embracing them is critical. However, each time you kill, the general health of the district falls - people get colds, headaches and fever which reduce their "blood quality." Luckily, as a doctor, you can cure them by crafting medicine, but these won't last forever.

This mechanic starts to fall apart when it becomes hard to find citizens (who aren't marked on the map and move around town), hints required to raise blood quality aren't easy to find (and the game gives no hints to their location) and some even require you to kill other people to unlock them. In other words, it's impossible (or at least very hard and time consuming) to maximize blood quality without at least killing some people or just wandering the streets looking for a note hidden somewhere. If you don't keep on top of curing citizens' sicknesses, as well, it gets completely out of control and unreasonable to manage - you'd have to spend hours finding each one to heal them. Additionally, if you let them all get too sick or kill too many people, the district will "fail," and it will be repopulated by enemies. The writing and voice acting are good, and you do a LOT of talking for quests and blood quality alike. It never feels painful, but if you're impatient you may be bothered.

The plot is reasonably well-explained throughout. Side quests are unrelated to and do not distract from the primary goal. The intrigue of the main quest builds nicely and comes to a satisfying conclusion, depending on how many citizens you kill and how many districts "fail."

Combat is fine. Taking from SoulsBorne and Nioh it incorporates a stamina bar for you and a posture-like bar for them. The primary attack does damage, and the secondary attack damages posture. By depleting posture you can drink their blood, which replenishes your blood (basically magic energy) and health, if you upgrade it. Weapon upgrading is satisfying and helpful. Character progression is a bit confusing, giving you more options than you can actually use, and basically coming down to raising you special attack damage, health, stamina and blood pool. Boss encounters are sometimes unpredictably much harder than the local enemy population, and you may have to go back and kill a few citizens or upgrade weapons to level up to manage a boss. "Grinding" isn't really an option, because every single enemy is worth only 5 XP (drinking blood averages about 3000, for instance), whether that enemy is 10 levels below you and takes 2 hits or 3 above you and is a full-blown 3 minute encounter.

My primary complaint was the map and the travel situation. There is absolutely no fast travel, the map is very serpentine and confusing and contains lots of doors that will conveniently lock or unlock based on quest progress. There's a whole sewer network (which is very important at end game) which is all twisting tunnels that does not even appear on the map, leaving you to circle endlessly until you get lucky and find the path you wanted. The game will also unpredictably freeze for a loading period as you run through the map. The guidance doesn't help much; you basically have to open the map every 5-10 seconds before you make a turn so you don't run halfway across the map in the wrong direction.

All together, the combat is serviceable, the NPC interactions are very strong, the acting and story are good and the quirks are minor. For a B-game, it's excellent. For a blockbuster, it's still pretty good.

But the game does fail when it comes to how the few choices you can make regarding the main character's path are implemented. Too often it felt like the game was railroading me into doing things that made no sense for how I was playing the MC outside of the main storyline. And I also think the morality system needed some more tweaking.
I just don't think it's very logical that the game just goes 'biting people wrong, not biting people good.' Especially because there are a few characters in the game that are actively hurting their environment. it'd make more sense to make it morally wrong for MC to not intervene when they come across one of those people, rather than pretending it's moral to let (let's say) a murderer roam free.

If they flesh out the morality system a bit more, and give the player more true choice when it comes to the path of the main story, a sequel or spiritual sequel would be brilliant.

Vampyr is a 3rd person action RPG, narrative-focused were ALL of your actions matter. The idea o Vampyr is to make you walk one of two paths: you either play as a vampire, kill NPCs and get stronger, or contain yourself and become weaker. Thus, you are confronted with moral questions all the time. I`ll leave my thoughts to you because although this game is great (and I recommend it), it has some issues that need to be addressed.

    Pros:
    - The meat of this game is the narrative. The background is London during the Spanish flu. The story is awesome in all aspects and you will feel you are there. There are no gaps in this story, thus, you see the writer really cared about this game. The ambiance is perfect and the characters are believable. Talk to everyone and explore the whole game, it is worth it.
    - Your decisions matter. This is not like so many other games that claim they have decisions and, in the end, they mostly don`t matter at all. In here, whoever you kill, the decisions you make an impact in the world.
    - The characters are believable and with real personalities. It is a lot of fun investigating them, trying to understand their motivations and real goals. This is important to the plot also because you will be struggling to see "is this person deserving of my bloodlust or not"? This game leaves you hanging as the role of judge, jury, and executioner, which is pretty well done.
    - The artwork is PERFECT. Man, if there is some good artwork that should be contemplated is the one from Vampyr. Holy damn, this game is beautiful.
    - Ambiance sound: play this game with headphones, because hearing the background sounds makes the game 10x more terrifying. You hear all sorts of horrific sounds in the night.
    - Dialogs: they are not long or short. Right on point, with objective and useful information. They do not make you waste your time, which is perfect.

    Cons:
    - Combat. The combat is clunky and needs a lot of polishing. It does not affect the game negatively, no, it does not come to that, but it sure annoys you sometimes, especially due to camera issues. Also, the game does not make good use of all the skills they provide. You will mostly make a melee build of a ranged one.
    - Sound problems. There are some sound problems in this game. I had the following: in one fight, the sound bugged so much I had to restart the PS4 [other gamers had the same problem]. In multiple time during both gameplay, the sound bugged and was absent. Most of these times, it came back naturally, but I had to wait around 15 min at a point.
    - Too many useless weapons. The game gives you tons of weapons, but 80% are just useless. You will always play with the same ones over and over.

Overall, don`t miss this game. It is a masterpiece of artwork, amazing story, decisions that really matter, super enjoyable. Just know that it has some issues, but they will not really affect your experience, don`t worry!

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a demi-god among a flock of weak humans? Vampyr brings this feeling across perfectly.

Vampyr is an action-rpg with a heavy focus on storytelling. You play as Dr. Jonathan Reid, a World War I Surgeon and specialist in blood transfusion. After you return from the war to visit your mother in London, you are bitten and turned into a vampire during a leisurely stroll. At first you are presumed dead, but it turns out you have become an Ekon (humanoid vampire). You are introduced to London after accidentally murdering your sister Mary and seeing the death caused by the Spanish Flu. During an investigation regarding the outbreak, you will find out there's more going on than meets the eye...

The gameplay focusses on two aspects: Micromanagement of citizens, and combat. London is divided into several districts, with each having their own community of citizens. These people play a narrative role, and the same time serve as your food. Depending on your playstyle you can choose to embrace (suck the blood out of) citizens or choose to spare them, which also creates a more challenging playthrough. Citizens give a large amount of experience that can be spend on upgrading your skills and make you more powerfull. But on the downside, it will negatively impact the health status of their respective districts. By sparing citizens you will miss out on a lot of experience points, and thus the combat will be much harder as you are usually underleveled. Nonetheless, both playstyles create different experiences, and also different endings (4 endings in total).

As i played Vampyr i was thoroughly entertained by the well written story and interesting lore behind it. The citizens all have unique personalities, and learning their hints made me feel either liking or despising them. This plays into choosing who you want to embrace and who you want to spare.

The combat reminds me a bit of The Dark Souls gameplay, but this game is more focussed on speed and fighting groups of enemies. You can upgrade a grid of skills to suit your preferred playstyle (melee focussed, range focussed or stun focussed), with subtrees in certain skills as well. The combat itself feels basic, but is also challenging enough to be entertaining. There is a wide variety of enemies among several factions (Skalls, Guard of Priwen, Vampires and other vermin) that will challenge you in different ways.

As i feel very positive about the above mentioned features, i do have some recommendations for improvement if Dontnod entertainment decides to make a sequel:
    1) Repetitiveness
As the game progresses, conversations and district effects will start to feel more and more like a choir. The first district is interesting to micromanage as the hint mechanic still feels fresh, but by the time you enter the last district it will feel a bit chewed out. What could fix this is having more consequences from making choices, more ways to interact with citizens (escort missions, dates, combat), a more tied together social circle and more ways to influence citizens when you mesmerize them.
    2) Combat feels basic
The combat works fine, and you will feel like a demi-god if you choose to regularly embrace citizens. But at the same time it feels like their is little diversity in the combat style due to a few skills being very good and the rest being useless in comparison. As the game progresses, combat will not be much different as you keep using the same skills that get more powerfull over time. This could be fixed by having the skills be more balanced, but also more diverse and with more options (making enemies frenzied or insane, having enemies turn into ghouls that help you, spawn shadows that fight beside you).

All in all, i was very entertained by this game and had a great time. The story, lead character and the lore were so interesting that i hope Dontnod Entertainment makes a sequel. I give this game an 8/10, it is an excellent game.

Vampyr is an incredibly solid game. The story line is engaging, the atmosphere and tone are perfect. Every NPC has a quest related to them. The city can feel sparse at times (there is also a plague so it fits) but the interactions actually feel as if they matter. You get to choose who lives and who dies and you can slaughter almost the entire city and still complete the game. Which I always find is the mark of a well thought out RPG. I have heard people complain about the amount of dialogue, as an RPG fan this complaint doesn't make sense to me. I even noticed my wife lingering as I played a few times to catch what was happening.

The talent system and crafting are very accessible, nothing too complex. The available options make for some fun, if not repetitive (though which game isn't?) combat. The game stutters a bit here and there as you walk about the city but I really didn't find that to be the case even in the most populated battles I was a part of. Combat is enjoyable and reflexive. As fleshed out as many a triple A title.

Now my very favorite part of the game is simply the auto save feature. It's never far away if you need to exit for the night but it stops you from gaming it to your advantage if you made an incorrect choice. And choices do have consequences. The first time I absentmindedly (minor spoiler) destroyed an entire district, I was at first upset and then amazed that a game exists that doesn't hand hold to the extent most now do. It gave the options weight, something sorely missing from most modern RPGs.

Overall I think it's an extremely underrated title and if the developer had more $$ I think the critics would have been more kind.

My only issue with game was no fast travel mechanic. You will find your self going from a place on the far right of the map to the far left. This is frustrating and will take some time.

I still prevailed, forcing my Jonathan into blood abstinence through the very end and I do mean MY Jonathan. The game’s main character is by far my favourite thing in the game. Jonathan Reid truly felt like he belonged in this world, with a rich backstory, flaws and traits, political opinions and interest but giving me enough dialogue choices to tailor them to my own preferences. All the more surprised I was when I saw other people’s gameplay and how their Jonathan’s differed from mine completely but somehow had the same level of depth.
The NPC’s and their connection towards each other- is fun to explore and well implemented in the game. Aside from the awkwardly paced romance that the game sadly forces on the main character. The doctor-playing part of the game was a fun addition but nothing more than that.
The main story was absolutely amazing. It does everything right by introducing the fantasy aspects so slow and always tied into real-world occurrences that they almost start to sound believable. The writers have clearly done their research as I found myself looking through Wikipedia pages of the historical figures and events mentioned in the game during the (unbearably long) loading screens.
The developers made the most out of their rather limited supply of 3D assets so different areas all had their own feel to it.
But even with all the praise, there is just no way around mentioning the combat system.
Very few different types of enemies, slow character responses, horrible camera movements, the ‘best’ weapon can be found within the first hour of playing, the respawn mechanics are horrendously punishing, especially in closed-off areas with boss fights. Consumables do not respawn so if you have used them in your first attempt, died and came back…well…. Good luck.

I can’t bring myself to dislike this game however. It’s doing something new, and it is excelling at it.
it’s one of those titles that I can talk about even with friends who aren’t enthusiastic about videogames because it just has that much depth to offer. If only all aspects were as polished as the NPC system and the story so it could appeal to a brought mass giving Vampyr the popularity it deserves. But at least this way the developers can concentrate fully on tailoring it to a specific audience – of which I happily admit to be a part of.

    - The Street Fighter Series *(also the pokemon series)
    And now
    - Vampyr by Focus Home Interactive

The game has many beautiful qualities some are minor but they are gathering into an amazingly intresting experience:

    - You are the most tall person in any conversation, you feel important
    - Amazing graphics and music which are better than witcher 3 in my opinion
    - You truely feel like you are a vampire + doctor since the game is litteraly forcing you to multitask each persona at a time, and you must do both right or you will not win the game
    - The conversation requires actual gosship which is way more complax than the witcher 3
    - The first thing I thought was that I was going into a difficult game but this is not true, as a vampire you are an imposing force that litteraly never actually dies and can kill about 10 people before reaching low health (which regenerate) you are the strongest person in the world - which is why you can bring about change, which is futher emplified by being a doctor trying to make change and save people life, the nerative and the gameplay are dancing together which is insane in a game about punching things

For me, this is the perfect game, I wanted to buy this game but I was too bussy, then I got it for free from psplus, this is a golden game and I recommand you play it.

- too many characters and the main reason they got a short story and we expected to know more about them and never did
    - autosave. Maybe I press the wrong button or skip something... what then? Do I need to replay the game to resolve my mistake? You should at least have a save point after finishing a chapter. I don't want to replay everything again because I didn't understand a question at first or wasn't paying attention that second.
    - big loading screen and loading issues (PS4 PRO)

Overall the game is very good if you take into consideration the low budget. The ideas and main game are very good and if they had more money and a better engine then 100% of the game would get more love.
I hope their next game will be better and they will use a better engine.
Just keep it simple and fun. Don't make 100 documents, I like how it is now with less reading materials but more attention paid to them.
I gave it 8 because I think they had a great idea when doing the game. I think a great idea deserves to be encouraged and rewarded. Can't give it 10 because of all of the bad things and 9 is also not on the list for me because of the auto save and the fact that you can't enjoy the game if you replay it.

This game doesn’t get nearly enough love. The story is deep and does a great job of immersing you in the 1917 London setting - epidemic and all. The music is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE - some of the best music of any game I’ve played (10/10 for music). Jonathan Reid is the kind of protagonist you want to root for, despite him occasionally “snacking” on the townspeople, and the other characters in the game purposefully move the story along. The voice actors are top notch and despite the consistent hate this game gets for its graphics, I absolutely loved the feel. The creepy, dark, dank setting is perfect and I truly felt like a turn of the century doctor, meandering from town to town, healing the masses as I secretly feast on their kin in a dark alley behind the local pub. I played 3 full walkthroughs of this game and got 3 out of the 4 possible endings, and I enjoyed every minute. The only thing I wasn’t in love with was the combat. It felt a little janky/repetitive at times and by the end of the game I preferred running past enemies as opposed to fighting them. Overall, I give the game a 9/10 and I would highly recommend it to anyone that likes a rich story and a “choices have consequences” game model. Expand

Vampyr is a very interesting game, with differents points of view, i personally really like the fact that it as correct cultural information, and the sound tracka are just amazing. The way which interaction with the characters may change the outcome is incredible, the game makes you feel engaged with ste story. The only down side that i see is the combat because is not so fluid. Un buen juego. Posee una buena trama donde las desiciones realmente importan, buena música, buen sistema de combate aunque muy simple.
Como puntos negativos : La versión de PS4 tiene muchos bugs y el final es algo decepcionante.

Vampyr is a collection of wonderful ideas held back by a limited budget and a dated engine.

For those looking for a unique, dread-filled experience in the RPG realm, Vampyr offers a type of game seldom seen. But much like the streets of 1918 London, expect a few bumps along the way.

Vampyr is unique. It’s not beautiful, its combat leaves much to be desired and its limited budget shows, but if you choose to turn a blind eye to these flaws, it will captivate you with its mature, morally ambiguous story and a series of dilemmas that usually lack a “right” answer.
