A timeless masterpiece. So many amazing characters and moments. 3 distinct and different play throughs with unique encounters in all of them. Combat is funny and different to a normal JRPG. Amazing soundtrack as well.

It's really no surprise that so many people love this game. My biggest criticism is how easy the game can be on pacifist runs without self imposed challenges. The healing system is just way too forgiving and the game would have been better with some kind of hard difficulty selection for those of us that wanted a little bit more from the pacifist playthrough Expand

You just need enough money for the 15 Dognation Trophies (you can quit the game after getting the last Dognation trophy, keeping your money on your saved game) and to REACH the final area - you don't even have to enter it.
They should have locked at least one trophy against each completion imo but trophy hunters will at least be happy.

As a person who heard and never played Undertale on PC yet had a PS4, I was quite happy to hear the game was coming to the console and the Vita of all things. Hearing about it's achievements and awards it was given by even the most cynical of critics made me wonder much about the world of Undertale, so I was quite excited to jump on it and give it a run through. Hearing about it's achievements and awards it was given by even the most cynical of critics made me wonder much about the world of Undertale, so I was quite excited to jump on it and give it a run through. So does it deserve praise and acclaim then? Absolutely.

There is such a love and fervor for this game's design, from the characters, the way you interact with the encounters, the fourth-wall breaking that can nail you, as the player, into a realm of humor, emotion and even guilt as every act you commit yields a consequence or effect. The music is top-notch and despite the graphics and textures being a bit lackluster, the homage to older games from the 80s and 90s really makes Undertale a game that takes a bold concept, and executes very well for what it has. Despite the praises, however, I feel the need to hammer at the game for a few things that aren't dealbreakers by any means (an 8 to me is a GREAT score, everyone deserves a chance to play this kinda of thing) but I feel hold it back some.

The characters you encounter are definitely memorable, there is no doubt in my mind of this. The issue though is everything is VERY limited when doing things with them. It allows you to have a special moment with them once and doesn't show more of their side as they develop. Having a few more hangouts and conversations could make them far more powerful. Dating a skeleton should go alot farther and that's all I gotta say for that.

The combat can be a bit unfair for newcomers. The game employs turn base RPG with bullet hell mechanics mixed to create a very interactive hybrid that gives you a bit of depth to your choices. The reason I feel it's unfair is that some attacks come so quick and have little time to react that I died quite a bit from my engagements. There is also a moderate irritation of backtracking for certain things, whether that be items, dialogue or events. I do think there should have been a smarter way of handling this without making newcomers feel the groans of running all the back for something and realize it was a waste of time. It's a shame because the game has great pacing leading up to the finale and it's spent doing side things despite the creator trying not to employ those kind of things and tell us in the game "doing something is going to be remembered". The last bit I would say that irked me (more of preference but perhaps an issue for some) is the voices. While I respect the homage to older games like Banjo and Kazooie for having goofy voiceovers instead of voice actors, Undertale's characters "voice" sounds can be grating to listen to. It feels like going silent would have been a far better move in my opinion, but if you are use to this kind of talk then it's fine.

I do not want someone to misunderstand my 8/10 score. Undertale is a GREAT game that ends (the true ending of course) on a purely powerful and emotional note that speaks deep in not just the characters I encountered on my journey, but me as a person who has played games since I was a baby. $15 dollars for this game is honestly a no brainer and I recommend this to anyone interested in bold and new takes on current genres. While it has some issues that I feel can take away the experience much to the overwhelm of critical and fan acclaim it has now for almost 2 years, I completely understand more higher scores regardless. Undertale is a funny, emotional and interesting journey that pierces through your gaming soul in very clever ways.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. On September 15 2015 the hit indie sensation “Undertale” was released by Toby Fox onto the PC platform “Steam” where it quickly grew in popularity and fandom. However by April 2016 the game seemed to have died out in popularity. Today people will tell you the game is complete garbage. But how good was the game? To answer I played through the game 3 times (one for each route) to see just how good or bad this game really is.

When I first started the game I thought the lore was interesting: a world where humans and monsters once lived together but where the monsters were banished after a war in which the opposing kings lost their sons. I was intrigued by the art style chosen, an 8-bit sprite overworld, and during the dialogue and battle sequences a much more detailed (albeit still 8-bit) sprite, which looks absolutely gorgeous when animated. The tutorial is a bit bland, but the game kicks into high gear when the first boss fight (against the tutorial character conveniently named Toriel) If you kill her, you can go for one of 3 paths. The genocide route: the hardest path (It took me 1 hr and 23 mins to kill the final boss “Sans”) in which you kill every single monster programmed into the game. In Undertale unlike other games like pokemon, there are a finite number of monsters to kill. There is also a “Neutral” path, where players can kill as they please unlocking a different ending depending on the people they kill. And if you spare Toriel you can try for a pacifist route in which you don’t kill ANYTHING. If you beat the game in this fashion, you unlock a happy ending filled with all the monsters enjoying the sunshine for the first time in hundreds of years.

Usually I despise monotonous 8-bit video game music, but I loved the Undertale soundtrack, it is mostly a fusion of 8-bit and other real forms of music like bebop, rock, and classical. It compliments the aesthetic perfectly and opts you to capture the moment of the game and just listen for a bit. The only thing I really didn’t like about this game is what remains of the fandom. The fandom of most things is bad enough, but Undertale takes the case with bad fan art and OC’s. If you say ANYTHING bad about the game like “I think the overworld art could have been done a lot better”. They will swarm you like wasps telling you how Undertale is a masterpiece and could do no wrong. Although this is honestly all I could come up with that was negative about this game.
In all honesty the reason this game is no longer popular is because the fandom killed it. Butt I believe if the fandom wasn’t so bad, it would be held as a classic. I have to give the game 8 stars out of 10. The stunning visuals, and great gameplay, coupled with a stellar soundtrack, and astounding story. However the fandom keeps this game from the 10/10 it truly deserves.

I wouldn't say this game is "#2 Best PS4 Game of 2017" by any means. At least it was topped by Persona 5, a game deserving of a top spot. I'm going to keep it short and sweet.

Beautiful story, nothing quite like it. About to do my second play through. Fantastic soundtrack too. Very impressive from a single developer. I'll say that you can't really go in blind since most people doing that will probably not know that you absolutely MUST do the pacifist route to get by FAR the best ending.
As for the PS4 version: it's by far the easiest platinum I've ever gotten.

For what it is, though...I thought it was great. For the most part it's pretty laid back in terms of difficulty, although there were a few notable boss fights that were surprisingly challenging. There's a humour in the writing reminiscent of Earthbound, and there's actually a lot of depth to the characters and story once you get deeper into the game, especially on the second and third playthrough as you play a more merciful-or merciless-style of play. There were a few moments where I laughed out loud, and one battle in the game had my heart rate maxed out as I finally managed to beat it after about my 40th attempt.

It's a polarizing game for sure, especially if you're comparing it to AAA PS4 action/RPG or FPS games. But if you grew up playing and loving those 90's turn based RPG games, you will likely really enjoy this.

Despite the fact that Undertale didn't tick all my boxes, it was still an enjoyable game. Its visuals and music brought to mind some of my most cherished memories from my formative years, and are top-notch even for games that try to evoke that retro vibe. Its narrative is tongue-in-cheek and consistantly sends surprises the player's way. The game excels at asking players to enjoy it in ways that are incongruous with the traditional way RPGs are designed. Unfortunately, those looking for a more traditional experience may feel short-changed here. The lion's share of the game's character, lore, and emotional impact is experienced by challenging yourself to play the entire game in a completely different fashion.
