For what it is, though...I thought it was great. For the most part it's pretty laid back in terms of difficulty, although there were a few notable boss fights that were surprisingly challenging. There's a humour in the writing reminiscent of Earthbound, and there's actually a lot of depth to the characters and story once you get deeper into the game, especially on the second and third playthrough as you play a more merciful-or merciless-style of play. There were a few moments where I laughed out loud, and one battle in the game had my heart rate maxed out as I finally managed to beat it after about my 40th attempt.

It's a polarizing game for sure, especially if you're comparing it to AAA PS4 action/RPG or FPS games. But if you grew up playing and loving those 90's turn based RPG games, you will likely really enjoy this.

I invested myself into the plot for a bit, and i think it paid off. It doesnt really build up to the final battle, unfortunatly. This game gets a bit quirky at times. Even made me cringe. Yes, if you ignore all the bad fanart and crappy community cancer, this game does an OK job. Not a game i would recommend to all players, but i somehow got addicted to this game, however i feel like the game is spoiled by its fandom. I never got back to playing it after the fandom spilled out. This game was originally on pc, but then spilled onto Playstation. I don't know why they ported it since this game is a couple years old? I don't know. The visuals gives off the earthbound vibe from like the 1990's. Not saying its a bad thing, it might even be innovative. The soundtrack is good. i recieved it very well and thought it was always fitting, since this was made by one guy. The game is like only 4 HOURS LONG. (Angryjoe would be disappointed). There are "multiple endings", but its just different end text. THATS IT. 4 HOURS FOR THIS?! Very disappointing! Thats all from me, really.
Overall, Its an ok JRPG game. If you are a fan of JRPG's, i would probably recommend this game to you.

Dialogue seems to have great potential, then gets old. The combat system is really cool, and then doesn't quite add enough new to keep it fresh and exciting. The enemies are unique but ultimately not quite enough are introduced by the end. The only aspect that stays consistently awesome is the music. All the other elements would have you believe at first that this game is the magnificent gem reviewers are raving about, but ultimately are not fleshed out to warrant more than an average score. Undertale hits all the right marks to be fawned over by, say, a MetaFilter regular. It's indie, it's retro, it invites talk of "subverting the conventions" of its medium, and it is precious in its presentation. If you're a heinous bore, procrastinating on your postgraduate thesis, this game is aptly suited to accept the self-satisfied word salad you call an opinion.

If you're a heinous bore, procrastinating on your postgraduate thesis, this game is aptly suited to accept the self-satisfied word salad you call an opinion.

But it's easy to get distracted by the insufferable audience of a work, and that's not being fair. I actually do see value in subverting conventions: having the consequences of killing a character dog you even when you've reloaded a previous save, and the range of aggressive or pacifist actions you can take, offer some interesting perspective on the kinds of worlds that most games portray (where violent catharsis is the sole solution).

I don't care much about any nostalgic element to the presentation, but I like that it's too low res for the disgusting anime styles of modern RPGs to be rendered, that there's no awful voice acting.

The character development presented a satisfying enough blend of motivations and conflicts (though the game does get up its own ass a bit in this regard), and seeing the conflicted motives of the "enemies" play out in real time, within the battle mechanic was kind of neat.

    That mechanic, though...

There are worthwhile experiments, and there are genuinely enjoyable experiences, and the primary mechanic for winning battles in this game makes it one of the former.

But it is a little too dark, the fun loving and child like aesthetic deceive you into this rather creepy game. I found myself unwilling to begin playing, but as I did, it didn't seem that bad. That's because it depends on how you play the game, it encourages you to not kill anything, so unassuming old me did exactly what Toriel instructed me to do. I played the game again after experiencing the true lab, only to find out what happens when you actively kill everything. It kept me up at night. you can call me a woos but I wasn't going anywhere near that game, I don't do horror usually, so it was the same kind of shock I would get reading a creepy pasta. There are some very eerie undertones to Undertale, so keep that in mind when you, or your five year old decide to give it a go Expand

Don't get me wrong - The Pacifist Route and Neutral Routes of Undertale are magnificent, magical, quirky, and some of the most profoundly evocative game you're likely to play. The characters are a joy to get to know, and the whole affair is topped-off with a charming, memorable soundtrack. The game is a masterpiece.

The catch being that it's only a masterpiece if you play by its rules.

The catch being that it's only a masterpiece if you play by its rules.

The way the Genocide Route is handled is stupid and undermines its own point. Sure, in theory, you have a choice with regard to which route you want to take, but if you don't do it the way you're supposed to do it, have fun playing a game so mind-numbingly dull and tedious that by the time you get to any of the story chunks, you're so worn out that it barely makes an impact on you. Have fun with a shorter, less rewarding, less fulfilling campaign. And to top it off, you're permanently stuck in a game mode in which you're no longer able to achieve the Pacifist Route.

Gee, you think we got the point, Toby?

Look, I get it, the game is trying to punish you for doing the wrong thing. But that's stupid. Why punish the player for trying to get the most out of your game, in the game that usually rewards you for exploring every nook and cranny of its world? Imagine if in Pokémon, you fill out the Pokédex, and you're arrested for animal cruelty and have to spend the rest of the game in jail. That's kind of what this is like. It's incredibly pretentious. Does Toby Fox have that little confidence in himself as a writer that he doesn't think the weight of your actions is punishment enough?

So yeah, two great games modes + one that sucks = 2/3 = 66.6%, round up to 7, and we get my score for the game.

I didn't realise how controversial Undertale was until I looked up reviews after playing it. Undertale frequently appears on top 10 lists of games you must play, so 5 years late to the game I decided to take the plunge.

If I was to sum up UT, it would be that it is quite innovative and quite irritating. I like that it thinks outside the box but it lacks consistent execution. I'll elaborate below.

UT's graphics are part of a niche in modern games that like to use retro graphics. For the purposes of the game, these graphics serve pretty well. I like the retro feel and the graphics lend themselves well to the gameplay style and humour. The downside of retro graphics is that repetition can set in quickly. UT tries to navigate this with a variety of environments with mixed success. It's saving grace is probably that it's a relatively short game although I still felt it outstayed its welcome.

The story of UT is where things become very interesting. The premise is essentially escaping an elaborate dungeon, but there are tons of eccentric and quirky characters along the way. The problem with this is that when everyone is a bit bonkers the humour and wit wear thin fairly quickly. There are parts of the game where you are constantly pestered with irrelevant monologues that started to irritate me rather interest me. The prevalence of quirky characters comes across as trying too hard, like stepping into a hipster cafe where everyone tries so hard to look different but ends up looking the same because they're all so obscure.

The gameplay of UT is where I found myself most interested. Rather than a typical turn-based approach, I liked the interactivity of moving the heart to avoid attacks. Again however, this became very irritating towards the end to the point that I didn't even finish the final two bosses as their attacks were just too cheap.

In addition to the above, UT prides itself on the alternate methods of engaging enemies, some of which can avoid battle altogether. The problem with this is you likely need a walkthrough in order to achieve non-combative play-throughs, or at least that's what I needed. In hindsight, i found the game much more enjoyable when I gave up on pacifism and just fought through everything like a normal RPG. I think that speaks volumes in itself, or just shows my own preference for violence and simplicity. Either way, this innovative approach to battle was just a bit too esoteric for my liking.

Overall, I find Undertale falls somewhere between innovative and pretentious. What shocked me more than anything was discovering the animosity between people discussing the game, What this means is that you really need to play the game for yourself and I am glad to finally know that it's just not for me. I got it on sale for lie £7 and I don't think it was really worth that much, so look out for a price drop if you want to try it, and avoid reading what anyone else says about it until you've tried it.

On the positive side, there are some very funny elements to the story and characters. I enjoy the way the battles work - very new and creative. I like the way you can do more than just constantly fight - you can talk to your opponents and even do a fully passive run if desired. The soundtrack is also really good. Negatives

Negatives for me were that it was very linear. I'm not someone who loves massive open worlds, but this all felt a bit too constricted compared to a classic like Earthbound. There was rarely any point revisiting previous areas so it just felt like you're just on one long slog to the end. I also found a lot of the puzzles quite easy which is a shame, as the concepts were good. The levelling and weapon/armour/money systems are very restrictive. Again - I wouldn't want them to be too overboard in a game like this, but they were so simplistic it hardly felt like they matter.

Overall I'm happy I bought it and spent ~6 hours playing through, but it's certainly not one that will go down as anything more than average.

Despite the fact that Undertale didn't tick all my boxes, it was still an enjoyable game. Its visuals and music brought to mind some of my most cherished memories from my formative years, and are top-notch even for games that try to evoke that retro vibe. Its narrative is tongue-in-cheek and consistantly sends surprises the player's way. The game excels at asking players to enjoy it in ways that are incongruous with the traditional way RPGs are designed. Unfortunately, those looking for a more traditional experience may feel short-changed here. The lion's share of the game's character, lore, and emotional impact is experienced by challenging yourself to play the entire game in a completely different fashion.
