The negative reviews are just people that love hating over the game that was popular in 2015.
    DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!
Undertale is a Fantastic Indie game and it's worth it on PS4 and Vita as much as it was on the PC! there's not many differences from the Original version aside from Illustration Boarders and Japanese Language option, but if you never played Undertale, i Highly Recommend

As someone who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s I absolutely adored Undertale. Full of unique and interesting characters who are complimented by hilarious dialogue; the story draws you in, allowing you to move beyond the 16 bitAs someone who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s I absolutely adored Undertale. Full of unique and interesting characters who are complimented by hilarious dialogue; the story draws you in, allowing you to move beyond the 16 bit style graphics and lose yourself in your imagination.
The art style is basic but very deliberately basic as a love letter to the golden era of gaming and classic role playing games.
The world is nostalgic and fun to explore. The combat system is unique and fun. You can either fight enemies or choose to spare them by engaging in witty dialog. When you are attacked you must control a heart (representing your soul) through a series of bullet hell, platforming, dodging senarios which get more and more insane as the game progresses.
Boss fights stand out as the most interesting and challenging parts of the game. These include battling against Doggos, Giant spiders, skeletons, Ghosts, killer robots and heroic warriors. Boss fights are made even more awesome by the fantastic individual boss theme that plays during battle. The music is simply amazing in the game and will stay with you long after you’ve completed the game.
The soundtrack adds to the depth of the game and conveys sadness, joy, fun and adventure, enhancing each scenario it is used for.
The game is around 8 hours long which leaves you wanting more, this encourages further play-trough’s to get alternative endings.
If you haven’t played Undertale yet, go play it! And see what you’re missing out on!

This is such a sweet indie work of passion. There is genuine quality and dedication put in to this game. If you don't understand this game it does not make it bad. My heroes journey through this game kept me coming back and it never grew boring or soulless. This game has a soul and if you appreciate works of art then this is for you.

As a person who heard and never played Undertale on PC yet had a PS4, I was quite happy to hear the game was coming to the console and the Vita of all things. Hearing about it's achievements and awards it was given by even the most cynical of critics made me wonder much about the world of Undertale, so I was quite excited to jump on it and give it a run through. So does it deserve praiseAs a person who heard and never played Undertale on PC yet had a PS4, I was quite happy to hear the game was coming to the console and the Vita of all things. Hearing about it's achievements and awards it was given by even the most cynical of critics made me wonder much about the world of Undertale, so I was quite excited to jump on it and give it a run through. So does it deserve praise and acclaim then? Absolutely.

There is such a love and fervor for this game's design, from the characters, the way you interact with the encounters, the fourth-wall breaking that can nail you, as the player, into a realm of humor, emotion and even guilt as every act you commit yields a consequence or effect. The music is top-notch and despite the graphics and textures being a bit lackluster, the homage to older games from the 80s and 90s really makes Undertale a game that takes a bold concept, and executes very well for what it has. Despite the praises, however, I feel the need to hammer at the game for a few things that aren't dealbreakers by any means (an 8 to me is a GREAT score, everyone deserves a chance to play this kinda of thing) but I feel hold it back some.

The characters you encounter are definitely memorable, there is no doubt in my mind of this. The issue though is everything is VERY limited when doing things with them. It allows you to have a special moment with them once and doesn't show more of their side as they develop. Having a few more hangouts and conversations could make them far more powerful. Dating a skeleton should go alot farther and that's all I gotta say for that.

The combat can be a bit unfair for newcomers. The game employs turn base RPG with bullet hell mechanics mixed to create a very interactive hybrid that gives you a bit of depth to your choices. The reason I feel it's unfair is that some attacks come so quick and have little time to react that I died quite a bit from my engagements. There is also a moderate irritation of backtracking for certain things, whether that be items, dialogue or events. I do think there should have been a smarter way of handling this without making newcomers feel the groans of running all the back for something and realize it was a waste of time. It's a shame because the game has great pacing leading up to the finale and it's spent doing side things despite the creator trying not to employ those kind of things and tell us in the game "doing something is going to be remembered". The last bit I would say that irked me (more of preference but perhaps an issue for some) is the voices. While I respect the homage to older games like Banjo and Kazooie for having goofy voiceovers instead of voice actors, Undertale's characters "voice" sounds can be grating to listen to. It feels like going silent would have been a far better move in my opinion, but if you are use to this kind of talk then it's fine.

I do not want someone to misunderstand my 8/10 score. Undertale is a GREAT game that ends (the true ending of course) on a purely powerful and emotional note that speaks deep in not just the characters I encountered on my journey, but me as a person who has played games since I was a baby. $15 dollars for this game is honestly a no brainer and I recommend this to anyone interested in bold and new takes on current genres. While it has some issues that I feel can take away the experience much to the overwhelm of critical and fan acclaim it has now for almost 2 years, I completely understand more higher scores regardless. Undertale is a funny, emotional and interesting journey that pierces through your gaming soul in very clever ways.

There isn't blazing fast robot-on-ninja-on mercenary-action, or hordes of gory zombies, but, honestly, do we need more of that? They probably just stormed through the game killing everybody they see on sight... exactly the thing the game is making a point about. This game is a meta comment on the state of today's gaming culture. Sadly the ratings here seem to exactly prove why the author wanted to make such a comment in the first place... If somebody played through the story and yet isn't in the least bit moved by it, I can't imagine what kind of person he/she must be in real life... Just horrible. If you at least have some heart then play it and you won't regret it in the slightest. The alternative perspective it provides is incredibly refreshing and touching, though you might not necessarily agree with it. If you only look for the thrills of killing some enemy and never look at the story (which to be fair many modern games just don't give a f*** about), then don't complain after playing it or come here to leave bad ratings. The low community rating is more due to the community of the game and less about the game itself. There are, however, some very nagging flaws that will inevitably hurt the game for some people so if any of the below flaws are things that bother you, Undertale may not be the game for you.

    -Bullet hell gameplay
-Very low quality graphics (although they can be endearing if you take them for what they are)
-Short run time (I actually have this as a plus, but understand why it could be a flaw to some)
-Campy writing in a lot of spots (again, another plus for me, but it can definitely rub people with a different sense of humor the wrong way.
-A lot worse when spoiled. Obviously I won't go into detail, but if you know enough about the game it loses a bit of charm and since it has been out a while, you probably know a little bit already.

Have you ever noticed how, in a typical RPG (and, now that I think about it, most games in general) battles don’t really mean anything? How many times have you defeated a miniboss, only to have it stand back up and laugh at you, saying “I have underestimated you! You are a worthy opponent! This is not the end! We shall meet again!” and make a getaway? Think about it. How many times do youHave you ever noticed how, in a typical RPG (and, now that I think about it, most games in general) battles don’t really mean anything? How many times have you defeated a miniboss, only to have it stand back up and laugh at you, saying “I have underestimated you! You are a worthy opponent! This is not the end! We shall meet again!” and make a getaway? Think about it. How many times do you beat up Balrog in Cave Story only to have him fly away without a scratch? How is Black Knight able to keep running away after Shovel Knight stabs the hell out of him? How come you black out if you lose a Pokémon battle, but none of the other trainers do? And how does the big bad villain always seem to get away, even if their HP hits zero, so they can reappear in the sequel?

Undertale asks the question, “What if defeating an enemy in battle always means that they die?”

This might seem quite inconsequential in random encounters, but Undertale will also pit you against several main characters. If you defeat a main character in battle, they’re dead for good, and the whole story changes to reflect it. Heavy stuff.

But thankfully, as the game advertises, you don’t actually have to kill anyone! The game offers a second option to get out of battles: talking the enemy out of fighting. This involves solving a simple puzzle, almost always involving the “Act” menu in battle. The puzzle changes depending on what kind of enemy you’re fighting; sometimes you’ll just need to give them a compliment, other times you’ll need to survive several of their attacks, and so on. Once they’re not emotionally invested in the battle anymore, you can “spare” them, and the battle ends. You won’t get any EXP for it, but you’ll still get gold. It’s a very unique fighting mechanic!

I admit, after my first playthrough of the game, I was disappointed in the story’s presentation. I thought that both the very beginning and the final area of the game were fantastic, dripping with shocking emotional dilemmas, but the middle 80% of the game’s content seemed like it relied too much on oddball humor and not much else. The game hilariously plays with expectations and has no shortage of genuinely witty satire of its genre, and I found myself amused by nearly all of it, but after the first two hours as I was walking across long linear worlds and listening to dozens of characters try to tell me jokes, I started to wonder where the emotional gravity had gone. “Why is this game making me laugh, when I thought it was supposed to make me cry?” I asked myself. “Where are the feelings? After such an excellent and powerful prologue, why is the game taking so long to show me more?”

Later that night, as I was lying awake in bed, the answer hit me: the game was quirky and lighthearted because I was sparing everyone’s life. I wasn’t playing as a murderer. If you want this game to have drama, you have to cause it. And I think that’s where all the hype is coming from, all the talk about player choice. This is a game about being a tree-hugging pacifist, or a murderous psychopath who kills anyone who gets in the way, or anything in between. You only need to live with whomever you decide to be, because the game won’t let you ignore what you have done.

Though it isn’t the most visually impressive game, and the stage design isn’t always the best, Undertale has left me feeling that I have just witnessed a work of art. It tried some new and ambitious things and isn’t ashamed of what it wanted to be. It's about 6 hours long; I’d recommend anyone to play it at least twice, just to be able to say that they've made their own choices and seen what the game has to offer. It’s hard to imagine that anyone would regret the experience.

Despite the fact that Undertale didn't tick all my boxes, it was still an enjoyable game. Its visuals and music brought to mind some of my most cherished memories from my formative years, and are top-notch even for games that try to evoke that retro vibe. Its narrative is tongue-in-cheek and consistantly sends surprises the player's way. The game excels at asking players to enjoy it in ways that are incongruous with the traditional way RPGs are designed. Unfortunately, those looking for a more traditional experience may feel short-changed here. The lion's share of the game's character, lore, and emotional impact is experienced by challenging yourself to play the entire game in a completely different fashion.
