I lost my interest after 3 hours, ''that was about half way though the game'' yes it's actually this short.

This is what shocked me most ''#1 Best PS4 Game of 2017''
What a joke...so it actually surpassed Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Nier, Nioh etc.??

It kind of reminds me of the overhyped ''Gone Home' another title' that got more praise than it deserved.

Boy! What an underwhelming and boring amateur load of crap; game looks like like a great game for the atari 2600 and plays like a glorified mini game. And the writing seems taken straight out of a Teletubbys episode or something. Not even that sad about wasting the money. But very upset because the hype was through the roof!

OTOH Maybe it's aimed and understood exclusively by millennials.

For what it is, though...I thought it was great. For the most part it's pretty laid back in terms of difficulty, although there were a few notable boss fights that were surprisingly challenging. There's a humour in the writing reminiscent of Earthbound, and there's actually a lot of depth to the characters and story once you get deeper into the game, especially on the second and third playthrough as you play a more merciful-or merciless-style of play. There were a few moments where I laughed out loud, and one battle in the game had my heart rate maxed out as I finally managed to beat it after about my 40th attempt.

It's a polarizing game for sure, especially if you're comparing it to AAA PS4 action/RPG or FPS games. But if you grew up playing and loving those 90's turn based RPG games, you will likely really enjoy this.

Full of unique and interesting characters who are complimented by hilarious dialogue; the story draws you in, allowing you to move beyond the 16 bit style graphics and lose yourself in your imagination.
The art style is basic but very deliberately basic as a love letter to the golden era of gaming and classic role playing games.
The world is nostalgic and fun to explore. The combat system is unique and fun. You can either fight enemies or choose to spare them by engaging in witty dialog. When you are attacked you must control a heart (representing your soul) through a series of bullet hell, platforming, dodging senarios which get more and more insane as the game progresses.
Boss fights stand out as the most interesting and challenging parts of the game. These include battling against Doggos, Giant spiders, skeletons, Ghosts, killer robots and heroic warriors. Boss fights are made even more awesome by the fantastic individual boss theme that plays during battle. The music is simply amazing in the game and will stay with you long after you’ve completed the game.
The soundtrack adds to the depth of the game and conveys sadness, joy, fun and adventure, enhancing each scenario it is used for.
The game is around 8 hours long which leaves you wanting more, this encourages further play-trough’s to get alternative endings.
If you haven’t played Undertale yet, go play it! And see what you’re missing out on!

As a person who heard and never played Undertale on PC yet had a PS4, I was quite happy to hear the game was coming to the console and the Vita of all things. Hearing about it's achievements and awards it was given by even the most cynical of critics made me wonder much about the world of Undertale, so I was quite excited to jump on it and give it a run through. So does it deserve praiseAs a person who heard and never played Undertale on PC yet had a PS4, I was quite happy to hear the game was coming to the console and the Vita of all things. Hearing about it's achievements and awards it was given by even the most cynical of critics made me wonder much about the world of Undertale, so I was quite excited to jump on it and give it a run through. So does it deserve praise and acclaim then? Absolutely.

There is such a love and fervor for this game's design, from the characters, the way you interact with the encounters, the fourth-wall breaking that can nail you, as the player, into a realm of humor, emotion and even guilt as every act you commit yields a consequence or effect. The music is top-notch and despite the graphics and textures being a bit lackluster, the homage to older games from the 80s and 90s really makes Undertale a game that takes a bold concept, and executes very well for what it has. Despite the praises, however, I feel the need to hammer at the game for a few things that aren't dealbreakers by any means (an 8 to me is a GREAT score, everyone deserves a chance to play this kinda of thing) but I feel hold it back some.

The characters you encounter are definitely memorable, there is no doubt in my mind of this. The issue though is everything is VERY limited when doing things with them. It allows you to have a special moment with them once and doesn't show more of their side as they develop. Having a few more hangouts and conversations could make them far more powerful. Dating a skeleton should go alot farther and that's all I gotta say for that.

The combat can be a bit unfair for newcomers. The game employs turn base RPG with bullet hell mechanics mixed to create a very interactive hybrid that gives you a bit of depth to your choices. The reason I feel it's unfair is that some attacks come so quick and have little time to react that I died quite a bit from my engagements. There is also a moderate irritation of backtracking for certain things, whether that be items, dialogue or events. I do think there should have been a smarter way of handling this without making newcomers feel the groans of running all the back for something and realize it was a waste of time. It's a shame because the game has great pacing leading up to the finale and it's spent doing side things despite the creator trying not to employ those kind of things and tell us in the game "doing something is going to be remembered". The last bit I would say that irked me (more of preference but perhaps an issue for some) is the voices. While I respect the homage to older games like Banjo and Kazooie for having goofy voiceovers instead of voice actors, Undertale's characters "voice" sounds can be grating to listen to. It feels like going silent would have been a far better move in my opinion, but if you are use to this kind of talk then it's fine.

I do not want someone to misunderstand my 8/10 score. Undertale is a GREAT game that ends (the true ending of course) on a purely powerful and emotional note that speaks deep in not just the characters I encountered on my journey, but me as a person who has played games since I was a baby. $15 dollars for this game is honestly a no brainer and I recommend this to anyone interested in bold and new takes on current genres. While it has some issues that I feel can take away the experience much to the overwhelm of critical and fan acclaim it has now for almost 2 years, I completely understand more higher scores regardless. Undertale is a funny, emotional and interesting journey that pierces through your gaming soul in very clever ways.

They probably just stormed through the game killing everybody they see on sight... exactly the thing the game is making a point about. This game is a meta comment on the state of today's gaming culture. Sadly the ratings here seem to exactly prove why the author wanted to make such a comment in the first place... If somebody played through the story and yet isn't in the least bit moved by it, I can't imagine what kind of person he/she must be in real life... Just horrible. If you at least have some heart then play it and you won't regret it in the slightest. The alternative perspective it provides is incredibly refreshing and touching, though you might not necessarily agree with it. Undertale also has some of the best chiptune music to really give it an interesting feel. If you haven't played Undertale just yet, I highly recommend that you give it a try.

The low community rating is more due to the community of the game and less about the game itself. There are, however, some very nagging flaws that will inevitably hurt the game for some people so if any of the below flaws are things that bother you, Undertale may not be the game for you.

    -Bullet hell gameplay
-Very low quality graphics (although they can be endearing if you take them for what they are)
-Short run time (I actually have this as a plus, but understand why it could be a flaw to some)
-Campy writing in a lot of spots (again, another plus for me, but it can definitely rub people with a different sense of humor the wrong way.
-A lot worse when spoiled. Obviously I won't go into detail, but if you know enough about the game it loses a bit of charm and since it has been out a while, you probably know a little bit already.

    Hope this helps.

Have you ever noticed how, in a typical RPG (and, now that I think about it, most games in general) battles don’t really mean anything? How many times have you defeated a miniboss, only to have it stand back up and laugh at you, saying “I have underestimated you! You are a worthy opponent! This is not the end! We shall meet again!” and make a getaway? Think about it. How many times do youHave you ever noticed how, in a typical RPG (and, now that I think about it, most games in general) battles don’t really mean anything? How many times have you defeated a miniboss, only to have it stand back up and laugh at you, saying “I have underestimated you! You are a worthy opponent! This is not the end! We shall meet again!” and make a getaway? Think about it. How many times do you beat up Balrog in Cave Story only to have him fly away without a scratch? How is Black Knight able to keep running away after Shovel Knight stabs the hell out of him? How come you black out if you lose a Pokémon battle, but none of the other trainers do? And how does the big bad villain always seem to get away, even if their HP hits zero, so they can reappear in the sequel?

Undertale asks the question, “What if defeating an enemy in battle always means that they die?”

This might seem quite inconsequential in random encounters, but Undertale will also pit you against several main characters. If you defeat a main character in battle, they’re dead for good, and the whole story changes to reflect it. Heavy stuff.

But thankfully, as the game advertises, you don’t actually have to kill anyone! The game offers a second option to get out of battles: talking the enemy out of fighting. This involves solving a simple puzzle, almost always involving the “Act” menu in battle. The puzzle changes depending on what kind of enemy you’re fighting; sometimes you’ll just need to give them a compliment, other times you’ll need to survive several of their attacks, and so on. Once they’re not emotionally invested in the battle anymore, you can “spare” them, and the battle ends. You won’t get any EXP for it, but you’ll still get gold. It’s a very unique fighting mechanic!

I admit, after my first playthrough of the game, I was disappointed in the story’s presentation. I thought that both the very beginning and the final area of the game were fantastic, dripping with shocking emotional dilemmas, but the middle 80% of the game’s content seemed like it relied too much on oddball humor and not much else. The game hilariously plays with expectations and has no shortage of genuinely witty satire of its genre, and I found myself amused by nearly all of it, but after the first two hours as I was walking across long linear worlds and listening to dozens of characters try to tell me jokes, I started to wonder where the emotional gravity had gone. “Why is this game making me laugh, when I thought it was supposed to make me cry?” I asked myself. “Where are the feelings? After such an excellent and powerful prologue, why is the game taking so long to show me more?”

Later that night, as I was lying awake in bed, the answer hit me: the game was quirky and lighthearted because I was sparing everyone’s life. I wasn’t playing as a murderer. If you want this game to have drama, you have to cause it. And I think that’s where all the hype is coming from, all the talk about player choice. This is a game about being a tree-hugging pacifist, or a murderous psychopath who kills anyone who gets in the way, or anything in between. You only need to live with whomever you decide to be, because the game won’t let you ignore what you have done.

Though it isn’t the most visually impressive game, and the stage design isn’t always the best, Undertale has left me feeling that I have just witnessed a work of art. It tried some new and ambitious things and isn’t ashamed of what it wanted to be. It's about 6 hours long; I’d recommend anyone to play it at least twice, just to be able to say that they've made their own choices and seen what the game has to offer. It’s hard to imagine that anyone would regret the experience.

Undertale is more than just a indie retro-RPG game. Undertale is not about exploration, nice pixel art ou epic combat moments (the boss fights are great btw), Undertale is about characters and the impact of your actions in the setting. If you want a game to get involved with the story and characters, Undertale is the game for you, but if you want sometihing more superficial this is not for you

Undertale does this bizzare and rare thing when you actually like the characters. The game is filled with humour and charm. The soundtrack is AMAZING. The songs are extremely catchy and good. I am not the biggest fan of turnbased combat, but undertale's combat is so different and fun.
    The fandom is cancer...

This game takes even the concept of gaming itself and flips it on it's head. Reaching out the screen to question you as a gamer and why you do what you do. The combat is not focused on typical RPG strategy, but more on the bullet hell action and thinking outside the box. (sometimes literally!)
The music on the surface has a 90's SNES flair, but with a more built feel. Like remastered SNES music. After you finish the game, you could hear the tracks again and immediately feel the emotions again. The music can be fun and silly, epic and powerful, and even sad or somber.
The graphics and UI are very reminiscent of Earthbound. The pixel art is deliberately dated looking, but passionately conceptualized.
This game is not your mainstream RPG and it's not your dad's RPG. However it can appeal to all kinds of gamers. The hardcore crowd looking for over the top action won't find that here. This game can get intense, but it is by no means an "action" game.
It's hard to put into words how unique and lovable this game is, but I recommend it to anyone. Try it for sure, but just know that the further you play, the more you realize what is REALLY going on here. I I guarantee you would love it as much as I have!
Don't listen to these negative reviewers. They only followed the hype and it sounds like they did not understand what this was at all. It sounds like they just went in for combat and not using any of the nuances to progress. They were looking for something that they expected and didn't get. They are hating it for the game's intended features. Like going to an Italian restaurant when you hate tomato sauce.
If you are looking for a lovable JRPG with a deliberate retro style and love for the JRPG, then you are in the right place. If you are looking for Skyrim, Final Fantasy XV, or Witcher III, then you are in the WRONG place.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. On September 15 2015 the hit indie sensation “Undertale” was released by Toby Fox onto the PC platform “Steam” where it quickly grew in popularity and fandom. However by April 2016 the game seemed to have died out in popularity. Today people will tell you the game is complete garbage. But how good was the game? To answer I played through the game 3 times (one for each route) to see just how good or bad this game really is.

When I first started the game I thought the lore was interesting: a world where humans and monsters once lived together but where the monsters were banished after a war in which the opposing kings lost their sons. I was intrigued by the art style chosen, an 8-bit sprite overworld, and during the dialogue and battle sequences a much more detailed (albeit still 8-bit) sprite, which looks absolutely gorgeous when animated. The tutorial is a bit bland, but the game kicks into high gear when the first boss fight (against the tutorial character conveniently named Toriel) If you kill her, you can go for one of 3 paths. The genocide route: the hardest path (It took me 1 hr and 23 mins to kill the final boss “Sans”) in which you kill every single monster programmed into the game. In Undertale unlike other games like pokemon, there are a finite number of monsters to kill. There is also a “Neutral” path, where players can kill as they please unlocking a different ending depending on the people they kill. And if you spare Toriel you can try for a pacifist route in which you don’t kill ANYTHING. If you beat the game in this fashion, you unlock a happy ending filled with all the monsters enjoying the sunshine for the first time in hundreds of years.

Usually I despise monotonous 8-bit video game music, but I loved the Undertale soundtrack, it is mostly a fusion of 8-bit and other real forms of music like bebop, rock, and classical. It compliments the aesthetic perfectly and opts you to capture the moment of the game and just listen for a bit. The only thing I really didn’t like about this game is what remains of the fandom. The fandom of most things is bad enough, but Undertale takes the case with bad fan art and OC’s. If you say ANYTHING bad about the game like “I think the overworld art could have been done a lot better”. They will swarm you like wasps telling you how Undertale is a masterpiece and could do no wrong. Although this is honestly all I could come up with that was negative about this game.
In all honesty the reason this game is no longer popular is because the fandom killed it. Butt I believe if the fandom wasn’t so bad, it would be held as a classic. I have to give the game 8 stars out of 10. The stunning visuals, and great gameplay, coupled with a stellar soundtrack, and astounding story. However the fandom keeps this game from the 10/10 it truly deserves.

If you're a heinous bore, procrastinating on your postgraduate thesis, this game is aptly suited to accept the self-satisfied word salad you call an opinion.

But it's easy to get distracted by the insufferable audience of a work, and that's not being fair. I actually do see value in subverting conventions: having the consequences of killing a character dog you even when you've reloaded a previous save, and the range of aggressive or pacifist actions you can take, offer some interesting perspective on the kinds of worlds that most games portray (where violent catharsis is the sole solution).

I don't care much about any nostalgic element to the presentation, but I like that it's too low res for the disgusting anime styles of modern RPGs to be rendered, that there's no awful voice acting.

The character development presented a satisfying enough blend of motivations and conflicts (though the game does get up its own ass a bit in this regard), and seeing the conflicted motives of the "enemies" play out in real time, within the battle mechanic was kind of neat.

    That mechanic, though...

There are worthwhile experiments, and there are genuinely enjoyable experiences, and the primary mechanic for winning battles in this game makes it one of the former.

I have to admit my expectations for Undertale were maybe too high. I did like the game, but didn't find it that special. It's a good game that owes a lot to its soundtrack.

Best ps4 game for 2017? Are you freaking kidding me? Totally lost my faith in game reviews. Games like these should be hyped by users, not critics. I still can't believe my eyes ((

I was very disappointed by the PS4 port. I know it's made in RPG Maker and runs in 20fps. That's fine. But why did they have to compress the audio so it sounds like ****. The music is perhaps the best element in this game and it's ruined by horrible lossy compression (It sounds great on PC). PS4 Port sucks, if you really want it, get it on PC instead.

Okay...I'm just surprised to see this game on ps4 because, in all honesty, this game is just overhyped to extreme levels and really, the only appeal of this game is the fan service for the creator and that's it: the characters have personalities of a cardboard and killing someone by mistake is just a long streak of guilt trip, which is the cheapest and most heartless way to make someoneOkay...I'm just surprised to see this game on ps4 because, in all honesty, this game is just overhyped to extreme levels and really, the only appeal of this game is the fan service for the creator and that's it: the characters have personalities of a cardboard and killing someone by mistake is just a long streak of guilt trip, which is the cheapest and most heartless way to make someone feel bad. The writing is okay but it's not really the best: it's too cheesy and gets boring after a while, which is what people praise the most but I've seen better.
At least it's no Final Fantasy level of crappy writing so it's definitely a plus.

With that said, I expected this version to give more in terms of content: the original game is very short, clocking only around 6-7 hours unless you go for the other routes, but for what I've seen, it's the same exact game that you had on pc...so why would you buy it again if not for wasting money? Even a laptop could run this thing so the only reason I could recommend this game on ps4, it's because you don't own a computer!

On top of that you could potentially get it cheaper on steam during sales, and while it's not expensive, the steam version is 5 bucks cheaper than the psn version. Again why bother?

I really can't say much because this version is quite literally the same as the pc version, and the same **** there is applied here.. so yeah, just read pc reviews. I might be lazy but hey, so is this port!

And one more thing: if anyone really praises this game "because you killing is unnecessary" **** that everyone praise this game about...go play Deus Ex or the Thief games (or Dishonored too).
    Nuff said.

    PS: music's good at least.

I was expecting this release because i didn't play it on pc. I can say that for me this game was a big disappointment, yes the music is good, and the combat is sometimes fun, but the game was extremely boring and annoying, also, i was expecting an incredible story, but no. At least, the are some good characters, but only that.

Random Encounters. If you don't like random encounters you will hate this game. I don't like random encounters....I hate random encounters. I hate repetitive, never ending random encounters. So I find this game unplayable, because I'm always doing random encounters.
Oh and I think you'd have to hate comedy in order to think this game is funny. it isn't.

Undertale is one of those over-rated Indie games like Five Nights At Freddy’s. The game is very bland and was made with RPG Maker! Undertale has only story going for it and offers no gameplay whatsoever.

    Undertale is a satisfying game.
BUT. Dear gaming journalists. Yes. You are the abnormality here, not the game itself.
I'll just say that Undertale's creators, or their girlfriends, must give the most amazing head ever. I'll just say that making "satirical" 2D games in 2010s must have become the most profitable business right now. You make a game that costs 1/1000 of the money, 1/100 of

I'll just say that making "satirical" 2D games in 2010s must have become the most profitable business right now.
You make a game that costs 1/1000 of the money, 1/100 of the effort, and a tenth of the creativity of the top tier games, and you sell it for like a third or half the price of those games.
I'll just say that, if head-giving becomes big in gaming journalism, in 10 years time we won't even have groundbreaking 3D games anymore. We'll just have "satirical", try-hard-as-hell 8 bit games.

Personally, I didn't enjoy Undertale. I found its humor not intelligent, not even honest and chill, but only try-hardish as hell. But I understand how some people might enjoy it. It's not a bad game/comedy artwork. My only critique is against the head-giving.

But I ignored it at first, because from the comments I saw in the community the rest of the game seemed to be incredible, but it's all the same crap.

I'm going to give it a 0 because that's what it deserves. If this thing becomes a trend in the gaming industry we all will be ****

The story is okay , the gameplay is something fresh but too repetitive and boring with time.

But it is a little too dark, the fun loving and child like aesthetic deceive you into this rather creepy game. I found myself unwilling to begin playing, but as I did, it didn't seem that bad. That's because it depends on how you play the game, it encourages you to not kill anything, so unassuming old me did exactly what Toriel instructed me to do. I played the game again after experiencing the true lab, only to find out what happens when you actively kill everything. It kept me up at night. you can call me a woos but I wasn't going anywhere near that game, I don't do horror usually, so it was the same kind of shock I would get reading a creepy pasta. There are some very eerie undertones to Undertale, so keep that in mind when you, or your five year old decide to give it a go Expand

This is not 1992, we have games like persona 5 now. If you are going to make a stripped down 2d game that's fine, but let's review them for what they are today compared to what else is out today. Why review something like you are living 25 years ago?
This game plays and looks like something out of 1992, in any other genre a game that looked this bad would get a 2 as well, so here you go.

Don't get me wrong - The Pacifist Route and Neutral Routes of Undertale are magnificent, magical, quirky, and some of the most profoundly evocative game you're likely to play. The characters are a joy to get to know, and the whole affair is topped-off with a charming, memorable soundtrack. The game is a masterpiece.

The catch being that it's only a masterpiece if you play by its rules.

The way the Genocide Route is handled is stupid and undermines its own point. Sure, in theory, you have a choice with regard to which route you want to take, but if you don't do it the way you're supposed to do it, have fun playing a game so mind-numbingly dull and tedious that by the time you get to any of the story chunks, you're so worn out that it barely makes an impact on you. Have fun with a shorter, less rewarding, less fulfilling campaign. And to top it off, you're permanently stuck in a game mode in which you're no longer able to achieve the Pacifist Route.

Gee, you think we got the point, Toby?

Look, I get it, the game is trying to punish you for doing the wrong thing. But that's stupid. Why punish the player for trying to get the most out of your game, in the game that usually rewards you for exploring every nook and cranny of its world? Imagine if in Pokémon, you fill out the Pokédex, and you're arrested for animal cruelty and have to spend the rest of the game in jail. That's kind of what this is like. It's incredibly pretentious. Does Toby Fox have that little confidence in himself as a writer that he doesn't think the weight of your actions is punishment enough?

So yeah, two great games modes + one that sucks = 2/3 = 66.6%, round up to 7, and we get my score for the game.

Despite the fact that Undertale didn't tick all my boxes, it was still an enjoyable game. Its visuals and music brought to mind some of my most cherished memories from my formative years, and are top-notch even for games that try to evoke that retro vibe. Its narrative is tongue-in-cheek and consistantly sends surprises the player's way. The game excels at asking players to enjoy it in ways that are incongruous with the traditional way RPGs are designed. Unfortunately, those looking for a more traditional experience may feel short-changed here. The lion's share of the game's character, lore, and emotional impact is experienced by challenging yourself to play the entire game in a completely different fashion.
