Given the sparse available reviews for this game available, I thought I'd leave a review for it in the hopes of providing insight prior to purchase. I, myself, took the leap at the full RRP of £44.99. Do I regret it? I don't think I do, no, but it's not a confident no - let me explain.

If you've watched any game play videos or reviews on YouTube of this game, you'll likely know what to expect. It's unapologetically the video game equivalent of a B-movie.

Something that I was pleasantly suprirsed with were the graphics. All prior reviews I'd read had compared them to those seen in the PS2-era, and whilst most of the enviroments are fairly drab and feel completely unorganic, the characters are nicely rendered and the main cast all are accurately recreated with care.

The gameplay itself is you standard Bandai-Namco anime/game tie in - think Dynasty Warriors - that has its own endearing charm. It's not a gameplay loop that you'll want to, or be able to dedicate endless hours on due to the repetitive nature and whilst the mobs are easily dispatched fodder, the bosses are often suprisingly difficult and can become very quickly lethal if not given full attention.

The music and soundtrack in the game is great, however the cutscenes in game are simple images providing a visual backdrop alongside the dialogue to aid in disgesting the story. This certainly is NOT the best way to experience the story for anyone who's had the pleasure to experience the manga (and to a lesser extent the anime) but it does a servicable job to include the bare essentials necessary to providing context to the chaos.

The character creator is as bad as you've heard it is AT FIRST, but there is plenty to unlock, including multiple weapons, firearms, outfits, hairstyles and more, aswell as having a perk system that allows you to unlock perks (e.g, +25 damage, +10% health) and assign them to your weapons to give the entire creation system a measure of depth.

The multiplayer is active, however its a rather shallow affair and should not be a major factor in your decision to purchase.

Overall, it's 7/10 game and definitely one for the fans of the series. It has just enough charm and character in its gameplay mechanics and storyline to warrant a purchase, but it's worth waiting for a sale to avoid disappointment. £20-£25 feels about right for this game and providing one approaches it knowing that it's definately not a AAA title, some fun and enjoyment can be had with it, much akin to Dynasty Warriors, Attack On Titan (Wings of Freedom/2) and Berserk the game.

Tokyo Ghoul:re [Call To Exist] is the rare anime cash-in that is both ambitious and chocked full of content, and one that franchise diehards can eagerly sink their teeth into and be able to take a deep, stiff drink from.

The controls seem pretty stiff and gameplay gets repetitive fast. It has everything a brawler normally has but doesn’t bring anything unique to set itself apart.

Tokyo Ghoul: re [Call to Exist] has some good stuff going for it: popular source material, well-designed (if uninspired) combat. But after a couple hours in, the shine of the game disappears and gives way to a repetitive and thin experience. With its steep price tag, it’s only a game for fans, and even the most hardcore might find that Ghoul simply lacks the spirit.
