The story line is generous unlike anything I have played before. What really blew me away is the fact that secondary and optional story missions feel like main missions in any other game. Some of these missions are also creepy in awesome and new ways that left me thinking about the characters. While I could have given this game a perfect score, I didn’t as it has it main share of issues. The worst of which is that I lost over 10hrs of gameplay due to a buggy save system that at times refused do automatic and manual saves; the game also has a really wonky camera at times, and you find yourself with Geralt facing the enemies while the camera is looking somewhere else; the character movement is odd also… Geralt moves at a pace that is difficult to control… As if he’s always walking with a momentum equal to running downhill. Roach, Geralt’s horse, is useless sometimes as you have to be perfectly aligned to mount it (I wish the mount behaved similar to the ones in Dragon Age). Oh… and for some odd reason, there is always a light or candle in the middle of NPCs, chests, Roach, loot bags, etc., meaning that if you attempt to interact with any of the later, Geralt ends up lighting candles.
Anyway, aside from the technical issues, this is a great gaming experience and probably the best RPG I’ve ever played (sorry, Mass Effect).

It doesn't matter how small the character is. The side quests are just as good as the main quests. Generally I find myself bored with side quests in games because they feel like mundane fetch quests or have weak stories. In the Witcher 3 each side quest will make you feel invested in the story and give you something fun to do on the way. My fiance wants me to play this game all day so she can watch the amazing story unfold. The writing is good and only sometimes you'll find yourself off put by the dialogue. The choices you can make in the game feel like they have weight to them. The soundtrack is beautiful, scary, and just downright chilling. The music is seriously too good. The physical copy came with the soundtrack on disc and I love it. There is just too much to say about this game. It is a game that takes you to a new world. It makes you want to be there. You feel like Geralt, a monster hunting, mutated, sexy, cunning, bad ass mother ******.

There are a few bugs with in the game, but nothing that kills the experience and CD Projekt Red works hard to fix them.

This game is a must buy. I am really picky about giving perfect scores, but this is a near perfect game. A+

I have to say never before have i felt my choices have had meaning and true consequence far more then say....mass effect series. the witcher has really grown up with this growing maturing studio i just hope it isnt as rumoured the last in the series.

Despite all the excellent on offer a couple of things could stand to improve, the inventory system can be a little messy and quest items can sometime be lost in a sea of useless rubbish especially when it comes to the treasure and armour scavenger hunts.

In summary the game is a true masterpiece and even the minor inventory niggles cannot detract from what is truly the bench mark for all rpg's to follow.

The only thing I feel is missing is joining factions, groups, fighter's guildetc. However, The Witcher makes up for this and any other shortcomings (occasional frame rate issues, bugs) with its amazing story and smooth and fluid gameplay. Also, the Gwent card game is addicting.

I absolutely love running through Novigrad. My main criticism, as partially described above, is that I do not feel as close to or a part of the NPC's. Don't get me wrong, the character design is astonishing and you grow to like the characters. I guess the fact that The Witcher is more of an independent protagonist trying to find lost loved ones rather than trying to save the world separates Geralt from the world surrounding him.

Something else I love about this game are the boss fights and the enemy design. It goes right up there with Dragon's Dogma.

This is one of the best RPG I've ever played. Definitely rivals Skyrim, FFVII, and Phantasy Star IV.

As usual there are a host of ludicrous reviews by people who are not gamers and are too stupid to understand a 0-10 scoring system; like do they realise a 0/10 would be a game that did not even load up? A particularly pathetic 'review' comes from hb1209, read if you want a laugh. Good -

Good - Beautiful and huge game world, unlike games like Red Dead or GTAV there is plenty to do in it as well. The story is excellent and even without playing previous Witcher games will keep you hooked. The voice acting is also superb compared to most other games and is up there in quality with the likes of Mass Effect series. Finally, finally you are now able to customize Geralt a bit. Gameplay is good enough to facilitate your journey through the game.

Bad - Levelled armor; in any game ever made, is just annoying, games should follow Skyrim and Souls and just let players wear anything, it just works better. Also, no RPG should have armor that is unobtainable; once again, much like FF games, the antagonists wear cooler armor than can ever be obtained by the player, a crazy design decision by the devs. The reason I lasted an hour on the Witcher 2 was because I couldn't customize the player character; now I can which is a huge plus but it would be better if players had the option of designing their own character from scratch.

Verdict - If you enjoy the games I have mentioned, Skyrim and Dragon Age especially, you will enjoy this game also. The lack of character creation takes away from the RPG element but doesn't ruin the game. 8/10.

The best story I've ever seen in a game and it rivals even Lord of the Rings for books and movies. It has amazing graphics, and continues to impress as you crank it to 1600p and ultra everything.

The most innovative and intriguing thing about the game is that decisions you make matter (without a simple good/evil bar), and often you will not know the extent of your decisions for hours or even tens of hours (none of this "so and so will remember that" from Telltale games and none of the simple and obvious good/bad choices of almost every other game ever.

It also has fantastic setting and lore, which pays lots of fan service to Witcher 2 fans (like me) but is absolutely accessible to people who never played either other game (like my wife). Finally, it is just plain ridiculously fun and never got old even after 135 hours.

Yes, it is a bit clunky to control (but only out of combat), the swimming is atrociously bad, the inventory cannot be sorted, and some other minor issues as well. But when you absolutely nail every other part of your game, it just doesn't matter.

I will even go as far to say this is the best RPG I have ever played in quite a long time, cons about the game, some of the game mechanics could use a little work such is the way your character is able to move around, game mechanics could also use a little work in the way you are able to maneuver your horse. replay value on this game would definitely get a nine and a half because of how many times you can make the story end after you beat the game differently. so to sum up what I think of this game, if demons souls in fable had a baby, it would have been the Elder Scrolls, now if the Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age had a baby, it would definitely be the Witcher 3, that is how good this game ends, I highly recommend picking this game up, and enjoy. Beautiful, but broken.
The Witcher 3 starts out perfect
You’re introduced to a massive would where massive creatures roam and make their claims on territories.
There’s a sense of fear and challenge in this aspect alone.
As you travel the land of white orchard you hear people call out for help and you stop to speak with them and help them with their problems for some coin.
Even the tiniest thing such as helping an old woman get her frying pan back feels immersive and draws you into the world.
This is where you’re introduced to the idea of oils and potions, finding enemies weaknesses, using your witcher senses to find clue about what youre about to face, and preparing for fights, something that comes in handy for harder difficulties.
I feel like this was the vision.
White Orchard would be what the witcher 3 was all about, and then the game kinda just falls apart and its vision fades.
The witcher tells a beautiful story of urgency, and for that reason alone, the side quests and question marks that clutter the map in velen and other locations make no sense to exist in the context of the games story.
Geralt needs to get to the bottom of what happened, why would he waste his time with the problems of randoms and destroying monster nests.
There are some great side quests that actually tie in to the story, and they are beautiful and fun quests but the ones there just to attempt and make the world feel alive ultimately feel like pointless grinding.
Many times I found myself just skipping through the cut scenes of these quests.
This could have been fixed with incentive more than coin, such as weapons and armors like treasure hunts offer.
The witcher contracts should have been mandatory obstacles in your way of story progression.
These type of things make sense in a Skyrim type game where you write your own story, but in the witcher 3, the story is already established... you aren’t an adventurer.
    You’re a rescuer.
But as a rescuer there is tons to do to level up so you can take on the challenges that await you.
Again contracts and sidequests could have used this idea for benefit, making them feel like training instead of just a job.
You can set out in the world to clear up abandoned sites to repopulate them, you can go out to take down beasts terrorizing territories or just go out and fight random creatures blocking your way to a new undiscovered location.
And the combat is satisfying, so fighting enemies never feels like a drag.
You can block, parry, roll, dodge, heavy attack, fast attack, shoot at them with arrows, use any of the magic signs to shoot fire from your fingers, use a protective spell, magic traps, knock enemies back, control their minds, so much opportunity and combos that can be played with.
And while defeating creatures doesn’t grant much xp, they are still worth the fight as enemies drop items for upgrades, crafting, and alchemy.
The crafting in this game really is some of the best I’ve seen.
You can dismantle objects for items you need to craft base items for main items, it may feel overwhelming at first, but once you really dive in, it’s clever and worthwhile to figure out.
You can purchase items from shops and alchemists or you can explore the beautiful world that The Witcher 3 offers.
When you do level up, you can use the skill points in a vast skill tree and choose the perks you want to use, with up to 12 free slots for these perks. This skill tree can be wrapped around your personal play style or the style you need to take down a specific enemy as there are potions to reset your perks so you can respend them.
I’m a very aggressive player so I for the most part focused on combat skills rather than alchemy or magic.
There are also races you can do, but your horse annoyingly gets caught up on nothing and will randomly just stop which can lead to frustration.
And now my favorite part of the game. Gwent.
Gwent is a mini game within the game and im not ashamed to say that I liked gwent more than witcher 3 itself.
Gwent is a very addictive game with massive marketing potential, so get to making the app CD Projekt red.
    Now for the bad,
for starters leveling up in the witcher 3 is a complete drag, not only does it feel unsatisfying to slay hordes of creatures, the games design actually discourages it.
If you dare level grind like you’re supposed to in an rpg rather than stick to the main story, you’re punished for it by earning 0xp if you’re 6 levels or more above the suggested level for that mission.
Not only does it discourage you from going on your own wild hunt, but it makes you look at side quests and blow them off, why waste your time and effort?
The game also has many stability issues
I lost count of the game crashes at 10, this was only in my first few days of playing the game, with and without game patches.
The Witcher 3 makes the mistake of not constantly saving when you stumble on new locations or accomplish something tiny like a gwent win, causing you to have to re-do 10-30 minutes if the game crashes, gwent cards being random for wins adds salt to the wounds, as if the game crashes after a win, you’ll more than likely not get that card again that you were so excited to win.
I also ran into head floating glitches that really just destroyed the world and its immersion, and there was absolutely no polish or attention to detail put into cut scenes where it should be most.
Sure I expect items to ghost through objects in game, but in cut scene, it’s unacceptable.
Not only are there game crashing bugs in this massive open world, but there are missables which is complete bs.
Making a 200 hour long game and putting content in there such as side quests and collectibles and making them missable if you don’t drop the world to do them now is massively disrespectful to players and their time.
At the very least put asterisk around missable quests so we know to prioritize them, so we don’t get lost in your story, heaven forbid…and have to replay a 200 hour game again to see content we feel robbed of, or better yet don’t make them missable at all, which leads me to achievements and more bs.
The witcher 3 is all about choices, that being said it’s shady as heck to put in achievements that force you to make certain decisions, really lessoning the games experience having to try to spin a web around a mid-game ding.
I know you don’t have to trophy hunt, , but that isn’t an excuse to disrespect a players experience by forcing those that do trophy hunt to play by your rules… that contradicts the entire premise of the witcher 3 as a game.
While I was massively impressed by my first 10 hours of the witcher 3, there are too many flaws in game design for me to overlook.
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a gorgeous and intensely immerse game with thought provoking story telling, over 30 different endings you can get and hundreds of hours of content.
    For what it is.

I was disappointed wit DA:I and needed a really good RPG to play on the PS4 and I have to say this is fantastic! The Deep story telling and the fact that the side quests are well voice acted and enjoyable to do is truly exceptional. Combat in the game is fluid and you need to employ different tactics to beat some bosses, it certainly isn't a button mashing game to get you through.

There are some performance issues, frames do drop below 30fps. There is some pop-in on textures but it hasn't spoilt my experience. Hopefully in a few patches these will get ironed out.

I recommend this game to any RPG fan out there, I've never played the Witcher series before and you don't need to know how the previous 2 games went, but IGNs 5 min preview video was a good base.

Anyone who says that W3 doesn't run well on their system is high. I'm using a 2600CPU and a 570VidCard and I get 60+FPS on Ultra settings (minus hair). The story line is superb, the graphics are cinema quality, and the combat system and immersion are top notch. This game really sets a new standard. I'm having a blast with it and I don't have a single complaint.

Wonderful game, the more i played the game the more i feel the deep of the game story. I never get into an RPG game so much, but The Witcher 3 make me stay to play more than an hours, only to find an ingredients for crafting.

But what i'm concern is, the action camera. Feels awkward.

I bought this for myself as a birthday present. Thought I couldn't go wrong with all the hype. Turns out I'm severely disappointed. Firs,t controls are a sham. Next graphics are average nothing near the hype. DA Inquisition graphics/gameplay were far superior. Characters seem unnatural as if jerky. Fighting is terrible. A complete waste of good money. The hype that this is better than Skyrim is rubbish & utter nonsense. Skyrim kills this game easily. Too linear and scripted. I thought this was next generation goodness. Again wrong. Very sorry I bought it. Don't listen to the hype. Menus ugh!!! Can't read the fonts on my 50" TV. Terrible programming. Expand

We can all accept that there is a good dose of subjectivity involved in judging a game, whether due to its genre (which we might not like or understand), or due to the extent to which it excels (or not) in the things that we personally consider most important (graphics, game-play, story, combat mechanism, controls etc), or, in the case of sequels, due to the extent to which it continues orWe can all accept that there is a good dose of subjectivity involved in judging a game, whether due to its genre (which we might not like or understand), or due to the extent to which it excels (or not) in the things that we personally consider most important (graphics, game-play, story, combat mechanism, controls etc), or, in the case of sequels, due to the extent to which it continues or diverges from the earlier games.

Still, there is also arguably a point where a score simply becomes not an evaluation of the game, but essentially an expression of a purely personal preference. For example, one might not enjoy the music of Beethoven or Queen, it might leave you entirely cold, but it is difficult to see how one could legitimately award the Fifth Symphony or Bohemian Rhapsody a 0/10. Unless, that is, one was simply using 0/10 to say ‘I personally don’t like this’ - but, the point of a review, shared with others, is that it should probably be saying something more than ‘I like this’ or ‘I don’t like this’.

So, while I can see - and understand from comments - why users might rate the Witcher 3 anywhere between 7/10 and 10/10, it is extremely difficult to see how, objectively, one can attribute a 0/10, 1/10 or 2/10 (as some have); this is basically proposing that the Witcher 3 is very significantly worse than, say, Duke Nukem on last generation.

    Consider the various parameters:

Graphics: in general, these are clearly up there with the best, particularly the attention to detail (whether the clouds rolling-in as part of the dynamic weather, or the goose flapping its wings and moving out of the way as you walk through a village). There are some issues with frame-rate and clipping (on console versions), but difficult to put this parameter below around 8/10 given the scope of what has been achieved in relatively early-era next-gen hardware.

Sound/voice-acting: often over-looked, but the voice-acting is pretty impressive, with a range of accents, genuinely differentiated attitudes, and a rounded characterisation of even relatively secondary characters (e.g. the old woman in the ‘frying-pan’ side-quest). Geralt himself, admittedly, might perhaps be a little to flat for some, but again difficult to put this parameter below around 8/10.

Decision-making/choice: far more than Skyrim, Infamous or Dragon Age etc, even simple side-quests can involve multiple options, with subsequent repercussion, but without presenting an obvious ‘good or bad’ choice (e.g. the ‘precious cargo’ side-quest). Hard to see less than 7/10 or 8/10 for this aspect.

Combat: yes, this will divide more. For those used to the more diverse array of routes available in a standard RPG - Skyrim, Dragon Age, Dragon’s Dogma - the ‘two swords’ plus a limited range of magical options will frustrate some. You cannot build a true ‘mage’ character for example - but, then again, this derives from the lore of the game. It’s a little like God of War combat in an open-world RPG setting, so one can appreciate why it could potentially alienate both camps. Similarly, lock-on and camera can be an issue in combat situations, and combat can, on average difficulty settings, devolve to ‘drink potion, apply oil, block, hack, block, hack etc’. I can see why aficionados could, in theory, go as low as 6/10 or 7/10 for this element.

Customisation/Levelling etc: This will appear limited to some. It takes longer than in most games to increase level (especially for earlier level-ups - though this is partly mitigated by the ‘places of power’ option); and many of the upgrades are rather boring ‘increase this factor/attribute by 5%’ etc.

Alchemy/Upgrades: Alchemy is more complex than in many similar games (requiring one to create ‘sub’-ingredients even before one can then craft - though this is partly mitigated by the ‘once learnt, replenish via alcohol’ mechanism). Conversely, weapon and armour upgrading is pretty limited, especially compared to, say, DA Inquisition.

One could go on… But, even the harshest critic, who saw each of the above in the most negative light, would struggle objectively to justify lower than 7/10 overall, and so I do wonder on what possible basis some have given this game a 0/10 or 2/10…

This truly outstanding game raises the bar to new heights that will be extremely hard to reach for BioWare, Bethesda and any other developer. [07/2015, p.38]

The Witcher 3's subject matter, its almost defiant doubling down on its treatment of women as titillating props for Geralt and the player, even as it tries to flesh out more female leads, is its most disappointing aspect. This constant presence weighs down what would otherwise be an excellent bit of closure for Geralt's video game saga — which isn't helped by the control issues that often detract from sequences meant to break up open-world monotony.
