Note: I haven't played the game since the recent patches, and I've put about 20 hours into it (haven't finished the story), so this my take on it thus far; this is more of an opinion essay than a review.

The Witcher 3 is a mixed bag of awesome-sauce & mediocre swordplay. The graphics and overall presentation of the game is excellent; The Witcher 3 is possibly one of the best-looking games of the new generation, and definitely the best-looking medieval-era, sword-combat RPG-action type of game on PS4. In comparison, it makes Dragon Age Inquisition look awful! However, there is an overwhelming focus on cut-scenes, lore, talking with NPC's & making decisions, and so the core gameplay--the combat--often feels..well..not good. It seems that the combat took a back-seat to the rest of the game's elements. TW3 excels in story-telling and in its world's design. The "world" of TW3 is absolutely stunning; there is so much to explore and there is so much variance in the world's design, from the different landscapes, the countless and colorful personalities of the NPC's, right down to the weather and lighting effects; it all makes for a stunning visual experience.
The main thing--and one of the only things--that I don't like about TW3 is that the combat just doesn't feel satisfying at all. For example, only a half-hour after I had just slayed a huge Griffon monster, I'm in White Orchard getting my arse kicked by little blue swamp creatures! While it looks good, the overall balance of the combat mechanics and the enemies' movements & health in this game are a confusing mess. Many people say it's best to play on a harder difficulty setting, but I've found problems with that as well.
There are four difficulty settings available at the start; many fans have said that in order to get the best experience, one should play on "Blood & Broken Bones" difficulty, which is the second hardest. I've tried playing through the first quarter of the game on both "Sword & Story" and "Blood & Broken Bones" settings and I found there's a huge difference between the two. On the latter/harder setting, even the enemies early in the game--such as the blue swamp monsters--will totally kick your ass, whereas on the "Sword & Story" setting, you can slice through ten of them without taking any damage! For me, it was very hard to find a sweet-spot in the difficulty settings where I could enjoy a challenge and not be dying "cheap" deaths constantly. Hopefully the balance of the game has improved since last played it. Again, please note I haven't played it since the big patch, which added some things (like loot chests) and other tweaks.
Aside from having some pretty lackluster combat, The Witcher 3 is a good game overall, and I especially love all the references to Eastern European monsters & folklore. Also, you know hundreds of thousands of gamers (who love this game) can't be wrong when they say it's a great game, or even a GOTY. There is so much to do in TW3, it could possibly keep you busy for a hundred hours or more. It's definitely a game worth a try, but if you prefer combat over lore and stories, you'll probably get bored fast. However, if you love a good lore-heavy RPG with lots of deep and interesting stuff to explore, loot, and learn about the world--which is incredibly large--then this is your game!

Skyrim is going to be the game I'm comparing it too... Yes it's old now however that game has in my eyes beaten all recent games in the genre... Witcher 3 has Raised the bar and taken the crown from Bethesda's Skyrim. The locations, Landscape designs, WEATHER EFFECTS ARE PERFECTLY ON POINT that the trees just almost rip out of the ground at such windy rainy stormy weather, Movigraad is one of the most beautiful cities created in any video game Architectually wise, and interactive wise ( hair cuts, Baths, Bars, Halls, Markets, Love house, city square which includes a band playing very nice music in a very social area where merchants/Black smiths are selling their goods. The combat is crazy insane, having to use magic, potions, swords, dodge and roll in such quick times. You Role Play as A legend Geralt Of Rivia who is such an honour to play as, now there are novels from before GAME OF THRONES was even created which SHUT DOWN THE HATERS OF THIS GAME FOR SAYING ITS A COMPLETE COPY! (I love game of thrones) The Lore this Witcher has throughout characters, paintings, locations especially real life myths and legends which enables you too wanting to research. The in game bestiary was my best friend containing a long in depth info about each different any and what effects mostly. Crafting is something too addictive just like in skyrim I'd call it a tie in crafting wise aswell as the master crafting upgrading. The Witcher 3 is hands down my game of the year, hopefully The game of the year, considering I 100% complete nearly all my games on Consoles and this game just stands out the most. I believe this is the only game I've ever played that I can give 10/10 with absolute conviction, but this is probably due to the fact that a) I've read the Witcher novels and b) I'm Polish. Since I devoured all the books as a teenager, coming back to this world was like meeting old friends long not seen (a feeling strangely absent from my experience with The Witcher 1 and 2, neither of which I completed, by the way) and the game translates the world of the Witcher impeccably. This world also derives a whole lot from the ancient slavic and Polish traditions and legends, so you really need to be Polish to get 100% of the atmosphere. Yet again, if you don't speak Polish, you will have a great opportunity to experience something a bit different to your typical heroic fantasy reality. Don't be fooled by the "standard" medieval setting of the game - when you encounter mages concerned with "ecology", expansive empires championing gender equality, or a representative of a common folk discussing "democracy", you'll know what I mean. I'm a massive RPG fan and after seeing the reviews, I was extremely excited for this.

Why I was let down after 40 hours of gameplay

    Unlikeable main character
    No atmosphere
    Poor battle system
Too much to do = overload
    Story line not so great

    Good points

    Good graphics
    good voice acting

Having to load a previous save when dying is old fashoned game design that I thought we were past by now, at least let me retry the current fight keeping my experience points and any items I picked up in the fight I died in.
Sometimes when you dismount your horse your character will be doing the swimming animation when no where near water. This is especially annoying when getting off your horse to fight something.
Game does not auto-save nearly enough, I should not have to manually save in 2015.
Not being able to meditate while on your horse is annoying.
The character control while underwater is terrible.
Having to exit a shop menu to equip gear just to sell old gear to shop is tedious and old fashioned.
Not being able to buy-back at shops is old fashioned game design and unnecessary frustration.
Sometimes items glitch and float in the air.

It's world and lore very rich in detail and so beautiful that I usually stop to admire the landscapes - something I rarely do in games. The maps are very big, with tons of Witcher activities to carry out, and alive too with monsters in habitats and humans in villages, that actually sometimes collide, resulting in the deaths of entire villages. Gameplay relies on you, the player's knowledge of how, and when monsters attack, what their weaknesses are, and what tools to use. Basically it's a role-playing game that gets the job of role-playing done - where you, the player, are put into the role of Geralt of Rivia. You are made to try to think like him, immerse yourself in the character, and be him. All the while, maybe adding a bit of your personality to him, to decide what's right or wrong in the game. Choices also actually affect how the game ends. It's the first game to actually get me somewhat teary eyed in the ending.

Also, don't mind those people who complained that the PC version took a hit in the graphical area. The graphics are still beautiful and PC people are just-- ugh.

All in all, this game is a great end to Geralt of Rivia's story. Get it when you can.

Only problem I had with the game is if you are a obsessive side quest completer like myself, you will become godlike and the game breaks a bit and you have to go out of your way to find monsters that are a challenge. You'll also exhaust yourself and eventually just want to plow through to the finish to "get it over with". You don't have to complete every little thing and I think had I taken that approach earlier on I wouldn't have grown somewhat bored with the game before i finished it. Quests become a bit more of a checklist. Kill the griffin, check, kill the bog monster, check, kill the Basalisk, check.

That is my only real complaint, had the quests kept up with my level a bit more and not become a chore it would have gotten a 9 or 10. As is, amazing game, but you feel like you leave something behind when a quest says level 8 and you are already 23 and just walking through the daisies.

The Witcher 3's subject matter, its almost defiant doubling down on its treatment of women as titillating props for Geralt and the player, even as it tries to flesh out more female leads, is its most disappointing aspect. This constant presence weighs down what would otherwise be an excellent bit of closure for Geralt's video game saga — which isn't helped by the control issues that often detract from sequences meant to break up open-world monotony.
