Note: I haven't played the game since the recent patches, and I've put about 20 hours into it (haven't finished the story), so this my take on it thus far; this is more of an opinion essay than a review.

The Witcher 3 is a mixed bag of awesome-sauce & mediocre swordplay. The graphics and overall presentation of the game is excellent; The Witcher 3 is possibly one of the best-looking games of the new generation, and definitely the best-looking medieval-era, sword-combat RPG-action type of game on PS4. In comparison, it makes Dragon Age Inquisition look awful! However, there is an overwhelming focus on cut-scenes, lore, talking with NPC's & making decisions, and so the core gameplay--the combat--often feels..well..not good. It seems that the combat took a back-seat to the rest of the game's elements. TW3 excels in story-telling and in its world's design. The "world" of TW3 is absolutely stunning; there is so much to explore and there is so much variance in the world's design, from the different landscapes, the countless and colorful personalities of the NPC's, right down to the weather and lighting effects; it all makes for a stunning visual experience.
The main thing--and one of the only things--that I don't like about TW3 is that the combat just doesn't feel satisfying at all. For example, only a half-hour after I had just slayed a huge Griffon monster, I'm in White Orchard getting my arse kicked by little blue swamp creatures! While it looks good, the overall balance of the combat mechanics and the enemies' movements & health in this game are a confusing mess. Many people say it's best to play on a harder difficulty setting, but I've found problems with that as well.
There are four difficulty settings available at the start; many fans have said that in order to get the best experience, one should play on "Blood & Broken Bones" difficulty, which is the second hardest. I've tried playing through the first quarter of the game on both "Sword & Story" and "Blood & Broken Bones" settings and I found there's a huge difference between the two. On the latter/harder setting, even the enemies early in the game--such as the blue swamp monsters--will totally kick your ass, whereas on the "Sword & Story" setting, you can slice through ten of them without taking any damage! For me, it was very hard to find a sweet-spot in the difficulty settings where I could enjoy a challenge and not be dying "cheap" deaths constantly. Hopefully the balance of the game has improved since last played it. Again, please note I haven't played it since the big patch, which added some things (like loot chests) and other tweaks.
Aside from having some pretty lackluster combat, The Witcher 3 is a good game overall, and I especially love all the references to Eastern European monsters & folklore. Also, you know hundreds of thousands of gamers (who love this game) can't be wrong when they say it's a great game, or even a GOTY. There is so much to do in TW3, it could possibly keep you busy for a hundred hours or more. It's definitely a game worth a try, but if you prefer combat over lore and stories, you'll probably get bored fast. However, if you love a good lore-heavy RPG with lots of deep and interesting stuff to explore, loot, and learn about the world--which is incredibly large--then this is your game!

Skyrim is going to be the game I'm comparing it too... Yes it's old now however that game has in my eyes beaten all recent games in the genre... Witcher 3 has Raised the bar and taken the crown from Bethesda's Skyrim. The locations, Landscape designs, WEATHER EFFECTS ARE PERFECTLY ON POINT that the trees just almost rip out of the ground at such windy rainy stormy weather, Movigraad is one of the most beautiful cities created in any video game Architectually wise, and interactive wise ( hair cuts, Baths, Bars, Halls, Markets, Love house, city square which includes a band playing very nice music in a very social area where merchants/Black smiths are selling their goods. The combat is crazy insane, having to use magic, potions, swords, dodge and roll in such quick times. You Role Play as A legend Geralt Of Rivia who is such an honour to play as, now there are novels from before GAME OF THRONES was even created which SHUT DOWN THE HATERS OF THIS GAME FOR SAYING ITS A COMPLETE COPY! The in game bestiary was my best friend containing a long in depth info about each different any and what effects mostly. Crafting is something too addictive just like in skyrim I'd call it a tie in crafting wise aswell as the master crafting upgrading. I believe this is the only game I've ever played that I can give 10/10 with absolute conviction, but this is probably due to the fact that a) I've read the Witcher novels and b) I'm Polish. Since I devoured all the books as a teenager, coming back to this world was like meeting old friends long not seen (a feeling strangely absent from my experience with The Witcher 1 and 2, neither of which I completed, by the way) and the game translates the world of the Witcher impeccably. This world also derives a whole lot from the ancient slavic and Polish traditions and legends, so you really need to be Polish to get 100% of the atmosphere. Yet again, if you don't speak Polish, you will have a great opportunity to experience something a bit different to your typical heroic fantasy reality. Don't be fooled by the "standard" medieval setting of the game - when you encounter mages concerned with "ecology", expansive empires championing gender equality, or a representative of a common folk discussing "democracy", you'll know what I mean. I'm a massive RPG fan and after seeing the reviews, I was extremely excited for this.

Why I was let down after 40 hours of gameplay

    Unlikeable main character
    No atmosphere
    Poor battle system
Too much to do = overload
    Story line not so great

    Good points

    Good graphics
    good voice acting

Having to load a previous save when dying is old fashoned game design that I thought we were past by now, at least let me retry the current fight keeping my experience points and any items I picked up in the fight I died in.
Sometimes when you dismount your horse your character will be doing the swimming animation when no where near water. This is especially annoying when getting off your horse to fight something.
Game does not auto-save nearly enough, I should not have to manually save in 2015.
Not being able to meditate while on your horse is annoying.
The character control while underwater is terrible.
Having to exit a shop menu to equip gear just to sell old gear to shop is tedious and old fashioned.
Not being able to buy-back at shops is old fashioned game design and unnecessary frustration.
Sometimes items glitch and float in the air.

It's world and lore very rich in detail and so beautiful that I usually stop to admire the landscapes - something I rarely do in games. The maps are very big, with tons of Witcher activities to carry out, and alive too with monsters in habitats and humans in villages, that actually sometimes collide, resulting in the deaths of entire villages. Gameplay relies on you, the player's knowledge of how, and when monsters attack, what their weaknesses are, and what tools to use. Basically it's a role-playing game that gets the job of role-playing done - where you, the player, are put into the role of Geralt of Rivia. You are made to try to think like him, immerse yourself in the character, and be him. All the while, maybe adding a bit of your personality to him, to decide what's right or wrong in the game. Choices also actually affect how the game ends. It's the first game to actually get me somewhat teary eyed in the ending.

Also, don't mind those people who complained that the PC version took a hit in the graphical area. The graphics are still beautiful and PC people are just-- ugh.

All in all, this game is a great end to Geralt of Rivia's story. Get it when you can.

Only problem I had with the game is if you are a obsessive side quest completer like myself, you will become godlike and the game breaks a bit and you have to go out of your way to find monsters that are a challenge. You'll also exhaust yourself and eventually just want to plow through to the finish to "get it over with". You don't have to complete every little thing and I think had I taken that approach earlier on I wouldn't have grown somewhat bored with the game before i finished it. Quests become a bit more of a checklist. Kill the griffin, check, kill the bog monster, check, kill the Basalisk, check.

That is my only real complaint, had the quests kept up with my level a bit more and not become a chore it would have gotten a 9 or 10. As is, amazing game, but you feel like you leave something behind when a quest says level 8 and you are already 23 and just walking through the daisies.

The tale of “Geralt of Rivia” gradually reveals a well complex individual with a group of nearly equally intriguing of allies, friends and nemesis who are worthy of their own tales. The quest designs are thoughtful, and express real and believable human needs without seeming as contrived with the express purpose of giving the player something to do. The options before Geralt, and for the most part the outcomes, make sense.
I love the game, but here’s my wishlist….

The world is large, but more variation in landscape could augment that sense of being in a vast world. The leveling system and tech tree are adequate, but could use some tweaks. More depth of character customization/specialization would augment the game. I would also prefer to see a combat system more akin to LOTR Shadow, Batman, etc. that is conducive to combos.

Clearly the above mentioned suggestions didn't ruin the game for me, as I still rate it at 9.5.

Truly a PS 4 essential for lovers of open world RPGs.

If one has played Demon's or Dark Souls then the action of this games combat is rather primitive. Enemies will not chase beyond a certain radius making them cheatable. The amount of quests is fantastic however it is hard to fast travel in the proper direction of your current quest because its not integrated very well. One other issue of combat I find very annoying is swords are automatically sheathed and it can really trick you into player error stumbling into areas thinking you are ready for combat only to find out you are not. Load times are also extremely long. However on top of all these shortcomings this is still a fantastic game. Its sheer size and above average quality beg to grab your attention for a very fun playthough nonetheless. Although the combat can be bad there are a lot of interesting monsters and beasts to find and stumble across and a fantasy world feeling does exist that at times is exceptional. Despite some shortcomings I have high praise for this game and would fully recommend it. Just be warned its dialog heavy which also is its strength for critical path plots exist in this game and no two play throughs will be exactly the same. A very high quality open world game. Expand

So that ending definitely drew me away. There are some other small complaints like some missions don't live up to their difficulty level and some exceed it by some margin. I did't use crafting much cos the game never really made it feel necessary. Also the inventory system is complete **** I played it on my ps4, so like everyone else i had some frame rate issues and few bugs, very few though nothing too bad. Overall one of the best games I've ever played and definitely the best rpg i played. Expand

A perfect game for a diehard books fan like myself. CDPR flawlessly captured the feel of the saga. Graphics are great, characters are amazing, quests are best I've ever played in pretty much any RPG, the map is huge and full of secrets and things to do. After 2 full runs and in the middle of NG+, an easy 10/10 for me.

let me start telling you this, I bought the GOG version and I have been playing this game ever since it's released, currently I have its 1.08.4 patch which is considered as the latest . I admit I have a bit old PC but I can play GTA V with high settings fine, I can play Dragon age inquisition with high settings fine but not this game? why? some says this game is so demanding but to belet me start telling you this, I bought the GOG version and I have been playing this game ever since it's released, currently I have its 1.08.4 patch which is considered as the latest . I admit I have a bit old PC but I can play GTA V with high settings fine, I can play Dragon age inquisition with high settings fine but not this game? why? some says this game is so demanding but to be honest, when a game is so demanding it means either the game is graphically awesome or badly optimized but we everyone know Witcher 3 downgraded its graphic quality just before it's released and it doesn't have a realistic look so why it's so demanding? because it's unoptimized , the game is a console port and badly optimized, and there is poorly coded Maxwell favour Gamework on top of it.

there are a lot of bugs in the game, character movement isn't that fluid like in GTA ,you feel like it's a bit robotic when moving, the same feeling has when fighting and riding a horse. water quality, terriann quality isn't that good either ,it looks like a bit cartoonish, the only pro side of this game is having good looking characters and weapons.

animations are quite bad, character movement, tree shaking when it's windy are absolutely horrific. the trees shake like thick papers when it's windy, there is no realism at all in it. the water quality is quite bad, it doesn't even look like water, but some heavy fluid. combat is repetitive and boring and dull, horse riding doesn't feel like fluid, it's same as the character movement, so robotic, if you want the best character movement then go to GTA. the story is fine, level design is fine, the world is huge and wonderful ,there are a lot of places to explore , but the game performance discourages me from playing, who wants to play a game with 30fps and low?
in towns it goes even low like 23fps, I reduced all settings lowest as possible but the situation is still same, I have seen that a lot of people defend this game, I dunno why, you need a gtx 980 to play this game with Ultra quality at 1080p@60fps but that card is so expensive, it just suggests gtx 770 as recommended means u should be able to play the game with max settings with 1080p@60fps with gtx 770 but it's quite impossible.
when you set all settings to Ultra on gtx 770 ,the fps goes to 30fsp.so basically on a recommended system you can't achieve 60fps at 1080p on Ultra mode. then why it's even recommended?
only SLI high end cards can pass the 60fps and single gtx 980 card can achieve 60fps in towns.

this game purposely reduced the performance of AMD cards recently though it's fixed I am pretty sure still it favours Nvidia Maxwell users over other users. I feel like this game is developed to push people to buy Maxwell cards so it's more like a Nvidia marketing plan. Physx can't even be turned off.

I suggest that wait for like 2-3 years until more powerful hardware shows up and bugs in this game are fixed, then go ahead and buy because this game is worth, I heard that DirectX12 patch might come so soon which means there will be a tremendous performance boost since gtx 400 cards. don't buy now and wait, so you can have the game at cheap price too.

    1) Combat and Camera are clunky?
Not really. The camera is no worse than that of GTA IV which you quickly get used to and the combat is fluid and exciting.

    2) Movement is tricky
It was, but the developers added a setting that gives you the option to change this.

    3) Quests are repetitive
Seriously? I've fought with kings in foreign lands, swayed wars, toiled with the love of two mages, chased my (surrogate) daughter across the world, got into bar brawls, became a brawling champion, played cards, negotiated with Elves and Dwarves, raced horses, been in a play, searched the world for master crafted armour, fought in castles, got drunk with old friends and tracked/slain countless beasts from powerful vampires to packs of wild dogs... repetitive? Please.

    4) It's bugged and broken
Within a very short space of time the developers rolled out eight patch updates. Okay so not everything was fixed but it just improves all the time and improves quickly at that. Not good enough? Well, on top of that they also released sixteen (yes 16) free DLC updates - ranging from simple cosmetic options to entire new quest lines.

    OVERALL
The Witcher 3 is an epic AAA title that could be a justified winner of Game of the Year (dependant on Fallout 4, Metal Gear and Halo V of course).

If you're undecided on this title then you're seriously missing out on a magnificent game. If you like the RPG or Fantasy genre then it should be a no-brainier. If that's not something you typically like then I challenge you to play this right through and see if you feel the same when you're done.

Amazing graphics and music - found myself quite happy to just explore the world and find new questing areas / things to do - and there's plenty.

Characters have been extremely well developed and have real grit about them. Lots of 'love' interests (always good). Monsters are diverse with interesting combat mechanics. Alchemy is great and well worth investing in. Nothing bad to say really- apart from some stupid choices I made in the game leaving me lonely and a little lost in the end - but hey... maybe that's just me.

Pro tip - make manual save games often. As once you finish the game, you may want to see what happens when you make a different dialogue choice and if you haven't got a relevant save game, sorry big guy, you're going back to the start.

The content is enough for weeks of fun. The graphics are good (altough not as stunning as I expected before the release). The characters and the story are impressively worked out as if the game is a quality novel itself. The same quality story telling as Witcher 2. The open world is large and you can enter plenty of buildings. This is why this open world is more impressive than GTA5, because in GTA 5 you can not enter buildings. The weather and day/night cycle are also dynamic and impressive. The wind really let the trees shake. Does it has flaws? Some minor. The controls are not always perfect during battles and sometimes you will experience framedrops in cities. But that are minor points against a game that is the new milestone in gaming. Any linear game looks completely outdated against this game. CD Project Red set the bar very high for this game and somehow managed to deliver. I would give it a 95 score. The SKILL TREE wasn't too complex and felt truly rewarding. What truly made the game special though, was the living, breathing OPEN WORLD. There are endless monster contracts, side quests, treasure hunts, location discoveries, and random events. It's refreshing to feel as if the worlds entire fate doesn't depend on you, but instead feels like that world was there long before Geralt, and will be long after.
Its hard to find anything wrong with this game, but if I had to nitpick, I'd say I had a few issues with glitches here and there(PS4). Almost all of those issues came with NPCs either freezing or pop ins. Also riding your horse was pretty clunky and at times hard to control. These are both super EASY to ignore considering how epic this game is.
Aside from the actual game, the studio CD Projekt Red, has reminded the rest of the gaming industry that making a great game should be the one and only goal of a studio. Not thinking of ways to take advantage make extra money off of their fans. Absolutely incredible open-world RPG with memorable characters and incredible writing. The mythological and fantasy elements of this game stand beyond the likes of Skyrim and Dark Souls (which is saying something), definitely going to stand as the most memorable game of this decade.

Whoever called this game "Red Dead Redemption meets Skyrim" was onto something. If you haven't played the other two Witchers, read the books, or the comics, your start in this game is going to be awkward and frustrating. This is a sequel with a complex story, a complex world, and labyrinthine mechanics, and will not make any effort to hold you by the hand and put you up to date. However, once you pick up, and finish the first few quests, you'll need to say goodbye to your social life for a while.

While the gameplay is going to be important, the narrative is going to take the top spot. Everything in this game exists to push a story. The people hung in trees and the devastation of a warn-torn countryside oozes atmospheric storytelling. The conversation trees are as important as the gameplay, since something you miss, or a wrong answer, can truly change your experience of the game further ahead. Do not take lightly any conversation, as trivial as it may look. The side quests are so well done, they are meant to enhance the narrative rather than drag the play time of the game. I have a few ones to count as my favorites, but a memorable one involves a singing troll.

Everything in this game is meant to feel like a living, breathing world that you can help shape for better or worse. I think the main victory of the Witcher is telling a compelling story, in an open world game.

It's not without its problems, you can't expect a game this massive to be perfect at everything. Some will complain about the fighting system, to which I believe can be fixed by adjusting the difficulty. The menu interface can be tough to navigate. The alchemy and crafting systems are too complicated for the average Joe, and I wouldn't be surprised if most people won't bother with it. Some glitches are to be expected.

Whatever the problem would be, it can't outweigh the masterpiece. This game has raised the bar in what we can expect in narrative and open-world games. I may even dare and call it, a Zelda game for adults,

The only issues i had with the game is its ability to target loot, and post-death loading times.

    That's it.

There was a negative aspect of the game sure, but to over look every thing else this game provides for something most, if not all games have issues with; is ridiculous.

I haven't played any other Witcher game so i cant say what they improved on.

Camera? Combat? I haven't had a problem with any of these things.
-Annoying dorky voice- i have played demon souls, dark souls, dark souls 2, monster hunter since psp to recent 3ds, -normal voice- and the **** Arkham series.
In comparison to these games........Witcher has both a challenging combat system and smooth camera control.

"ROLL ROLL ROLL" is what most reviewers are saying about the game. No, you still get hit from rolling uncontrollably that's why there's an option to actually dodge/parry which is honestly more rewarding than rolling. I dont know how the game plays on Easy but that COULD be the reason why people who say they've played " dark souls...etc" say its "easy, annoying or boring."

The game plays more like a realistic open world game. Locations don't have level restricted monsters, you have to prepare for everything from bombs to concoctions or skills (level) and equipment.

Its fun, diverse, challenging, immersive and lastly gorgeous.

I would rate 10/10, but loading time really bothers me :-/ .

Good RPG sure, but the voice acting made me want to send the actors/actresses a case of throat losenges. After Geralt trying to be dark, brooding and serious - he ends up monotone and boring. I hope the next game from this developer does a better job with their voice actors.

I loved the Witcher 3 for about 12 hours, it's graphics are beautiful, the storyline is interesting but definitely confusing if you haven't played the others, at times I had no idea what was going on (I hadn't, but I decided to watch a video on youtube that gives you an abridged version), the atmosphere is great and overall, I couldn't fault it.
However, after my initial honeymoon period I became bogged down with the clunky combat, at times it's great, but inconsistent. It does become an absolute mess if you have more than 4 enemies targeting you. Over time my interest in the characters began to wane, I really didn't care less about their plight. The final nail in the coffin was spending my time completing the most inane quests that were all pretty much identical. It suffers from GTA4 syndrome, where all of the quests seem to be go to point A, kill / rescue someone, go to point B. Repeat. It was this monotony that made me quit before I wasted any more of my life on dull quests. I really wanted to like the game, but I fell into the trap of just playing it or the sake of it, and not actually enjoying the experience. Not for me. There are more exciting and visceral games out there. Play those.

Perfect 10, great example of what Next Gen gaming is capable when savants are programming a game. Not only does CD Projekt Red Studio come up with a visually stunning atmosphere from sun rise to sunset, that will put your GFX to the redline for breath taking landscapes. They offer a free DLC program with over 10Gigs of free updates. Witcher fans are eating up the free content. The story line, dialogue, and characters are original and easy to become involved in decisions that will shape the entire kingdom. You can either pillage and steal, kill with no remorse, or save lives and be the hero. Your actions cause a ripple in the entire gaming world. This game is any thing but linear, which you can take over 40 hours of game play away from the main story line without even touching on the possibilities of the game. From dungeon crawling, to monster slaying, to rescuing the damsel in distress, you can even over throw tyrants and war lords. Even the way you decide to kill werewolves or let them live, will have consequences to pay hours down the road. Not one person will have the same experience as the next as the gaming engine pushes the possibilities and the sky is the limit. Great replay value.

The Witcher III is an incredible experience that will keep you playing for hours. It´s graphics, though quite buggy can be amazing. The story is also pretty interesting and it has a ton of different characters. The style of combat is spectacular and there are tons of weapons and objects to use in battle. The title is kind of an interesting mix of the medieval ages and sci-fi.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think we can all agree that this year has been an amazing year for video games so far. I think we can also agree that, with this in mind, no-one expected The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to blow mainstream role playing games out of the water. The game features some simple RPG mechanics (level up, receive skills, create a suitable build) however I don't think any other game alike has caused me to think and adapt, especially in the Blood and Broken Bones! and Death March! difficulties where you are limited in such a way that you cannot heal when meditating. During my travels I'd often get distracted while bee-lining it to a quest location to the extent where I'd spend forty minutes lost in the wilderness while on the way to complete a simple Witcher contract. The quests don't even feel like quests but mini adventures. In fact, I don't think I've come across a single ordinary do-here-fetch-this-come-back quest and that is saying something if we're speaking generic RPG here.
Proclaimed YouTube reviewer Angry Joe states that 'the story is on par with that of Game of Thrones' and I definitely agree. The main story begins like nothing special where Geralt is trying to find his love of yore and upon finding her is immediately sent out to find the girl he raised, Ciri. The story picks up extremely fast as soon as Geralt meets Triss, another of his previous lovers in the city of Novigrad, which feels like it's about as large as a country in itself. The game's release came with some unwanted, bugs and glitches which, usually, wouldn't phase me but upon buying the PS4 version I suffered a game-breaking glitch where I'd get stuck at a never-ending loading screen. This has since been patched but receives a mention because of it's prior existence.
The Witcher 3: Wild hunt makes for a beautiful, vibrant change in the RPG genre and I hope to see some newer video games take the concepts this game has introduced up-in-arms to forge an all new RPG genre.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a concoction of all the great RPG of the last decade. You will feel and see the accolades of games such as Dragon Age and Skyrim. I personally see glimmers of Dark Souls.

The narrative deserves an Academy-Award, and so does the Original Score: the Composers Mikolai Stroinski, Marcin Przybyłowicz and Percival have created a cacophony of sounds that only some games are fortunate to have.

Truly you are able to see the care and detail CD Projekt Red has put into the final installment in their critically-acclaimed series.

Now, one may ask. Is this game the best thing since slice bread? And my honest answer would be no, this game does have some flaws, even now two months after release i am still experiencing glitches and annoying bugs. Stupid things as my horse blocking the way out of a building, or the age old cliche of falling out of the world. But, apart from that, the game is... well... perfect.

It you love combat style of both Dragon Age and Skyrim, imagine them two combined together, that is what you get when you buy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The developer mixes the combat up, you will need to think before you strike. Some enemies you'll need to have a tactical approach against and some other you'll be able to kill with not a second thought.

If you love RPG's like me then this game is an unquestionable- must buy. 10/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This will probably go down as of the best games to come out in the last 2-3 years. The game does everything right from the combat to the character to graphics and story. Everything is brilliantly done. Sure there are a few glitches and the positioning of the candles are very frustrating the game itself is fantastic and is the best in its series which in itself is a big achievement considering how good witcher 2 was. The characters in the game are very interesting to interact with and the side mission are just as interesting. You get a variety of monsters that you can discover and kill by taking on witcher contracts, you can do side quests for different character to get a better idea about them. Even if you aren't doing the main missions there are still a lot of interesting quests to do. You can do treasure hunts, witcher contracts and even game gwent. The story is simply brilliant and there are moments when you can even see Geralt on the verge of shedding a tear.
All things considered this arguably is the best game out on the next gen consoles as of today.

The Witcher 3's subject matter, its almost defiant doubling down on its treatment of women as titillating props for Geralt and the player, even as it tries to flesh out more female leads, is its most disappointing aspect. This constant presence weighs down what would otherwise be an excellent bit of closure for Geralt's video game saga — which isn't helped by the control issues that often detract from sequences meant to break up open-world monotony.
