This game is a tragedy. This game is a tragedy. Following up on one of the most critically acclaimed and popular titles of the PS3, there were certainly high expectations for The Last of Us Part II, and it has not only failed to meet those expectations, but has become emblematic of a far larger problem in gaming, and the entertainment industry as a whole.

To start, I can see the spirit of many good ideas throughout. The visuals, the gameplay, the music, it's all top-notch. The framework for interesting narrative and character developments is present, but what has been applied to that framework is frankly terrible. What could have been a compelling tale of revenge, given Abby and Ellie's near identical personal quests to 'kill their father's murderer', becomes a poorly handled mess as desperate attempts to make Abby appear more likable and relatable fall apart with her ultimate characterization being that of a dangerous psychopath, consumed by her own bloodlust and unchecked by the lawless nature of this post-apocalyptic world. What's worse, is as a person of LGBTQ+ status, her poor characterization feeds into the prejudices many people unfortunately hold to this day, resulting in a character that feels less like positive representation and more exploitation. Ellie, on the other hand, is made out to be far worse than we know her to be in a clear attempt to improve the perception of Abby. And the same is certainly true of former series protagonist, Joel, who is made out to be a monster.

Abby's past is framed in a manner that neglects Ellie's lack of consent in the operation that would've killed her, trying to further endear her, as well as the posthumous representation of her father, to the player despite their complicity in the murder of a young girl. And while there is opportunity for a deeper exploration of 'sacrifice for the greater good' it goes largely untouched.

The game's story and characters all are mishandled and misused at best, or outright abused at worst. Now, does this make the game a 0 / 10? No. What does is the impetus of The Last of Us Part II and what it represents in media.

It's difficult to miss the controversy over the last decade. 'Subversion of expectations' has certainly made its rounds as an excuse for rushed, forced and sloppily handled properties. There's also the implication, particularly in gaming journalism, of a 'cut-off' of insider information which in turn can lead to such outlets losing traffic and by extension, money. It's difficult to remain a competitive news source when you've been restricted access to review copies, trailers, and interviews all because you've been critical of a particular company. But that's not the biggest problem here. That award goes to the sheer venom and spite many companies and teams in the entertainment industry have towards their fan base. To see the directors, writers, producers, all of these major personalities associated with movies, TV shows, and games to show such open contempt for their detractors and critics and to see associated news outlets scurry to their defense is far beyond insulting. We live in a world where if a film releases starring a female lead and it is panned by audiences, there are marketing crews to spin the criticism as sexism to undermine their validity. If a video game releases and consumers flock to berate it, it's classified as 'review bombing' or 'trolling' or sometimes also 'sexism', 'racism', or 'LGBTphobia'. In the Last of Us Part II's case it's all of the above.

This practice isn't just becoming normalized either. It IS the norm. And that's unacceptable. Entertainment media should thrive because of its audience, not in spite of them. The Last of Us Part II is yet another case study in a long, long list of these controversies. It is far from the first and sadly I fear it'll be far from the last.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After spending 20+ hours straight playing through this game I find myself wondering why? Not about why I played the game but why did the writers feel like this is the direction they want for their story? Yes Joel's death was inevitable but why kill him in the most unrealistic and unlikable fashion? Why is a beloved character being killed off by a character we have never met?

Take your favorite show and think about that main character, you know the one who the show wouldn't work without. The one whose actor has won numerous rewards for their performance as. Sure this character may not be morally correct but still manages to find ways to empathize with the audience. Now imagine this character is randomly killed off half way through the story by a character we have never met who is now going to play a pivotal role to the story. This is objectively bad writing. And this is what happened in the last of us 2.

The innumerable number flaws in this story leaves me feeling like I could write a book about it. So I'm going to focus on how the game feels rather than the nonsensical decisions and the unlikable characters. In the first game we are thrust into a world where violence and sadness is around every corner yet the player is often relieved of these emotions through Joel and Ellie's relationship. We may be in a world filled with violence and sadness but the story brings hope and happiness through this pseudo father daughter relationship. And it's beautiful. And it's part of the reason the first game was so beloved along with its characters.

The second game does nothing to bring about positive emotions in the player. The already incredibly brutal violence of the first game has been magnified to a startlingly realistic proportion. And the game goes out of its way to showcase this violence. There is no reprieve from this violence, it goes from extreme violence to more violence then to sadness and back again. This game elicits no positive emotions in the player. The plot surrounding Abby's relationships tried to bring some relief to the story but it fell short as it was impossible for me to empathize with this character. Not to mention the bulk of her story was overwhelmingly sad and violent, following the trend throughout the rest of the game. We were allowed to experience some flashbacks of Ellie and Joel which I believe also tried to bring relief to the story but had the complete opposite effect. Seeing Joel and Ellie together only elicited more sadness, especially the flashbacks which demonstrated their collapsing relationship.

To top the story off the few characters that actually do survive the story have literally lost everything. I'm not asking for happily ever after. I'm asking for a story whose overarching theme isn't to elicit depression in the viewer. Depression and sadness can be explored as a theme without bringing about that in the player, we can see this as overwhelmingly true in the first game. Not just throughout the game but also in its conclusion.

In the end the player simply feels empty, not only were the characters we already knew empty versions of their old selves but the new characters also felt empty. We're forced to watch brutal violence over and over with the writers seemingly feeling like they are making a great point about this violence. What point is that? I really don't know. They seem to feel like showing extreme violence is making a point in and of itself yet its not. We watch the characters painstakingly tear down their entire lives and lose everything and every relationship they have in a suicide mission for revenge just to give up in the end after everything has been risked and subsequently lost. It's so nonsensical and unbelievable that it's insulting to the intelligence of the players. They act like this ending is making some great point about hatred, violence, and revenge but it completely falls flat as the game fails to establish any empathy for Abby. I feel like the writers wanted the player to leave the game having a greater understanding of the hatred within them self and what that kind of hatred can lead to. Yet the game elicited the opposite feeling from me, I wanted Abby dead and leaving her alive left me feeling completely unfulfilled. I found myself feeling angry over the fact that Abby lived.

After walking away from the game I don't feel like I just witnessed something special. It feel like I played through some strange torture porn fantasy that was written by fans who had no regard for logical story telling. And ultimately the game not only feels devoid of characters and plot but also meaning.

I don't care about social politics or sexuality. What i care about is the awesome story and the relationship between Ellie and Joel. They took that away and put it in a trashcan very early on. The story and the characters are horrible in this sequel.

My advice is for you to do what i didn't do: stay with the image that you have about Ellie and Joel and don't look back.

There is nothing redeeming in the cut-scenes, the main vehicle for the narrative, it's just perverse filth for the sake of perversity.

You don't hear gumbas begging Mario to stop, you don't see Doom demons begging for their lives, or the lives of their parents. This "game" is sick, I can only assume that the creative direct harbors deep feelings of resentment toward women and loves seeing them debased, brutalized and vulnerable.

I can only assume the access media reviewers did not get far enough into the game to see most of these cutscenes. I refuse to believe they saw this smut and still thought it was worth a perfect score.

I refused to believe the spoilers and make my own decision. This is the first review I am doing on Metacritic because of how lackluster this game is in comparison to the previous.

Graphics and Mechanics on the game were fantastic... there are sections of the game where the graphics are absolutely phenomenal, and it is seriously impressive how far and how detailed this franchise has come. That being said, the story... I cannot believe that the characters developed throughout the previous game have been thrown to the wayside and dumped on like they have. I am not going to spoil this because there is enough spoilers in this thread, but seriously... I've seen better plot lines in Dynasty Warriors games. Playing as Abby feels 100% forced and you have to conduct things as Abby that are forced. I didn't even like Abby yet I am being forced to carry out actions against characters I enjoyed playing and want to succeed. It's like watching Rob Zombies 31 and not caring if any of the protagonists die because you cannot stand any of them.

I'd rather go back to playing the first game and enjoy the development versus playing this again. I literally hated the forced narrative and essentially destroying characters I built in the previous game. Yuck

the game forces you to play a disgusting looking character that you hate making it a slog getting it to the end. The ending is absolutely disastrous. the game play is boring, easy and riddled with bugs. But the worst part is the hideous sex scene that is unskippable as far i know. This game isn't worth 5$.

Once again, PC culture destroys everything it touches. The graphics and visual design are some of the greatest I've ever seen in a game, but that's where the positives for this game end. The magic of the story and characters that was in the first last of us is long gone. All there is now is inconsistent storytelling and pandering. It's utterly sad to see naughty dog from fall grace.

Here's the analysis from my gameplay so far:

    Gameplay (9/10)
Now for ta majority part of the game you control Ellie, and she feels totally different from Joel. She is light, faster and agile. And now there's an option to dodge the enemy's attacks, I got saved a lot of times thanks to this feature. Another new move is jumping, although it could have been done automatic, they decided to put a button to press for jumping (that isn't bad but I doubt that would be necessary). I'm glad they didn't change a lot from the original gameplay, because they are the things this game is so great. Stealth is a must if you are doing a Hard running, but if you are taking it light is fun to shoot them all.

    Graphics 11/10
Stunning, can't find the words to describe the beautiful graphics this game has. It is impressive this game runs on a PS4 which has technology from 7 years ago. I got amazed they cared for every detail, the foldings on Ellie's jacket when changing weapons to the spores that can be seen floating in certain places. Speechless.

    Music 10/10
The music fits perfectly for every situation in this game, very relaxing when taking a ride on horse.. or very stressing during action scenes. The acoustic guitar is a trademark of this game, even there is a mini game where you can play the guitar using the D-pad. I hope someone could play a song with the in-game guitar, could be fantastic.

    Story 10/10
Ok, there are some way that the story could have take and there are some strange decision of the main protagonists... but hey, that is the story they want us to learn. This world is not perfect nor the people, sometimes you are a hero and sometimes you are the enemy. Put a note of 0 just because you don't like the story is immature. It is told beautifully, so I'm giving it a 10 just the way it is told, not the content or if you like it or not.
    Overall 10/10
If you want a game that balances beautiful graphics, great gameplay, moments of tension and a well developed story-telling this game is for you, it is the perfecto continuation to a great saga. Everyone has to die sometime.

While there’s some beautiful animation and environments, the story is just incredibly incoherent and poorly written. Every beat is so heavy handed and there’s a huge portion of the game that barely ties in with the main narrative. Most of these things you would not take advantage of unless you play on harder modes. The gameplay itself is not varied. The graphics are one of the best this gen. Story wise, the game is **** It tries to tell a story about revenge but fails to deliver on it. The story makes no sense. The ending is disappointing, most of all, because it retcons all the people you've killed throughout the game, so basically it retcons the plot itself. Most of the side characters are really poorly written and have nothing meaningful to convey. On top of that, this game actually tries to promote mental illnesses like gender dysphoria, which is really unhealthy. Verdict: I wouldn't suggest you buy this game based on graphics and game play alone for $60. It is not worth the price. You should wait for a sale and buy it some months down the line for $30. Expand

Seven years after the first episode, The Last of Us Part II is a true masterpiece, at every level : not only has Naughty Dog released a bigger, richer, longer and darker adventure, but its surprising story plays wickedly with the fans hopes, and question the very nature of roles, and what humanity should stand for.
