In conclusion, this feels more like a DLC addon for the first game, rather than a game of its own.

It is literally one of the most boring games I have ever played, in regards to horror game packed with action. Its just boring. Its the Walking Dead but the zombies have mushrooms on them and is packed with modern day politics. If you enjoyed the first game, believe that it deserved more content, expect to play the additional content with no hopes of closure to the mushroom zombie apocalypse, want to play a game that the mushroom zombies have become second fiddle to the human on human drama (such as sexual preference as opposed to are we going to be killed today by **** zombies), are into playable movies, and a game that like Duke nukem forever took way too long to come out and completely missed its hype train, beautiful graphics that are on par with every other ps4 triple a game, being mislead to think you will continue to play with the same character from the first game to find out you play 12 hours of the game as the man woman, and is riddled with plot holes: then this game is for you. Even still, its not worth $60. I stand strong with the "$1 per hour up to $60" law. And that includes replay hours. Its a 25-30 hour 4 part dlc that derails from the story and has been made into child's play thanks to the dodge button. Im actually pissed off that I had to delete Modern Warfare to install this. If you've ever played a Telltales game, then you know exactly what to expect in terms of gameplay. As for the "open world" aspect, please don't fall for that **** either. The biggest area you encounter is like a downtown area, and you can explore the surrounding buildings on set routes because most of everything is "blocked off" by rubble and clutter. The best way to describe this snooze fest is Telltales Walking Dead on Monster with mushroom walkers and a dodge button. In 16 hours of play time, you spend 3 of it in flashbacks. I haven't made it to the Abbey part, but I've heard its on par with playing as Raiden in Metal Gear Solid 2 for the next 12 hours of the game. If you've played MGS2, then you understand and appreciate that comparison. Get gamefly, borrow it off a friend, or wait for a price drop. They've lifted the ban on returning the game, and those that haven't destroyed their physical copies are returning it already, in waves. Play it for yourself and find out. It truly is a spectacle, if youre not a gamer. If you are a gamer, its just another boring game. Keep your politics out of our games, its where we go to escape your politics :) Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got to play the game early and I'm not impressed. Gameplay is improved, soundtrack and graphics are great but the story and characters? Two hours in and was deeply disappointed already. I got to the ending and It's crap. Stupid decisions made by smart characters and shoehorning characters into the story that didn't even matter in the first game. Too many things feel forced and it ruins the enjoyment. 7 years for a let down.

You expect me to play as some random girl put into the story because of some random NPC after doing what she did? Also in TLOU1 it was a completely different NPC looking guy. No thanks. You also expect me to fight a main character of the last game and leave her in a pool of blood? Are you insane? Terrible writing. Abby gets kidnapped and weakened. Ellie doesn't even get her revenge correctly and it's completely out of character. She helps them escape. The last thing she could've done to even make a TINY redemption to the game is kill Lev and Abby. No we don't even get that. We get something out of character. They escape.

This is at best a fanfiction. Will be returning this title. The leaks saved people money. I'm telling you to save your money too. In short, a poor story of constant revenge that has NO meaning and insults the whole fanbase. Biggest let down of the GENERATION. At least on the brightside the moments of Ellie and Joel are good and the gameplay but anything with Abby isn't worth jack.

    Now for the negatives.
First but not foremost are the gameplay mechanics. They are similar to the first game, which had decent enough game mechanics. Unfortunately, the mechanics in this game are actually a slight downgrade. Close combat is this formula: Square. L1. Square. L1. Square. L1. Repeat this ad nauseum on the hardest difficulty to win every engagement. The shooting mechanics were never that strong to begin with in the first game, and the fact they're ever so slightly clunkier in a newer game is more damaging than it would have been if this was the first entry in the series. You are supposed to IMPROVE, not regress. Collecting equipment is ultimately a waste of time, as the final encounter is just the aforementioned garbage melee combat mechanics, and your resources are reset each time you switch characters... which brings me to the REAL problem I have with this game.

    THE STORY.
Holy bajeezus. The plot is all over the place. This game has no understanding of narrative cohesion. The idea of proper character setups and plot arc payoffs are utterly alien to whoever the writers on this game were. This is not Naughty Dog's first narrative abortion, the first being Uncharted 4, but this is by far on a level beyond anything I've yet to encounter in a major AAA title since Mass Effect 3's hot garbage of a plot. The deaths of numerous characters is not even remotely my problem, because if so, I would never have fallen in love with Game of Thrones. Instead, it's about the narrative cohesion: There isn't any. You leap from one narrative to an entirely different one midway through. The hamfisted efforts the plot makes from then out to get you to like a bunch of people you've already put in the ground and its blatant desire to get you to feel bad for them is ruined by the plot's structure. If the events had been re-ordered, maybe it would've worked... but it doesn't.
But worse than that? It's the CONTRIVANCES. Every...single...major...plot point...is born from an absurdly convenient contrivance. Events transpire in the most laughably coincidental ways to get the writers' story to go the way they want it, and none of it comes from any organic story-telling. It's garbage. Hot f**king garbage. It is a mangled abortion of a script and Neil Druckmann should be ashamed of himself for directing such a schizophrenic mess of a story. And when the entire purpose of the game is to put forward a story over every other element, including gameplay? Well then you get judged based on your story, and this one S U C K S.

If you noticed, every positive review is along the lines of "I don't understand the hate. I'm 2 hours in and I'm loving it." The reason for so many dislikes is because the second half of the game is all based on an unlikeable character that feels like torture. It's so incredibly boring followed by one of the worst endings I've ever seen. The ending might appeal to some with a message of forgiveness but that's not what we came here for.

The game is literally called "The Last of Us PART 2" implying it's connected to the first game. Spending half the game as a character many dislike just to let them get away is awful. You don't play Super Mario Bros expecting a goomba to be the main character. That doesn't make it edgy or unique, it just makes it silly and against what the fans wanted. Imagine the goomba beating the crap out of Mario's family and Mario goes for revenge. Mario finally catches him and lets him go. I don't see how any message can be that powerful especially when it wasn't enforced enough for it to make sense.

Except I Saw the Devil doesn't bottle it at the end. Any poignancy TLoU2 tried to have on its fresh take of vengeance is lost in the pure fact that Ellie is forced to kill countless people in the pursuit of her vengeance on Abby, which in the end is moot.

With that in mind and TLoU2's absolute shoddy judgement of what revenge can do, along with repercussions of past sins, you can expect, I'm sure, an onslaught of sequels and DLC to follow each characters off-spring all seeking vengeance on Ellie John Wick 2 style.

The graphics look great, although nowhere near the best. The technical aspects of the game and animations absolutely shine. The gameplay is aged, not that far different from the first, and not an improvement on similar games like Tomb Raider.

Story is a middle finger to the first game.

This game is more of a 5/10 but rated it 0 in response to the deluge of perfect 10's people are giving it and the blind-sided media bias to give the game perfect scores. Less than a handful of score based reviews have actually critically reviewed the game and have instead opted to champion progressiveness at the expense of shining a light on its shortcomings. It begs to question if this game was not as inclusive as it is (and therefore in need of protecting) how earnestly reviewers would have been in regards to the games glitches, dated gameplay, insult to characters and the fans of those characters, and the pretentious plot which has been done to death in much better ways.

What's worse is the media campaign to silence the voices of the FANS who care about these things, and instead to paint a huge brush over everyone is some sort of phobe or russian bot. It's not okay for fans to be disgruntled at a game and give low scores, but it would have been perfectly fine for the cowardly media (don't want to be blacklisted or to be seen as going against progressiveness!) to spew 10/10's all over the place without any questioning as to why?

The Last Of Us Part II, grabs this concept, especially in the trailers selling the game that we will see the continuation of this premise, but in the end was all a manipulation from the marketing team, and probably in the future will have some legal repercussions.

It's true that every human being has different points of view, but for me it's unthinkable what they did to the story of this sequel. Some people are defending it was bold and risky, but for me was a simple act of butchering one of the most acclaimed franchises of the Playstation family.

In the end this game could be a 9 or a 10 if it wasn’t a sequel, but that not being the case, I think it’s the first big disappointment from Naughty Dog, for that my score only reflects the hard work and crunching from everyone involved and actors, because they don’t deserve the hate of the choices that were made by the story board department.

Just finished the game coupe days ago, didn't spoil me before the release ... as a fan of the first game I really can't like this one and that's so sad and upsets me. There are some decisions were made which I do not understand. The greatest strength of this franchise is now the biggest weakness. The story has a lot of plot holes and it's simply not good. The gameplay still stuck in the year 2013.

Script terrible, besides the gameplay are great. The thing is that, FOR ME, the story is essential. I play games just for the story, so I can't like this game even if have good graphics. I was waiting more cleverness in the script.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part 2 esnobou seu principal aspecto, uma historia incrível e bem contada. Matou um dos protagonistas, um dos personagens mais amados da história do video game de forma forçada e mal trabalhada. The Last of Us part 2 evoluiu bastante tecnicamente e retrocedeu 2x mais no seu principal aspecto, a história. Expand

however, when you take away the story of TLOU, this becomes just another generic zombie game that anyone can call it TWD rip off. the story was the main base, the soul of the franchise. And having it done so poorly like that is a major disappointment and i can really see why so many people are angry. So in one side you have people fanboying over ND and in the other you have haters who don't even know what happened and jumps on the wagon.

as for me, this game is just a big and fat "meh." It's not the worst thing in the world but it's far from being a so called "masterpiece." The story is the main reason anyone preffers TLOU over other games, and now TLOU had become just "another game"

It's sad to see naughty dog in a state like this. I've always had high regards for older naughty dog titles but the way the company has chosen makes me rethink ever supporting them in future games.
    I feel let down.
The story as a whole feels cheap and the ending makes things pointless.

Level design is fantastic, doesn't feel like a straight line from A to B despite the levels being linear. Some of the voice acting is near-perfect, convincing & humorous . The fine amount of detail in every little thing from the sound of your foot steps, the sounds the clickers make, your victims, etc. is highly impressive! It's clear a lot of hard work was put into this game to make it look, sound and feel like a masterpiece.

CONS: This story-driven game lacks a story and was not thought out well - it feels like the people who made this never played the first Last Of Us! The infected/zombies take a back seat which is a huge disappointment! The characters act out of character in major ways. Unrealistic character aspect in a post-apocalyptic world. Some of the characters you come across aren't exactly relatable or likable, others are just boring and don't stand out. Some of the dialogue is boring, cringe-worthy and pathetic. A plot hole around every corner. The overall message the game is trying to send is somewhat lost 3/4 of the way through.

If you're a Last Of Us fan I'd recommend playing it....just wait for a price drop/sale or rent it.
However, as a fair warning.... I'd advise to NOT step into this game with the first Last Of Us in mind or thinking it as a Last Of Us sequel. Best way I can explain that is by saying The Last Jedi wasn't really a Star Wars movie and you shouldn't approach it thinking it was going to be one. At least that's my personal opinion on the subject.
    Happy Gaming!

EDIT: Originally I gave this a 4.... having just completed the game I have to drop it to a 2. Just plain awful story. Some parts are fun, the rest has this "okay, well I've already started it ....might as well finish it" feel to it.

Sadly all of this is tainted by a mess of a story that tries way too hard to come across as gritty and deep, while disrespecting the previous game and its characters. Established characters are being railroaded and behave in either stupid or despicable ways, just to drive home a very banal morality tale about the cycle of revenge. The magic of The Last Of US, that made the previous game special, seems entirely absent.

Amateur writers are often faced with the criticism of "Don't cut yourself on all that edge", but the writers in charge of TLOU2 seem to have entirely skipped that stage of development and self-reflection. The more shocking and uncomfortable, the better right? No sense of subtlety in sight and no taste. The game tries to tackle many adult themes and is geared towards a mature audience, but comes across as incredibly juvenile. It's like the wet dream of a 16 year old kid about the most violent and super edgy grim-dark story they could imagine.

The game is obsessed with proving some kind of point and it seems like your typical instance of writers on a huge ego-trip. The previous game posed the question, whether, in the end, it was all for nothing in a brilliant way, making the player consider the consequences of the violence. In this game the question-mark is entirely absent. "It was all for nothing" and there's nothing to take away from it but a banal "revenge is bad" morality tale, which 99% of its audience don't need to learn. Ellie and Joel deserved better. What a disgrace.

The amount of talent that was wasted on this project is incredibly heart breaking. It also feels like this put the nail in the coffin for the series.

An opening note about "review bombing": take a look at the positive reviews. See how many of the reviews don't go beyond a paragraph, or even a sentence? And in addition, that ten is the only review on that account? This is my first review, but I've tried to be as fair as possible, since I feel something needs to be said about how rhis all was handled. A large portion of the negative or mixed reviews are well-written criticisms of the game by fans of the series, while many of the 10s don't even mention a thing about the game itself. Don't review the game until you've finished it? I highly doubt all the positive reviewers have played the game through, either. Is "review bombing" justified when it's positive? Even if it's being done to counteract the backlash, it's still highly disingenuous and doesn't help the cause in the long run. With gaming journalists constantly being strong-armed into giving AAA titles high scores, honesty is becoming a precious commodity. The score disparity means something is wrong. The game has its good points, but it is definitely not flawless. Neither side is innocent. Look for yourself and think critically before blindly pushing your own narrative.

    With that said, the review.

The game looks, feels, and sounds amazing. There's no denying that. The graphics are breathtaking, and I'd say that aesthetically speaking, the game is unlike anything else on the console, pushing the PS4 to its absolute limits. A fitting sendoff, in light of the PS5's approaching release. The sound design is haunting, the musical score, environment, and enemies all sound incredible. This all ties together to paint possibly the most realistic and immersive picture of post-apocalyptic America I’ve ever seen. Play it on the biggest screen you have, wear headphones, and enjoy.

In terms of gameplay, it's good. It builds upon the established formula, refining it into a smooth and enjoyable stealth-action gameplay loop, tried and true. However, I wouldn't say it's game-changing, especially in comparison to its predecessor. TLOU brought us an entirely new experience, heart-pounding and suspenseful in a way that transformed the zombie genre. TLOU2 is equally exhilarating, but I wouldn't say it breaks any significant ground that its predecessor hadn't already. As a standalone game, it's excellent. As a sequel to the first game, which made me fall in love with the genre, it's just a tad disappointing.

Now, the story and characters. What the vast majority of reviews, me included, find issue with. I won’t get into detail about major plot points in order to keep this review friendly to those who haven’t played the game yet.

The way the story unfolds is confusing, forgettable, and downright infuriating at points. I think the idea was great; however, the order that it’s presented to you only made me less invested as the game went on. It retcons beloved characters, doing complete 180s on their personalities in ways that go beyond subversion into alien-skinsuit territory. The new characters that the game attempted to make me emphasize with were unlikable for multiple reasons, even to the point where I would take more risks in combat, not valuing their lives as highly. felt detached from the characters and uninvested in the story; so, why play the game?

All in all, TLOU2 would have been a great game, were it not a sequel. However, it is a sequel. It can’t be judged purely on its own merit. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is great, but the story falls short. And that’s the issue. TLOU established itself as a narratively-driven game, a story about forging bonds and finding the good in a brutally unforgiving world. TLOU2 is a revenge story that beats you while you’re down and leaves you empty by its conclusion. Perhaps that was the point. Subversion isn’t a bad thing in itself. It can be a powerful tool, where betraying established expectations can create an experience more powerful than before. However, there’s a difference between subversion and indiscriminately breaking down aspects of a beloved series for the shock factor. The marketing seemed to double down on this idea, the trailers promising an entirely different game than what you ultimately buy. It’s shocking, but not in a good way.

The Last of Us should have been the last entry in the series. Go play that, wait for this to go on sale or pre-owned, and save yourself some cash.

The first Last of Us is still one of my favorites, so this game was a 7 year long wait. Technically, the game is no different than other Naughty Dog games. Every gameplay mechanic is improved and built upon. I found stealth to be more enjoyable. Every encounter is different. It is a semi-open linear world, so there are multiple paths you can take where you might or might not encounter certain enemies. NPC (unlike previous games) have names and react when one of their fellow mates get killed. The game is gruesome and violent but that is to be expected given the current state of the world in the Last of Us. It's also amazing what Naughty dog has achieved graphically on a PS4 Pro where the game is running on 1440p@30fps.

Unfortunately, on the other hand, the story has left me with a lot to desire. The first few hours feel rushed and questionable, however, I thought this would lead to an ending not possible without taking this direction. However, the ending has to be one of the worst game endings of a AAA game in recent memory. Character-wise it makes no sense. I don't want to post any spoilers so I will say this. "It can't all be for nothing" would describe part I. "It was all for nothing" would describe part II.

Oof where do I start? Well the game is hot garbage with forced Identity politics and an agenda that is forced down your throat. On top of that- it turned out that all the leaks were true and the game was false advertised in the trailers and commercials. The game looks graphicaly pretty good but it doesn’t matter because you have to torture yourself with 30 fps. 10/10 Ign? haha the User score shows you the real and only rating that matters here people. Verdict: DO NOT BUY

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Played and absolutely loved part 1. I don't know what they were thinking for part 2. This game was most noted for its story. While the graphics and game play are awesome, the story falls completely flat. It's almost like the developers didn't play the first part of this game. There is no way Joel would have entered that space with that many strangers and just introduce himself. That makes no sense, it was just done because the plot needed it to happen. They were too lazy to think of a creative, sensible way to kill him that was in line with his character.

Joel's death isn't the real problem however, while the way it happened is stupid, it does carry emotional weight. The big problem is that there is absolutely zero pay off. Joel is not avenged. So what was even the point of his death? It leaves a great feeling of dissatisfaction as his death is rendered meaningless. He was killed just for the shock value and that's it.

I just don't know how they got it so wrong after first getting it so right. The thing that made the first game so successful was the bonding of the characters, that is what worked. They completely missed the mark on this one. Amazing graphics and really solid game play can only take a game so far. If that's what you're interested in then definitely play this game. But if you think it'll be as compelling a story as its predecessor, think again.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
