This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ok. Here we are after 7 Years. First of. I never have never done a review for a Game before. But I´m a huge The Last of Us Fan. I finished the first Part on the PS3 3 Times and the Remastered 2 Times. The first Part is not perfect. The KI is dull and the gameplay kinda repetive. But the story is one of the best and emotionally touching ones i have encountered in the Video Game Industry. And I have to say, i was massively hyped for the second Part. And now. After finishing it i decided to write my first Review to express my dissapointment. Notice: This is my personal Opinion and nothing more.
So the Last of Us Part 2 is graphics wise a beautiful game. The Apocalypse looks absolutly stunning. It is detailed and believable. The Motion Capturing is top Tier. The Facial expressions are just great. The sequences of Ellie and Yoel are just what i expected and bring back the warm feeling i have developed for the characters during the first Game.
And unfortunaly thats the only positive points i have for this Game. The Character of Abby is just.......... I dont know. I came never to the point where i started to sympathize with her. The game really tries to show you her perspective, for example when you see the Hospital scene from the first Game with diffrent eyes, but for me she just stays the character that killed Joel. I have no problem with Joel dying. I expected it from this Game. But not in this way. What leads me to the biggest Problem i have with this Game.
The Story. Goddammit. if anyone of you reading this works as a Writer for a Game Studio, Movie Studio or Comics. PLEASE TAKE NOTES: SUBVERTING EXPECTATIONS DOES NOT MAKE AUTOMATICALLY A GOOD STORY! Seriously we have edured enough of this **** The Story is a classic Circle of Revenge. Nothing wrong. The Story of Part 1 wasnt Groundbreaking either. But Part 1 was well written and Part 2 is not. In Part 1 you had moments of joy, moments of grim, loud moments, silent moments. Part 2 is misery Porn. And it uses the shocks. Remember Ellie killing David in Part 1? Like we dont see the dismembered Face? It was left to your Imagination. Part 2 shows off the violence like nothing before. I have no Problem with violence in Storys as long as it has a purpose. Remember Spec Ops the line? The Phosphore Scene? This was violence used well. The Last of us uses violence in a pornographic way. Loud, vulgar for the shock effect. In the End, after all the wortk and all the killings to hunt down Abby, Ellie realises Killing is bad and spare abbys life. Like really? After loosing Wife, Kid, Father Figure, two finger Abby is allowed to drive off with a boat to live happily after? Thats your great story Naughty Dog really? Really? That is some Bull**** an edgy 14 year old would write for his "deep and emotional" fan fiction. Which leads me to my next point of critic. The dialogues. Man who is responsible for this? By god the lord allmighty. The same 14 Year old responsible for the Story? I have read FanFictions with better dialogues. Its just. The ****
My neutral Point is the Gameplay. It is not revolutionary but. Well I guess i have seen worse. And the gameplay of the first part was also a pain in the ass from time to time.
All in All not a bad Game with beautiful graphics, medicore gameplay that wants to much and shokes on its own ambitions. As a sequel absolutly terrible, as a video game ok. Dont waste 65 Euro and wait till its for free with PS Plus or on sale.
And i have no idea how it got this 100 scores from the professional reviewers.

    Wow...just wow.
Did you know Revenge is bad? No? Well this game will take 25 hours of your life, just to tell you, that in fact it is! Naughty Dog just went full "The last Jedi" on this one.
Beside the story, gameplay is completely copy and paste from the last game, with a bit more exploration and, well now you can "jump" (only where the game wants you to, so its basically useless).

Best of all... IGN gave it a 10/10, and calls it a MASTERPEACE. In my opinion TLOU2 feels like TLOU1 but with its soul completely ript out, thus leving it behind as just another mediocre Game.

While the gameplay is ok and the grafics are good everything about the story turned out to be even worse than exspected. First time being dissapointed with ND. I really don't get how all those reviewers brought this game up to a 95.

This game is an insult. Naughty Dog intentionally mislead the public in its advertising, and has delivered the GoT Season 8 of video game sequels. The characters you love are murdered, hobbled, and discarded. The ending is a joke. TLOU 2 punishes you for playing it and then judges you for the actions it forces you to take.

I simply don’t understand what went wrong here in the development studio. It’s bizarre, and as a diehard fan of the first game, this is beyond frustrating and disappointing. Also, this has nothing to do with the game being “SJW” or “agenda-pushing” (I’m a part of the LGBT community myself). I just simply feel like the story, in terms of writing and character development, is laughably bad for a game of this caliber, especially when compared to the brilliant first entry in the series. Please save your money and save yourself from the major disappointment that I experienced while playing this game. While I am rating this game a zero, it’s not because I think this game has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It’s to simply point out the hypocrisy of many influenced game journalists, as well as blind fans, when they rate the game a ten. Thank you for reading. Expand

While I enjoy the combat even though it's outdated, I play last of us for story, the story is what made this games downfall. I will point out just one very big plotpoint now, will not spoil the rest. The way they handled one particular death in this game is bad... and I mean BAD. so you will tell me a person who killed hundreds of guys in the last game... met his end by a golfclub? Let's be real, you know who I'm talking about and I don't think any of us expected him to survive this game... But kill him like that and not even at the end of the game? This game is a tragedy. Following up on one of the most critically acclaimed and popular titles of the PS3, there were certainly high expectations for The Last of Us Part II, and it has not only failed to meet those expectations, but has become emblematic of a far larger problem in gaming, and the entertainment industry as a whole.

To start, I can see the spirit of many good ideas throughout. The visuals, the gameplay, the music, it's all top-notch. The framework for interesting narrative and character developments is present, but what has been applied to that framework is frankly terrible. What could have been a compelling tale of revenge, given Abby and Ellie's near identical personal quests to 'kill their father's murderer', becomes a poorly handled mess as desperate attempts to make Abby appear more likable and relatable fall apart with her ultimate characterization being that of a dangerous psychopath, consumed by her own bloodlust and unchecked by the lawless nature of this post-apocalyptic world. What's worse, is as a person of LGBTQ+ status, her poor characterization feeds into the prejudices many people unfortunately hold to this day, resulting in a character that feels less like positive representation and more exploitation. Ellie, on the other hand, is made out to be far worse than we know her to be in a clear attempt to improve the perception of Abby. And the same is certainly true of former series protagonist, Joel, who is made out to be a monster.

Abby's past is framed in a manner that neglects Ellie's lack of consent in the operation that would've killed her, trying to further endear her, as well as the posthumous representation of her father, to the player despite their complicity in the murder of a young girl. And while there is opportunity for a deeper exploration of 'sacrifice for the greater good' it goes largely untouched.

The game's story and characters all are mishandled and misused at best, or outright abused at worst. Now, does this make the game a 0 / 10? No. What does is the impetus of The Last of Us Part II and what it represents in media.

It's difficult to miss the controversy over the last decade. 'Subversion of expectations' has certainly made its rounds as an excuse for rushed, forced and sloppily handled properties. There's also the implication, particularly in gaming journalism, of a 'cut-off' of insider information which in turn can lead to such outlets losing traffic and by extension, money. It's difficult to remain a competitive news source when you've been restricted access to review copies, trailers, and interviews all because you've been critical of a particular company. But that's not the biggest problem here. That award goes to the sheer venom and spite many companies and teams in the entertainment industry have towards their fan base. To see the directors, writers, producers, all of these major personalities associated with movies, TV shows, and games to show such open contempt for their detractors and critics and to see associated news outlets scurry to their defense is far beyond insulting. We live in a world where if a film releases starring a female lead and it is panned by audiences, there are marketing crews to spin the criticism as sexism to undermine their validity. If a video game releases and consumers flock to berate it, it's classified as 'review bombing' or 'trolling' or sometimes also 'sexism', 'racism', or 'LGBTphobia'. In the Last of Us Part II's case it's all of the above.

This practice isn't just becoming normalized either. It IS the norm. And that's unacceptable. Entertainment media should thrive because of its audience, not in spite of them. The Last of Us Part II is yet another case study in a long, long list of these controversies. It is far from the first and sadly I fear it'll be far from the last.

You can also completely rush through the game and checkpoint hop with minimal confrontations. This game game just boils down to "Revenge is bad" (but not really) and straight up torture porn. Save your money on this one. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. VERDICT [4/10] I never expected I'd write a negative review about a game from Naughty Dog. I never expected that I have to write this around 3 AM from where I am because this is too much. First, great visuals, animations, sound, music, environment, design, as always Naughty Dog pushing the game's engine to reach the fullest potential of the PS4's capabilities (Not pro). * HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD*

Straight to the point on why I'm giving it 1/10 for the story. (TLOU1 was good because of the writing, not much on the gameplay.) They really tried to mix things up, like how it usually happens in the 'good' movies or films, books or shows. I am in for it and I was already anticipating Joel's death even then when the very first teaser for this game came out. In this sequel, you're going to play as Ellie and Abby. Both characters are going to be involved in revenge (although Abby did it first right away). You'll be able to play as Abby for the next half of the game. Naughty Dog wants you to build empathy for a character that killed your main character. It's a really good concept but it's beyond ignorance as to what they're really trying to achieve here. Antagonist Main Character? Sure you can give me that, Playing as the antagonist because you'll have to accept her "revenge" to your protagonist and empathize with her? No. Big no. Building up empathy for the "antagonist" is like building up empathy for ignorants/murderers allowing your citizens to die from the real world pandemic/police brutality.

    For Joel and Ellie:

Joel got killed in the very first 2hrs of the game (IDK how long, prob even less than 2hrs). Basically, the story was already being set up as a revenge plot. Joel is the key to the revenge plot (forgive me, I love Joel as a character, He and Ellie were the reasons why TLOU1 was great). Now, Ellie was ready for that, and even Tommy was. Let's face it, the game was pulling an LGBTQ card right from the beginning (I'm being sensitive, hear me out). I don't care any of that, Ellie can always be who/how she wants to be (Same goes for everyone out there who's LGBTQ). Shouldn't have taken the political route. What else were they pulling in the game? SJW. (Yes, you've read this from other reviews already). Well, guess what, for 20+ hrs you'll be playing a massacre, killing every single one of the enemies who're Washington Liberation Front except for one character that killed Joel because why would you, right? Why would you kill someone who killed your father-like figure right? That's wrong, killing is bad but only after you've killed like 100 of them and letting go the one you played to kill for the whole game. I guess that's ethical and merciful.

No, you do not set up a revenge plot and not giving it to the end. What's the whole Joel death thing for? (and those you killed with all the graphic/gore?) "He just died because it's life, just kind of like how reality works." It's basically what Naughty Dog is trying to teach us here. The lesson is to kill everyone and only to realize that it's not right and so Ellie let go of Abby.

Fantastic story! Great ending! Way to just steal people's money for selling a plot we all thought how it was going down. Great job Neil Druckmann, I feel like you and your team just want to end Naughty Dog's reign as part of the SIE. No wonder why it had to be released before PS5. Good job on the paid reviews as well.

The writing in this game is a huge step down from it's predessor. The characters are unlikable and the dialogue made me laugh out loud. The gameplay is almost identical to TLOU1's gameplay. The gunplay is fun but the AI is very stupid. Other than dogs there are few new enemies. 80% of the game is fighting generic human enemies who can't see you crouching 10 meters in front of them in broad daylight.

Ultimately this is a game that is inferior to TLOU1 in almost every way. Certainly not worth $60.

The AI feels like it belongs in a game from 2014, and the secondary main character moves like a GTA IV character.
The gameplay feels like its half a decade old, disappointingly the moments you find yourself actually feeling challenged and enjoying an encounter usually turn out to be entirely scripted, meaning you spend 20 minutes fighting a "mini boss" just to realize the only reason the encounter was difficult at all is because you are meant to lose regardless of how you perform. doesn't exactly feel rewarding to find out you would've gotten the same ending to a fight if you didnt touch your controller and let the monster beat you in 3 seconds.

All in all this game is a massive disappointment to anyone expecting a true attempt to continue the beloved story, this game shouldn't even be considered TLOU2, its essentially a new IP that reuses assets, names and voice actors.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jesus, where do I even begin. On a technical level, this is Naughty Dog's best game. The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is buttery smooth. I do wish the jump button was used in a more interesting way. The combat feels mostly the same with new additions like the silencer that I enjoyed the most. I feel that upgrades for guns and abilities have been done better in this game too. Environments feel more real and they were a blast to play through. Those were my only positives sadly. I played this game on hard and god damn is this AI bad, absolutely no strides forward since 2013 and I had to check a few times to see if the difficulty switched to easy or something. And the story, I hated every second of it. The reason that I fell in love with the first game was because of how real the characters were. I know it has been said a million times but I love the relationship between Joel and Ellie and I couldn't wait to see what they would do in this game. So why does Joel get merked in the first 2 hours? It pisses me off beyond belief. In my opinion, the characters seem way off and boring. I hated Jesse instantly and Dina is such a dry and uninteresting person. And Tommy seems so off and the way he acts was so strange to me. Ellie is no longer a witty and impulsive girl that made you laugh and happy. She is now a stone-cold killer with little to no emotion. The revenge plot is just so stupid and I never thought it would pay off. Which it didn't. I hated every second that I had to play as Abby, and since you play her for nearly half the game, I lost my mind. I have absolutely no sympathy for her and what her past was. She is uninteresting and her character depth is dog **** The game is so brutal and violent it made me sick. The way every person is treated and how they all suffer in some way just hurts me. Joel dies, Jesse dies, Tommy gets shot in the head and loses an eye, Dina abandons Ellie, and Ellie ends the game alone, fingerless, and sad. This brings me to the ending which I could barely get myself too. My mental state was that bad. So, why does Ellie spare Abby? You spend the entire game hunting her down and you kill hundreds of people to get to Abby. The moral of the story is that killing is bad and the cycle of revenge, so basically the game is telling me that killing Abby would get me nowhere. But this is stupid because the story tells me that you need to kill everyone in your path to get to Abby and when I get there, the game says no and insert cutscene. At least give the player a choice. I bet 95 percent of all players would absolutely destroy Abby in the worst way possible. Why am I told to kill for the first 25 hours but not the final resolution? It feels cheap and left such a bad taste in my mouth, I couldn't even break a smile. In fact, the only time I did smile was during the flashbacks with Joel and Ellie. It shows what the game could have been without all the hate and sadness. And the scenes like Owen and Abby in the aquarium I just thought about how this scene could have been good if replaced by Joel and Ellie. The game ending with Ellie unable to play guitar and all alone just crushes me. She didn't deserve any of this. This game is so depressing and intentionally filled with hate. By the end, the game gave me so many negative feelings I can't even explain them. Why would anyone want that in a video game? I cried because the game is so sad and feels like a slap in the face compared to the first game. The game did not need to be like this, I would have loved if it was just the Joel and Ellie flashbacks. I still can't believe this is the end result. I could go more in-depth but I don't want to. I can't express how much it hurts me. Just like Reggie said, "If it's not fun, why bother"? So don't. Don't bother. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the release of the magnificent first part, quite a lot of time passed, and the team of developers of this series left many talented people. They were replaced by consultants who completely understood nothing in the gaming industry. I am sure that initially, a different plot and other characters in this game were conceived, but as a result of the pressure of various minorities and quasi-fighters for various rights, this whole thing was rewritten and redone more than once.

In general, of course, there is where to roam. There is a pretty nice picture and not a stupid AI, but still nothing supernatural is observed in this game. I would say you can play, but not really what you need. Skipping this project at the start, you absolutely will not lose anything. I am sure that we should expect good discounts in the near future.

P.S. Honestly, THE LAST FROM US: PART TWO, for me personally the disappointment of the year. I find it very stupid to replace GG Joel with GG Ellie. I expected a good continuation of the first part, but I received a product that is trying to impose on me, the egocentric opinion of pseudo-defenders and the sick interests of a diverse minority. That's just all these people, the game as a whole is not interesting, unlike me. So I suppose this will be the last copy of the game I purchased from this developer, because the further the worse.

The game chooses to avoid the obvious story that we all expected--the story that would have been more challenging to write due to our expecting it, but much more rewarding if they had the talent to pull it off--and chooses instead to go off and wallow in a grotesque landscape that is like something written for the Onion. I find it hard to believe that Naughty Dog's opinion of humanity is so poor that they would craft such an unbelievable series of events. Like Season 8 of Game of Thrones, they seem to believe that subverting expectations is somehow artistic, when the truth is meeting the expectations (in a sequel) of fans in a creative way is the more difficult task for the artist.

Don't get me wrong. The game is a polished gem. If you loved the gameplay of the first, then you will find much to love here. Combat and exploration, the visuals, and the world itself are expertly rendered and beautiful, even while also terrible. That they put great effort into the game goes without saying and nobody should take that away from them. If you're a fan of the Last of Us due to the gameplay and combat, you are in for a real treat.

If, however, you were fans because you loved Joel and Ellie, and because you wanted to see what Naughty Dog would do with their relationship--Joel having lied to her to her face, and Ellie suspicious and, thus, her love of Joel tainted by doubt--then you will be disappointed. Bitterly so. It seems like such an opportunity wasted. Surely they could have made the same diversity decisions that delight Twitter-activists while telling us a story that we actually wanted to know about. In hindsight, seeing Joel in that commercial on television seems a bit cruel and misleading.

To summarize, this game continues the recent fad of subverting our expectations by failing to give fans those elements that made their art so attractive in the first place while wallowing in the negativity they see in the world, like a teenager who first encounters goth and thinks they've had an epiphany. As a technical work it is truly astounding and a game worthy of purchasing, if only to reward the actual artists and programmers who obviously poured their hearts out into this game, but if you were a fan of the original you probably won't enjoy it.

Is art supposed to be enjoyable? Maybe not in every case. But if we're talking about a video game, then, yes, I think it is supposed to be enjoyable. Call me old fashioned that way. 4 out of 10 for story. 9 out of 10 for the gameplay itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was so excited for the next chapter of this storyline but Last of Us 2 story is absolute s**t. I watched Joel’s daughter die in his arms in The Last of Us and loved the relationship that grew between him and Ellie. I saw him grow as a person and while many of us didn’t necessarily agree with his decision at the end of The Last of Us, we understood it because he couldn’t see another daughter (figure) die. I would have accepted his death and Ellie becoming the main character, I have no issues with her sexuality, but to use him as a pawn and sacrifice him in this manner just for shock value was a slap in the face to all fans of the last of us. On top of that, I am forced to play as the character that kills him and then they try to convince me that she isn’t all that bad. Gameplay is amazing, but the storyline that drives the game makes it all not worth playing especially for it to end the way it does (absolute bulls**t). I can’t give this game a zero because of the graphics, world design, gameplay and hard work of the developers are all amazing; But the story was the main reason why people loved this series and now it’s ruined. For me the story is very important in games and in this games it is so poorly written, the characters that we know and we love are not there, it feels like the person who wrote the first forgot who they were. Joel could spot an ambush a mile away but in this game he trusts everyone without a reason and he literally throws himself to the wolves.
The treatment he got was not deserved, he's just used as a plot device. All the things that made the part one so good are absent here, especially the ralationship between Joel and Ellie.

Tommy forced Ellie to search for revenge when she was over it because he couldn't get it himself?! is this really Tommy?

Then you are obligated to play as the Joel's killer for over 10h, and the game tries to force you into liking her giving you useless reasons that of course don't work.

And at the end surprise there is a message, Ellie lets Abby go because vengeance doesn't give you anything instead it makes you loose everything. Really? It's weird because Ellie didn't get vengeance but at the same time she lost everything and even if she had the intention to break the cycle of vengeance, how many people did she kill before the confrontation with Joel's killer? One more person to her victims wouldn't have made a difference, even better, the game would have ended with ,the only reason that made me play all these hours with Abby, vengeance for the undeserved death of Joel.

Technical-wise it is one of the most well detailed and beautiful looking game naughty dog as produced, and gameplay-wise it improves on the original's formula. That's the only positive thing about it.

Unfortunately, despite the impressive graphics, somehow the character design and obvious excessive anti-sexualization made the character models somehow look inferior to the seven year older predecessor, intentually making all charcters look more gritty and androgynous.

And while the gameplay has slightly been improved upon, the game AI, shooting mechanics, and general gameplay formula is nearly identical to the original, which was fairly clunky and outdated even for seven years ago.

And worse of all is the plot, which is abysmal from every possible aspect.

Characters are all the same gritty one-dimensional characters, with very few unique and captivating qualities to any of them other than their SJW characteristics (race, sex, sexual orientation). Even Ellie, who used to be an cute sharp-tongue girl is reduced to a rough monotone protagonist that will make you fall asleep.

The plot seemlying forgets about the infected and randomly remembers that they exists and just throws in random encounters, the vast majority of the game focuses on human survivor wars.

They force you to play a new transgender character, Abby. Who destroys everything you love about the original. Instead of making her the antagonist, they amazingly make her the protagonist which you play half the game as (possibly more), in order to make you sympathize with her instead, which horribly fails. Playing has her is a chore which you wish to end as soon as possible. In addition previous character motives and behaviors are changed and not consistent throughout the story leading to incredible inconsistencies and plot holes.

This game is like a Tumbler fan fiction of the last of us, meant to push SJW propaganda and not a sequel to one of video games most beloved games.

I'm editing this after seeing the full game, and i think, i still don't like how the developers did, ND in general, and some of the issues with the story, but overall, i can't say i felt goosebumps in some parts, and that it made me think a lot. I felt like Abby was the best part of the game, even if some interactions are made in a way to kind of force you to see her as a good person, i still think it woks.
I just hope ND learns how to treat their employees and in the future, maybe people will be less hateful about the game they haven't even experienced.

Not a single character acts like they are supposed to, there is no satisfication, or conclusion to the story, character deaths are there for just shock value.

Trailers included COMPLETELY MANIPULATED scenes: That scene where Joel grabs Ellie to tell her he won't let her do this alone? It's actually Jesse in the final game, Joel is long gone at that point.

That point where OLD Joel and Ellie talk? It's actually a flashback, not present day.

I did yesterday and I am kind of disappointed.

Gameplay-wise, it is very similar to the original game, nothing was really added except the "jump" control which is fairly useless in my opinion. Aiming and shooting are OK but not that great and the stealth mechanics are getting repetitive for a 30 hour game. Very restrictive and kind of boring, the gameplay feels a bit outdated. I expected more exploration opportunities, a wider world and some "open world elements".
The graphics are top notch. Detailed, atmospheric and at some parts they look like next-gen. Visually the game is excellent. Nothing more to add here.
The story is very bad in my opinion. It is almost as if the creator of this game made wrote this plot (and dialogues) to piss of the fans and only cared about promoting himself (more than one self inserts) and advertise his views, in order to attract attention. He is rumored to be pursuing a TV career and maybe that would explain a lot.

From a technical Standpoint it is looking good, the animations are fluid and I would expect nothing else from NDog.
BUT that's about it, the "Gameplay" is what we've seen from NDog for xth time. The same repetitive mechanics, sprinkled on top with antique buttonmashing QTEs.
The Story is utter garbage, I love movies and games and I have seen the exact same story handled a thousand times

This heavily story driven game isn't like it has meh story or something, it's just very bad writing and I've been asking myself the question "just why?"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Absolute disgrace and an insult to the original Last of Us game.

I dont even know where to start.

When Sony realized what Druckmann did to this game they tried to censor everybody even talking about this game (complete censorship of reddit LoU page, then copyright triking everyone everywhere with any LoU2 related opinion/content that criticized the game, and superstrict embargo terms on reviewers that were basically put in to conceal the second half of the game where you play for some unimportant character, just so Druckmann can check his box for his feebleminded agenda and that so people unknowingly buy a game based on false marketing (they never told us we are gonna play as some unimportant and very negative character half of the game)).

Crunch for the poor developers and pushing agenda on their own employees?

Most basic story that a 9 year old would come up with?

Zombie apocalypse being suddenly irrelevant because of agenda?

Ellies immunity being completely thrown away as theres a ton of immune people suddenly appearing in the game?

    Dont buy this game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not sure how they messed up so terribly, but oh boy. Naughty dog has had an incredible track record, with amazing titles like the Uncharted series, Crash bandicoot, Jack and Daxter, and the first Last of Us, you'd expect The last of us part 2 to be their next biggest and greatest game. You'd EXPECT it to be. To be frank, the last of us part 2 is a failure on nearly every level. It turns Elie into an insufferable person who has little to no growth. The choices made are next to unbelievable and most of the time just downright stupid. Pointless plot points and a cast of characters that could be replaced with literally anybody else and nothing would be changed, which leads me into the spoilers.
Let's first get the elephant out of the room first, Joel had no real reason to die. Its the most coincidental meeting in video game history, where Abby just so happens to run into the ONE person she's trying to kill. We're then met with a brutal cutscene where Joel gets shot in the leg, then tortured on screen. Her reasons being that her father was one of the doctors you killed from the last game when you go to the firefly hospital to save elie's life. No seriously thats their justification for abby being in this game. So after were forced to watch Joel get tortured to death and listen to elie scream and say she'll kill every one of them, they make us play as Abby. No im not joking. 10-12 hours of this game is us playing as the character we just watched murder with a golf club one of the main 2 characters of the last game. It gets better though, because at the end of the game, when elie, after killing hundreds of WLF soldiers, gets the chance to kill the one person responsible for joels death, and guess what happens. Elie. Let's. Abby. Go. After everything that she's gone through, all the killing, her killing multiple characters thst are close to elie, she lets her go. I honestly couldn't believe my eyes when I watched this play out. This game fails in every aspect except graphical fidelity and soundtrack, which both sound and look amazing. Everything else about this game is terrible. Mechanics that feel stuck in last gen and hardly feel like an improvement, a cast of characters you never end up caring about, ridiculous choices made by characters, and an abhorrent story. This game gets a 1 from me, which is only because it looks and sounds good, everything else is terrible. This is about as bad as Disney star wars, which i tend to treat the same way, forget its even there and have fun with the older stu

They put a lot of time into letting you customize how you play (loot amount, difficulty, listen modes). That and the flash backs with Joel and Ellie are the best parts of this game. Regarding the game:

The game's story feels so unstructured and not planned at all. In the game one of the most interesting characters in a videogame just got removed so early and in such an unintuitive storytelling way. In addition the newly introduced characters feel so boring and common that I always wanted to skip the characters cutscenes and gameplay as quickly as possible. The gameplay of the game feels quite boring and rather feels like a walking simulator that has no special gameplay or variation elements.

One positive thing about this game are the graphics (Good job art team), but you can clearly notice the extreme bad performance of the PS4 as the game often starts to stutter.

    I can't recommend it.

A game that portrays two sides to its story but fails to convince the player to care for the character of Abby who is Joel’s killer. No one cares or will ever care about Abby, a much more enjoyable experience within the game whilst playing as Abby is killing her yourself than actually progressing the story. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Initially I was very much against a sequel to TLOU. The first game's ending left me feeling hollow and thinking about it for weeks but it was an almost perfect ending. It hit all the right emotional notes due to character growth throughout and it was far more powerful to let the audience imagine the rest of Ellie and Joel's lives and how they might turn out with the unspoken secret hanging over their relationship.

Then I got on the hype train. When this game launched, I saw the backlash but I put it wrongly down to transphobia. Then I played the first half of the game and thought "this is decent" and thought that the bad reviewers were insane. Sure the mechanics are basically the same as TLOU1 and the AI was dumber than a bucket of rocks but I was enjoying it. I actually thought that the Joel incident worked very well and, while the gameplay wasn't amazingly inspired, the graphics and motion capture was top notch. However, then I got to the second half with Abby. Oh boy, what a bloated, tedious mess.

I got the feeling that the developers considered whether they wanted to make a new game with a new protagonist or a game which followed Ellie from TLOU and couldn't decide so they shoved both games together and, by doing so, succeeded at neither.

At about 40% of the way through the game you are suddenly shoved into playing as Abby (similar to the Raiden bait and switch in MGS2 and received about as well) but the problem is that Abby is not at all interesting and it makes the next 55% of the game an utter slog. Abby interacts with characters you don't care about, advances an almost utterly irrelevant plot and almost all of it could have been cut out of the game and the plot would have been a lot tighter. The point the game is seemingly trying to make is that Abby is a human too but that's already blatantly obvious and any subtlety goes out of the window with the game repeatedly hitting you over the head with it. Yes, revenge is bad, we get it.

It's like if TLOU1 had switched from Joel's perspective in the midst of the denouement and then insisted that you played as Marlene doing unrelated things for 15 hours. It would have utterly destroyed the pacing and ruined the ending; that is what happens here.

The ending also renders the entire plot pointless and was immersion breakingly contrary to the character's previously established motivations and characterisation. That said, because of the pacing issues I was just glad that I had slogged through to the end. There was no real emotional pay-off. When your main emotion is "phew, glad I finished that" then you know the plot has failed.

The game succeeds on graphics and game mechanics but utterly drops the ball in relation to story and character arcs. For what is, above all else, a story-driven game a bad story and forgettable ending is a cardinal sin and one which can't be excused. Contrasted to the ending of TLOU, I wish they had never made a sequel as it retrospectively makes the ending of TLOU worse.
