Yes, the story had problems and did stuff without thinking about how much we love and care about the characters but I still enjoyed the game and had fun playing until the end,(although there was a time in the middle of the game where I wanted to stop playing and throw the remote) I continued and kinda understood the risks the developers made..

I’m not sure what the developers were trying to achieve with the numerous and obvious shoehorning of homosexual and trans themes throughout the game, but all it did was make the characters feel obnoxious and unrealistic. What’s worse is that it felt as if they were so adamant in pushing their political views that they felt it was justified enough to bury the entire framework of the original games story under the rug. However in the case of this game, they didn’t just bury the original games story, they trampled and beat it to death, as exemplified with Joel’s death so early in the game and being replaced with an unrealistically physiqued new character Abby. Total disappointment. I'm sick to death of these "cinematic" wannabe games that slow things to a snail's pace with the constant backstories and flashbacks and cutscenes. Meanwhile the gameplay is just another also-ran cover shooter that is mostly on rails. Don't believe the hype!

The gameplay is excellent and on par with its predecessor, the graphics are impeccable, the attention to detail is on another level also. If the story was on par with the original then this would easily be one of the greatest games ever made, unfortunately that is not the case. The big shock is not what ruined the story for me, it was a wow moment an i carried on, when Dina came into play as your partner it got very confusing as i could not tell who was saying what due to their voices being extremely similar, even with subtitles this didn’t help. Then you have Jesse (aka glenn from walking dead) boring as hell just get out of here please....thankyou.
Finally when i thought it was all over it wasn’t you have to play the game as shehulk, and what i can only explain is naughty dogs attempt to pull a breaking bad on us and make protagonist become the antagonist, nicely done but predictable, Then the story goes off on another tangent whereby you make friends with who i describe as the One-Arm bandit an the last airbender, this part of the story seems wishy washy and pointless, its as if they struggled to think of what Abby could have been up to whilst Ellie was raising hell, the term wild goose chase comes to mind.
The cherry on the top that really destroyed it for me and when I thought no, please no, no naughty dog, you didn’t just, oh my yes you did, was when they pulled out the transfender storyline, the lesbian love story was fine although a little awkward to watch at times. But when the transgender storyline popped it was as if naughty dog pulled down their preverbial pants and let current affairs/media/society as a whole slowly insert a 10 inch d1ldo inside them, If the game came out a year later I wouldn’t have been suprised if Abby was Black! I’m by no means homophobic at all but i hear about all this daily in the news, the last thing i or i assume most people want is for this kind of crap to smear its way into our beloved game storylines, theres a time and place an this isn’t it, Naughty Dog should try less to be “original” and please the mass population but instead try to please the gamers and the people who actually play the games.

After viewing a few reviews shortly before release I went into the game with low expectations. The start of the game surprised me in a positive way though and I kept playing. After getting to about the middle of the story line and getting another perspective I started to understand the negativity in most reviews. And I sadly can't say that it was only for a little while that I was disappointed. I have since even stopped playing the game as it ruins the legacy of The Last of Us Part 1 (the stories i've heard). At this moment in time I will not be resuming my journey on there until some things have either been taken out or modified. In my honest opinion, a real shame as it really started of quite enjoyable, and unlike what some said I was even starting to build a connection to the characters.
Naughty Dog if you read this, please look back at what you've developed and consider some changes for the better as right now there's a few things that I consider game ruining/breaking.
Having said that, I still think there's a chance at redemption if some aspects are changed/tweaked (most notably Abby and the need to connect to her)

People criticizing the game for being "LGBTQ+ friendly" are buffoons. The story feels a little clunky and boring at times, but you can't analyze the characters' way of thinking in an orthodox way. One thing, most game developers that "try to be inclusive" seem to miss is that there have been strong female protagonists Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Nier, Metroid, Horizon, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and queer/trans characters in video games with options to romance them for decades.

This "woke" approach is nothing new, nothing special and gamers do not care or want to be represented in any way in a game. What Naughty Dog did was a small inclusion of a group of people yet the game's makerting seems to revolve around the support to the LGBTQ+ community. Gamers don't really care if a character is straight/gay/trans/bi or something else, they care for a story and character development, much the same in the way of a book or movie.

There are books or movies that leave you empty after you finish them, you're not always satisfied with the end but the problem here different. The feeling is quite similar to Game of Thrones' season 8 Deus Ex Machina that ignored character development to come up to an easy conclusion to end it all.

We were expecting another harrowing experience of Joel and Ellie but got somewhat of a backhand slap killing off Joel in the beginning of the game for Ellie's "character development".

To avoid spoilers, I’ll have to be cryptic here. You play as more than one character, and there is a significant difference between how easy they are to control (which seems to be another lame attempt to make you like that character more). Trying to play with Ellie makes it seem like she is physically retarded. It’s like they turn the difficulty down a couple notches with the other character. They move faster, aim better, have better weapons that do more damage, get more supplies, are not noticed as easily, and craft more supplies with less materials. It’s a whole different game where you don’t care who you’re fighting or how much ammo you have, you’re going to win.
Playing the guitar was a clever way of using the PS4 controller, but after doing it again and again, it’s becomes a distraction. Can we get back to the storyline...oh yea, that’s not the strong-point on this one, is it?
Concerning the AI...it seemed the developers could not figure out whether they wanted a stealth or combat game. The AI follows predetermined patrol paths in every scene, until you do something. Then they obviously gravitate towards you no matter where you are hiding. Say you set a trap and sneak away to a quiet corner. Once the trap is triggered, all remaining enemies start moving towards you. Humans and infected both do this. It became most obvious when a human discovered me while I was hiding behind cover, and they were on top of the building I was in. Then he starting shooting and doing damage...through the roof. Hmm, ok.
If humans and infected are in the same scene, they will only engage in a brief confrontation before they act like the other side is invisible. That part made me curse out loud. You try to lure infected towards human opponents, they engage and then...just stop and wander around each other looking for you.

Story: Disappointing, over and over. The drama about ‘who kissed who?!’ makes it seem like you’re watching Pretty Little Liars. I wouldn’t actually know because I’ve never watched that show. Because I don’t care about who is kissing who.
Overall, this starts as a revenge story and it’s obvious they want to say that revenge is futile. But lord they make you pay for it, and that message got beat to a pulp with the ancient Greeks. You find yourself saying, ‘wait we’re going off to do what? What does that have to do with this story? Is this even the same story, and who heck is that guy?’ After a while, it’s not the same story at all

Concerning the events that happen, the developers try too hard for shock value and to mess with your head in obvious and tacky ways. You’re forced to do things that should have been a choice, and were probably bad ideas to begin with.
Also on that part, the decisions that are made by the characters seem unbelievably immature considering the world where the game takes place, and they’re own statements. The characters make it obvious how they little they care about other characters but then drop everything to go do the impossible for them.
Essentially, the first and second game have almost nothing to do with each other plot-wise. Watching it was painful and I wish I had not seen it.

Skip it. For me, the story of Last of Us ended with Joel and Ellie walking into Jackson after they left the hospital. He lies, she cries, and the guitar plays on. Best happy ending I’ve seen in a long time

Before I write my review, let me say that I am a huge HUGE fan of the Last Of Us (and all of Naughty Dog studios games). So much so that before I even started this one, I actually replayed the first one and reread everything just to make sure my experience in this one would go unhindered.

    Anyways... Onto the review...

When I first started Part 2, I was happy to see that this sequel played and felt like the original one. Many of the first game's details were basically carried over and improved. The music, game play, and general ambiance were all kept intact. A perfect example of NOT fixing things when they aren't broken. So to that, I praise the developers. Solid 10.

But beyond the music, the game play, and the ambiance, Part 2 takes what was strong in the first game and tosses it into the garbage. It almost feels as if a different writer or team was in charge of this game as the story telling and the general character development take on a completely different approach. And that's a big problem.

The last of us is a shallow game and that's not a bad thing. It's like if a lake were to have crystal clear water and you can see right through to the bottom teeming with wild life. Or how a glass enclosure can allow us to safely view a tiger in its enclosure. The game is shallow so that you can focus on its story line.

But this transparency is a double-edged sword. Great moments are amplified but so are the crappy ones. Which should make things easier right…? After all, if you know that there would be a heavy reliance on the storyline, all you had to do was make sure that the story lived up to its name.
But perhaps in what could’ve been a golden opportunity became one for disaster as the story line basically fell way short of expectations.
Many of the developments in the original story line were basically "closed off". The relationship between Joel and Ellie was basically stopped. Fireflies became irrelevant. Ellie's immunity to the infection? Didn't even matter. As I progressed deeper and deeper into the game, it almost felt as if someone in the game developer's team was just trying to distinguish Part 2 from the first one. Just because.
And then you have the character development....
Almost the entire game, from to get go, just shoves character after character into your face. Why? I don't care about them. I'm playing this game because I want to find out what happens to our favorite father daughter duo. Therefore.... The only reason why a new character should be introduced is if that character's fate is somehow intertwined with Joel and Ellie. But nope. Instead the developer wastes everybody's time to delve into trying to make you care about characters who are IMO "super useless".

The saddest thing about this game is that I would've been fine if it all made sense in the end. Like if you’re able to pull everything together to make me feel something. But it doesn't. Instead it leaves you feeling ... unsatisfied. So basically, you spend an entire 30+ HOURS on a game chasing NOTHING. Do you know how FRUSTRATING that can be?
So with that all that said, my final score is a 6. If the game was rated without the story and character development being included, I would give it a higher score. But it falls so shortly of expectations I honestly feel at this point that I'm only giving it a 6 because I enjoyed the first one so much.
I really hope that the team at Naughty Dog can see this review and grow from it. I know that they can do better and I've seen it. Here's to hoping that they get their sh** together for Part 3…

Enjoyed every bit of it. Brilliant pacing of the story, most grounded combat ever. Badly wanted to play more of Elie's part in the game. Abby was fun though. Want to explain the in game things more. Just play and experience the ups and downs in Elie's life.

    Weak story
Same old guns, same old skill tree, you will have to upgrade every guns twice and skills upgrade twice

I mostly enjoyed the first half of the game playing as Ellie. I mostly hated the second half playing as Abby. The game play mechanics and graphics are improved, but the story isn't enjoyable, and they kill off characters you loved from the first game and replace them with less likable characters. Overall a mixed bag for me.

Because as we can clearly say the decisions are made prior to keeping in view how that might impact the story, would that be positive ? or negative ? Considering that statements Naughty Dog had a lot of flaws here, they did not have any sense or idea that it would leave a negative impact on the people, they completely neglected the male part of the story literally killed every single male alive leaving it a feminist's game, and they messed up real bad with the story, a sadness which I may not overcome for a shortwhile because they did it and nobody wanted it, none expected it, and probably no one liked it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game should never have received a 95, the fair score for it would be 50 or 60. I played 28 hours and I can speak with all sincerity, this is an average game. Don't get me wrong, but the story of this game is so porously constructed and directed that there are moments that you get lost and tired. Neil Druckmann wanted to implement a whole political agenda within the game, and I succeeded. On the positive points, I can quote 3.

    1° Graphics

Basically, it's all the power of PS4, it's the game that most abuses the capacity of the console, even having downgrade compared to what the naughty dog showed in 2018, is still very impressive and wonderful

    2° Playability

The gameplay of the 1st game was already very good in 2013, here in this game, there was a reuse, expanding and improving what was already stabilized in the franchise.

    3° Violence

The graphic and verbal violence in this game is on another level, everyone is angry and distressed, when you finish a person with Ellie or Abby, it's always with enough anger and in such a violent way that you notice on the face of the characters.

These three points together, they score 40 for the game, but what **** it all up is the story

History would have greater potential if it weren't for all the mess made by the script. Starting with Joel's death, in this game clearly his only use was to do marketing so Sony could sell the game to the community that is a fan of the character and the old game. Ellie, here in this game, completely changed Ellie's personality, I left that funniest and most spontaneous person and an angry and serious adult came in, which didn't agree with her.

Dina, a completely disposable character who doesn't care if she existed or not.

Abby, her story could be something created in a DLC, it would save time and not leave the game so dull and dull. Everything about this character is in exaggeration, Naughty Dog wants you to have that feeling of empathy but you can't feel empathy with this character. She's very rude, very authoritarian, there's no way to empathize with her. They put the key point of her story (Joel's death) right at the beginning of the game and will only explain why she did it and with so much violence after more than 10 hours of gameplay, besides it is not explained why she is so strong, she is very disproportionate, as in a post-apocalypse a woman finds supplements and anabolic to get that size, she is stronger than any male character that appears, it becomes even comical.

But the cherry on the manure cake is the end, it means naughty dog that after we kill all those people, after we lose everything and everyone we had and still lose 3 fingers, you just let Abby go. Why did I spend more than 20 hours killing, stealing, running, all this for nothing?

The last of us 2 is an expensive game that has an ending to a self-help book that costs 1.99. I'm very impressed with the corruption that Sony does when buying these journalists.

-The graphics are very good indeed, but that's expected from the latest AAA game.
-The soundtrack is nice. I wish they'd taken inspiration from RDR series and used music to truly enhance some moments though.
-The story isn't good: they tried to subvert expectations but they only succceded in disappointing us. It is a truly mess in terms of pacing, lots of moments don't make sense and in the end it is pretty a boring revenge story with no payoff. They tried to send the message that revenge isn't good, which is rather unoriginal and badly done.
-The characters I have mixed opinion of: some of the interactions are warmhearting and realistic, but in general they behave rather irrationally or out of character. Also a character is quite obviously the director which is a bit pathetic.
    -The replayability is unexistent.
-The fun/entertainment factor is almost unexistent as too many parts of the game are just a slog.
All in all TLoU2 isn't a terrible game, but it is a disaster when compared to the original and I suggest to simply watch a playthrough instead.

For me, the best moments in this game were the boss fights and the story exposition. I did my first playthrough on "hard" difficulty and it was really well balanced and fair, but presented a good challenge. The loop of killing enemies, hiding, repositioning, and figuring out how to kill the next enemy was super fun. I also enjoyed the two different play styles of Ellie and Abby. Both characters were badass in their own way, with Ellie feeling more nimble and tactical and Abby being an overpowered bare-knuckle brawler.

The standout moment of the game for me was fighting the giant miniboss lady with the sledge hammer as Abby.

Criticism 1: I think the game is slow to get going.

Criticism 2: I think that in the pursuit of making "art", Naughty Dog mislead a lot of people, which maybe wasn't fair. I avoided the leaks and approached the game unbiased and absolutely loved it. I found myself waking up at 5am so that I could get a few hours in before work; I was completely addicted. The thing with art though is that not everyone appreciates it in the same way- people have different tastes and that's okay. I guess I'm trying to say that I understand why many were turned off by the game, but to me personally, it was a masterpiece.

Also, I legit think many of the review bombers did it because playing as a girl with big muscles somehow assaults their masculinity. Not saying that everyone who didn't like it felt this way, but definitely some.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not that the game is as bad as most people filling in these negative reviews trying to tell it is. Rather they're caused by some questionably-positive reviews from the press clashing with all sorts of EdGy internet influencers whining about "SJW content" in the game, which is there, but constitutes less than 1% of the entire experience. it is a very different game from what the original Last of Us was, moving from a classic road-trip structure to something more controversial. Joel's death is actually a very strong kickstart for the hero's (and player's) motivation. I didn't like this idea at first, but the more I played the more I was finding myself thinking that it was actually quite interesting. Something of that reminded me of Gurren Lagann, i guess.
The story is actually not bad at all, and it doesn't fail to provide you with some actual "grey moral". Can't say that I started loving Abby as a character but I definately learned to understand her better. The ending is actually pretty neat. Some light symbolism, some blood. Maybe the only section that really felt weird and forced was the house level. Feeling like everyone giving this game less than 7 points is rather quite young (try 9-16 y.o.) or just brainwashed and be like "I WaNnA Be EdGy and UgHgh SjWs ArE CoNQUeRiNg Us". It is legitemately a very good game and a tech-masterpiece, with nice mechanics, occasionally clever writing(because sometimes it does feel a bit clunky), cool visuals, very nice game design and many other features. This game is Bs… I can’t believe the developers gave us such a masterpiece as the original tlou just to come and give us this crap. No respect for the characters we love and the story has no sense. The end is not what we “worked” so much during all the hours we spent here.
Not recommended if you played the original game

Great graphics. Great atmophere. Good gameplay.

Sadly is a narrative driven game with very questionable narrative choices. Lost my interest on keep playing it halfway the game because I did not even care about whats happening. Was a bold move but did not pay off, at least if you loved the first one in my opinion. You just can't force people to feel empathy. Get it on discount if you want

Game story is terrible, best known game for its storytelling and it’s complete failure, they tried smth different turned out garbage, main character death is forced and done for shock value, ending is bad, for new playable character lack of sympathy, Ellie’s love story is not shown much, would be great if it was more, feels like lacking chemistry between her and Dina. Joel gone as a protector and Ellie growing up its missing last of us 1 formula, which was loved because of that by millions of people around the world, u sympathize characters and relationship development is beautifully done, this whole dynamic is lost here. I understand if main character has to go but like that, its BS, treated Joel like crap and it happens literally in first 2 hours of the game, so early and then u play after that 20 hours, wooow, forcing yourself playing as Joel’s killer Abby and trying to sympathize her, nobody cares. A great example how beloved character goes away is in Walking Dead season one, where Lee dies by the end of the game defending Clementine, thats a great way to go, but here its delivered stupidly for shock value and doesn’t make sense. Lot of inconsistencies Joel and Tommy being portrayed as dumb bricks giving there names and surrounding themselves with complete strangers locked in room, that would never happen, knowing from last of us 1 Joel having all those survival skills, he would never put himself in that kinda situation. Ellie’s vengeance road is what makes u play game but before ending which sucks, all characters u kill no back-story, completely forgettable, and story as a whole garbage, but hey what i know, to appreciate the game u need to have high iq to understand its themes and messages lol
only good thing about the game is Joel and Ellie flashbacks, the graphics itself best Naughty Dog done, world around and improved gameplay elements.

Por eso le doy un 5, el gameplay es muy bueno aunque más variedad de puzzles se hecha en falta pero arruinaron la trama.

All the major plot-points in the previous game has been abandoned and now the game is nothing like the previous one, but rather a festival of forced content.

A história é ruim e cheia de furos. O jogo só tem gráficos e jogabilidade boa. Sinceramente não sei como ganhou o GOTY, não merecia nem ser cogitado a GOTY.

Atmosphere, sound, ultra violence and gore, environment design all are top notch outstanding! Story, character development and their actions, repetitive animations, no noticable improvement on ai are absolute let down. As soon as I saw the credits immediately unninstalled and next day went to cash in the disc. Now im doing my third play through of the first part. 1) I found it easy to become invested in Ellie’s new story, and the connections she has with Dina, Jesse, Tommy & Joel are very believable & down to earth.
    2) I thought the the final showdown between Ellie & Abby was done brilliantly; I never thought that I would be desperately pleading in my head with Ellie not to kill Abby.
    3) The gameplay mechanics are simply a joy to experience. Ellie & Abby feel so grounded and real, and each action carries its own weight that you have to weigh up in tense situations.
    4) The environments are utterly breathtaking. Every direction you look at almost any point in the game presents you with a frame that could easily be mistaken for official artwork. The environmental storytelling and atmosphere is a whole other element of the game to get lost in.
    5) Facial expressions in this game are mind-blowing. These are perhaps the most expressive and emotive characters I have ever seen in a video game.
    6) Character animations do a great job at making you believe that you are interacting with a world of real people; each button press and flick of the analog stick feel weighty and real.
    7) The soundtrack is phenomenal; from moments of tranquility to tense combat, I often found myself taking a moment to appreciate the score.
    8) Ellie’s descent into obsessive rage is an uncomfortable but believable reaction to her experience. She is possibly suffering from PTSD and I think it is refreshing to see the game explore less savoury weaknesses of characters we love without going too far down the “Luke Skywalker Treatment” road. I thought this was a realistic and interesting balance.

    Cons

    1) I really disagree with Naughty Dog’s decision to leave out the fact that you don’t play as Ellie for half of the game. In fact, in previews & reviews it is often said “when you are playing as Ellie...” with never so much as a hint that there are multiple playable characters in the game. The moment you first play as Abby in ‘Seattle Day One’ is not important or profound or an “OMG” surprise, so I feel like it was deceptive to leave this information out of the marketing.
    2) This game introduces lots of new characters and lots of new relationships which feel much shallower than the original. Instead of further exploring the art of developing a small amount of deeply personal relationships, Naughty Dog has clearly made a conscious decision to follow a large amount of shallow relationships, but we don’t spend enough time with them to fully appreciate them.
    3) There were times where I could really “feel” that the game was trying to make me “feel” a certain way, which completely broke the immersion for me. For example; extremely sad & emotional music would play at a certain point during a cutscene at a moment which just felt completely wrong - the beauty of previous Naughty Dog games is that I would experience emotions for characters without even realising. It is sad to see that magic lost at times.
    4) The characters in this game are simply not up to par of what I have come to expect from Naughty Dog. In the past, I have been convinced that they have mastered the art of crafting ‘likeable’ characters, but I felt like a lot of the side characters in Abby’s storyline in particular (and even Abby herself at times) were pretty dull, forgettable and annoying.
    5) I felt like Joel’s death was extremely abrupt, and we were not given enough time to digest what had just happened or even sit with Ellie as she processed what had happened. I feel like the now infamous golf-club-execution scene also lost some of its weight because it wasn’t made 100% clear that Joel had actually died until we see a shot of his gravestone.
    6) The whole story in Seattle was enabled by Tommy seeing a ‘WLF’ badge at some point during Joel’s execution. It felt cheap that we immediately find out who killed Joel and where they live because of some convenient piece of information provided by another character; would it not have added more weight to spend some time with Ellie desperately trying to figure out who did it and tracking them down?
    7) The fact that Dina agreed to join Ellie on her murderous assassin rampage mission to a dangerous city miles from Jackson when she knew that she was pregnant is an example of “The Last Jedi Syndrome”; characters finding themselves in terrible situations not because of circumstance or defeat, but simply because they are stupid.
    8) Abby’s plentiful non-combat “story” missions bored me to tears. They do a good job at filling in some backstory, but they felt like the equivalent of the Walking Dead episode where Daryl and Beth just talk in a cabin for an hour and get attacked at the end - boring and unnecessary.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
