    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll preface this review by saying the first instalment of The last of Us is one of my favourite games and that Naughty Dog are my favourite developer, so I was eagerly awaiting the release of part 2 since its announcement. I didn't have much in the way of expectations or preconceptions of what the game would be, other than that it would continue Ellie's story (since this is what we were told to expect) and we would experience her character growing and developing. Unfortunately what I experienced was a poorly constructed story filled with plot holes and little to no major character development.

    While I didn't care much for how they killed Joel off, I accepted it and thought okay, his death is a device to fuel the narrative and I was looking forward to continuing the game. Over the next few hours playing through Ellie's portion of the game I enjoyed the gameplay, but still found myself struggling to feel invested in the plot and the lack of character development was disappointing. I feel like I liked Dina and Jesse just because Ellie liked them, rather than because the plot showed me any reasons to feel fond of them.

    When it came to playing as Abby I found myself asking out loud why I was having to play as her continually until I realised I was going to be playing her story for quite some portion of the game. Initially I objectively did not like her, and by the end of her part of the game, I still did not like her. I found myself rushing through this part of the game (which arguably made combat parts of the gameplay more fun) because I was simply not enjoying it. I found it so hard to feel invested in her character and therefore was not incentivised to continue. When I died as Ellie I always felt some kind of reaction but dying as Abbie could not have bothered me less. Sometimes dying was more satisfying than continuing with the story. I realise that the story was designed to draw parallels between the 2 protagonists and try to make us feel empathy towards Abby but it just did not work for me. Although I did enjoy some parts of the plot surrounding Lev's story, even though the dynamic between him and Abby felt like a watered down copy of Joel and Ellie.

    After a couple of days to reflect on it, I think the ending is okay it its own right. Though unsatisfying, and convoluted with a lot of symbology that would have been better spread more evenly throughout the game, I understand it. It is a bleak conclusion and not one I feel strongly for either way but it was needed. I remember playing through the chapter where we first see Ellie and Dina at their farm and thinking this looks absolutely stunning, but the story up until now has been virtually redundant. If none of the events from the point where Joel is killed transpired Dina would still be pregnant, she would still have her baby, her and Ellie would likely have ended up together since their relationship was going that way anyway - the only differences would be that they would still be living at Jackson and Joel and Jesse would still be alive. Neither Ellie nor Dina's character seemed developed through the events in Seattle. This feeling of redundancy left me massively unsatisfied.

    To conclude, the gameplay and level building are exemplary but it is a poorly paced and written game that failed to make me truly care for any of the new characters, and sucked the charm out of those the original made me love. This game said too much and not enough all at the same time. I can say with genuine sadness that I did not enjoy The Last of Us Part 2, which I wanted to love so badly. It's the only game of this console generation that I've personally played that I can say I've honestly found to be an unpleasant experience. So much so that I felt the need to create a Metacritic account just to write this review.

    Я вообще не понял, как можно было бросить жизнь, которую ты типа выбрал, чтобы успокоиться, а потом такой, нет, я всё же отомщу, а потом приходишь и такой ну ладно, не так уж сильно я и хотела. Типа пройти сотни километров это шуточки и сме*уюточки? Какого хрена Томми пришёл и позвал мстить, а в конце где он был? Даже если бы ее убила не она, а он, то я бы хотя бы был удовлетворен тем, что эти люди достигли цели, и стали теми самыми монстрами окончательно. Но нет, игра такая, мы хотели показать вам месть, но все люди хорошие. Вы хотели показать каков жесток мир, но не показали. В мире как раз так и человек бы нихуя никогда не понял бы и убил бы во что бы ни стало. Тем более когда ты в конце сделал решение прийти и добить человека и пройти 1000 миллион километров матье го.
    Зачем вы мне дали играть за Эбби два миллиарда часов? Зачем? одного часа геймлея хватило мне, чтобы понять её ситуацию и принять. Но нет, нахуй никому ненужных и не раскрытых персонажей вы вводили и убивали, типа я должен был посочувствовать. Нет, это так не работает.
    Если бы не было первой части игры, вы бы могли сделать из второй части хоть что-то. Но сперва дать персонажей, и дать полюбить их. А потом убить его, а потом попытаться перенять одеяло полностью на сторону Ебби и ее друзей, это вообще не работает.
    А потом ещё и дать своими же руками убить Елли и её друзей? Вы там вообще с ума посходили? Мозг человека не так работает. Да это серая мораль, но когда ты со стороны наблюдаешь на две стороны. А не так, что ты сам участвуешь в битве, в которой играешь за обе стороны. Это играть в шахматы одному за две стороны. Это же бред. Я могу понимать двух игроков, если они играют в шахматы и я смотрю на них, я пойму и выигравшего и посочувствую проигравшему. Ну а тут я играю сам с собой в шахматы, а потом что? я должен понять и посочувствовать себе же причем за обе стороны? это вообще как?

    Graphics / Lighting / Effects / Animation -> 9.5 out of 10.0
    The graphics are beautiful. The landscape and the surroundings look astonishing. The lighting especially inside of buildings with direct light, indirect light and defuse light is one of the greatest I've ever seen in a video game up until today.
    Sound / Sound effects / Music / Voice Acting -> 9.5 out of 10.0
    The sound and the sound effects are on top f.e. the sound of the rainfall is impressive or the sound of the wind howling through the tall grass. Yes, you can actually hear that. The music, the score is beautiful and emotional and adds perfect to the visuals.
    The Voice Actors have given their best to make their characters come to live on screen.

    Game play / Mechanics / Controls / AI -> 6.5 out 10.0
    The game play and the mechanics haven't changed a lot from the first part and they still feel like 2013 and a bit outdated in 2020. There a more possibilities for modifying the weapons and the abilities of the character you are controlling/playing. But that also means that the flaws of the first part have found there way into the TLuO2. The gun play still feels a little bit clunky and so the spare ammunition is sometimes wasted in a game where every bullet counts. Sometimes the camera positioning isn't quite right, so that suddenly a clicker instantly takes you out unseen and in a stealth section your character may act uncorresponding or in an unintended fashion, because some buttons are tied to different functions simultaniously. Apropos stealth; the enemy AI is sometimes shifting between good to dump like a rock. You can flank nearly every enemy even groups in in a circular motion, so you can kill everyone or everything off from the end of that chain.

    Story / Storytelling and Pacing / Characters and Character development -> 1.0 out of 10.0
    The problem with TLoU2 is the story and the way it is presented. TLoU1 was a story and character driven game. That was the reason the fans loved that game so much. We played 90 % of that game as Joel and 10 % of the main story as Ellie. Then there was the DLC, which focused more on Ellie and her "coming out" and her relationship to Riley. So the fans of the first game cannot all be homophobic as Neil **** now tries to imply upon the ongoing so called "Review Bombing", which by the way happens in both directions.

    The new characters are not introduced in a believable way.
    The known characters from TLoU1 act completely out of place -> the way Joel dies. Ellies reaction to being lied at by Joel about Salt Lake City.
    The Story is not believable. -> Abby spares Ellie and Tommy on two, different accounts.

    They way the story is presented is awful. All the flashbacks are destroying the pacing of the story and the game play as well. Sometimes through all these flashback you even don't know in which timeline you are right now, when you continue to play. These time lapses and flashbacks are also interfering with any character development or introduction in this game, so that every identification or understanding of any of these new characters and there motivation is nearly impossible or not believable. And unfortunately the very good voice acting cannot safe that.

    There is no build up in this story to a real climatic moment, only shocking moments of violence, which are also presented in an awful way, so that it seams, you are watching a low budget action- or horror movie.
    A movie with a completely unknown cast and the one actor you know has only a minute of screen time, just enough to push the sales, because you can put him in the trailers and in the marketing like Robert Englund's appearences in so many low-budget horror flics.

    In addition some of these violent scenes and acts are forced upon the player. The player has no choice, because all this is scripted and even worse, some of this scenes are intended to manipulate the player in the way he sees and feels for these characters. That is a real cheap trick by the way.

    The linear, scripted and time lapsed broken story and gameplay is in my opinion a complete failure and is outdated in 2020. Naughty Dog has proven that they are not able to deliver a game in which you as a player have the choice, what you want to expercience. They are only capable of forcing you to play what they want you to play in a linear, restricted fashion.

    And I am absolutely sure, if Naughty Dog would have given the player the choice and freedom to play Abby or not, most of the players would have disagreed and skipped this possability, because of the way her character was introduced or “injected” here in this way.

    Here is the real Final score -> only 5.0 out of 10.0

WHY!!!! killing Joel is like killing john wick's dog, at least to us who played the first game, I'm really disappointed and probably wouldn't play a sequel, you could've just gave us what we wanted and then add a sequel about the Scars (Yara or lev story with prophet of sepharites) that would be cool, but now my only assumption of continuing the story is if SCARS raid Jackson and killed tommy and Dina for real, then Ellie and her son can take revenge, that would be pretty solid though. don't get me wrong, graphics and game-play are a 10/10, story is a 3 (being humble), i hope you think about that in your future games Naughty dog to avoid losing more fan-base and regret. gave it overall a 2. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is beautiful, but the story decisions are horrid. Probably the worst story driven game I have played in a very long time. The lack of consciousness by the development team is shocking. Instead of playing a story driven game, you play a vendetta and revenge story line that lacks because of the characters surrounding you. Then, you make me not able to finish that vendetta... You ruin both characters from the first game in this disgrace of a sequel. Atrocious decisions by this development team who honesty should not work on another Naughty Dog story game ever again. The gameplay isn’t the best because you’re searching for collectibles more than playing the story most of the time which is probably why they put so many of them in the game to distract you from probably the worst writing and development of a 2nd installment ever. This game should serve as a catalyst on how to ruin one of the best video games ever made. I am honestly shocked Sony gave the green light to release this after someone read this horrible script and plot. So many flaws and horrible decisions you’ll be baffled. There were so many ways they could have built a fantastic second installment, but this game falls flat within the first hour. If you want to play a great game and don’t care about getting mad about the story it’s a good buy. The game is average and worth a buy once it’s on sale. If you’re going to get upset and break a controller, you can surmise what they did and watch the 25+ hour waste of time on YouTube or Twitch.

Ok if we talk about the graphics of this games, we need to agree on this, they are gorgeous, the gameplay was ok, it wasn't great but it had some upgrades and smoothness while in combat, but what hits down this game into a six, is the story, it has so many plot holes and some characteristics that characters own that have nothing to do with their characteristics in the first game. For example, Joel, Joel in the first game is an unconfident man he does not trust anyone in the first game, he literally runs over a guy because he did not trust that he was injured and he knows it was an ambush, so now tell me where are this characteristic, Joel has, he literally just trust a group of guys, tells them their real names, where they live, and for worst they tell this group of not known people if they wanted they could go get supplies in their town, that just not characteristics of Joel and Tommy they would not trust anyone. It's just stupid, and finally the ending, wow that ending could not be more trash, just very poor storytelling. What a mess. Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After 7 years of anticipation, I admit I was abit disappointed with what Naughty Dog brought to the table with TLoU II. It’s certainly not a 3.5 given by gamers, but it’s definitely not a 10/10 masterpiece, which is really sad to say because it had all the potential for a real game of the year contender. The backdrop for TLOU was refreshing, it brought so much content to the table & the characters were so relatable because they were so.. real with their personal struggles. I felt that naughty dog could have built on what happened after the ending instead of fast forwarding 5 years, dropping us randomly into Seattle. What went right: Graphics - I’m honestly impressed with what ND managed to pull off given how old the PS4 console is. Lighting was amazing especially in the forested areas, models were crisp, detailed and just a beauty to look at. Gameplay - improving upon the mechanics of TLOU, I find the combat system much more fluid and so satisfying every time I pop the head off the infected. Crafting & upgrading your character hasn’t really changed fundamentally, you’ll still be going around scrounging for supplies. Every gun feels punchy, weighty and powerful. Even playing on hard, the difficulty is just right without you feeling too over or under powered. There’s a bit more puzzles to solve now to catch a break every now and then. Character animations are extremely life like and it’s just a joy to play and appreciate the motion capture work ND has put into. Environment - Seattle is sprawling with Wild life, places to explore and new areas to discover. There’s so many more buildings, rooms & creepy alleys to explore with the power of the PS4. The city really feels alive as you can hear the environmental sounds around you as you explore it. What went wrong: Story, story, story - sadly ND seemed to have lost the whole point of TLOU franchise. The lack of a solid story made this into some generic action adventure game. What made TLOU a lasting impression even till this date wasn’t the gameplay but the story telling. Every character was real, with their history, motivations and personality. In contrast every character, even Ellie was bland, forgettable and just plain boring to look at. There’s nothing about them, why are they doing certain things, how did they get here, or what’s their part in this game. You could remove 90% of the characters’ dialogue and it will still be exactly the same action adventure game. Because everyone is just shooting and killing first and asking questions later! See someone, “oh I don’t know maybe I’ll just kill that person first and then figure out what’s going on on my own by scrounging up notes lying around everywhere” (Except the flashbacks, that was really extremely well done)
    “That” scene that everyone hated was really just there for shock value, I felt that it had no purpose and meaning because nothing links up.
    Even halfway through the game I still don’t know why is everyone doing what they are doing, why is everyone just killing everyone and not asking questions? Was the whole point of playing another perspective just to make us empathise and sympathetic to their cause? It was really quite badly executed. Instead of feeling for them, that segment was excruciating, and just painful to play. And I was just dragging my feet to complete it. Seriously ND, you can’t just expect us to sympathise with anyone you make us play. If your goal was to make the single most hated character in video gaming industry, this takes the cake. Social norms - there’s really no need to be an “inclusive” game by incorporating certain sexual orientation in life just to appease everyone. It’s painful to watch, full of cringe and just feels so... forced. There’s no history between them as far as I can tell so I don’t get why ND has to put it in. You don’t need to conform to society and please SJWs just because certain group calls for it. Adding it doesn’t automatically make it acceptable. Summary
    I’d wish you would have focused more on the story and developed each character properly. And for the life of me, please remove all these unnecessary gameplay about another person, we really don’t care. If you bought God of War you’d expect to play as Kratos, and not some random creep right? Same logic. Without a strong story every aspect of the game no matter how strong just falls apart and becomes just another generic action game. There’s nothing to gel these pieces together. I look forward to another game in the next few years, ND.
