This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start this off by saying that I wanted to like this game. I was anticipating its release for the longest time. When it was postponed the second time, I was beyond sad. And when we got a new date, I was so damn happy. I wouldn't shut up about it when speaking to my friends, I kept saying that it would be the greatest game ever made by any company. When I got my hands on it, I was terrified that bad things would happen. I was unaware at the start that we would be lied to by the developers. How were we lied to, you ask? Well, in the trailers we were led to believe that we would be on an adventure with Joel again after all of the years of waiting. We would be getting revenge together for a common disturbance that needed to be rectified. But no, instead of Joel and Ellie speaking in the present, we only see flashbacks. In the teaser trailer, Joel grabs Ellie from behind and when she asks what he's doing here, he says "You think I'd let you do this on your own?" This is one of the main reasons I bought the game in the first place. After his death, we see this same scene again except Jesse is the one grabbing her from behind and saying the SAME EXACT LINE that Joel did in the teaser. In the "screenshots" released, Joel and Ellie's present models were used to make us think we'd be on an adventure with him again. But no, in the game the scenes were just flashbacks. What they did to deceive us, in my opinion, is unfair and heartbreaking. I feel utterly betrayed.

The story itself is built horribly, making us sympathize with the one who killed Joel. They even force us to play as her. IF we didn't have to play as her, if we had to find her and kill her, the game would've received a way different rating. The story still wouldn't be good, as I personally would've done Joel's death way different. Abby's character and motive to hurt Joel would've been more demented, instead of killing him.. kill someone he loves in retaliation. Say... Tommy. His character at the end of the game was a broken man anyway. If Jackson ever got compromised, he'd surely die with that horrible limp and impaired vision.

Ellie's decision to let Abby go in the first place is completely pointless. Many love to raise the argument that she did it because "revenge isn't the answer". Well, if that's the case, how do you justify what Abby did? She murdered Joel. Plain and simple. Joel did what he did out of love for Ellie, and Abby did what she did out of love for her own father. Why is it bad that Ellie would want the same thing?

"I'm gonna find . . . and I'm gonna kill . . . EVERY. LAST. ONE OF THEM. Except for the one who killed my father figure. She gets to live!"

Makes absolutely no sense to me.

    Here's my final thoughts:

If you leave a character with less than they started with, or with nothing; then you went absolutely nowhere. You took one step forwards, then two steps back. Ellie lost Joel, her stable relationship with Tommy, Dina and the baby, and her ability to play guitar(which was her only way that she could feel connected to Joel). Having her walk off into the woods makes me thing that Naughty Dog is considering a third game, and I hope they see this.

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE A THIRD. Your writers have already destroyed this story.

To the actors, I have nothing against you. I'm assuming you had no say in anything.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved TLOU 1. I bought this game the day it came out and avoided all spoilers and leaks beforehand.
Honesly, I did not like this game at all.
The story is literally pointless and absolutely depressing. Joel's death was poorly written. Joel survived so much hell in the first game. He was impaled and survived. He spent months being bed ridden. He fought so many bandits, fireflies, and infected and overcame all of it. All that feels so pointless if he just dies so easily two hours into the sequel. His fight for survival in the first game is cheapened since we see him die so easily after waltzing into the hand of the enemy.

Abby is mean and unpleasant. She has sex with Owen and acts like she doesn't care the next day even though he was in a relationship with a pregnant woman. I get they try to make us empathize with her. But honestly anyone with half a brain can understand why she did what she did. Joel killed her dad and dismantled the fireflies. We get it. We don’t have to play as her for half the game to understand that. Especially if she’s gonna be so coarse and bland the whole time. Abby has no chemistry with her friends (except Manny). She treats Owen like crap, she disrespects Mel's relationship, and once Manny is shot in the face she doesn't take even half a second to mention him or show some grief. Playing as her did not make me feel any worse for killing them.

Her arc of helping Yara is pointless because Yara dies an hour after you go through all that freaking trouble to cut her infected arm off. I did not want to play as Abby for half the game. I did not want to fight Ellie as Abby. I tried making Ellie kill me to see if that was an option but it was not. Playing as Abby was so draining and it made the pacing bad. I thought this game was Ellie's story! I did not sign up to play as a character with no personality who's story amounts to nothing. The whole California part is even more pointless. If Ellie did not go, Abby would have died at the Rattler base and Ellie would have kept her family and fingers. Her trip there makes no sense and is very stupid. And to make matters worse, they make you play guitar with missing fingers and it is literally so disturbing. Almost as disturbing as Abby's awful sex scene.

Also, I did not appreciate how Ellie and Dina have sex the day after their first freaking kiss. Who does that? Ellie is so madly in love with her but we don't have any reason to like her that much.
Jesse was the only character I liked aside from Joel and he is shot in the face out of nowhere and never spoken about again outside of some dumb collectible note. They just had to get rid of him so he could be out of the picture once the baby was born. He ends up just being a sperm donor. Which sucks because he was so nice to Ellie and was not bitter about her moving on with Dina.

I am trying to be fair by giving it a 5 because everything was good aside from the story. But the story is the most important thing in a game like this. By the end of the game I felt utterly unfulfilled. I didn't even like Ellie anymore. I wish it TLOU 2 did not exist and that we stopped after the first installment. So many people die in this game and it all amounts to nothing. This story amounts to nothing. Joel dies, Jesse dies, Tommy is divorced and crippled, Ellie is alone and missing fingers, and for what? What was the point of this? Honestly this is a demented, twisted, slaughter fest of a game and it really did not tell a compelling enough story to warrant being so dark.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If this had been multiplayer only I would have scored it much higher. Visually the game is gorgeous, I loved the gameplay from the first game and this one is very similar. I don't agree with some that it needs to evolve so much when you have dozens of first person shooters that use the same engines and don't feel very different to each other, there was only one Last of Us. If you enjoyed the gameplay mechanics from the first one there's no reason you wont enjoy this one too, I personally love the gameplay mechanics.
Unfortunately its impossible to play it and avoid the story, and if you are also a big fan of the first one you will quite likely be hugely disappointed by the direction they take in the second one. It feels very jolting which although I'm sure was their intention, it just takes too much away from the first one and doesn't build on it in a meaningful way. Their treatment of the characters we grew to love in my opinion is just horrible. The inclusion of representation (gender identity politics) feels forced and transparent which comes across both lecturey and unnecessary in a post apocolyptic world whereas games like Dragonage Inquisition were able to include it without having that effect. It also felt a bit immersion breaking to play as a female character that was obviously on steroids with hulking arms and legs - where does she get access to that much quality and quantity of food along with steroids in a post apocolyptic world where people are just trying to survive (the steroid physique is not an exaggeration). To be clear I have no issue playing as female characters and where choice is given I usually do just that, I chose to play as Kassandra on AC Odyssey.

As far as Last of Us gameplay goes again I feel that has remained in tact and improved, visually, functionally and shouldn't disappoint anyone familiar with and fond of the first, I would definitely buy a separate multiplayer if that's the route they choose to take.

So I had hopes the narrative wasn’t that bad after hearing everything, I did stay as spoiler free as I could until I finished the game, but wtf naught dog. Killing the main character from the previous game to make a revenge story was a good idea, however the execution was hot garbage. We go through all the work to take revenge as Ellie to then play as Abby the villain to make us see her side and, I’m assuming, make us feel for her. Which in someways it did for me, but then you make us continue to play as Abby when we confront Ellie forcing us to beat a beloved character which was a BOLD decision that backfired immensely with everyone’s feedback being the clear example that it was a garbage decision. Everything up to that point was, in my opinion, still leading up to be a fantastic game. But the decision, again, to make us fight Ellie and win, is when you lost me. Have you had a switch back to playing Aly when we got to that confrontation making us beat Abby, I would’ve been fine with rest Love it. If you want to still kill Jesse do it, mortality wound Tommy or kill him I wouldn’t of cared as long as we got to kill Abby. Heck you could’ve even killed off Lev as they were leaving the island so you wouldn’t of had to involve him at that point. But it felt like you wanted to drag on the story from that confrontation which is a load of BS in my opinion. You should’ve ended it at that final confrontation and ended peacefully with Ellie and Dina at the farm raising JJ. That could have been at the perfect finish for this game but you squandered it. Do you let Abby win by making us beat Ellie. You then make us play as Ellie again to go and kill Abby which when we get that chance we let her go, then for more insult to injury when we get back to the farm Dina is gone and we don’t even know if Ellie finds Fina and they potentially get back together raising JJ, you just end it there. Honestly, I think if you chose to ha e had Lev died while being strung up on the beach with Abby thus giving Ellie essentially a mercy killing but still a revenge killing would have been better then what you decided. But instead you choose to make us go through all that to forgive Abby through PTSD on Ellies side and when we get back to the farm we find out Ellie has basically lost she loved even her ability to play the guitar correctly which is minor I know but still. I don’t even wanna play new game+ because there’s no satisfaction at the end. It just sucks because it feels like you had a very great story building up to the moment the Ellie and Abby confrontation happens, but when it does it seems you just took a dump on the story. The game itself is beautiful I appreciate the gameplay and how it is a even though it’s very repetitive, it just sucks that when you get that climax it feels like you’re falling down Mount Everest with no chance of stopping until you hit the bottom. I doubt it will even happen but I feel like you need to pull a BioWare and fix the ending like they did for Mass Effect 3 even if it’s just an alternate ending like choosing to play as either Abby or Ellie at the climax. Or just don’t make us play as Abby, the villain, and let us play as Ellie and beat Abby.

I was really excited to play this game, I’ve been waiting for it for the longest and it just didn’t live up to the hype. The LOU1 should’ve been left alone. Really didn’t like playing have the game as Abby after what she did. That was really disappointing. Also I understand the explanation of the Ending but it’s just frustrating. Idk why the game creators didn’t after more input from the diehard fans. I’m just so disappointed overall. Besides that the game play is really good and the graphics are great. I enjoyed the fighting scenes. For that I give it a 5 out of 10. I wish I knew how it would play out before hand so I wouldn’t have spend the money to get it. Highly recommend waiting for used or once it goes on a deep discount to get it if interested. Expand

This is one of the stupidest narratives I've ever encountered in gaming and the way they pull it off makes it even dumber. The game thinks its smart and hypocrites might think it is.(Like its totally cool to kill hundreds of ppl in this game in some of the goriest ways imaginable because this game is against violence.) But in reality it is a tribute to violence, a wolf in sheeps clothing.

The graphics, animation, sound and acting is amazing though. So it's like Speed Racer or Tron:Legacy. A visually stunning product without any merit to its core.

But you can certainly enjoy the game if you dont give a **** about in game characters and the stupid narrative pushed on you and you embrace your inner psycho.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us part 2 is the most disappointing game I have ever played. Now I’m not calling this a garbage game in total. This game just has some of the WORST story decisions I have ever seen. Now I know I’m missing a lot of key characters and moments but I’m covering the standout moments. Let’s start from the beginning. The whole game is fine up until you start playing as Abby, a brand new character we have never seen before. It’s only for about 40 mins in the first 3 hours of the game but still. Then around that 2-3 mark you see that Abby and her crew kill Joel. This is the worst part of the entire game. To kill off a character in that type of way with that lazy of writing is pathetic. After Ellie witnesses this, she goes of to Seattle. For the next 10 hours you go on a journey to hunt down each person that was involved in the murder of Joel. I really enjoyed this part of the game, and it is by far my favorite part of the entire game. Once Ellie kills two of the remaining people that were involved with Joel, she heads back to the theater which she is staying. When she gets there with Tommy, Dina and Jesse are waiting there. Jesse and Ellie talk and then Abby enters the building and kills Jessie and badly hurts Tommy. This is another stupid part of this game. Ellie could have killed Abby right then and there but no, the story has to go on, that’s something that doesn’t stop in this game. So then we play as Abby for next 10 hours of the game and witness her side and why she wanted to kill Joel. I’m not even going to talk about this part. This was not the Last of us. It was like a DLC. After we play as Abby we beat the **** out of Ellie for no reason and just leave. Months have passed and Ellie has a family with Dina. Tommy shows up and tells Ellie where Abby is. She goes after her only to not ****ing kill her. Ellie spends this ENTIRE GAME killing ****ing everything just to not kill Abby???? Like why? Basically the ending is that Ellie returns home and Dinas gone. She lost two fingers in the fight with Abby and now can’t play the guitar, the only thing left that Joel could pass on. That’s it. The end. So Abby wins and Ellie lost. Now the flashbacks were ****ing amazing. Loved each one. The gameplay and the visuals were truly amazing. To sum it up, gameplay 10/10. Visuals 10/10. Story 3/10. It’s not as bad as people say it but the story really drags it down like A LOT. Finial rating for The Last of Us Part II is a 5/10. Expand

I specifically created this account JUST to rate this game!!! No, I am not a 'review-bomber' or Russian bot, contrary to what the gaming press or ND may tell you lol.

I've been a gamer for over half my life and The Last of Us 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. This game is such a radically different departure from what made that game great, and not in a good way.

For one, the narrative is SUPER disjointed. There are time jumps all over the place and we are introduced to many, many new characters that we are supposed to care about, but there is very little to no development whatsoever invested in building these characters up. It's almost as if they are only there to drive the story forward.

Neil and Gross, it seems, have deliberately shoe-horned their own ideologies into this, and it shows. Big time.

Let me say, I do not mind playing as a female character. I don't even mind that the character is homosexual. Fine. But there is a very clear motivation in this game's story (without getting too much into spoilers), to present and almost force, social justice issues. It's uncomfortable, unrealistic, and comes off as straight up silly considering this is supposed to be taking place in a future apocalypse!!!

The game's presentation is really its only redeeming quality. The graphics, sound, gameplay, music, and voice acting are all top notch. However, this is weighed down significantly by the weak narrative and extended gameplay sections that feel forced and bloated.

I honestly do not know how so many critics gave this a glowing 10 out of 10. To me, that is just mind boggling. Clearly, there is a bias and I believe it involves a combination of things- access media (companies wanting to be on good terms with Sony), and the political motivations shared by the overall gaming press that are highly skewed and misrepresentative of gamers as a whole

It sparked tons of bad controversy and hate on the Internet. There is no likable characters, everyone seems to be purposefully uglified and twisted to amplify the uncanny tone of the game.
On the other hand, the game is a technical marvel, a milestone in visual and gameplay design, which kept me going until the very end and wanting more. Amazing lighting, atmosphere and environmental design. Attention to details is phenomenal. Combat is so perfect that playing anything else after this feels like kinder garden. Many thanks to people at Naughty Dog who actually work on creating quality content and push game industry further and further, despite the allegedly toxic working conditions and lunatic supervisors

Simply put: We were expecting an amazing story and got a really bad story.

Graphically the game is one of the most appealing in the PS4. The animations are smooth and the integration with cutscenes is also phenomenal. The sound mixing is also perfect. I didn't found any bug or glitch in my playthrough.

The main problem is the story:

The first game had great graphics and an amazingly strong story: it was fairly predictable and simple in the end but they managed to delivered us some unforgettable moments between the characters and the harsh reality of a post-apocalyptic world. There was no plot-holes nor moments where any action by the characters wasn't justified.

In Part II, they forgot all of it. Too many unjustified actions by the main characters: they behave very differently compared to the first game, even "experienced" characters that were present in the first game seem to know nothing about how the Last of Us world works (rational vs emotional). Lots of plot-holes and the dangers presented in the post-apocalyptic world sometimes seem that they don't exist.

If I had to explain the story to someone that never heard of Last of Us I would say that the story is " a college project where 5 people wrote each part and in the end they tried to glue everything together".

Also it makes no sense for us to play at least 10 hours as the "villain" and even fight the main-character. I understood why: they wanted us to form a connection with the villain and give us the backstory and his/hers motivation. But the "villain" is a rigid and unempathetic character. Too stiff and afraid of everything. Like many people I was unable to have any affection.

It was so bad. It's like you picking up your favorite team in FIFA and the game forces you to play against it.

Also the gameplay is 75% equal to the first game. The default difficulty is too easy imo. You'll get bored fast especially if you played the first game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first time ever I review a game , but this was worth it , first of all I am a hardcore fan of tlo 1 , I completed like 6 times , so I was beyond hyped of this game , I didn't get any spoilers I mean I kinda know Joel would die , but It was pretty obvious why would ellie want revenge rather than that , well I'm going to the point the game eat first is brilliant I mean some of the writing was wrong like why would Joel accept going why abby , nuyt ok , it was necessary to make us hate so much abbys character, but the second half of the game is where I started hating this game I mean why the game forces us to play someone we hate so much , and like 10 hours! Or more I was so stressed playing abbys part that I wanted to finished asap I mean there's nothing interesting told besides that scene where joel kill his father , and the thing that broke me up , is that no one the things you have done in the game matters , that pig kills ellie's most loved one and let her go alive after cutting his fingers this was the most unsatisfying ending I've experienced, I want a doc where you can kill abby , I there's a tlo3 with abby I would never buy that **** Expand

it’s just boring to play this game, the story is stretched and this is the main problem, well, this LGBT propaganda during the apocalypse is out of place at all (calling a person a chauvinist at such a time is like telling a dog that she is a dog), but 5 points for the graphics and stylization of the locations, only because of them I suffered this game until the end

Mega dojrzała i świetnie poprowadzona fabuła pokazująca nam że każdy kij ma dwa końce, niesamowita brutalna rozgrywka, dobry model skradania i strzelania

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
