This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I respect Naughty Dog vision, I was impressed with the game engine and the world design. I love all the flashback and interaction between Joel and Ellie, because these are the characters we've been through in the first game, we already built a connection with these two characters. But at the mid of the game when the game force us to play as Abby. I stopped playing, because I couldn't get through it. I get what the game try to do here, they want us to see things in different angle, put us in her shoes. But I really can't, all I can see is these people done horrible things to someone we love, at that point, I already checked out of the game, I couldn't listen to their dialogue. I think Naughty Dog expect too much of me, sorry, I cannot be that bigger person. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the end credits now, first off all the people giving it 1/10 and 0/10 actually play the game lmao, it’s not that bad. No I am not a fan of Joel’s death, it feels so out of character for him to give his name out and trust strangers compared to the first game. Graphics are amazing and I really enjoyed the gameplay, voice acting was alright don’t believe people saying it was terrible when it wasn’t. How ever I did enjoy seeing abbys story arc surprise surprise(sorry I have an open mind). BUT when playing as Abby in the boss fight against Ellie, wtaf??!??! you can’t expect us to want to fight a character we love, so many time during the fight I wouldn’t press square during the QuickTime events because I didn’t want to do anything to Ellie, nor did I try to fight her, I got Abby shot multiple times before realising I have to fight her. Alright I could go on forever about what this game does right and wrong a lot more wrong but this was going to be a 7/10 for me, until the ending, the flashback scene was nice made my eyes tear up but then it cuts back and j ends w her walking off, are ye serious?!? Would have been way better if another 10-20 min was added to see the aftermath of her returning to dina, tommy, JJ and all that but no, hence the 5/10. Would I recommend this game? Ehit’s really upto u as a person to decide but personally I would say no. final verdict- DISAPPOINTED Expand

Poor storyline: you buy the game for the characters you love and end up with Joel being slaughtered in the first hours and with being forced to play (for hours) as his murder, a character you hate. The game tries hard to push you into liking Abby, but the result is instead just annoying. Had to force myself to reach the end, which is also totally disappointing since you don’t even get the revenge you wanted.

Forced **** topics that strikes as exaggerated beyond any Suspension of disbelief. Almost all the main characters are women or asians, whic is fairly unrealistic. Even as the classical huge/strong human enemy they choose a giant fat woman.. it’s very rare to see two men talking with each other in the whole game. White males are killed and replaced with women and asian, the couple Joel + Ellie wasn’t woke enough so was replaced with Abby + Lev. Finally, not to leave any woke topic behind, we have gay characters, trans characters and so forth. Nothing against that in general, but here everything looks out of context and forced, it looks too much. Left Behind was also including such topics but not in this way and indeed got good ratings.

Honestly, even with the problems this game has, if you are able to set aside your expectations of what you wanted from the game, there is actually something here worth enjoying.

That being said, there was so much build-up and anticipation for this game (on top of it being released 7 years after the original) that there should have been much more care taken for what fans would want to see and experience, as this franchise and it's story mean so much to a great number of people.

Most would have preferred a story focusing more on characters of the first game, and this would have been the safe bet by Naughty Dog, but they chose to take the game in this direction, so we have to take the game for what it is.

If you are able to look at the game the way it is presented to us, there is a good story underneath it all. The presentation of that story leaves much to be desired, but it is still possible to accept that story as it is, and see it for what it ends up being.

The good: The graphics clearly pushed the industry forward, but I would argue that Death Stranding accomplished the same quality so I don't give it many points for being a tech demo.
The meh: Gameplay is rehashed and polished from the first game but still feels dated. The forced political choices more interested in pushing a message than creating a good game.
    The bad: I'll break this
The good: The graphics clearly pushed the industry forward, but I would argue that Death Stranding accomplished the same quality so I don't give it many points for being a tech demo.
The meh: Gameplay is rehashed and polished from the first game but still feels dated. The forced political choices more interested in pushing a message than creating a good game.
The bad: I'll break this down as best I can but TLDR the story and characters fundamentally fail on nearly every aspect. So spoilers ahead.
    1. Lets talk about the elephant in the room, Abby kills Joel within the first few hours of gameplay due to his brothers frankly ridiculous mistake of sharing his full name. This is the decades through the apocalypse survivor who wouldn't be the slightest bit cautious when he knew people were looking for him... Evidently.
    2. Shifting perspectives, after Joel is killed we eventually get to play as Abby... for ten hours... What I like many others did was run the killer right into a clicker as I'm sure many others did. Why? Because I played through an entire game that I loved as the character that Abby unceremoniously murdered. I am made to feel over time that Joel was a bad guy for dismantling the Fireflies. But issues with that.
1.1 If you listen through the first games recordings they had many other cases where they thought they could create a vaccine with. All of them were killed, none of them produced a vaccine, Ellie very well could have been killed for nothing.
1.2 Worse yet, it is impossible to create a vaccine with that small of a team in that small of a facility, on a global scale it would take 1-10 years based purely on how lucky they got.
1.3 And the final most important reason, I didn't care when I did it. I care about the little girl who Joel had been taking care of for the past couple dozen hours of my life. Do I care about the people who would just as readily shoot as help me, no.
    3. Really weird sex scene out of nowhere in the middle of the game while other Sony products are bashed for having 'sexy' outfits.
    4. The lazy attempt to make me understand Abby, the villain in my humble opinion, just by throwing me in their shoes. This is contrived to make the story complex and powerful, but instead becomes a lazy way to extend gameplay. When thinking about ways to do this better I thought of Horizon Zero Dawn, Helis's tent had the logs inside which was given a bit lazier than spreading them out to piece together over time, but it was still a way to understand someone who killed the father figure without empathizing with them. This doesn't do that, this says hey you know how Ellie is a rage ball of revenge, well here's another rage ball of revenge empathize with her over the one you spent the whole last game and the lions share of this game with.
    5. Finally the ending "Boss" fight. You play as Abby not Ellie, you are not allowed to get Abby killed. Abby almost kills Ellie's pregnant girlfriend and says good when she learns that fact. (I don't care that Ellie inadvertently killed her pregnant friend.) Then once again at the actual ending you track down Abby have her underwater about to die when suddenly, oh violence bad comes in and suddenly hey I know I've killed hundreds of people to get here but yeah lets let them go. Then they have the balls to have a cut scene with Joel just to make you really regret spending money on this tech demo written as a tumblr fanfiction trying to be deep but instead being shallow and infuriating.
This isn't undertale, this isn't dishonored, and this isn't Detroit Become Human. This isn't a pacifist game going into the issues of violence. It's a revenge game and with all the set up to this point you can't just say violence bad and end it. Kill Abby give the player that catharsis, then give them the time to reflect on it after. It would make you wonder if the revenge was worth all the bodies left behind in a world already in an apocalypse, ponder if Joel would have wanted it, and whether you can live with the emptiness it leaves behind. But instead this game left me hollow, it broke my heart not that Joel died but that he died in such a stupid way. And it destroyed me to have to watch such a great studio as Naughty Dog who created some of my favorite games, burn because of terrible writing. It's the end of an era with this game and I hope it can regain glory but for now it looks like it will go down in a whimper and I'm so disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, this is the most confusing game I've ever played, not because the story is complicated or not clear, the game simply left me not knowing what to feel, I loved some parts of it but I absolutely hated a lot also, the game play is mildly fun but it's not a huge innovation from the first game, and it isn't very diverse, but the problem of this game is not the game play, is the **** up parts of the story. The game lets Abby get away with all that she did but the main character just loses everything and just makes you feel totally hopeless in the end it's not a fitting or fair ending for Ellie because it basically reduces everything you did to nothing, even if the lesson it tries to teach is that "revenge is bad" but it does so in a way that feels so void and stupid, the game constantly expects you to feel something for the people that **** murdered Joel, and it is so absurd, I found myself laughing whenever one of Abby's friends were killed (I lol so hard when Manny gets shot). The whole Part where you control Abby could be put in a different game or a Dlc that had no connection to the main story because its so pointless when it tries to make you care about characters that you will probably hate in the first hour of the story . And if that wasn't enough then the game expects you to fight ellie using a character that don't care about, I literally let myself die to ellie several times expecting that would just trigger the end of the game but it is simply hell bent in making ellie suffer. And as if that wasn't enough the game then robs you of the choice to see Ellie's revenge through and it just forces you to forgive the girl that killed Joel and expects you to be sad about it instead of furious, they couldn't even let us have a choice and it shoves into you the "moraly correct thing to do" as if we hadn't done all this horrible **** throughout the whole game. It would be better that we forget the story of this game ever happened and just imagine a better life for the characters we grew to love in the first game, Joel and Ellie deserved better. Expand

I’ll save you 25 hours and however much money by saying revenge is bad, because that’s really all this games narrative has to say along with other basic level messaging to lecture the player, rather than immerse them in a captivating, character-building story like the first game did so well. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
