There are aspects of the game that are a 10/10 .. graphics, animations, exploration, atmosphere are all so well done and made the game bearable to play through. Unfortunately, The Last of Us is a story driven game and this story was just not very good. It felt rushed and lazily written, it was also about 5-10 hours too long. I think the story could have worked if it was written like an adult and not a 5 year old. There is too much to go into on why the story just didn't work for me, I just didn't like it. It does a major disservice to the fans who waited a long 7 years for a new adventure with their beloved characters and it's just not what we got, especially after what misleading advertisement would have told us otherwise. For the ones that loved the game that is awesome, but for the ones who feel cheated, it just is not a great game. I didn't hate the game but i would never recommend it to anyone. I think ND has lost their way and is out of touch with what the fan base wants and expects, i'll be extremely skeptical of anything else that has their name attached to it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 presents one of the most beautiful and detailed renditions of a post apocalyptic world probably in any form of media ever. The gameplay is very similar to the first game, but is expanded upon and very solid. These areas of the game are easily a 10/10 and we should appreciate the work that went into creating this world by the hard work of those at Naughty Dog despite shortcomings in the story. My biggest complaint about the story is how it retcons the original while the characters are dumbed down. For example, one of the biggest moral dilemmas in the original game was Joel’s choice to save Ellie from being killed to possibly create a cure. Audio logs in the game, however, make it clear that the chances of making a cure are bad (for context, we don’t have a cure for fungal infections in real life) and even if possible, the prospects of the Fireflies being competent enough to manufacture and distribute such a cure are even lower. The second game completely retcons this by making it seem as if a cure were guaranteed somehow, ignoring the rules and science established in the game and real world. Thus, Joel’s morally grey decision is replaced with ‘Joel take cure from world, Joel bad.’ Unfortunately, retroactively dumbing down the plot of the original game isn’t the limit of this game’s story. The story is disjointed and makes the mistake of trying to tell a simple story through complex means. The story boils down to ‘revenge bad’ but the story writers thought it necessary to introduce a new playable character and flashbacks within flashbacks to make us somehow understand why the developers made the decision to kill the most beloved character from the first game. This all fails and leaves the ending feel undercooked. I think they wanted us to feel empathy for Abby somehow but she is disliked by literally every character in the story and players irl. However, Abby’s story arch is completely asynchronous to the theme of the story and conflicts completely with the dark outcome for Ellie. I don’t know what the writers were thinking introducing a new player character. It’s been tried before in Metal Gear Solid 2&5, Halo 2&5, and if the pattern holds in the Last of Us 2 &5. In each of these instances the writers failed to give the player more of what they liked in the original by forcing them to play as a character they don’t care about. The only instance of this working I can think of is Red Dead Redemption 2 with the introduction of Arthur Morgan but that was helped by the fact you had a level of autonomy over the moral choices Arthur makes along with the fact that the sequel adds to the story of the original, not retracting from it. In summary, everything but the story is good. It might be worth playing eventually once it drops in price but the game length is short to begin with along with the fact the story is underwhelming and destroys a lot of your motivation to progress through the game. The game spends its entirety destroying the characters you knew from the first game. The only thing about Joel that even slightly resembles the character we love is his character model.

The AI feels like it belongs in a game from 2014, and the secondary main character moves like a GTA IV character.
The gameplay feels like its half a decade old, disappointingly the moments you find yourself actually feeling challenged and enjoying an encounter usually turn out to be entirely scripted, meaning you spend 20 minutes fighting a "mini boss" just to realize the only reason the encounter was difficult at all is because you are meant to lose regardless of how you perform. doesn't exactly feel rewarding to find out you would've gotten the same ending to a fight if you didnt touch your controller and let the monster beat you in 3 seconds.

All in all this game is a massive disappointment to anyone expecting a true attempt to continue the beloved story, this game shouldn't even be considered TLOU2, its essentially a new IP that reuses assets, names and voice actors.

Naughty Dog intentionally mislead the public in its advertising. Everything you loved from the TLOS part I? Murdered, hobbled, and discarded just like the Content creators of PlayStation for going over game leaks. There are no moral choices for the player and you are subjugated to the 'plot' which is so poorly written. Put simply, if this game is a car and it has the option of either running over an elderly couple, a puppy, or crashing into a tree, naughty dog subjugates you to crash into the tree, stab the puppy, and r*pe the elderly couple. An opening note about "review bombing": take a look at the positive reviews. See how many of the reviews don't go beyond a paragraph, or even a sentence? And in addition, that ten is the only review on that account? This is my first review, but I've tried to be as fair as possible, since I feel something needs to be said about how rhis all was handled. A large portion of the negative or mixed reviews are well-written criticisms of the game by fans of the series, while many of the 10s don't even mention a thing about the game itself. Don't review the game until you've finished it? I highly doubt all the positive reviewers have played the game through, either. Is "review bombing" justified when it's positive? Even if it's being done to counteract the backlash, it's still highly disingenuous and doesn't help the cause in the long run. With gaming journalists constantly being strong-armed into giving AAA titles high scores, honesty is becoming a precious commodity. The score disparity means something is wrong. The game has its good points, but it is definitely not flawless. Neither side is innocent. Look for yourself and think critically before blindly pushing your own narrative.

    With that said, the review.

The game looks, feels, and sounds amazing. There's no denying that. The graphics are breathtaking, and I'd say that aesthetically speaking, the game is unlike anything else on the console, pushing the PS4 to its absolute limits. A fitting sendoff, in light of the PS5's approaching release. The sound design is haunting, the musical score, environment, and enemies all sound incredible. This all ties together to paint possibly the most realistic and immersive picture of post-apocalyptic America I’ve ever seen. Play it on the biggest screen you have, wear headphones, and enjoy.

In terms of gameplay, it's good. It builds upon the established formula, refining it into a smooth and enjoyable stealth-action gameplay loop, tried and true. However, I wouldn't say it's game-changing, especially in comparison to its predecessor. TLOU brought us an entirely new experience, heart-pounding and suspenseful in a way that transformed the zombie genre. TLOU2 is equally exhilarating, but I wouldn't say it breaks any significant ground that its predecessor hadn't already. As a standalone game, it's excellent. As a sequel to the first game, which made me fall in love with the genre, it's just a tad disappointing.

Now, the story and characters. What the vast majority of reviews, me included, find issue with. I won’t get into detail about major plot points in order to keep this review friendly to those who haven’t played the game yet.

The way the story unfolds is confusing, forgettable, and downright infuriating at points. I think the idea was great; however, the order that it’s presented to you only made me less invested as the game went on. It retcons beloved characters, doing complete 180s on their personalities in ways that go beyond subversion into alien-skinsuit territory. The new characters that the game attempted to make me emphasize with were unlikable for multiple reasons, even to the point where I would take more risks in combat, not valuing their lives as highly. felt detached from the characters and uninvested in the story; so, why play the game?

All in all, TLOU2 would have been a great game, were it not a sequel. However, it is a sequel. It can’t be judged purely on its own merit. The graphics are incredible, the gameplay is great, but the story falls short. And that’s the issue. TLOU established itself as a narratively-driven game, a story about forging bonds and finding the good in a brutally unforgiving world. TLOU2 is a revenge story that beats you while you’re down and leaves you empty by its conclusion. Perhaps that was the point. Subversion isn’t a bad thing in itself. It can be a powerful tool, where betraying established expectations can create an experience more powerful than before. However, there’s a difference between subversion and indiscriminately breaking down aspects of a beloved series for the shock factor. The marketing seemed to double down on this idea, the trailers promising an entirely different game than what you ultimately buy. It’s shocking, but not in a good way.

The Last of Us should have been the last entry in the series. Go play that, wait for this to go on sale or pre-owned, and save yourself some cash.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After running through the game. Here is my honest review of it. Positives The game is gorgeous to look at, the graphics are seamless and impressive. The lighting and effect is something I’ve rarely seen in PS4 games. The soundtrack is amazing, how fluid it is from a shifting to a tense situation from a calm situation is perfect. The voice acting in this game is just as incredible as the first. The actors are spot on with their deliveries and emotions as they are conveyed. Difficulty - I played on normal and even then it posed a challenge. This game was not easy to breeze through but pose a definite a challenge as I ran through it. Gameplay - crafting, gunplay mechanics, stealth and fighting felt fluid and saw very little “stickiness”animator movement was really well done and small details are very noticeable especially in stealth mechanics in terms of how they move. Enemy - some of the enemies are nightmare fuel and it worth learning their backstories in how they are created. BAD The story in this game is horrendously put together, the plot holes, the character development and how the game forces you to accept certain development and how they present these developments are horrible and not well put together. The story though it set a sequence of events early on in the game for character development, it failed badly and in fact turn the game into a chore and it became emotionally draining to complete it. The choices certain characters make or what made them likable and relatable are entirely 180 from the first game. This was story was not put together well and it was disappointing to witness. AI - the AI in this game fell short of intelligent. I running past clickers was very easy to do (possibly due to my difficulty setting). Human enemies are the worst and very predictable which made them a boring encounter. I wanted more monster type enemies but their were more human battles than monster battles when compared to the first. This game definitely is not a successor to the first. I am sadden by the direction they chose for the story. I weigh single player games heavy on the story and because of how lacking the story was the score I gave is completely fair. Expand

Visually the game is stunning, it's one of (if not) the best games on any console.

The gameplay is average, while stealth is a fantastic mechanic it was destroyed the abundance of quicktime events and lack of puzzles. The linear gameplay and lack of choice in this game is frustrating.

Most importantly the story was terrible, killing off a beloved character early based on choices they never would have made in the first game doesn't make any sense. You're then expected to play as a character that you have just witnessed kill a beloved character with no backstory at all. Without going into all the issues with the back and forth revenge plot at the end we end up with no pay off. No choice but to watch our supposed "protagonist" make stupid decisions and ultimately lose everything while the "antagonist" gets everything they ever wanted with nothing lost. The worst part for me is the betrayal Ellie has for Joel, a man who did everything to save his little girl only to be beaten down by said little girl at every possibility even in the final moments of the game....

So I feel this game is a 5/10, to some it might seem low and to other's it might feel high but I'll explain below.

So I feel this game is a 5/10, to some it might seem low and to other's it might feel high but I'll explain below.

To start I did not enjoy TLOU2 personally. I didn't think it was a good game in terms of story or gameplay especially and the new characters varied from unremarkable to average.

    Pros:

    - Art style: TLOU always had a beautiful art style and this sequel is no different, in terms of environmental design it is stunning at times especially seeing Seattle overgrown with foliage. You truly get the image of a civilization in ruins while traversing it.

    - Sound Design: TLOU was heralded for its beautiful soundtrack and ambient sounds and this sequel measures up to that. And while I may have personally preferred the original's soundtrack, that isn't a knock on the sequels. There were some truly inspired choices used and it is definitely one of the games highlights.

    - Character Design: With the exception of a few characters, the overall character design ranges from average to great for the setting it is in. It's nothing monumental, no truly awe inspiring designs but the ones that you do see are more often then not good.

    - Performance: Voice acting in this game is phenomenal with probably a single character whom I didn't feel the voice fit the character. Troy Baker as Joel is an absolute highlight again managing to capture the pained and conflicted anti hero and Ashley Johnson is masterful as Ellie making you truly feel what she is going through.

    Cons:

    - Story: I understand what they were hoping to accomplish with the story but for me and seemingly many others it fell flat. The story came across akin to a fanfiction written by someone who truly hated the first game, and that becomes obvious within the first 3 hours of the campaign where a formerly leading protagonist is absolutely disrespected with their legacy ultimately leading to nothing and their death being purely for shock value. And the character responsible for his death never reaches the sympathetic protagonist archetype that they were going for. Instead it does a disservice to the characters affected by it and the game suffers as a whole.

    - Gameplay: TLOU was never heralded for it's impressive gameplay but I had hoped that with 7 years under their belt, Naughty Dog would have managed to improve vastly upon what came before. Instead it appears that what we received was not even a refinement, but simply a few additions in the form of dodge and momentary incapacitation. This leads to stagnant and monotonous gameplay repetition that becomes tedious a few yours in. If you played TLOU1, you'll be familiar with the playstyles.

Enemy AI: There is no easy way to put this, enemy AI in this game is bad, very very bad. TLOU1 had laughably bad AI at the time of it's release but even 7 years later with massive system upgrades the enemy AI is only fractionally better then what came before. For context I recently played through Watch Dogs, a game that was released in 2014. To me that game had vastly superior enemy AI as they had heightened detection and posted more of a challenge.

Enemy variation: This is another area that suffered in TLOU2, the enemy variety is lacking, very lacking. And that along with the gameplay hurts the overall experience.

Level Design: TLOU2 suffers from having to me at least very straightforward encounters. You are more often then not thrown into an area with only 1-2 ways to handle said scenario often resulting in the same outcome. The lack of variety to the levels as well as the above reasons makes gameplay tedious at times.

Overall like I said, I did not enjoy The Last of Us 2 myself, I understand why some loved it and I understand why some hate it. But despite the pro's I listed, I can't get myself to give it any higher than a 5. I loved The Last of Us, but the sequel seemed to make it a mission to undo what the first game had built up resulting in characters I didn't care for, a pointless death which amounted to nothing in the end and sadly far too many missteps for me to rank it any higher.

I have no doubt that the developers poured plenty of work into this game, but sadly I can not rate it any higher than I have. I hope they take the criticism to heart and work to improve going forward. Sadly I think it is time to let The Last of Us franchise end. This was an anticipated but unnecessary sequel that ultimately did more harm then good.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
